    Abstract: Über kaum ein anderes Land wird in Deutschland so viel geredet und gestritten: Zu Israel hat jeder eine Meinung. Warum ist das so? Wieso hat der Nahostkonflikt eine solche Bedeutung? Und warum ist die Debatte so emotional – und oft so vergiftet? Als Meron Mendel vor zwanzig Jahren nach Deutschland kam, stellte er überrascht fest, welche Bedeutung sein Heimatland Israel hier im öffentlichen Diskurs hatte. Schon damals konnten nahezu alle, mit denen er sprach, klare Positionen zu Israel und seiner Politik formulieren. Heute werden die Debatten noch heftiger geführt.     Abstract: The Japan-US Security Treaty was first signed in 1951, coinciding with the end of Allied occupation and Japan’s recovery of independence in the early postwar era, and subsequently revised in 1960 to correct various inadequacies and alleviate a sense of inequality felt on the Japanese side. Its basic structure, namely providing bases in exchange for the guarantee of US security of Japan, however, remains unchanged. Drawing on previously undisclosed confidential documents and new research developments on the issue of secret agreements which were brought to light during the Ministry of Foreign Affairs investigation in 2009-10, the author carefully depicts the sensitive negotiations and diplomatic finesse behind the establishment and revision of the Japan-US Security Treaty, highlighting the challenges experienced by the two countries to promote mutuality then and later, and adding a new chapter with updated notes for his revised 2020 edition. Examining the far-reaching implications of these new historical materials, he puts forward the pressing question: What should be the future of Japan-US security cooperation?

From 1956 to 1962, devastating military conflicts took place in China's southwestern and northwestern regions. Official record at the time scarcely made mention of the campaign, and in the years since only lukewarm acknowledgment of the violence has surfaced. When the Iron Bird Flies, by Jianglin Li, breaks this decades-long silence to reveal for the first time a comprehensive and explosive picture of the six years that would prove definitive in modern Tibetan and Chinese history. The CCP referred to the campaign as "suppressing the Tibetan rebellion."     Abstract: Bei der aufgeheizten politischen Debatte um sprachliche Grenzen und diskriminierende Wortverwendungen, stellt sich die Frage, welche Wörter man benutzen darf. Wo liegen beispielsweise die Unterschiede zwischen »Farbiger« und »Person of Color«? Dieses Buch erläutert, wieso das N-Wort aus der Sprache verschwindet, und hinterfragt kritisch, welche vergangenen Denkmuster in Wörtern wie »Naturvolk«, »Eingeborene« und »Tropenmedizin« stecken. Die Kulturwissenschaftlerin Susan Arndt setzt sich entlang konkreter Beispiele mit dem kolonialen Erbe in unserer Sprache auseinander. Darüber hinaus diskutiert sie die Zusammenhänge zwischen Sprache und Macht. Sie zeigt, welche Möglichkeiten wir haben, mit der kolonialen Vergangenheit in unserer Sprache umzugehen und wie neuere Begriffsverwendungen, wie »Indigene Menschen« oder »weiß«, Alternativen bieten.

    Abstract: Sprache wird meist als ein neutrales, abbildendes Medium gesehen. Ihre diskriminierende Funktion wird in der Regel in der öffentlichen Wahrnehmung auf Schimpfwörter beschränkt. Tatsächlich aber kommt Diskriminierung in verschleierter und übertragener Weise weit häufiger vor, als es auf den ersten Blick erscheint. Manche Begriffe sind nicht von vorneherein rassistisch, werden aber durch die Art ihrer Verwendung rassistisch aufgeladen. Un- oder unterbewusster oder "gut gemeinter" Rassismus in alltäglichen Sprachpraktiken wird mit konkreten Beispielen aufgedeckt und es werden Alternativen angeboten. Die Reihe wird herausgegeben von Antje Lann Hornscheidt, Professorin für Gender Studies und Sprachanalyse am Zentrum für transdisziplinäre Gender Studies der Humboldt-Universität Berlin.

