Das alte Rom kämpfte ebenso mit Müllproblemen wie die Metropolen des 19. Jahrhunderts. Doch alles verblasst hinter den Abfallbergen der Gegenwart. Anhand der Produktion von und dem Umgang mit Müll schreibt Roman Köster eine erhellende Geschichte unserer Spezies und zeigt, wie sich das Leben mit dem Abfall von der Sesshaftwerdung bis heute verändert. Sein Buch bietet die erste durchgehend schmutzige Geschichte der Menschheit, denn weggeworfen wird immer. In der Vormoderne waren Abfälle vor allem ein praktisches Problem. Sie lagen herum, rochen schlecht und behinderten den Verkehr. Im Zuge des starken und weltweiten Städtewachstums seit dem späten 18. Jahrhundert stieg die Aufmerksamkeit für durch Abfälle erzeugte hygienische Probleme, die die Ausbreitung von Typhus oder Cholera begünstigten. Heute hingegen ist der Müll von einer Frage städtischer Sauberkeit zu einem globalen Umweltproblem geworden. In seiner Globalgeschichte des Mülls von der Frühgeschichte bis heute geht Roman Köster den Ursachen dieser Entwicklungen nach und zeigt, wie sich das Wegwerfen, Entsorgen und Wiederverwerten im Lauf der Geschichte verändert hat. Denn der Müll und der Versuch, ihn zu beseitigen, prägten das Gesicht der Siedlungen und Städte sowie das Leben ihrer Bewohner - von der Steinzeit bis heute. „Müll wird normalerweise als Problem des Konsums betrachtet und viele öffentliche Diskurse drehen sich um Mülltrennung als nachgelagertes Problem. Die große Leistung des Autors Roman Köster besteht darin, die Produktion von Müll als intrinsisches Problem unserer Wirtschaftsweise – „unseres täglichen Lebensvollzugs” – zu beschreiben. Er analysiert die Geschichte der Entstehung von Müll und die Verbindung mit der kapitalistischen Wirtschaftsweise auf sehr verständliche Art, unterstützt durch anschauliche Beispiele. Mit dieser Frage beginnt Amitav Ghosh seine Recherche auf den Spuren der Muskatnuss. Heute alltägliches Gewürz, galt sie im 17. Jahrhundert als Luxusgut - allein eine Handvoll davon reichte aus, um einen Palast zu erbauen -, denn die seltene Frucht wuchs nur auf jener Insel, die niederländische Truppen vornehmlich deshalb in Besitz nahmen, um das Handelsmonopol für die Niederländische Ostindien-Kompanie zu sichern. Während Amitav Ghosh die Reise der Muskatnuss nachzeichnet, veranschaulicht er eindrucksvoll die Mechanismen von Kolonialismus und Ausbeutung der Einheimischen sowie der Natur durch westliche Länder. Es zeigt, wie die Produktion der Bohnen zum Klimawandel beigetragen hat und warum sie nun von ihm bedroht wird. Es erzählt die Geschichte der Ausbreitung des Kaffees von seinen Anfängen als wilder Waldkaffee in Äthiopien, seinem Weg über die arabische Welt nach Asien und übers Meer nach Lateinamerika, der heute bei weitem wichtigsten Anbauregion. Diese Geschichte war immer auch eine Geschichte des Kahlschlags von Regenwäldern, der Zwangsarbeit und der Sklaverei, des ungezügelten Kapitalismus und der Gewalt bis hin zum Völkermord. Auf vielen Plantagen gilt noch heute, was man in Lateinamerika sagt: Kaffee wird auf Armut angebaut. Das muss nicht so sein. Das Buch zeigt auch, dass es möglich ist, umwelt- und sozialverträglichen Kaffee zu produzieren. Der ist in aller Regel viel besser als die unter menschenverachtenden Bedingungen produzierte Massenware

