Kurzfassung: "Almost immediately after jazz became popular nationally in the United States in the early 20th century, American writers responded to what this exciting art form signified for listeners. This book takes an expansive view of the relationship between this uniquely American music and other aspects of American life, including books, films, language, and politics. Observing how jazz has become a cultural institution, widely celebrated as 'America's classical music,' the book also never loses sight of its beginnings in Black expressive culture and its enduring ability to critique problems of democracy or speak back to violence and inequality, from Jim Crow to George Floyd. Taking the reader through time and across expressive forms, this volume traces jazz as an aesthetic influence, a political force, and a representational focus in American literature and culture. It shows how Jazz has long been a rich source of aesthetic stimulation, influencing writers as stylistically wide-ranging as Langston Hughes, Eudora Welty, and James Baldwin, or artists as diverse as Aaron Douglas, Jackson Pollock, and Gordon Parks."

Kurzfassung: Lasting from 1979 to 2015, China's One Child Policy is often remembered as one of the most ambitious social engineering projects to date and considered emblematic of global efforts to regulate population growth during the twentieth century. Drawing on a rich combination of archival research and oral history, Sarah Mellors Rodriguez analyses how ordinary people, particularly women, navigated China's shifting fertility policies before and during the One Child Policy era. She examines the implementation and reception of these policies and reveals that they were often contradictory and unevenly enforced, as men and women challenged, reworked, and co-opted state policies to suit their own needs. By situating the One Child Policy within the longer history of birth control and abortion in China, Reproductive Realities in Modern China exposes important historical continuities, such as the enduring reliance on abortion as contraception and the precariousness of state control over reproduction

Kurzfassung: "This volume offers new insights into the radical shift in attitudes towards death and the dead body that occurred in temperate Bronze Age Europe. Exploring the introduction and eventual dominance of cremation, Marie-Louise Stig Sørenson and Katharina Rebay-Salisbury apply a case-study approach to invexstigate how this transformation unfolded within local communities located throughout central to northern Europe. They demonstrate the deep link between the living and the dead body, and propose that the introduction of cremation was a significant ontological challenge to traditional ideas about death. In tracing the responses to this challenge, the authors focus on three fields of action: the treatment of the dead body, the construction of a burial place, and ongoing relationships with the dead body after burial. Interrogating cultural change at its most fundamental level, the authors elucidate the fundamental tension between openness towards the "new" and the conservative pull of the familiar and traditional"--

Kurzfassung: This Element explores the factors that lead the public to pay attention to and mobilize in support of victims of officer-involved killings. The author argues that race is the most important factor shaping both attention and mobilization. Black victims are statistically significantly more likely to trend on Google and get protested than victims of other races. Deaths of low threat Black victims are more likely to affect political interest, voter turnout, and protest rates, and only among young Black observers. This Element attributes this pattern to the fact that mobilization around officer-involved killings is responding to anti-Black discrimination, rather than general sentiments about police violence. It also finds that the local density of social justice organizations increases political mobilization.

Kurzfassung: High in the eastern Himalayan foothills, people had a unique vantage point on the British Empire. The Mizo Discovery of the British Raj presents a history of Mizoram in Northeast India told from historical Indigenous perspectives of encounters with empire from the 1890s to the 1920s. Based on a wide range of research and enriched by sources newly digitised by the author through the British Library's Endangered Archives Programme, Kyle Jackson sheds new light on the complex and violent processes of how and why diverse populations of highland clans in the Indo-Burmese borderlands came to redeïne themselves as Christian Mizos. By using historical Indigenous concepts and logics to approach early twentieth-century imperial encounters, Jackson guides readers into a decolonial history of Northeast India, demonstrating the value of thinking not just about the histories of colonized peoples and concepts but also with them

Kurzfassung: In this timely book Nino Vallen tells the story of New Spain's gradual integration into the Pacific Basin and challenges established views about identity formation among the elites of colonial Mexico. It examines how discussions about the establishment and desirability of transpacific connections interacted with more general debates over why some people deserved certain benefits over others. As part of these struggles, New Spain's changing place at the crossroads of transatlantic and transpacific routes became a subject of contention between actors moved by competing notions of a deserving self: the learned councillor, the veteran, the discoverer, the meritorious, the creole and the merchant. Reassessing current historiographical narratives on creole identities and worldviews, Being the Heart of the World contributes to a broader understanding of the early modern self and the ways in which it was shaped by the mobilities of an increasingly globalized world.

Kurzfassung: This groundbreaking study tells the story of the highly organised, international legal court case for the abolition of slavery spearheaded by Prince Lourenço da Silva Mendonça in the seventeenth century. The case, presented before the Vatican, called for the freedom of all enslaved people and other oppressed groups. This included New Christians (Jews converted to Christianity) and Indigenous Americans in the Atlantic World, and Black Christians from confraternities in Angola, Brazil, Portugal and Spain. Abolition debate is generally believed to have been dominated by white Europeans in the eighteenth century. By centring African agency, José Lingna Nafafé offers a new perspective on the abolition movement, showing, for the first time, how the legal debate was begun not by Europeans, but by Africans. In the first book of its kind, Lingna Nafafé underscores the exceptionally complex nature of the African liberation struggle, and demystifies the common knowledge and accepted wisdom surrounding African slavery.