    Abstract: Schon vor 50 Jahren kämpfte Afrika um seine Kunst, die während der Kolonialzeit massenweise in europäische Museen gelangt war. Und es fand durchaus Unterstützung im Westen. Am Ende jedoch war der Kampf nicht nur vergebens, er wurde auch erfolgreich vergessen gemacht. Auf der Grundlage von unzähligen unbekannten Quellen aus Europa und Afrika erzählt Bénédicte Savoy die gespenstische Geschichte einer verpassten Chance, einer Niederlage, die heute mit umso größerer Wucht auf uns zurückschlägt. Afrikas Bemühungen um seine in der Kolonialzeit nach Europa verbrachte Kunst sind keineswegs neu. Schon bald nach 1960, als 18 ehemalige Kolonien die Unabhängigkeit erlangten, wurde von afrikanischen Intellektuellen, Politikern und Museumsleuten eine ungeheure Dynamik in Gang gesetzt. In ganz Europa suchten daraufhin Politikerinnen und Politiker, Journalisten, Akademiker und einige Museumsleute einen Weg, afrikanische Kulturgüter im Sinne einer postkolonialen und postrassistischen Solidarität zurückzugeben. Die Argumente aber, mit denen andere versuchten, die Forderungen aus Afrika zu entkräften und Lösungen zu verhindern, ähneln auf frappierende Weise denen von heute. Schließlich verlief alles im Sand. „Gebt koloniale Raubkunst zurück! Dafür engagiert sich Bénédicte Savoy. In ihrem Buch zeigt die Kunsthistorikerin nun, dass ihr Kampf ein alter ist. Schon in den 1960er-Jahren drängten die neu gegründeten Staaten Afrikas auf eine Rückführung – erfolglos. Following a remarkable transition from authoritarian rule to robust democracy, this island society has become a prosperous but widely unrecognized nation-state for which no uncontested sovereign space exists. Increasingly vigorous assertions of Taiwanese identity expose the fragility of relationships between the United States and other great powers that assume Taiwan will eventually unite with China. Perhaps because of their precarious international position, Taiwanese have embraced cosmopolitan culture and democratic institutions more fully than most Asians. The 2014 Sunflower Movement, in which demonstrators occupied parliament to protest a free trade agreement with China, thrust Taiwan politics into the global media spotlight, as did the resounding victory of the once-illegal Democratic Progressive Party in 2016. Taiwan in Dynamic Transition provides an up-to-date treatment of contemporary Taiwan, highlighting Taiwan's emergent nationhood and its implications for world politics. The book provides a new interpretive framework and series of case studies that together construct a vivid picture of how contemporary Taiwanese think about their nationhood, with specific examples of nation-building and democratization in social practice.     Abstract: On the basis on solid fieldwork in northern Nigeria including participant observation, interviews with Izala, Sufis, and religion experts, and collection of unpublished material related to Izala, three aspects of the development of Izala past and present are analysed: its split, its relationship to Sufis, and its perception of sharīʿa re-implementation. “Field Theory” of Pierre Bourdieu, “Religious Market Theory” of Rodney Start, and “Modes of Religiosity Theory” of Harvey Whitehouse are theoretical tools of understanding the religious landscape of northern Nigeria and the dynamics of Islamic movements and groups.

Since the end of the war there have been various attempts at reconciliation, and indeed, periods in which Japan has enjoyed good relations with China and also with South Korea. Despite that, historical issues have overheated in the twenty-first century, and their effects may extend beyond Japan's relations with China and South Korea to impact its relations with the United States, Southeast Asia, and Europe. --

    Abstract: "Decolonization and Anti-colonial Praxis presents research on contemporary forms of decolonization and anti-colonialism in practice. It pertains to the ways in which individuals, groups, and communities engage with the logic of epistemic colonial power within areas of citizenship, migration, education, Indigeneity, language, land struggle, and social work. The contributions in this edited volume empirically document the conceptual and bodily engagement of racialized and violated individuals and communities as they use anti-colonial principles to disrupt criminalizing institutional discourses and policies within various global imperial contexts. The terms 'Decolonization' and 'Anti-colonialism' are used in diverse and interdisciplinary academic perspectives. They are researched upon and elaborated in necessary ways in the theoretical literature, however, it is rare to see these principles employed in applied forms. Decolonization and Anti-colonial Praxis provides a much needed contemporary and representative reclamation of these concepts from the standpoint of racialized communities. It explores the frameworks and methods rooted in their indigeneity, cultural history and memories to imagine a new future. The research findings and methodological tools presented in this book will be of interdisciplinary interest to teachers, graduate students and researchers.     Abstract: Sociologically speaking, Islam is what Muslims do. From this premise, the book elaborates a sociology of Islam in three major chapters. They show Islam has operated as a cluster of practical orientations ("lifeworlds") that established it as a presence in three fields of social life: global networks, public philosophies, and participatory ethics. The book argues that all three are poorly understood in recent literature, which tends to focus on one specific problem or another, and then in isolation from global and historical contexts. The book argues that the larger preoccupations of ordinary Muslims...how to imagine a global society; how to guide life in the manner of a total philosophy; and how to relate to the world of daily struggles in forums and social movements...are neither unique to the present period nor to religious life. But the career of a particular religion offers a focused empirical lens through which we may offer meaningful propositions about the more general form of these concerns

