    Abstract: "This book examines the contributions of seventeenth and eighteenth-century French women philosophers and intellectuals to moralist writing. Moralist writing, a distinctively French genre, draws on philosophical and literary traditions extending back to classical antiquity. Closely connected to salon culture and influenced by Augustinianism, it engages social and political questions, epistemology, moral psychology, and virtue ethics. The first half of the book analyses women's use of moralist forms such as the essay, maxim, and "character" or portrait to explore classical topics: self-knowledge and knowledge of the self, the ethics and obligations of friendship, the relation of the passions to happiness. The second half focuses on topics that relate directly to women's lifeworld: the critique of the institution of marriage, the status of older women, and the question of women's nature and capabilities. Each chapter traces the evolution of women's moralist thought from the late seventeenth century to the Enlightenment and the decades immediately following the French Revolution, a period of tremendous change in the horizon of possibilities for women as public figures and intellectuals"--

Through a diachronic analysis informed by corpus linguistics and feminist theory, Tranchese examines how rape discourse has (or has not) changed over the past decade. With its detailed investigation of media representations, the book explores how age-old myths about sexual violence re-emerge in different forms within news narratives. Against the backdrop of twelve years of newspaper coverage of rape, including many high-profile cases, this study also traces the rise of “celebrity culture”, the emergence of #metoo, and the development of the backlash against it. The author places these historical events and recent trends within broader debates on feminism and the role played by (social) media in shaping contemporary rape discourse. This book provides a much-needed linguistic analysis which will be of particular interest to scholars and students of feminist studies, language and gender, corpus-assisted discourse studies, and gendered crime. Alessia Tranchese is Senior Lecturer in Communication and Applied Linguistics at the University of Portsmouth, UK. Aus intersektional-feministischer und post- sowie dekolonialer Perspektive erforscht sie aktuelle Romane aus Mexiko, Brasilien und Südafrika, um die tragende, aber in der Textstruktur verborgene Stimme der vergewaltigten Informantin zu enthüllen. Ihre Analysen zeigen Interaktionen zwischen Schweigen und Sprechen auf und plädieren für eine kritische Lektüre von Repräsentationen sexualisierter Gewalt und Trauma.

    Abstract: Since its beginnings in Paris in the mid-19th century, the idea of bohemia, an urban community of artists and intellectuals living outside bourgeois norms, has been a potent trope of artistic identity. It was here that the notion of an unconventional, free-spirited life, precarious yet filled with idealism, was codified and romanticized. Bohemia: History of an Idea, 1950 – 2000 shows the continuities and differences between the scenes and subcultures of the second half of the twentieth century, when the mainstream began to appropriate and thereby erode a way of life predicated on its rejection. Nonetheless, as an alternative to conformity the bohemian idea has exerted an enduring fascination. Through works by 39 artists, including Alice Neel, PeterHujar, John Deakin, David Wojnarowicz, Ed van der Elsken, Robert Frank and Alfred Leslie, William Gedney, Libuše Jarcovjáková, Nan Goldin, Zhang Huan and Wolfgang Tillmans, the publication explores the diversity of expressions in various cities in Europe, North America and Asia and shows that the bohemian idea continues to galvanize and inspire

    Abstract: Die Max-Planck-Gesellschaft (MPG), eine der erfolgreichsten Forschungsinstitutionen weltweit, steht exemplarisch für das stark von Hierarchien und Abhängigkeitsverhältnissen geprägte deutsche Wissenschaftssystem. Die Studie analysiert ihren soziokulturellen und strukturellen Wandlungsprozess unter Genderaspekten in den ersten fünfzig Jahren ihres Bestehens – von intransparenten Wirkungszusammenhängen informeller Netzwerke hin zu einer modernen, an Gleichstellungspolitik orientierten Forschungsinstitution. Dabei werden zwei weibliche Arbeitswelten in der Forschungsgesellschaft kultur- und wissenschaftshistorisch untersucht: die Wissenschaft, zu der lange Zeit nur sehr wenige Frauen Zugang hatten, und das "Vorzimmer", in dem die meisten Frauen gearbeitet haben. Was hat weibliche Wissenschaftskarrieren in der MPG befördert, was behindert und welche Rolle spielte dabei das "Harnack-Prinzip", das MPG-eigene Strukturprinzip der persönlichkeitszentrierten Forschungsorganisation? Ein weiterer Fokus liegt auf den gleichstellungspolitischen Aushandlungsprozessen, die Ende der 1980er begannen und dazu beigetragen haben, die tradierte Geschlechterordnung der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft aufzubrechen und dort einen Kulturwandel herbeizuführen.

