    Abstract: In People's Diplomacy, Kazushi Minami shows how the American and Chinese people rebuilt US-China relations in the 1970s, a pivotal decade bookended by Richard Nixon's 1972 visit to China and 1979 normalization of diplomatic relations. Top policymakers in Washington and Beijing drew the blueprint for the new bilateral relationship, but the work of building it was left to a host of Americans and Chinese from all walks of life, who engaged in "people-to-people" exchanges. After two decades of estrangement and hostility caused by the Cold War, these people dramatically changed the nature of US-China relations. Americans reimagined China as a country of opportunities, irresistible because of its prodigious potential, while Chinese reinterpreted the United States as an agent of modernization, capable of enriching their country and rejuvenating their lives. Drawing on extensive research at two dozen archives in the United States and China, People's Diplomacy redefines contemporary US-China relations as a creation of the American and Chinese people

    Abstract: Patriarchale Gewalt ist eines der zentralen Themen feministischer Gegenöffentlichkeit in der Türkei: sowohl im historischen Rückblick als auch im Hinblick auf aktuelle feministische Politik. Durch den Austritt der Türkei aus der Istanbul-Konvention, den Präsident Recep Tayyip Erdoğan im März 2021 verkündete, sind die Proteste gegen patriarchale Gewalt erneut in den Fokus feministischer Politik gerückt. Feministinnen kritisieren seit der Entstehung der Neuen Frauenbewegung in den 1980er Jahren die hinter der Gewalt gegen Frauen stehende patriarchale Strukturierung von Machtverhältnissen in der Gesellschaft und der Familie sowie die mangelnde Implementierung der Gesetze zur Prävention der Gewalt. Um ihren Sichtweisen Ausdruck zu verleihen sowie feministische Netzwerke zu schaffen, gaben Feministinnen selbstorganisierte Zeitschriften heraus. Diese Studie untersucht die Diskussionen zu patriarchaler Gewalt in den Zeitschriften Feminist (1987-1990), Pazartesi (1995-2005), Roza (1996-2000) und feminist politika (2009-2015). Die Studie fragt danach, was die zentralen Themen feministischer medialer Gegenöffentlichkeit zur patriarchalen Gewalt sind, vor welchen zeithistorischen, gesellschaftlichen und politischen Kontexten die Zeitschriften das Problem diskutieren und wie die Proteste und Organisationsformen der feministischen Bewegung in Bezug auf den Kampf gegen die patriarchale Gewalt reflektiert werden. Die Arbeit richtet zudem einen Fokus darauf, inwieweit in den Zeitschriften Differenzen innerhalb feministischer Diskussionen zur Gewalt gegen Frauen deutlich werden. So rücken die kurdischen Feministinnen um die Zeitschrift Roza neben der patriarchalen Mentalität, die die Gewalt gegen Frauen bedingt, auch den strukturellen Rassismus gegen Kurd*innen in den Fokus, der die Gewalterfahrungen von kurdischen Frauen prägt.

    Abstract: A new view of 20th-century US social movements, 'Rough Draft of History' examines how national newspapers covered social movements and the organizations driving them. Edwin Amenta and Neal Caren identify hundreds of movement organizations, from the Women's Christian Temperance Union to Occupy Wall Street, and document their treatment in the news. In doing so, Amenta and Caren provide an alternative account of US history from below, as it was refracted through journalistic lenses. Iconic organizations in the women's rights, African American civil rights, and environmental movements gained substantial media attention. But so too did now-forgotten groups, such as the German-American Alliance, Committee to Defend America by Aiding the Allies, and Peace and Freedom Party. Amenta and Caren show why some organizations made big news while others did not.