    Abstract: This thesis examines West Germany's relationship with Namibia between 1969 and 1990. It investigates West German foreign policy towards Namibia, at the height of the Namibian liberation struggle, against the backdrop of East and West German rivalry. It brings to light that the post-war division of Germany into two separate states significantly impacted both German states' policies towards Namibia. The Federal Republic of Germany's (FRG) changing approach towards the German Democratic Republic (GDR) is analysed in relation to the Federal Republic's shifting attitude towards the South West Africa People's Organisation (SWAPO), Namibia's leading national liberation movement. It shows that the political dynamic that drove the normalisation of relations between East and West Germany played a key role in West Germany's move towards supporting SWAPO in the mid-to-late 1970. Furthermore, this thesis demonstrates that the Federal Republic's political landscape was dominated by political division over the issue of SWAPO's role in Namibia's future. This dissertation therefore examines the diverging views among political parties and its wider effects on shaping West Germany's policy towards Namibia. It calls to attention that political discord led to attempts by political factions to influence events in Namibia, independent of the Federal Government, through alternative instruments of foreign policy. Particular attention is also paid to the ideological underpinnings that promoted or hindered interactions and co-operation between East and West Germany in Namibia, on the one hand, and the two German states and SWAPO on the other. It reveals that West Germany's attitude towards SWAPO cannot be separated from the wider realities of the Cold War. In particular, it shows that the normalization of relations between West Germany and SWAPO can only be fully understood against the backdrop of intra-German rivalry

    Abstract: "After decades of mismanagement and direct military rule, Myanmar's contested transition to a more democratic government has rapidly shifted the outlook in this significant Southeast Asian nation. Since 2011, the removal of Western sanctions and new foreign investments have resulted in high rates of economic growth and an expanding middle class, albeit from a very low base. In a result unthinkable a few years earlier, former political prisoner and Nobel laureate, Aung San Suu Kyi, and her party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), formed a national government in early 2016. However, despite significant political and economic reforms since the liberalisation process commenced, the transition to civilian rule remains constrained by the military's 2008 Constitution, which guarantees that it operates unfettered by civilian oversight. As a result, although some ethnic conflicts have abated, others continue to fester while new conflicts have erupted. With a daunting task ahead the NLD government has made some progress in removing the vestiges of repressive military-era laws but many remain untouched and some of the practices of the new government provide unwelcome reminders of its authoritarian history. This timely Handbook describes the political, economic, cultural and strategic dimensions of this crucial period of transition in Myanmar life. It presents explanations for contradictory trends, including those that defy some of the early narratives about the comprehensive transformation of Myanmar life.     Abstract: Mirrored Loss tells the story of Amat al-Latif al Wazir, only daughter of 'Abdullah al-Wazir, the leader of Yemen's constitutional movement of the mid-twentieth century for democratisation of the autocratic imamate. Her relationship with her adored father, who was accused of treason, takes centre stage in this biographical narrative. Amat enjoyed a privileged childhood in a high-ranking family at the heart of Yemeni politics; yet the failed revolt of 1948 was the family's downfall, leaving her and other close relatives exposed to social indignities and privation. She then spent many years in exile, where she suffered a personal calamity that compounded the earlier catastrophe. Through one family's story, Gabriele vom Bruck explores how violence translates into tragedy in the personal realm, and how individual lives and larger cultural and political worlds intersect in Yemen. Her narrative makes these tragic events compellingly tangible, especially at the level of gendered subjectivity--female Yemenis have been either unknown to or deemed insignificant by most male historians of this period. Mirrored Loss is a significant step in righting that omission

