    Abstract: A panoramic history of rules in the Western worldRules order almost every aspect of our lives. They set our work hours, dictate how we drive and set the table, tell us whether to offer an extended hand or cheek in greeting, and organize the rites of life, from birth through death. We may chafe under the rules we have, and yearn for ones we don’t, yet no culture could do without them. In Rules, historian Lorraine Daston traces their development in the Western tradition and shows how rules have evolved from ancient to modern times. Drawing on a rich trove of examples, including legal treatises, cookbooks, military manuals, traffic regulations, and game handbooks, Daston demonstrates that while the content of rules is dazzlingly diverse, the forms that they take are surprisingly few and long-lived.Daston uncovers three enduring kinds of rules: the algorithms that calculate and measure, the laws that govern, and the models that teach. She vividly illustrates how rules can change—how supple rules stiffen, or vice versa, and how once bothersome regulations become everyday norms. Rules have been devised for almost every imaginable activity and range from meticulous regulations to the laws of nature. Daston probes beneath this variety to investigate when rules work and when they don’t, and why some philosophical problems about rules are as ancient as philosophy itself while others are as modern as calculating machines.Rules offers a wide-angle view on the history of the constraints that guide us—whether we know it or not

Yarden Katz reveals the ideology embedded in the concept of artificial intelligence, contending that it both serves and mimics the logic of white supremacy. He demonstrates that understandings of AI, as a field and a technology, have shifted dramatically over time based on the needs of its funders and the professional class that formed around it. From its origins in the Cold War military-industrial complex through its present-day Silicon Valley proselytizers and eager policy analysts, AI has never been simply a technical project enabled by larger data and better computing.     Abstract: This is the first monograph devoted to the work of one of the foremost contemporary advocates of contemporary critical theory, Andrew Feenberg. It focuses on Feenberg's central concept, technical politics, and explores his suggestion that democratising technology design is key to a strategic understanding of the process of civilisational change. In this way, it presents Feenberg's intervention as the necessary bridge between various species of critical constructivism and wider visions of the kind of change that are urgently needed to move human society onto a more sustainable footing. The book describes the development of Feenberg's thought out of the tradition of Marx and Marcuse, and presents critical analyses of his main ideas: the theory of formal bias, technology's ambivalence, progressive rationalisation, and the theory of primary and secondary instrumentalisation. Technical politics identifies a limitation of Feenberg's work associated with his attachment to critique, as the opposite pole to a negative kind of rationality (instrumentalism). It concludes by offering a utopian corrective to the theory that can provide a fuller account of the process of willed technological transformation and of the author's own idea of a technologically authorised socialism

    Abstract: In What’s the Use? Sara Ahmed continues the work she began in The Promise of Happiness and Willful Subjects by taking up a single word—in this case, use—and following it around. She shows how use became associated with life and strength in nineteenth-century biological and social thought and considers how utilitarianism offered a set of educational techniques for shaping individuals by directing them toward useful ends. Ahmed also explores how spaces become restricted to some uses and users, with specific reference to universities. She notes, however, the potential for queer use: how things can be used in ways that were not intended or by those for whom they were not intended. Ahmed posits queer use as a way of reanimating the project of diversity work as the ordinary and painstaking task of opening up institutions to those who have historically been excluded.