Kurzfassung: "This book tracks some of the novel and colorful journeys that British theatre embarked upon over the course of the eighteenth century, from nation to empire and back again. It examines unstudied circuits of theatrical performance extending across the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans to encompass London, Kingston (and other urban centers of Jamaica), Calcutta, Fort Marlborough (Sumatra), St. Helena and Port Jackson (New South Wales), as well as London and archipelagic provincial towns. In each space, the performance of British drama helped consolidate a national and imperial culture that was being forged both within and beyond the nation's borders. Yet in crisscrossing political and oceanic boundaries, and circulating texts, bodies, ideas and practices meant to incarnate the best of the English, and, secondarily, British character, the stage also mobilized competing ideas about authority, cultural difference and national belonging that emanated from the small as well as the great across the flow of practices of everyday life in Britain's expansive domains. Retailing historical myths and collective fantasies, including the helpful if fictive notion of a "national character" itself, theatre was the ultimate emblem of English cultural and racial capital in an age of sail, seizing the imaginations and animating the actions of British subjects and their others ceaselessly traversing the globe"--

Kurzfassung: "This book focuses on the female slaves of the Ottoman imperial court who lived in the imperial harem between the second half of the seventeenth century and the end of the eighteenth, and who were later manumitted and transferred from the palace. Through an analysis of a wide range of hitherto unexplored archival and historical sources, it aims to explore the various aspects of female palace slaves' lives. The book's main argument is that the manumission of female palace slaves and their departure from the palace did not mean the severing of their ties with the imperial court; rather, it signaled the beginning of a new kind of relationship that would continue in various ways until their death. This evolving relationship had implications for several parties, including the manumitted female palace slaves, the imperial court, and urban society. By tracing these women's ongoing relations with the imperial court and patronage networks after their time in the harem, this book aims to reconstruct the lives of manumitted female palace slaves in an attempt to recapture what it meant to be a palace woman in the Ottoman world. It also explores the roles and places that palace women held in the imperial court. In doing so, it offers not just a new way of understanding the workings of the imperial court, but also a new way of understanding the lives of the actors within it"--

Kurzfassung: "Ma dama al-shabab m'ana fainana la shaka najihun With the youth at our side, there is no doubt we will succeed.1 This slogan from the Kata'ib, a Lebanese youth organization, reflects a sentiment shared across the globe in the twentieth century: youth, however defined-by age, class, gender- mattered. Kata'ib leadership knew this, and surely had the youth with them, whether measured by the tens of thousands of young Kata'ib members, their investment in the group's ideology, or their participation in Kata'ib rituals. In July 1958, for example, the Kata'ib held a ceremony for new members at its headquarters in Beirut, Bayt al-Kata'ib, or the "Kata'ib home." In the space that hosted many gatherings, ranging from lectures to sport tournaments, young men and women congregated alongside party officials and supporters to "perform the oath" (ta'diyya al-yamin). This included the routine dedication to party and nation, "in service of Lebanon," another Kata'ib slogan since the 1930s. Thereafter, recruits received their membership cards from the president of the party, Pierre Gemayel. He congratulated each individual on their "engagement in the new party life."2 The event then ended with the singing of the Kata'ib anthem, played by its very own band"--

Kurzfassung: Snowflake CEO Frank Slootman is one of the tech world's most accomplished executives in enterprise growth, having led Snowflake to the largest software IPO ever after leading Data Domain and ServiceNow to exponential growth and the public market before that. In Amp It Up, he shares his leadership approach for the first time. Amp It Up delivers an authoritative look at what it takes to transform an organization for maximum growth and scale. Slootman shows that most leaders have significant room to improve their organization's performance without making expensive changes to their talent, structure, or fundamental business model-and they don't need to bring in an army of consultants to do it. What they do need is to align people around what matters and execute with urgency and intensity every day. Leading for unprecedented growth means declaring war on mediocrity, breaking the status quo, and making conflicted choices daily, all with a relentless focus on the mission. Amp It Up provides the first principles to guide that change, and the tactical advice for organizing a company around them. Perfect for executives, entrepreneurs, founders, managers, and leaders of all kinds, Amp It Up is a must-have resource for anyone who seeks to unleash the growth potential of a company and scale it to heights they never thought possible.

Kurzfassung: The literature of ideas. When author Pamela Sargent used those words to describe science fiction in 1975, the genre had exploded into the literary mainstream. As a literature of ideas, science fiction has proven to be a powerful metaphor for the world around us, offering a rich tapestry of imagination through which to explore how we lead, how we think, and how we interact. To Boldly Go assembles more than thirty writers from around the world to help us better understand ourselves through the lens of science fiction. Each chapter of To Boldly Go draws out the lessons that we can learn from science fiction, drawing on classic examples of the genre. A chapter on the burdens of leadership by Ghost Fleet author August Cole launches readers into the cosmos with Captain Avatar aboard the space battleship Yamato. In another chapter, the climactic Battle of the Mutara Nebula from The Wrath of Khan weighs the advantages of experience over intelligence in the pursuit of strategy. Whether using Star Trek: Deep Space Nine to explore the nuances of maritime strategy or The Expanse to better understand the threat posed by depleted natural resources, To Boldly Go provides thoughtful essays on relevant subjects that will appeal to business leaders, military professionals, and fans of science fiction alike.

Kurzfassung: After a lifetime of overachieving, aiming to be excellent at everything, and three failed tech startups in Silicon Valley, Kelly Trach was stirred by a simple question: What if I just did what I'm good at? Now a six-figure business coach, Kelly poses the same question to you: What if you just did what you're good at? Despite conventional wisdom, the gifts and experience you need are already innate. Having that "it factor" or "special ingredient" isn't as elusive as you may think. P.S. You're a Genius takes you on a self-reflective journey to find your own gifts, asking questions like: How are your idols a reflection of your own genius? What are you great at that nobody taught you how to do? How is your darkest shadow your greatest gift? What have you been unexpectedly criticized for? Through these questions and more, you'll uncover the ways you naturally excel, relinquish the lie that you're not "good enough," and discover how to convincingly convey your value to anyone. In the process, you'll unlock the gumption to go after what you really want and ditch the mindset blocks holding you back-because you have an inherent genius. You just have to find it.

Kurzfassung: The way we do business in the US and across the world has changed. We now meet through Zoom, Skype, Meet, and Teams. Those who sell virtually are likely to suffer a longer sales process. Since 82% of communication is non-verbal, virtual communication is difficult. There are many challenges in selling virtually. Virtual communication prevents us from generating as much trust as we could in face-to-face selling. The Virtual Sale is more abbreviated and condensed than a face-to-face engagement. It is also difficult to book appointments from Virtual Webinars. It is harder to close virtually since it is so easy for prospects and clients to stall you. Most business strategists believe that virtual communication is here to stay. Either you learn how to communicate on the virtual platform or your sales will permanently suffer. But if you can Master the Virtual Sale, your production will be even greater than in a face-to-face environment. In Mastering the Virtual Sale, you will learn how to: create trust using the virtual platform; book webinar appointments that don't cancel; increase your sales by 38% in 30 days using Virtual Sales techniques; prevent framing, sound, and video distractions; use the 5 Step Bridge to talk prospects and clients into buying from you; and explode your business with the "7 Strategies."