    Abstract: Zygmunt Bauman is known internationally as the sociologist of postmodernity and 'liquid' society. But he was also a serious photographer. This book presents a selection of his black-and-white photographs, together with a range of essays by colleagues, friends and family about his work with images. The book features a mixture of short pieces on individual photographs and longer essays addressing aspects of Bauman's photography and the life and work of his wife, Janina. These include an essay of Bauman's from 1989, in which he considers Monika Krajewska's photographs of abandoned Jewish graveyards in Poland. Also reprinted is an essay by Bauman's daughter Lydia, taken from the catalogue of an exhibition of the photographs in 2010, and an essay by Keith Tester about Bauman's interest in film. Jack Palmer discusses the relationship between Bauman's sociology and his photography, while Peter Beilharz, Janet Wolff, and Antony Bryant and Griselda Pollock offer personal reflections on some of Bauman's photographs. The book concludes with an essay by Karl Dudman, one of the Baumans' grandchildren, based on a series of photographs he took in the family home shortly after his grandfather's death. Janina Bauman appears in a number of ways in the book. Some of the photographs are of her, and several of the short essays discuss her place in Zygmunt's life and work. Izabela Wagner, biographer of Zygmunt Bauman, presents new material on Janina's work in the Polish film industry in the post-war period

Erste Untersuchungen waren der Gestaltung von Titelseiten, medienspezifischen Werbeanzeigen oder beteiligten Akteuren gewidmet. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes nähern sich dieser Thematik an und ergänzen bisherige Ergebnisse mit neuen Aspekten. Neben Überlegungen zu Brüchen und Kontinuitäten bei der visuellen Konstruktion von Periodika, die an Vorgängerzeitschriften in den Herkunftsgebieten anknüpften, werden Bildmotive, Bild-Text-Bezüge und unterschiedliche Deutungskontexte bei Kunstwerken und Fotografien diskutiert. Weitere Beiträge erörtern ausgewählte Gesichtspunkte der Geschichte der Fotografie in den Ländern der Böhmischen Krone und der Bildmotive in der Amateurfotografie vor 1945 sowie die Reproduktion solcher Aufnahmen in Heimatzeitschriften nach 1945. Auch Fragen der frühen fotografischen Reportage in den 1950er-Jahren und des fotografischen Blickes von Heimatreisenden werden beleuchtet. Ein Bericht über die Neuerungen des Online-Handbuchs Heimatpresse sowie der Fotografen- und Künstlerdatenbank schließt den Sammelband ab.     Abstract: Die Vergangenheit ist unbeobachtbar. Was wir von ihr wissen oder uns vorstellen, haben wir nicht zuletzt durch Bilder erfahren: Historiengemälde, Fotografien, Filme, digitale Reanimationen. Der Kunsthistoriker Peter Geimer fragt, was Bilder zu visuellen Zeugnissen macht und wie sie Geschichte Gestalt verleihen. Dabei zeigt sich, dass Bilder nicht einfach historische Sachverhalte illustrieren, sondern selbst Erscheinungsformen der Geschichte sind. Obwohl Sprache traditionell als Leitmedium des Historischen gilt, beruht unsere Vorstellung des Vergangenen maßgeblich auch auf Bildern. Wie Schriftquellen, so rekonstruieren Bilder Geschichte aber nur bruchstückhaft - sie bilden Fragmente auf der Suche nach der verlorenen Zeit. Das vorliegende Buch stellt vielfältige Erscheinungsweisen visueller Rekonstruktion in den Medien Malerei, Fotografie und Film vor. Die Zusammenschau zeigt, dass diese diversen Formen der Vergegenwärtigung - vom detailgenau rekonstruierenden Historienbild des 19. Jahrhunderts über das dokumentarische Foto bis zum "reenactment" im zeitgenössischen Video - sehr unterschiedliche Möglichkeiten der Imagination des Vergangenen darstellen. Drawing on her collection of over 5,000 TV snapshots, Spigel shows that people did not just watch TV: women used the TV set as a backdrop for fashion and glamour poses; people dressed in drag in front of the screen; and, in pinup poses, people even turned the TV setting into a space for erotic display. While the TV industry promoted on-screen images of white nuclear families in suburban homes, the snapshots depict a broad range of people across racial, ethnic, and class backgrounds that do not always conform to the reigning middle-class nuclear family ideal.     