    Note: Description based upon print version of record , This volume presents the theory of culture of the Russian-born German Jewish social philosopher David Koigen (1879-1933). Heir to Hermann Cohen's neo-Kantian interpretation of Judaism as a religion of reason, he draws upon philosophical anthropology and the sociology of religion to go beyond Kantian formalism. The resulting primacy given to religious consciousness brought him close to Martin Buber, with whom he shared an interest in East European Hasidism as a source of religious renewal. Author of Ideen zur Philosophie der Kultur (1910) and Der moralische Gott (1922), among other works, Koigen enters a much wider debate on the relation between religion, culture and conceptions of the nation, developing a non-essentialist approach to religion and ethnicity. Enjoining the concept of ethos as the arbiter of ethnos and ethics he formulates a theory of culture on the basis of Jewish monotheism that would pose a challenge to Liberal Judaism and Liberal Protestantism alike. Among his interlocutors were Max Scheler, Georg Simmel, Ernst Troeltsch, and Max Weber. His elucidation of the complex interplay between Judaism's concept of covenant and its attendant ethos offers a novel approach to the construction of a modern Jewish identity. The theoretical value of the notion of ethos for the sociology of religion is most succinctly expressed in a lecture on the ethos in Judaism which is presented and annotated for a first time in this volume.     Abstract: Andrew Sayer undertakes a fundamental critique of social science's difficulties in acknowledging that people's relation to the world is one of concern. As sentient beings, capable of flourishing and suffering, and particularly vulnerable to how others treat us, our view of the world is substantially evaluative. Yet modernist ways of thinking encourage the common but extraordinary belief that values are beyond reason, and merely subjective or matters of convention, with little or nothing to do with the kind of beings people are, the quality of their social relations, their material circumstances or well-being. The author shows how social theory and philosophy need to change to reflect the complexity of everyday ethical concerns and the importance people attach to dignity. He argues for a robustly critical social science that explains and evaluates social life from the standpoint of human flourishing

    Abstract: "This book brings together a team of leading theorists to address the question 'What is the right measure of justice?' Some contributors, following Amartya Sen and Martha Nussbaum, argue that we should focus on capabilities, or what people are able to do and to be. Others, following John Rawls, argue for focussing on social primary goods, the goods which society produces and which people can use. Still others see both views as incomplete and complementary to one another. Their essays evaluate the two approaches in the light of particular issues of social justice - education, health policy, disability, children, gender justice - and the volume concludes with an essay by Amartya Sen, who originated the capabilities approach"--Provided by publisher

    Abstract: Who are scientists? What kind of people are they? What capacities and virtues are thought to stand behind their considerable authority? They are experts-indeed, highly respected experts-authorized to describe and interpret the natural world and widely trusted to help transform knowledge into power and profit. But are they morally different from other people? The Scientific Life is historian Steven Shapin's story about who scientists are, who we think they are, and why our sensibilities about such things matter. Conventional wisdom has long held that scientists are neither better nor worse than anyone else, that personal virtue does not necessarily accompany technical expertise, and that scientific practice is profoundly impersonal. Shapin, however, here shows how the uncertainties attending scientific research make the virtues of individual researchers intrinsic to scientific work. From the early twentieth-century origins of corporate research laboratories to the high-flying scientific entrepreneurship of the present, Shapin argues that the radical uncertainties of much contemporary science have made personal virtues more central to its practice than ever before, and he also reveals how radically novel aspects of late modern science have unexpectedly deep historical roots.     Abstract: Jürgen Habermas vertritt die These, dass sich das Konsensprinzip des kommunikativen Handelns in den Meinungs- und Willensbildungsprozess der Politik übertragen lasse. In der vorliegenden grundlegenden Kritik zeigt die Autorin, dass diese These nicht haltbar ist. Anders als Habermas annimmt, findet kommunikatives Handeln keinen Eingang in die Prozeduralität der Politik. Das politische Handeln wird vielmehr durch systemische Vorgaben bestimmt. Millers klar und unprätentiös geschriebenes Buch verdient es, in einem Atemzug mit den Werken von Rawls und Walzer genannt zu werden. Glanzstücke seiner Argumentation sind unter anderem seine Bemerkungen zur Rolle von Glück bei der Beurteilung von Leistungen für das Gerechtigkeitsempfinden. - Biographical note: David Miller lehrt Sozialphilosophie und politische Theorie am Nuffield College in Oxford.