Kurzfassung: The steps you need, for the results you want. There's no shortage of advice out there on how to perform better, and better than others, at work. The problem is knowing which methods are actually proven to work-and how you should act on them to get the best results. In 8 Steps to High Performance, talent expert and bestselling author Marc Effron cuts through the noise with his signature "science-based simplicity" approach to identify what matters most and show you how to optimally apply your time and effort to boost your performance. It turns out that higher performance comes from doing many things well-but some of those things are not in your power to change. Effron reveals the eight key factors you do control and practical steps for improving yourself on each one. You'll learn: how to set goals that create higher performance; which behaviors predict higher performance in different situations; how to quickly develop the most important capabilities; who to connect with and why; how to understand and adapt to your company's strategy; why you sometimes shouldn't be the "genuine" you; how to best manage your body to sustain your performance; and how to avoid management fads that distract you from high performance. Research-based and practical, this short, powerful book will help you and anyone on your team deliver outstanding results.

Kurzfassung: Growth is the goal. To help people develop their potential, to articulate and become the self that they want to be, are capable of being, and that best serves them and others in the short and long term is what we as individuals and leaders strive toward. But how do we grow? It turns out it happens in a predictable way, which means we can understand where we are in our growth and chart a way forward. In this compact, complete guide, Whitney Johnson helps you envision how growth happens and proactively direct yourself, or others in your organization, to help make the leaps needed to achieve goals. The growth and learning journey comes in three phases, the Launch Point, the Sweet Spot, and the High End, and within each phase, we play roles that keep us moving toward our goals. Compelling examples of successful people will show you when growth is slow and why, and how to keep going, and what to do when growth and learning are almost too fast to keep up with, and how to leap from one growth journey to another. As individuals grow so do organizations and societies. Growth is learning put into action, ideally action that betters the world as we better ourselves and our small niches within it, both personal and professional. Growth occurs when learning is internalized, when we try something new and invest the effort to move it from being something we do, to something we are.

Kurzfassung: For decades, Democratic politicians have frustrated progressives by tinkering around the margins of policy while shying away from truly ambitious change. What happened to bold political vision on the left, and what shrunk the very horizons of possibility? In Thinking like an Economist, Elizabeth Popp Berman tells the story of how a distinctive way of thinking-an "economic style of reasoning"-became dominant in Washington between the 1960s and the 1980s and how it continues to dramatically narrow debates over public policy today. Introduced by liberal technocrats who hoped to improve government, this way of thinking was grounded in economics. At its core was an economic understanding of efficiency, and its advocates often found themselves allied with Republicans and in conflict with liberal Democrats who argued for rights, equality, and limits on corporate power. By the Carter administration, economic reasoning had spread throughout government policy and laws affecting poverty, healthcare, antitrust, transportation, and the environment. Thinking like an Economist offers critical lessons for the future. With the political left resurgent today, Democrats seem poised to break with the past-but doing so will require abandoning the shibboleth of economic efficiency and successfully advocating new ways of thinking about policy.

Kurzfassung: Conventional wisdom tells us that people are rational and make rational decisions with their money. But that's simply not true considering most people fail to beat the market. Conventional wisdom also tells us that there are two primary ways to approach the market: technical and fundamental analysis. Again, that is not true because if it were, everyone would be rich. It's obvious that something is missing. Author Adam Sarhan, founder and CEO of 50 Park Investments, developed a new approach, titled Psychological Analysis (PA). Coined by the author, PA teaches you how to make rational, not emotional, decisions with your money and shows you how to analyze both the individual and collective market mindset at a particular time based on the behavior and decision-making of people in the real-world. Psychological Analysis is designed to tip the odds of success in your favor. This invaluable guide helps you: make rational, not emotional, decisions with your money-especially when you are under pressure; understand the psyche of the market so you can learn how to join the Smart Money Circle and consistently take money out; generate above average returns in all market environments; and incorporate Psychological Analysis into your overall trading and investing strategy so you can make smarter decisions on and off Wall Street.

Kurzfassung: Data. It's the benchmark that informs corporate projections, decision-making, and analysis. But, why do many organizations that see themselves as data-driven fail to thrive? In Leading with AI and Analytics, two renowned experts from the Kellogg School of Management show business leaders how to transform their organization to become evidence-driven, which leads to real, measurable changes that can help propel their companies to the top of their industries. The availability of unprecedented technology-enabled tools has made AI (Artificial Intelligence) an essential component of business analytics. But what's often lacking are the leadership skills to integrate these technologies to achieve maximum value. Here, the authors provide a comprehensive game plan for developing that all-important human factor to get at the heart of data science: the ability to apply analytical thinking to real-world problems. Each of these tools and techniques comes to powerful life through a wealth of powerful case studies and real-world success stories. In this book, you'll find the essential tools to help you: develop a strong data science intuition quotient, lead and scale AI and analytics throughout your organization, move from "best-guess" decision making to evidence-based decisions, and craft strategies and tactics to create real impact.

Kurzfassung: Get inspired to start your own successful business! Bob Schlegel grew up on a struggling family farm, and like his entrepreneurial father, he took charge of his destiny by starting his own businesses-often more than one at a time. He and his wife Myrna partnered together in their early endeavors and raised a family of entrepreneurs. Their diverse startups included a chain of fifteen superior nursing and retirement centers, as well as the nation's leading manufacturer of paving stones and landscaping materials. Though they faced substantial challenges and even near-bankruptcy, they persevered and built highly profitable enterprises with the help of "angels"-both earthly and heavenly. Bob shares his experiences-his failures as well as his successes-with the goal of inspiring others to start their own businesses.