    Abstract: Seit dem Ersten Weltkrieg galten Massenkommunikation und Propaganda als integrale Faktoren des politischen und militärischen Geschehens. Damit wuchs der Bedarf an systematischer Expertise und wissenschaftlicher Erforschung. Während des Zweiten Weltkrieges und im Kalten Krieg wurde die Planung, Beobachtung und Analyse von Propaganda zu einem wichtigen Feld strategischer Wissensproduktion. Im Wege einer dreiseitig verflochtenen Wahrnehmungs- und Beziehungsgeschichte untersucht Benno Nietzel, welche Rolle Kommunikationsexperten und Wissenschaftler in der Propaganda dreier Länder spielten: in den Vereinigten Staaten, in Deutschland und der Sowjetunion. Verschiedene Akteursgruppen konkurrierten jeweils um Gehör, Einfluss und Zuständigkeiten auf dem Gebiet der Propaganda. Aus ihren Erfolgen und ihrem Scheitern ergibt sich eine alternative Geschichte von Verwissenschaftlichungsprozessen und Expertentum im 20. Jahrhundert, die von Ungleichzeitigkeiten, Gegenläufigkeiten und Widersprüchen gekennzeichnet ist

    Abstract: Racism is once again an issue in Germany. Few studies have addressed the changing manifestations of racism in West Germany and in post-1990 Germany. The essays in this collection trace an arc of continuity from post-1945 völkisch ideology to the beginnings of right-wing terrorism, to the consequences of legislation concerning foreigners, and to issues of identity politics.
    Abstract: Rassismus ist ein vieldiskutiertes Gegenwartsthema – doch die spezifisch deutschen Aspekte und Brüche in der jüngeren Geschichte des Phänomens sind noch kaum erforscht. Nach einer ausführlichen Skizze und Analyse der westdeutschen Rassismushistorie durch den Herausgeber nimmt der Band in chronologischer Gliederung exemplarische Facetten in den Blick. Die Beiträge schlagen einen Bogen von den Kontinuitäten völkischen Denkens nach 1945 und den Anfängen des Rechtsterrorismus hin zu den Fragestellungen, die das frühe 21. Jahrhundert betreffen. Analysiert werden u. a. das sich verändernde linke wie rechte Rassismus-Verständnis nach 1968, die Aporien der frühen Rassismus-Forschung und des Multikulturalismus, sowie die Ära der "völkischen Ekstase" nach der Wiedervereinigung. Brennende Asylbewerberunterkünfte und die NSU-Mordserie zeigten, wie virulent der Rassismus in Deutschland noch ist, der in den identitätspolitischen Debatten jüngst unter neuen Vorzeichen thematisiert wird.

    Abstract: Spanning over two centuries from around 1800 to the present day, Black American Portraits chronicles the ways in which Black Americans have used portraiture to envision themselves in their own eyes. Remembering Two Centuries of Black American Art, curated by David C. Driskell at LACMA 45 years ago, this book is a companion to the exhibition of the same name that reframes portraiture to center Black American subjects, sitters and spaces. Doch wer dort Unterstützung sucht, muss deren Motive und Interessen verstehen. Im Globalen Süden ist Multipolarität, also eine Ordnung, in der keineswegs nur die USA und Europa, sondern auch China, Indien, Südafrika oder Brasilien und mancherorts sogar Russland eine wichtige Rolle spielen, ein positives Zukunftsszenario. Weil sie vielen Ländern Autonomie verspricht, indem sie Entscheidungsspielräume eröffnet, wo vorher keine waren. Im Globalen Süden wird die internationale Politik daher ganz anders gesehen als im Westen, wo man den Abschied von der alten Machtordnung als "unübersichtlich" und damit potenziell bedrohlich wahrnimmt. Dabei eröffnen sich Chancen, dort wo viele bislang vor allem Risiken sehen. Denn die fundamentalen Interessen Europas in Wirtschaft, Politik und Ökologie überschneiden sich mit denen vieler Staaten des Globalen Südens