    Abstract: Anhand ausgewählter Bilder und Objekte diskutiert dieser Band zentrale Fragen zur Geschichte der Rassenkonstruktion und Rasseideologie. Gemeinsam mit Autorinnen und Autoren aus Forschung und Bildungspraxis beleuchtet das Kuratorenteam die geopolitische Dimension des Rassismus während des Kolonialismus und setzt sich mit der Rolle des Deutschen Hygiene-Museums in der NS-Rassenpropaganda auseinander. Im Kontext aktueller Fluchtbewegungen betrachten sie die Nachwirkungen des kolonialen Zeitalters und zeigen, welche Dynamik in einer sozial und kulturell vielfältigen Gesellschaft steckt. Im Zentrum vieler Beiträge steht die Frage, inwieweit die unbedachte Reproduktion rassistischer Bilder in Wissenschaft, Politik und Alltag - oder auch in Ausstellungen - zu ihrer anhaltenden Wirkungsmacht beiträgt? Wäre es nicht konsequent, solche Bilder gar nicht erst zu zeigen? Ab wann ist ein Gegenstand rassistisch? Trifft das bereits auf die Darstellung der körperlichen Unterschiede von Menschen zu? Gibt es ganz andere, noch nie gesehene Gegenbilder?

Rezension: Schon 2016 gab der renommierte Professor für Sinologie am Kings College in London, Kerry Brown, eine Biografie zu Xi Jinping heraus ("CEO China: the rise of Xi Jinping", Tauris, 2016). Im vorliegenden nur 160 Seiten starken Buch versucht er, das Gedankengut des chinesischen Führers tiefer zu durchdringen. Er unterteilt dieses dabei in 9 Kapitel, in denen er den Werdegang, die Werte und die politischen Ideen Xi's nachzeichnet. Er geht wiederholt auf die Entwicklungsgeschichte der kommunistischen Partei unter den Führern Mao Zedong und Deng Xiaoping ein und vergleicht Xi mit ihnen. Der Text lässt Kritik und Distanz vermissen und setzt Vorwissen über die politischen und wirtschaftlichen Verhältnisse Chinas voraus, ist aber gut lesbar. (3)

    Abstract: Der Umgang mit der Kolonialgeschichte, die hierzulande lange im Schatten der Aufarbeitung des Nationalsozialismus und des Holocaust stand, unterliegt gegenwärtig einem grundlegenden Wandel. Zwar zählt auch Deutschland faktisch zu den postkolonialen Gesellschaften Europas, doch ist diese Tatsache kaum in das Bewusstsein der Menschen und in das Handeln der Politik vorgedrungen. Der Sammelband zieht Bilanz und will zugleich die notwendige Auseinandersetzung um eine Dekolonisierung globaler wie lokaler Machtverhältnisse und eine Dekolonialisierung der immer noch dominierenden Wissens- und Deutungsmacht des "Westens" anregen. Die aktuellen Debatten um den Völkermord an den Herero und Nama oder die koloniale Beutekunst im geplanten Humboldt Forum in Berlin richten den Fokus ein ums andere Mal auf eine koloniale Vergangenheit, die nicht vergehen will

    Abstract: Lange vor „IS“ und „Boko Haram“ galt die messianisch-christliche „Lord’s Resistance Army“ (LRA) in Uganda als die vielleicht brutalste Rebellengruppe Afrikas oder der Welt – und als eine, die sich sehr klar auf die Entführung, „Rekrutierung“ und den Einsatz Minderjähriger als KämpferInnen spezialisiert hat. Dieses Buch zeigt die Erkenntnisse eines Forschungsprojekts über ehemalige KindersoldatInnen in Norduganda und ihre „Reintegration“ in den gesellschaftlichen und familialen Alltag nach ihrer Rückkehr ins zivile Leben. Biographische Verläufe von Ex-KindersoldatInnen vor, während und nach der Zeit ihrer Entführung werden vorgestellt. Die AutorInnen untersuchen, wie sie ins zivile Leben zurückfanden, welche Beziehungsstrukturen oder sozialen Figurationen sich danach zwischen ihnen und den ZivilistInnen sowie insbesondere ihren Herkunftsfamilien beobachten lassen und welche alltagsweltlichen Bedingungen einen Übergang ins zivile Leben erleichtern oder erschweren.