Kurzfassung: Uncompromising explores seven pathways to help you identify and live your why-leading to an impactful life and a lasting legacy. Steve White's path from the housing projects to president of Comcast West was punctuated by defining-and often heart-wrenching-moments. Moments that helped him identify what matters most and how he positively made a difference in his life and in those around him. As one of four boys raised by a single mother, Steve's life could easily have taken a different path. Instead, armed with his mother's determination that her sons make a better life for themselves and his own refusal to be shaped by his circumstances, Steve forged a path to extraordinary professional and personal achievement. Steve's lessons from every stage of life, and the people who influenced him along the way, form the basis of his overarching message: An uncompromising life is one where you stay true to what is important to you, what you believe in, and what you love. This leads to more fulfillment, purpose, and a lasting legacy. Steve's hard-won insights will help you pursue what matters most and discover where you can make the biggest difference.

Kurzfassung: When you think of a successful entrepreneur, who comes to mind? Bill Gates? Mark Zuckerberg? Or maybe even Jesse Eisenberg, the man who played Zuckerberg in The Social Network? It may surprise you that most successful founders look very different from Zuckerberg or Gates. In fact, most startup origin stories are very different from the famous "unicorns" that have achieved valuations of over $1 billion, from Facebook to Google to Uber. In The Unicorn's Shadow Ethan Mollick takes us to the forefront of an empirical revolution in entrepreneurship. New data and better research methods have overturned the conventional wisdom behind what a successful founder looks like, how they succeed, and how the startup ecosystem works. Among the issues he examines: which founders are most likely to succeed?; where do the best startup ideas come from?; what's the most foolproof way of securing the funding needed to take a company to the next level?; and what's the best way to grow and scale your company and create a thriving culture that won't hinder expansion? Mollick argues that entrepreneurship is too important, both for society and for the individuals who start companies, to be eclipsed by the shadows of unicorns. He shows we can democratize entrepreneurship-but only by following an evidence-based approach that puts to rest the false narratives that surround it.

Kurzfassung: Leadership is a set of abilities with which a lucky few are born. They're the natural relationship builders, master negotiators and persuaders, and agile and strategic thinkers. The good news for the rest of us is that those abilities can be developed. In The Leader's Brain: Enhance Your Leadership, Build Stronger Teams, Make Better Decisions, and Inspire Greater Innovation with Neuroscience, Wharton Neuroscience Initiative director Michael Platt explains how. Over two decades as a professor and practitioner in neuroscience, psychology, and marketing, Platt's pioneering research has deepened our understanding of how key areas of the brain work-and how that understanding can be applied in business settings. In The Leader's Brain, Platt explains: why two managers, when presented with the same set of information, make very different decisions; why some companies (Apple) build strong social and emotional connections with their customers and others do not (Samsung); how some of the most significant events in sports history, like the "Miracle on Ice," contain insights for how to build a team; and why even some of the most visionary business leaders can make disastrous decisions, and how to fix that. The Leader's Brain relates findings like these, and many more, to help enhance leadership in an ever-shifting world entering a "new normal."

Kurzfassung: Imagine living in a world in which you were routinely patronized by women. Imagine having your views ignored or your expertise frequently challenged by them. Imagine people always addressing the woman you are with before you. Now imagine a world in which the reverse of this is true. The Authority Gap provides a startling perspective on the unseen bias at work in our everyday lives, to reveal the scale of the gap that still persists between men and women. Would you believe that US Supreme Court Justices are interrupted four times more often than male ones . . . 96% of the time by men? Or that British parents, when asked to estimate their child's IQ, will place their son at 115 and their daughter at 107? Marshalling a wealth of data with precision and insight, and including interviews with pioneering women such as Baroness Hale, Mary Beard, and Bernadine Evaristo, Mary Ann Sieghart exposes unconscious bias in this fresh feminist take on how to address and counteract systemic sexism in ways that benefit us all.

Kurzfassung: Seamlessly entwining archival research and sociological debates, The Last Abolition is a lively and engaging historical narrative that uncovers the broad history of Brazilian anti-slavery activists and the trajectory of their work, from earnest beginnings to eventual abolition. In detailing their principles, alliances and conflicts, Angela Alonso offers a new interpretation of the Brazilian anti-slavery network which, combined, forged a national movement to challenge the entrenched pro-slavery status quo. While placing Brazil within the abolitionist political mobilization of the nineteenth century, the book explores the relationships between Brazilian and foreign abolitionists, demonstrating how ideas and strategies transcended borders. Available for the first time in an English language edition, with a new introduction, this award-winning volume is a major contribution to the scholarship on abolition and abolitionists.

Biosemiotics reveals meaningful communication among coevolving members of the intricately connected life forms on this dynamic planet. Within this web hominins developed culture from bipedalism and meat-eating to the use of fire, stone tools, and clothing, allowing wide migrations and adaptations. Archaeology and ancient DNA analysis show how fully modern humans overlapped with Neanderthals and Denisovans before emerging as the sole survivors of the genus Homo 35,000 years ago. Their visions of the world appear in magnificent cave paintings and bone sculptures of animals, then more recently in written narratives like the Gilgamesh epic and Euripides' Bacchae whose images still haunt us with anxieties about human efforts to control the natural world.

Kurzfassung: In the first comprehensive English-language portrait of Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm as political thinkers and actors, Jakob Norberg reveals how history's two most famous folklorists envisioned the role of literary and linguistic scholars in defining national identity. Convinced of the political relevance of their folk tale collections and grammatical studies, the Brothers Grimm argued that they could help disentangle language groups from one another, redraw the boundaries of states in Europe, and counsel kings and princes on the proper extent and character of their rule. They sought not only to recover and revive a neglected native culture for a contemporary audience, but also to facilitate a more harmonious and enduring relationship between the traditional political elite and an emerging national collective. Through close historical analysis, Norberg reconstructs how the Grimms wished to mediate between sovereigns and peoples, politics and culture. Kurzfassung: "Religion in 16th Century Mexico explores the development of religion as transferred from Spain to Tenochtitlan. The religious world of both Aztecs and Spanish Catholics at time of encounter was organized through large and small scale community, family, and personal devotions. Devotion expressed through cults was the single most salient aspect in the transfer of Catholicism to New World people. This book highlights the role that ideas such as afterlife, apocalypticism, iconoclasm, Marianism, resistance, and saints played in the emergence of Mexican Catholicism in the 16th century. The larger Atlantic world context, as seen in the regions of Iberia, Anahuac, and "New Spain", or central Mexico from Zacatecas to Oaxaca, is explored in detail. Beginning with an extensive historical essay to contextualize the precontact period, the bulk of this volume contains 118 separate keywords each with three comparative essays examining Aztec and Catholic religious practices before and after contact"--