Gleichzeitig entstand eine gesellschaftliche Gegenbewegung: Anti-Environmentalism. Proteste gegen Parks, Trinkwasserstandards und erneuerbare Energien sind heute ein fester Bestandteil der konservativen Agenda. Ella Müller zeichnet die historische Genese dieses Phänomens nach. Sie zeigt, wie aus dem Widerstand gegen einzelne Maßnahmen ein reaktionäres politisches Projekt werden konnte, dessen treibender Motor der Kampf gegen das liberale Amerika wurde. Die Studie analysiert ihren soziokulturellen und strukturellen Wandlungsprozess unter Genderaspekten in den ersten fünfzig Jahren ihres Bestehens – von intransparenten Wirkungszusammenhängen informeller Netzwerke hin zu einer modernen, an Gleichstellungspolitik orientierten Forschungsinstitution. Dabei werden zwei weibliche Arbeitswelten in der Forschungsgesellschaft kultur- und wissenschaftshistorisch untersucht: die Wissenschaft, zu der lange Zeit nur sehr wenige Frauen Zugang hatten, und das "Vorzimmer", in dem die meisten Frauen gearbeitet haben. Was hat weibliche Wissenschaftskarrieren in der MPG befördert, was behindert und welche Rolle spielte dabei das "Harnack-Prinzip", das MPG-eigene Strukturprinzip der persönlichkeitszentrierten Forschungsorganisation? Ein weiterer Fokus liegt auf den gleichstellungspolitischen Aushandlungsprozessen, die Ende der 1980er begannen und dazu beigetragen haben, die tradierte Geschlechterordnung der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft aufzubrechen und dort einen Kulturwandel herbeizuführen.

    Abstract: "Republicans and Democrats increasingly distrust, avoid, and wish harm upon those from the other party. To make matters worse, they also increasingly reside among like-minded others and are part of social groups that share their political beliefs. All of this can make expressing a dissenting political opinion hard. Yet digital and social media have given people new spaces for political discourse and community, and more control over who knows their political beliefs and who does not. With Democracy Lives in Darkness, Van Duyn looks at what these changes in the political and media landscape mean for democracy. She uncovers and follows a secret political organization in rural Texas over the entire Trump presidency. The group, which organized out of fear of their conservative community in 2016, has a confidentiality agreement, an email listserv and secret Facebook group, and meets in secret every month. By building relationships with members, she explores how and why they hide their beliefs and what this does for their own political behavior and for their community. Drawing on research from communication, political science, and sociology along with survey data on secret political expression, she finds that polarization has led even average partisans to hide their political beliefs from others. And although intensifying polarization will likely make political secrecy more common, she argues that this secrecy is not just evidence that democracy is hurting, but that it is still alive; that people persist in the face of opposition and that this matters if democracy is to survive"--

    Abstract: Based on extensive interviews and oral histories as well as archival sources, Women and the Islamic Republic challenges the dominant masculine theorizations of state-making in post-revolutionary Iran. Shirin Saeidi demonstrates that despite the Islamic Republic's non-democratic structures, multiple forms of citizenship have developed in post-revolutionary Iran. This finding destabilizes the binary formulation of democratization and authoritarianism which has not only dominated investigations of Iran, but also regime categorizations in political science more broadly. As non-elite Iranian women negotiate or engage with the state's gendered citizenry regime, the Islamic Republic is forced to remake, oftentimes haphazardly, its citizenry agenda. The book demonstrates how women remake their rights, responsibilities, and statuses during everyday life to condition the state-making process in Iran, showing women's everyday resistance to the state-making process

    Abstract: "American comics from the start have reflected the white supremacist culture out of which they arose. Superheroes and comic books in general are products of whiteness, and both signal and hide its presence. Even when comics creators and publishers sought to advance an antiracist agenda, their attempts were often undermined by a lack of awareness of their own whiteness and the ideological baggage that goes along with it. Even the most celebrated figures of the industry, such as Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, Jack Jackson, William Gaines, Stan Lee, Robert Crumb, Will Eisner, and Frank Miller, have not been able to distance themselves from the problematic racism embedded in their narratives despite their intentions or explanations.