Welche Bedeutung kommt dem Tod zu nach Überwindung der christlich-mittelalterlichen Seelenvorstellungen im Zuge der Aufklärung?Die Studie rekonstruiert die wechselseitigen Bezüge zwischen Wissen und Tod, die der Bildung dieses Begriffs zugrunde liegen. Die soziale Reichweite des Scheintodes wird mittels konkurrierender Deutungsmuster und kultureller Praktiken des Umgangs mit Tod und Sterben untersucht, zu denen neben Diskursen aus der Medizin oder Theologie religiöses und überliefertes Wissen zählen

    Abstract: Main description: Die Studie zeigt, dass es eine Verkürzung des aufklärerischen Diskurses wäre, betrachtete man das Vorurteil nur als einen der von der Aufklärung anvisierten Angriffspunkte. Der Vorurteilsdiskurs wird vielmehr zum Modus der Selbstaufklärung der Aufklärung. Im literarischen und popularphilosophischen Nachdenken über das Vorurteil erschüttern anthropologiebasierte Argumente die rationale Gewissheit, mit der Vorurteile kritisiert und durch Wahrheit ersetzt werden sollten. Fragen nach der Funktion von Vorurteilen und nach Wegen, mit ihnen umzugehen, ersetzen philosophische Begriffe und Typologien.
    Abstract: Main description: This study argues that it would be a foreshortening of Enlightenment discourse to regard prejudice merely as one of the bugbears the Enlightenment set out to dismantle. Rather, the discourse on prejudice served as a mode of self-enlightenment. Anthropologically oriented arguments advanced in literary and popular philosophical reflection on prejudice unsettled the rational certainty with which prejudices were criticized and replaced by the truth. Inquiries into the function of prejudices and attempts to find ways of engaging with them figured as substitutes for philosophical concepts and typologies.

    Abstract: Wie vollzog sich die evolutionstheoretische Transformation der Rassentheorien im Kontext der sogenannten Darwinianischen Revolution? Diese Frage wird nur auf den ersten Blick durch die große Zahl ideengeschichtlicher Arbeiten beantwortet, denn sie lassen die konkreten Bedingungen dieses Wandels im Dunkeln. Thomas Gondermann unterzieht die sozialen Formationen im Umfeld Darwins, ihre rassentheoretischen Ansätze und wissenschaftspolitischen Kampagnen einer minutiösen Untersuchung. Diese zeigt das Zusammenspiel von sozialer und kognitiver Dimension des evolutionstheoretischen Wandels der Rassentheorien und legt seine enge soziale Beziehung zur Etablierung der Evolutionstheorien in den Naturwissenschaften dar

    Abstract: Die Evidenz von 'Rasse' und 'Geschlecht' in der physischen Anthropologie um 1900 verdankt sich vor allem metrisch-statistischen Verfahren und mechanisch-objektiven Visualisierungen. Die materialreiche Studie analysiert die anthropologische Wissensproduktion als heterogenen, unabgeschlossenen Prozess, in dem 'rassische' und 'geschlechtliche' Differenzen hervorgebracht und gleichzeitig unterlaufen werden. Es wird eine medientheoretische und methodische Perspektive entworfen, die Diskursanalyse (Foucault) mit dekonstruktivistischer Lektürepraxis (Derrida, Butler) produktiv verbindet und an aktuelle Science Studies (Latour, Rheinberger) anknüpft

    Abstract: Ist in der soziologischen Systemtheorie von Inklusion und Exklusion die Rede, wird ein kontroverser Theoriebereich berührt. Besonders umstritten ist der Begriff der Exklusion als Kern einer Systemtheorie sozialer Ungleichheit. Häufig übersehen wird dabei der theorieinterne Rahmen der Unterscheidung, ohne dessen Kenntnis die Widersprüche einer Systemtheorie sozialer Exklusion nicht gelöst werden können. Die Studie von Sina Farzin rekonstruiert systematisch die Ausarbeitung der Differenz Inklusion/Exklusion im Werk Niklas Luhmanns. Dabei treten deutlich die Begriffsverschiebungen hervor, die zur Problematisierung der Unterscheidung in der jüngeren Forschung geführt haben