Kurzfassung: "Under French colonial rule, the region of the Maghreb emerged as distinct from two other geographical entities that, too, are colonial inventions: the Middle East and Africa. In this book, Abdelmajid Hannoum demonstrates how the invention of the Maghreb started long before the conquest of Algiers and lasted until the time of independence, and beyond, to our present. Through an interdisciplinary study of French colonial modernity, Hannoum examines how colonialism made extensive use of translations of Greek, Roman, and Arabic texts and harnessed high technologies of power to reconfigure the region and invent it. In the process, he analyzes a variety of forms of colonial knowledge including historiography, anthropology, cartography, literary work, archaeology, linguistics, and racial theories. He shows how local engagement with colonial politics and its modes of knowledge were instrumental in the modern making of the region, including in its postcolonial era, as a single unit divorced from Africa and from the Middle East"--

Kurzfassung: This Element brings together the history of emotions and temporalities, offering a new perspective on both. Time was often imagined as a movement from the past to the future: the past is gone and the future not yet here. Only present-day subjects could establish relations to other times, recovering history as well as imagining and anticipating the future. In a movement paralleling the emphasis on the porous self, constituted by emotions situated not inside but between subjects, this Element argues for a porous present, which is open to the intervention of ghosts coming from the past and from the future. What needs investigating is the flow between times as much as the creation of boundaries between them, which first banishes the ghosts and then denies their existence. Emotions are the most important way through which subjects situate and understand themselves in time.

Kurzfassung: Before the Civil War, free African Americans and fugitive slaves crossed international borders to places like Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean in search of freedom and equality. Beacons of Liberty tells the story of how these bold migrants catalyzed contentious debates over citizenship, racial justice, and national character in the United States. Blending fresh historical analysis with incredible stories of escape and rebellion, Elena K. Abbott shows how the shifting geography of slavery and freedom beyond US borders helped shape the hopes and expectations of black radicals, white politicians, and fiery reformers engaged in the American anti-slavery movement. Featuring perspectives from activists and risk-takers like Mary Ann Shadd, Martin Delany, and James C. Brown, Beacons of Liberty illuminates the critical role that international free soil played in the long and arduous fight for emancipation and racial justice in the United States.

Kurzfassung: Few historians of the Vietnam War have covered the post-1975 era or engaged comprehensively with refugee politics, humanitarianism, and human rights as defining issues of the period. After Saigon's Fall is the first major work to uncover this history. Amanda C. Demmer offers a new account of the post-War normalization of US-Vietnam relations by centering three major transformations of the late twentieth century: the reassertion of the US Congress in American foreign policy; the Indochinese diaspora and changing domestic and international refugee norms; and the intertwining of humanitarianism and the human rights movement. By tracing these domestic, regional, and global phenomena, After Saigon's Fall captures the contingencies and contradictions inherent in US-Vietnamese normalization. Using previously untapped archives to recover a riveting narrative with both policymakers and nonstate advocates at its center, Demmer's book also reveals much about US politics and society in the last quarter of the twentieth century.

Kurzfassung: Dannelle Gutarra Cordero's expansive study incorporates writers, cultural figures and intellectuals from antiquity to the present day to analyze how discourses on emotion serve to create and maintain White supremacy and racism. Throughout history, scientific theories have played a vital role in the accumulation of power over colonized and racialized people. Scientific intellectual discourses on race, gender, and sexuality characterized Blackness as emotionally distinct in both deficiency and excess, a contrast with the emotional benevolence accorded to Whiteness. Ideas on racialized emotions have simultaneously driven the development of devastating body politics by enslaving structures of power. Bold and thought provoking, She Is Weeping provides a new understanding of racialized emotions in the Atlantic World, and how these discourses proved instrumental to the rise of slavery and racial capitalism, racialized sexual violence, and the expansion of the carceral state.

Kurzfassung: "This book examines the archival evidence related to the negotiations around Zimbabwe's decolonialization. The argument concerns the preoccupation with race as the primary way decolonization was negotiated. The first two chapters contextualize how the white settler states of Southern Africa, next two chapters detail the sudden shift in Cold War thinking about Rhodesia caused by the decolonization of Angola and Mozambique in 1975, including US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger's negotiations with Front Line State Presidents and South Africans. The Geneva Conference in late 1976 is explored, with attention to the ability of Robert Mugabe and Joshua Nkomo to take advantage of Kissinger's diplomacy. The next chapters look at attempts by the British, Zambians, and Nigerians to negotiate a transfer of power from Ian Smith to the PF. It would take another two years for the British to oversee a transfer of power to Mugabe's ZANU party in April 1980. The final two chapters examine the fallout between Mugabe and Nkomo in the early 1980s, arguing that obsessions with race and ethnic conflict in earlier negotiations enabled the Americans and British to provide Mugabe Cold War cover for state crimes committed against Nkomo's supporters in the Matabeleland and Midland provinces"--

Kurzfassung: From Eastern Europe to South Africa to the Arab Spring, nonviolent action has proven capable of overthrowing autocratic regimes and bringing about revolutionary political change. How do dissidents come to embrace a nonviolent strategy in the first place? Why do others rule it out in favor of taking up arms? Despite a new wave of attention to the effectiveness and global impact of nonviolent movements, our understanding of their origins and trajectories remains limited. Drawing on cases from Nepal, Syria, India and South Africa, as well as global cross-national data, this book details the processes through which challenger organizations come to embrace or reject civil resistance as a means of capturing state power. It develops a relational theory, showing how the social ties that underpin challenger organizations shape their ability and willingness to attempt regime change using nonviolent means alone.

