    Abstract: Nach dem Konfessionswechsel des Herrscherhauses und in Folge der Arbeitsmigration im 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert entwickelte sich in Sachsen eine zahlenmäßig kleine, aber zunehmend stabile katholische Minderheit. Daneben gab es in der Oberlausitz die katholischen Sorben mit ihrer jahrhundertealten Verflechtung von religiöser und kultureller Identität. In rechtlicher Hinsicht bestand die Situation der Katholiken jedoch aus einem Konglomerat von langlebigen Provisorien unterschiedlicher Herkunft. Deshalb war die Wiedererrichtung des Bistums Meißen 1921, zunächst mit Bischofssitz in Bautzen, ein entscheidender Schritt auf dem Weg zur endgültigen Gleichberechtigung der beiden großen Konfessionen. In den folgenden Jahrzehnten fand dann die katholische Kirche in Sachsen unabhängig von staatlichen Strukturen ihre spezifische, oft eher unauffällige, aber doch hör- und sichtbare Rolle innerhalb der Gesellschaft - in traditionell protestantischer Umgebung, unter zwei Diktaturen und nach 1990 im wiedervereinigten Deutschland. Die 100-Jahr-Feier der Wiedererrichtung des Bistums bot einen willkommenen Anlass, um in einem Kolloquium die Vielgestaltigkeit katholisch-kirchlichen Lebens in Sachsen erneut in den Blick zu nehmen. Der vorliegende Band vereinigt nicht nur Beiträge aus unterschiedlichen Fachdisziplinen zu bisher wenig beachteten Themen, sondern auch Erfahrungsberichte aus kirchlicher Leitungstätigkeit. Sowohl im Hinblick auf die behandelten Gegenstände als auch in methodischer Hinsicht entsteht eine Zwischenbilanz, aus der Impulse für weitere Forschungen erwachsen können

There is an "unacknowledged kinship" between studies of Zionism and post-colonial studies, a kinship that deserves to be both discovered and acknowledged. Unacknowledged Kinships strives to facilitate a conversation between the historiography of Zionism and postcolonial studies by identifying and exploring possible linkages and affiliations between their subjects as well as the limits of such connections. The contributors to this volume discuss central theoretical concepts developed within the field of postcolonial studies, and they use these concepts to analyze crucial aspects of the history of Zionism while contextualizing Zionist thought, politics, and culture within colonial and postcolonial histories. This book also argues that postcolonial studies could gain from looking at the history of Zionism as an example of not only colonial domination but also the seemingly contradictory processes of national liberation and self-empowerment. Unacknowledged Kinships is the first work to systematically investigate the potential for a dialogue between postcolonial studies and Zionist historiography.     Abstract: In dramatic contrast to the reported growing influence of doctrinal and fundamentalist forms of religion in some parts of Southeast Asia, the predominantly Buddhist societies of the region are witnessing an upsurge of spirit possession cults and diverse forms of magical ritual. This is found in many social strata, including the urban poor, rising middle classes and elite groups, and across the different political systems of Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. This volume reveals both the central historical place of spirit possession rituals in the Buddhist cultures of mainland Southeast Asia and their important contemporary roles to enhance prosperity and protection. This book examines the increasing prominence of spirit mediumship and divination across the region by exploring the interplay of neoliberal capitalism, visual media, the network cultures of the Internet, and the politics of cultural heritage and identity. It advances beyond critiques of the "secularization" and "disenchantment" theses to explore the processes of modernity that are actively producing magical worldviews and stimulating the rise of spirit cults. As such, it not only challenges the assumptions of modernization theory but demonstrates that the cults in question are novel ritual forms that emerge out of inherently modern conditions.

    Abstract: Afropolitan Encounters: Literature and Activism in London and Berlin explores what Afropolitanism does. Mobile people of African descent use this term to address their own lived realities creatively, which often includes countering stereotypical notions of being African. Afropolitan practices are enormously heterogeneous and malleable, which constitutes its strengths and, at the same time, creates tensions. This book traces the theoretical beginnings of Afropolitanism and moves on to explore Afropolitan practices in London and Berlin. Afropolitanism can take different forms, such as that of an identity, a political and ethical stance, a dead–end road, networks, a collective self–care practice or a strategic label. In spite of the harsh criticism, Afropolitanism is attractive for people to deal with the meanings of Africa and Africanness, questions of belonging, equal rights and opportunities. While not a unitary project, the vast variety of Afropolitan practices provide approaches to contemporary political problems in Europe and beyond. In this book, Afropolitan practices are read against the specific context of German and British colonial histories and structures of racism, the histories of Black Europeans, and contemporary right–wing resurgence in Germany and England, respectively.