    Abstract: Started in the wake of George Zimmerman's 2013 acquittal in the death of Trayvon Martin, the #BlackLivesMatter movement has become a powerful and incendiary campaign demanding redress for the brutal and unjustified treatment of black bodies by law enforcement in the United States. The movement is only a few years old, but as Christopher J. Lebron argues in this book, the sentiment behind it is not; the plea and demand that 〈"Black Lives Matter〉" comes out of a much older and richer tradition arguing for the equal dignity-and not just equal rights-of black people. The Making of Black Lives Matter presents a condensed and accessible intellectual history that traces the genesis of the ideas that have built into the #BlackLivesMatter movement. Drawing on the work of revolutionary black public intellectuals, including Frederick Douglass, Ida B. Wells, Langston Hughes, Zora Neal Hurston, Anna Julia Cooper, Audre Lorde, James Baldwin, and Martin Luther King Jr., Lebron clarifies what it means to assert that 〈"Black Lives Matter〉" when faced with contemporary instances of anti-black law enforcement. He also illuminates the crucial difference between the problem signaled by the social media hashtag and how we think that we ought to address the problem. As Lebron states, police body cameras, or even the exhortation for civil rights mean nothing in the absence of equality and dignity. To upset dominant practices of abuse, oppression and disregard, we must reach instead for radical sensibility. Radical sensibility requires that we become cognizant of the history of black thought and activism in order to make sense of the emotions, demands, and argument of present-day activists and public thinkers.     Abstract: "Ableism remains the most socially acceptable form of intolerance, with pejoratives referencing disability - and intellectual disability in particular - remaining largely unquestioned among many. Yet the understanding, depiction, and representation of disability is also clearly in a process of transformation. This volume analyzes that transformation, taking a close look at attitudes toward disability, understood as a "deviation" from what a non-disabled body should ostensibly be able to do and how it should look, in historical and contemporary German-speaking contexts. The volume begins with an overview of the emergence and growth of disability studies in German-speaking Europe against the background of the field's emergence a decade or so earlier in the US and UK. The differences in timing, methodology, and research concentrations bring into focus how each cultural context has shaped the field. Building on recent scholarship that uses a cultural studies approach, the volume's three sections analyze disability and ability constructs in history, memory, and culture.     Abstract: "As a minority, Jews in Britain are confident, their institutions competent and mature. And yet within Jewish life in Britain there is a pervading sense of anxiety. Jews in Britain have risen to the top of nearly every profession, they run major companies, sit at the top tables in politics, make their voices heard in the media, are prominent in science and the arts. Of course there is serious poverty and gross disadvantage, just as there is in any community. But on any objective measure, British Jews have done well. Particularly when we consider where they came from, the impoverished, often oppressed lives that many Jews lived in Eastern Europe and the Ottoman Empire less than 200 years ago. Jews have lived in Britain longer than any other minority. They've been here so long, and are so ingrained into the national fabric, that they are often not considered to be a minority at all. Until a periodic outburst of antisemitism or a flare up in the Middle East, or both, turns the spotlight on them once again. British Jews have another distinction too. They have lived safely and securely, continuously, in Britain longer than any other modern Jewish community has lived anywhere else in the world. They have organised themselves in a way that serves as a model both to more recent immigrant communities in Britain and to Jewish communities elsewhere. Being British, they wear their distinctions lightly, they don't trumpet their achievements, in fact they rarely make a noise at all. But they give back quietly: established Jewish organisations help more recently arrived minorities to create their own structures, charities draw on the Jewish experience of dislocation and persecution to help oppressed people in the developing world, philanthropists support causes far beyond the boundaries of their own communities.     Abstract: "When SNCC leader Stokely Carmichael first called for "Black Power" on a Civil Rights march in 1966 he not only gave name to a movement that shaped one of the most significant periods of the African American freedom struggle in the USA. His background as son of migrants from Trinidad and Tobago also gives an indication on the international dimension of the Black Power movement. Black Power was informed by the ideas of Afro-diasporic intellectuals and Pan-Africanists such as W.E.B. DuBois, Marcus Garvey, Frantz Fanon, and Malcolm X. Deeply rooted in practices of Black transnationalism, Black Power heralded a new era of African American defiance, militancy, and cultural awareness, which transcended the U.S. and left its footprints throughout the Hemisphere, providing marginalized communities beyond national and cultural boundaries with meaningful symbols of resistance and self-affirmation in the face of racial oppression. Black Power's hemispheric impact encouraged the emergence of musical genres, antiracist movements, and border-crossing networks of solidarity among Afro-descendants in the Caribbean, Latin and North America, and continues to be a source of inspiration for the political and cultural expressions of the Black Americas in the 21st century as manifested by the Black Lives Matter movement. This compilation of essays by scholars and activists intends to fill an important gap by addressing Black Power within a historical, polyvocal and multi-locational approach shedding light on manifestations of Black Power from Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Cuba, Jamaica, Panama, Puerto Rico, Uruguay, the United States and their entanglements"--

    Abstract: "While the Third Communist International (Comintern) supported nationalist revolution in China, Soviet writers and film-makers traveled to China, met with Chinese students in Moscow, and sought to reimagine China for a Soviet audience as the next site of world revolution. Their artistic experiments constituted a search for an "internationalist aesthetics": a mode of representation that could overcome the exoticism of imperialist culture and produce transnational sympathies between populations previously considered culturally distant. Contributing to a recent cultural turn in the study of socialist internationalism, Internationalist Aesthetics positions China in the 1920s as the central space for Soviet culture's attempt to imagine how internationalism was supposed to look and feel. Tyerman traces the reimagining of China through the multiple genres and media of the early Soviet cultural system, including reportage, film, theater, and biography. This account offers new insight into the transnational dynamics that shaped Soviet culture and socialist aesthetics, and illuminates a crucial chapter in Sino-Russian relations, one of the most significant international relationships of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries"--

    Abstract: Queer spaces are crucial for the construction of LGBTQ+ communities, as they constitute places where queer subjects can create political, social, and affective alliances. Júlia Braga Neves shows how these spaces are pivotal for the representation of queer history in the fictional works by the British authors Sarah Waters and Alan Hollinghurst, whose characters and plots are articulated through and within London's sexual geographies. Considering the intersection between gender, sexuality, and class, this study engages with spatial, queer, feminist, and Marxist theories as a means to reflect on London, queer historiography, and the relationship between subject and urban space.

    Abstract: African American Political Thought offers an unprecedented philosophical history of thinkers from the African American community and African diaspora who have addressed the central issues of political life: democracy, race, violence, liberation, solidarity, and mass political action. Melvin L. Rogers and Jack Turner have brought together leading scholars to reflect on individual intellectuals from the past four centuries, developing their list with an expansive approach to political expression. The collected essays consider such figures as Martin Delany, Ida B. Wells, W. E. B. Du Bois, James Baldwin, Toni Morrison, and Audre Lorde, whose works are addressed by scholars such as Farah Jasmin Griffin, Robert Gooding-Williams, Michael Dawson, Nick Bromell, Neil Roberts, and Lawrie Balfour.