In the midst of a devastating pandemic, one President was soundly defeated and another sworn in; the first one refused to accept the results of the election while the second calmly took the reins of a government that was struggling to cope with the pandemic and the resulting economic crisis. In the midst of all this, the country was shaken by an attempted coup and by an attendant riot.1 Although it may not turn out that this political and institutional shock "changed everything," it certainly marked the peak -or the nadir - of what will surely be remembered as a "critical juncture"2 in American history. But another "critical connection" that was exposed by the events of those two months was the enduring, but ever changing, and often overlooked juncture between political parties and social movements"--

Kurzfassung: This Element looks critically at migration scenarios proposed for the end of the Bronze Age in the eastern Mediterranean. After presenting some historical background to the development of migration studies, including types and definitions of migration as well as some of its possible material correlates, I consider how we go about studying human mobility and issues regarding 'ethnicity'. There follows a detailed and critical examination of the history of research related to migration and ethnicity in the southern Levant at the end of the Late Bronze Age (ca. 1200 BC), considering both migrationist and anti-migrationist views. I then present and critique recent studies on climatic and related issues, as well as the current state of evidence from palaeogenetics and strontium isotope analyses. The conclusion attempts to look anew at this enigmatic period of transformation and social change, of mobility and connectivity, alongside the hybridised practices of social actors.

Kurzfassung: The significance of the German philosopher and social thinker, Georg Simmel (1858-1918), is only now being recognised by intellectual historians. Through penetrating readings of Simmel's thought, taken as a series of reflections on the essence of modernity and modern civilisation, Efraim Podoksik places his ideas within the context of intellectual life in Germany, and especially Berlin, under the Kaiserreich. Modernity, characterised by the growing differentiation and fragmentation of culture and society, was a fundamental issue during Simmel's life, underpinning central intellectual debates in Imperial Germany. Simmel's thought is depicted here as an attempt at transforming the complexity of these debates into a coherent worldview that can serve as an effective guide to understanding their main parameters. Paying particular attention to the genealogy and usage of the concepts of Bildung, culture and civilisation in Germany, this study offers contextual analyses of Simmel's philosophies of culture, society, art, religion and the feminine, as well as his interpretations of Dante, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer, Goethe and Rembrandt.

Kurzfassung: Gone are the days when fathers were expected to put work first and family last. Today, men worldwide are redefining fatherhood and finding greater fulfillment both at work and at home. But old ways die hard. Many managers prefer the status quo, and fathers aren't finding the support and flexibility they need from their employers. Dads still feel pressure to downplay or hide their involvement in their children's lives. And even as more men step up as parents, across every level of society the burdens of parenting and running a household still fall unfairly on women. Fatherhood is one of the toughest jobs and the biggest responsibility you'll ever take on. Advice for Working Dads will teach you how to balance and integrate work and parenthood, how to navigate the common pitfalls at work, and how to find success when you're taking on twice as much-for the good of your family. This volume will help you: navigate workplaces and bosses that want you to forget you're a parent; spend your time at work and at home more purposefully; make time for yourself, your friends, and your hobbies; set reasonable expectations and limits in the always-on work culture; communicate better with your spouse or partner about careers, parenting, and housework; get the paternal leave you and your family need; set your family up for success; and more.

Kurzfassung: Too many companies are managed not by leaders but by mere role players and faceless bureaucrats. What would it take to replace these empty suits with real leaders-men and women who are confident in who they are and who truly inspire people to achieve extraordinary results? Rob Goffee and Gareth Jones argue that leaders don't become great by aspiring to a list of universal character traits. Rather, effective leaders are authentic: they deploy individual strengths to engage followers' hearts, minds, and souls. Authentic leaders are skillful at consistently being themselves, even as they alter their behavior to respond effectively to changing contexts. In short, the authors present a powerful case: that it takes "being yourself, in context, with skill" to be a successful, authentic leader-and they show you how to do exactly that. Goffee and Jones reveal how to hone and deploy your unique leadership assets while managing the inherent tensions at the heart of successful leadership: when to show emotion and when to withhold it, how to get close to followers while maintaining an appropriate role distance, and maintaining your individuality while "conforming enough" to gain traction and lead change. Underscoring the inherently social nature of leadership, the book also explores how leaders can stay attuned to the needs and expectations of followers.

Thoroughly revised and expanded, the book provides relevant updates on the professional and personal experiences of the investors since the first edition's publication. Complementing the original profiles are several new chapters featuring established value investors including Howard Marks, as well as rising personalities and fund managers such as Álvaro Guzmán de Lázaro and Fernando Bernad Marrase. Author Ronald Chan, founder of Hong Kong-based investment management Chartwell Capital Limited, highlights how and why the value investors have consistently beaten the stock market through the years.

Kurzfassung: We need imagination now more than ever-to find opportunities in adversity, rethink our businesses, and discover new paths to growth. Yet too many companies have lost their ability to imagine. What is this mysterious capacity? How does imagination work? And how can organizations keep it alive and harness it systematically? The Imagination Machine answers these questions and more. Drawing on the experience and insights of CEOs across several industries, as well as lessons from neuroscience, computer science, psychology, and philosophy, BCG's Martin Reeves and Jack Fuller provide a fascinating look into the mechanics of imagination and lay out a six-step process for creating ideas and bringing them to life. Imagination is one of the least understood but most crucial ingredients of business success. It's what makes the difference between an incremental change and the kinds of pivots and paradigm shifts that are essential to success-especially during a crisis. The Imagination Machine is the guide you need to demystify and operationalize this powerful human capacity, to inject new life into your company, and to head into unknown territory with the right tools by your side.

Kurzfassung: When it comes to a woman's day-to-day experience and her career trajectory, one key player has the most significant impact: her boss. If we really want to support women in the workplace, managers must step up. The good news is that many of the things you can do to be a better manager for women are easy. In The Good Boss, CEO and business consultant Kate Eberle Walker offers timely, tactical advice based on her experience coaching managers, as well as the lessons she learned working her own way up the corporate ladder. Eberle Walker outlines nine straightforward rules that any manager can follow to help the women on their team-whether they oversee one, one hundred, or one thousand employees. You'll learn: how to build stronger working relationships by being your authentic self; how she balances work and family, and what you can do to help; what to do (and what not to do) when a new mother returns to work; how to identify and deal with problematic comments and behaviors from her coworkers; and when is the right time to be a tough boss and how to navigate difficult conversations. Eberle Walker also shares insights from CEOs across a range of industries who use creative, forward-thinking methods to support women throughout an entire organization.