    Abstract: "This book offers fresh theoretical, methodological and empirical analyses of the relation between religion and the city in the South Asian context. Uniting the historical with the contemporary by looking at the medieval and early modern links between religious faith and urban settlement, the book brings together a series of focused studies of the mixed and multiple practices and spatial negotiations of religion in the South Asian city. It looks at the various ways in which contemporary religious practice affects urban everyday life, commerce, craft, infrastructure, cultural forms, art, music and architecture. Chapters draw upon original empirical study and research to analyse the foundational, structural, material and cultural connections between religious practice and urban formations or flows. The book argues that Indian cities are not 'postsecular' in the sense that the term is currently used in the modern West, but that there has been, rather, a deep, even foundational link between religion and urbanism, producing different versions of urban modernity.     Abstract: In a time of rapid societal changes around the globe, there is a pressing need for genuine elucidation of Muslim moral values and norms, especially in migration contexts. These rapid changes raise questions about the conservation of the 'self' and the adaptation of norms and values to real-life conditions or contexts. Muslims, confronted by the conflicting demands of tradition and modernity, often search for answers in theological normativity, particularly in conceptualisations of ethical norms and values. In this context, the legal verses in the Qurʾān, called normative verses (āyāt al-aḥkām), constitute key points of reference. Because the plurality of Islamic conceptualisations of norms requires a multidisciplinary approach, this collection of articles examines the topic from the perspective of three different disciplines of Islamic theology: Qurʾānic hermeneutics, principles of Islamic jurisprudence and religious education.     Abstract: In einer Zeit rascher gesellschaftlicher und globaler Veränderungen besteht insbesondere in Migrationskontexten der Bedarf nach einer gründlichen Auseinandersetzung mit tradierten muslimischen ethischen bzw. moralischen Werten und Normenvorstellungen. Der rasche und komplexe Wertewandel wirft die Frage nach dem Verhältnis zwischen Bewahrung des Eigenen und Anpassung bzw. Weiterentwicklung der Normen und Werte an die lebensrealen Bedingungen und Kontexte auf. Im Prozess dieser Auseinandersetzung zwischen Tradition und Moderne rückt die Frage nach theologischer Normensetzung bzw. Wertevorstellungen in den Fokus des Interesses muslimischen Lebensvollzugs. Dabei kommt dem Umgang mit der Normativität des Korans bzw. der sogenannten Normenverse (āyāt al-aḥkām) eine Schlüsselrolle zu. Da die Multidimensionalität islamischer Normenvorstellungen interdisziplinäre Zugänge erfordert, wird die Thematik aus drei islamtheologischen Fachperspektiven (Koranhermeneutik, Normenlehre, Religionspädagogik) beleuchtet. It investigates the role of materiality in contemporary returns to the past as a means of assessing the function of things in remembering, revisioning, and/or reimagining the nineteenth century. Examining iterations of material culture in literature, film and popular television series, this volume offers a reconsideration of nineteenth-century things and the neo-Victorian cultural forms that they have inspired, animated, and even haunted. By turning to new and relatively underexplored strands of neo-Victorian materiality—including opium paraphernalia, slave ships, clothing, and biographical objects—and interrogating the critical role such objects play in reconstructing the past, this volume offers ways of thinking about how mis/apprehensions of material culture in the nineteenth century continue to shape our present understanding of things.

    Abstract: Unmittelbar nach dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs errichtete die Sowjet­union monumentale Siegesdenkmäler in den Zentren Wiens (Schwarzenbergplatz) und Berlins (Tiergarten). 1949 folgte als dritte Anlage das Ehrenmal in Berlin-Treptow, das größte Monument seiner Art außerhalb der Sowjetunion. Neben ihrer Funktion als Ruhestätte für die Gefallenen der Roten Armee sollten diese Anlagen in beiden Hauptstädten als dauerhafte Symbole sowjetischer Präsenz dienen. Erstmals werden die drei Denkmalsanlagen auf einer breiten Quellenbasis vergleichend untersucht sowie kunsthistorisch und erinnerungskulturell eingeordnet. Die Studie zeichnet ihre Entstehungsgeschichte nach und leuchtet in einer langen zeitlichen Perspektive ihre Nutzung und geschichtspolitische Bedeutung in den unterschiedlichen politischen Systemen vielfältig aus.

    Abstract: This book provides a critical overview of contemporary world issues in Language and Literary Studies. It offers specific ideas as to how to move away from the traditional literary canon, on the one hand, and traditional native-speaker norms in English language teaching, on the other. It delivers a global perspective of both the growth and the challenges in ELT studies around the world. Following the introduction, the first section of the book contains chapters from international scholars on recognizing and diversifying Englishes in today’s language and translation classrooms. Specifically, the chapters focus on issues such as the cultural hegemony of a monolithic English, English and university pedagogy, English as a gatekeeper, and the role of a reconceived English education in promoting cross-cultural understanding.     Abstract: The phenomenon of South Korean Christianity is, in a word, remarkable. In less than 250 years, 29% of South Korea's population adheres to Christianity, a staggering 71% of Korean Americans identify as Christian, and the powerful zeal of Korean Christians to spread the Gospel's influence in South Korea already overshadows other established religious groups (i.e. Buddhism, Confucianism). This handbook offers a comprehensive overview on how the Bible has been used by faith communities in Korea and the Korean diaspora over two centuries.
    Abstract: "Korean Christianity is renowned for its rapid growth and conservative theological orientation. This phenomenon is inextricably tied to Korean appropriation of the Bible in their religio-cultural and socio-political context since the 18th century. Less understood, however, is the complex tapestry of Korean biblical interpretation that emerged from being missionized, colonized, internally divided, and incorporated into global norms. These countervailing forces proffer a distinctive Korean-ness of biblical interpretation. On the one hand, it tracks closely the influence of conservative western missionaries. On the other hand, it reflects God's liberating intervention for Koreans and the Korean diaspora. Both of these movements respond to and move beyond distinct histories of oppression. This introduction coheres twenty-four papers by grouping them into four waves of reciprocal interpretive encounters shaping Korean appropriation of the Bible and Christian practices. While some conservatively align with received western orthodoxy, others embrace a sense of complementarity that informs the spectrum of Korean Christian thought and practice, the long-standing religious traditions of Korea, the diversity of Korea's global diaspora, and the learning of non-Koreans who are attentive to the impact of the Bible in Korea"--