Kurzfassung: Today, the pace of change is so great that no company can afford to wait to respond to new developments. You need nimble and creative problem solving, and the most intelligent and efficient decision-making doesn't come from the top-it comes from your employees on the frontlines who interact with customers and have the ability to see and respond to the shifting landscape before anyone else. The leaders whose organizations are best able to innovate solutions, win customers, and boost profits during this era of rapid change will be the ones who realize that everyone-from the CEO down to the frontline employee-is a leader, capitalize on that knowledge, and use it to grow. In this book, Eric Strafel draws on twenty years of experience as a top executive at Fortune 500 companies to show you how to decentralize and democratize decision-making through every level of the workforce, while ensuring that the company stays aligned, that each employee understands the company's underlying purpose, and that everyone works toward the same goal. Learn how to: leverage frontline leadership to improve corporate agility; partner with customers and with frontline employees to maximize internal innovation; create a highly engaged, empowered, and energized workforce in every department; and equip the company to break through barriers, overcome plateaus, and scale.

Kurzfassung: In this practical and research-based guide for sales managers, Harvard Business School professor Frank Cespedes offers essential strategies for thriving in an industry that never stops changing. The rise of e-commerce. Big data. AI. Given these trends (and many others), there's no doubt that sales is changing. But much of the current conventional wisdom is misleading and not supported by empirical data. If you as a manager fail to separate fact from hype, you will make decisions based on faulty assumptions and, in a competitive market, eventually fall behind those with a keener grasp of the current selling environment. In this book, Cespedes provides sales managers and executives with the tools they need to separate the signal from the noise. These include how to: hire the right talent-not just stars; pay and properly incentivize your sales force; improve ROI from your training programs; create a comprehensive sales model that aligns with your strategy; set the right prices; and build and manage a multichannel approach. Chock-full of examples, research, guidelines, and diagnostics, Sales Management That Works is the book you need to build a great sales team, create an optimal strategy, and steer clear of hype and fads.

Kurzfassung: In Bring Your Human to Work, Erica Keswin laid down the rules and protocols of a human workplace. Now, in Rituals Roadmap, she shows us how to further employee engagement, explaining that workplace rituals foster a sense of belonging and help workers connect with one another and their work. From our morning cup of coffee to the standing Wednesday morning meeting with our team, our lives are steeped in rituals. Rituals Roadmap combines cutting-edge scientific research with examples from the most human companies, like Starbucks, Microsoft, Chipotle and LinkedIn, showing how they establish rituals during meetings, employee onboarding procedures, and daily interactions among coworkers. Whether you choose to pass around a stuffed penguin at your weekly meeting to express gratitude like Aria Finger of DoSomething, or decide to make lunchtime a daily ritual with your team in the same way one top performing team at Douglas Elliman does, rituals create community and change us in a way that conjures lifelong commitments. If you're serious about employee engagement, Rituals Roadmap is your blueprint for creating a workplace full of engaged, connected employees who drive revenue and stay at their jobs long term.

Kurzfassung: From bestselling author and mental toughness expert Jason Selk comes a mind-training regimen for reframing every problem into an opportunity for productive action. The one characteristic all phenomenally successful people share is mental toughness. Mentally tough people are better at making decisions more quickly and with better results. They possess the uncanny ability to control what goes on between their ears. Instead of allowing their minds to focus on their problems when adversity strikes, the most successful people have learned to direct their thoughts in a systematic manner that produces positive emotions and productive actions: they have a Relentless Solution Focus. In this book, top performance coach Dr. Jason Selk-former director of mental training for the World Series champions St. Louis Cardinals-and his colleague Dr. Ellen Reed provide the insight, tools, and proven step-by-step framework for you to do the same. When you have Relentless Solution Focus, you think better. Your decisions garner positive results. You take action and follow through-every time. And when you do get off track, you get back on with less effort and less drama. Weakness shrinks and strength grows, creating confidence and momentum, taking you and your team to higher levels of performance and achievement.

Kurzfassung: According to social scientist and award-winning CEO Dr. Mary Donohue, we communicate ineffectively at work a staggering 80% of the time! From the tone of an email to the almost-but-not-quite eye contact of a video conference app, today's tech has increased the speed and scope of our communications-as well as the opportunities to misunderstand each other completely. This lack of effective communication is a leading cause of workplace stress. In this widely anticipated and deeply researched book, Dr. Donohue, a victim of workplace stress herself, lays out a seven-step solution to give you the tools you need to make communication a cure for workplace stress, not a cause-even (especially) when you're working with a generationally diverse team. Discover what's at the root of the problem-from misunderstood emails and misinterpreted texts to misconstrued social media posts and missed social cues on Zoom-and learn how to respond to different communication preferences now. Through case studies, evidence-backed research, and more, you'll walk away with the tools you need to ensure everyone on your team-yourself included-is heard and understood, so there's less time clarifying and more time for everyone to be their best, most productive selves.

Kurzfassung: As a champion for nonprofit leaders hell bent on maximizing the impact of the nonprofit sector, Joan wrote this second edition of Joan Garry's Guide to Nonprofit Leadership during COVID lockdown. She knew that board and staff leaders would need a guide come January 2021 to navigate a world where old rules no longer apply and a world that needs them now more than ever. A very different time demanded a very different book. Certainly not different in style, Joan's new book is funny, inspiring, and filled with practical advice. Her voice is accessible and you'll feel you are getting a pep talk from your biggest fan. Drawing on her own experiences as a nonprofit E.D., a board leader, a volunteer, and a donor, Joan shares her stories and introduces you to a host of new characters she has met since 2017. Board and staff leaders will see themselves in these folks-recognizing the mistakes and celebrating the successes. In this new book, Joan will help you realize that "nonprofits are messy"-too many cooks, too few resources, and an abundance of passion-and show you the way to find joy and privilege in that "mess."