    Abstract: Klappentext: Zur Schriftkultur des Mittelalters und der Frühen Neuzeit gehören nicht nur Handschriften und Drucke, sondern auch Inschriften, die auf unterschiedlichen Materialien und Gegenständen, auf Plätzen und Gebäuden angebracht wurden. Auf den ersten Blick scheint ihr Zweck offenkundig: Sie zeigen Besitz an oder erinnern an vergangene Personen und Ereignisse. Rekonstruiert man aber die Kontexte und Praktiken sowie die Bedeutung von Beschreibstoffen, Layout und Formaten, eröffnen Inschriften eine Vieldeutigkeit, die keine einfachen Antworten mehr zulässt. Gesteigert wird dies noch, wenn man real erhaltene mit solchen Inschriften konfrontiert, die in Chroniken, Romanen, Legenden oder mystischen Visionen dieser Zeit beschrieben werden. Die Autorinnen und Autoren des vorliegenden Buches fragen danach, welche Bedeutungen den Inschriften in Mittelalter und Früher Neuzeit beigemessen wurden - etwa im städtischen Raum, an Gräbern, in intermedialen Konstellationen - und welche Funktionen sie darüber hinaus im historiografischen, geistlichen oder genealogischen Erzählen ausbilden konnten. Dies ist ein Open-Access-Buch.

    Abstract: This book is available as open access through the Bloomsbury Open Access programme and is available on www.bloomsburycollections.com. It is funded by the University of Klagenfurt, Austria. Discussing key issues of current relevance and setting the tone for future research in world Englishes, this book provides new perspectives on the diverse realities of Englishes around the world. Written by an international team of established and renowned scholars, it is the inaugural volume in the new series Bloomsbury Advances in World Englishes, dedicated to advancing research in the field. Chapters discuss important topics in contemporary world Englishes research, including de-colonial approaches, emerging varieties in post-protectorates and international uses as communicative events to highlight the globalizing aspect of English as a semiotic code. The book also expands on cultural conceptualizations to investigate the connections between Englishes and localized cultural knowledge and ongoing changes and attitudes towards local forms in multilingual settings.     Abstract: Moses Wilhelm Shapira's infamous Deuteronomy fragments - long believed to be forgeries - are authentic ancient manuscripts, and they are of far greater significance than ever imagined. The literary work that these manuscripts preserve - which Idan Dershowitz calls "The Valediction of Moses" or "V" - is not based on the book of Deuteronomy. On the contrary, V is a much earlier version of Deuteronomy. In other words, V is a proto-biblical book, the likes of which has never before been seen. This conclusion is supported by a series of philological analyses, as well as previously unknown archival documents, which undermine the consensus on these manuscripts. An excursus co-authored with Na'ama Pat-El assesses V's linguistic profile, finding it to be consistent with Iron Age epigraphic Hebrew. V contains early versions of passages whose biblical counterparts reflect substantial post-Priestly updating. Moreover, unlike the canonical narratives of Deuteronomy, this ancient work shows no signs of influence from the Deuteronomic law code. Indeed, V preserves an earlier, and dramatically different, literary structure for the entire work - one that lacks the Deuteronomic law code altogether. These findings have significant consequences for the composition history of the Bible, historical linguistics, the history of religion, paleography, archaeology, and more. However, if one looks at other texts of the Hebrew Bible, there is no mention of the Joseph story; instead, the arrival of the Israelites is said to be the result of the decision of a "father" or of "fathers" to go down do Egypt. Indeed, there are very few references to Joseph at all in the whole Hebrew Bible. Apparently, the Joseph story is not necessary for explaining why the Israelites found themselves in Egypt. The question therefore arises: Why was this story written, when, and for what audience? This volume offers an overview of the current discussion on the origins, composition, and historical contexts behind the Joseph narrative. There is a tendency to date the story (or its original version) to the Persian period, but this volume includes divergent voices about this issue. The volume also shows that scholarly discussion about the historical location of the Joseph story requires to bring together Egyptologists and biblical scholars