Kurzfassung: A small but growing group of today's knowledge workers actively seek a lifestyle of freedom, using technology to perform their jobs, traveling far and wide, and moving as often as they like. These digital nomads have left their local coffee shops behind and now proudly post their "office of the day" photos from exotic locales, but what do their lives really look like? In Digital Nomads, Rachael Woldoff and Robert Litchfield take listeners into an expatriate digital nomad community in Bali, Indonesia, to better understand this growing demographic of typically Millennial workers. Woldoff and Litchfield present new answers to classic questions about community, creativity, and work. They further show why digital nomads leave their conventional lives behind, arguing that creative class and Millennial workers, though successful, often feel that their "world class cities" and desirable jobs are anything but paradise. They first follow their transitions into freelancing, entrepreneurship, and remote work, then explain how digital nomads create a a fluid but intimate community abroad in the company of like-minded others. Ultimately, Woldoff and Litchfield provide insight into digital nomads' efforts to live and work in ways that balance freedom, community, and creative fulfillment in the digital age.

In today's complex digital landscape, business decisions and cyber event responses have implications for information security that high-level actors may be unable to foresee. What we need is a cybersecurity command center capable of delivering, not just data, but concise, meaningful interpretations that allow us to make informed decisions. Building, buying, or outsourcing a CI-DR program is the answer. In his work with executives at leading financial organizations and with the US military, author Richard O. Moore III has tested and proven this next-level approach to Intelligence and Risk. This book is a guide to: building, buying, or outsourcing a cyber intelligence-driven risk program; understanding the functional capabilities needed to sustain the program; using cyber intelligence to support Enterprise Risk Management; reducing loss from cyber events by building new organizational capacities; and supporting mergers and acquisitions with predictive analytics.

Kurzfassung: A personal growth roadmap guiding you into the future of relationships in work, life, play, and giving Curve Benders is a personal growth roadmap. It will guide you through the complicated intersection of work, life, play, and giving. Countless new forces will shape the future, so the strategic relationships we form in these areas of life are, of necessity, changing. This book will show you how to move into the future and dramatically alter your growth trajectory in both its direction and ultimate destination. David Nour, the author of Relationship Economics and a top thought leader on business relationships, has identified fifteen forces that will heavily influence what we do and how and where we engage our current and prospective relationships to create value and make a difference in the lives of others. This book aims to provide you with a step-by-step guide for personal, professional, and organizational growth. The author highlights how certain relationships enable a non-linear growth trajectory. These relationships, in addition to augmenting what we can accomplish, often shape who we become. These relationships are "curve benders," and this book will show you who and where they are, how to find and engage them, and, equally valuable, how you can become a curve bender to impact the lives and livelihoods of others profoundly.

Kurzfassung: There's never been more discussion around diversity and inclusion in the workplace. From gender pay gaps to the #MeToo movement, it seems that every organization has finally recognized that change needs to happen. Despite this, true progress towards more inclusive workspaces has been excruciatingly slow and, in some cases, has grinded to a halt. Following extensive research and interviews at over 200 international businesses, Kathryn Jacob, Sue Unerman, and Mark Edwards have discovered the major problem that is holding back the move towards greater diversity: where are all the men? Most men are not engaged with D&I initiatives in the workplace-at one extreme they may be feeling actively hostile and threatened by the changing cultural landscape. But others may be unmotivated to change-recognizing the abstract benefits of diversity but not realizing what's in it for them. Built upon this seemingly counterintuitive approach of bringing men into the conversation, Belonging is an accessible and comprehensive guide to achieving diversity that lasts.

Kurzfassung: Advocate to Win shares how you can use the tools of a trial attorney to ask for what you want-and get it. Publishers Weekly called Heather Hansen's first book, The Elegant Warrior, a "template for achieving personal and career goals." In Advocate to Win, Heather goes deeper. As an award-winning trial attorney, Heather quickly realized that she didn't win because she was an extraordinary advocate. She won because she gave her clients the tools to advocate for themselves. First, they needed to choose what they wanted. Next, they needed to believe in themselves and their ability to get it. And then, they could advocate to win. Heather created a system to help her clients make the best choices for themselves, for the case, and for their wins. She gave them the tools to believe. And then she gave them specific strategies to advocate for what they wanted and to win with ease. Now, she will do the same for you.

Kurzfassung: Your voice as biometric data, and how marketers are using it to manipulate you The first in-depth examination of the voice intelligence industry, The Voice Catchers exposes how artificial intelligence is enabling personalized marketing and discrimination through voice analysis. Amazon and Google have numerous patents pertaining to voice profiling, and even now their smart speakers are extracting and using voice prints for identification and more. Customer service centers are already approaching every caller based on what they conclude a caller's voice reveals about that person's emotions, sentiments, and personality, often in real time. In fact, many scientists believe that a person's weight, height, age, and race, not to mention any illnesses they may have, can also be identified from the sound of that individual's voice. Ultimately not only marketers, but also politicians and governments, may use voice profiling to infer personal characteristics for selfish interests and not for the benefit of a citizen or of society as a whole. Leading communications scholar Joseph Turow places the voice intelligence industry in historical perspective, explores its contemporary developments, and offers a clarion call for regulating this rising surveillance regime.

Kurzfassung: The Psychology of Advertising offers a comprehensive exploration of theory and research in (consumer) psychology on how advertising impacts the thoughts, emotions, and actions of consumers. It links psychological theories and empirical research findings to real-life industry examples, showing how scientific research can inform marketing practice. Advertising is a ubiquitous and powerful force, seducing us into buying wanted and sometimes unwanted products and services, donating to charitable causes, voting for political candidates, and changing our health-related lifestyles for better or worse. This revised and fully updated third edition of The Psychology of Advertising offers a comprehensive and state-of-the art overview of psychological theorizing and research on the impact of online and offline advertising and discusses how the traces consumers leave on the Internet (their digital footprint) guides marketers in micro-targeting their advertisements. The new edition also includes new coverage of big data, privacy, personalization, and materialism, and engages with the issue of the replication crisis in psychology, and what that means in relation to studies in the book.