Abstract: "A Picture Gallery of the Soul presents the work of more than one hundred Black American artists whose practice incorporates the photographic medium. Organized by the Katherine E. Nash Gallery at the University of Minnesota, this group exhibition samples a range of photographic expressions produced over three centuries, from traditional photography to mixed media and conceptual art. From the daguerreotypes made by Jules Lion in New Orleans in 1840 to the Instagram post of the Baltimore Uprising made by Devin Allen in 2015, photography has chronicled Black American life, and Black Americans have defined the possibilities of photography. Frederick Douglass recognized the quick, easy, and inexpensive reproducibility of photography and developed a theoretical framework for understanding its impact on public discourse, which he delivered as a series of four lectures during the Civil War. The subject of 160 photographic portraits and the most photographed American of the nineteenth century, Douglass anticipated that the history of American photography and the history of Black American culture and politics would be deeply intertwined. A Picture Gallery of the Soul honors the diverse visions of Blackness made manifest through the lens of photography. Published in association with the Katherine E. Nash Gallery. Cook, Torkwase Dyson, Theaster Gates Jr., Allison Janae Hamilton, Leslie Hewitt, Steffani Jemison, Robert Pruitt, Jamea Richmond-Edwards, and Carrie Mae Weems. The artists investigate their connections to the Deep South through familial stories of perseverance, self-determination, and self-reliance and consider how this history informs their working practices.     Abstract: "Wake Up, This Is Joburg is a collaboration between photographer Mark Lewis and writer Tanya Zack. Originally published from 2014-2019 as ten separate photobooks by Fourthwall Books in South Africa, the collection builds a portrait of Johannesburg through individual stories and accompanying photographs. Ranging from butchers removing meat from cow heads in a parking garage meat market to underground gold miners hauling rock by hand from abandoned shafts under the city, these stories contribute to ethnographic studies of the city by showing the lived experience of its residents. At its heart, this project investigates how people are improvising to repurpose land and buildings, especially in Johannesburg's inner city. It brings attention to a vast informal economy, as well as widespread reconstruction as crumbling buildings are occupied, burned, stripped of parts, and rebuilt to serve the needs of the residents."

    Abstract: "In the same magazines where women are urged to be free and to have careers of their own, one can also spot advice about the best ways to be an obliging wife and a perfect mother. Literature, film, TV, and the news depict and glorify a specific, sometimes voluntary, sort of female submissiveness that can be a source of pleasure or satisfaction for even the most independent feminist. But this female submissiveness has scarcely warranted attention in philosophy or feminist thought. From a feminist point of view, imagining that women might, in one way or the other choose to try out such submissiveness comes off as anti-feminist or even misogynistic. But are these submissive desires and pleasures at odds with the feminist's independence? In We Are Not Born Submissive, Garcia explains that the feminist agenda has many components but there are (at least) two of which are at the fore: shedding light on the oppression of women qua women, and fighting against this oppression.
    Abstract: Studying female submissiveness, therefore, is a feminist undertaking in that it consists of hearing and taking seriously women's experience, of not presuming that they are victims, passive, or perverted. Garcia maintains it is not only possible, but necessary to study female submissiveness without presupposing anything, typically or naturally feminine or anti-feminist in this submissiveness. Using the theoretical framework of philosopher, Simone de Beauvoir and others, Garcia theorizes this fascinating dynamic in its full complexity. By looking at male dominance not from the point of view of those who dominate but from those who submit, Garcia avoids describing the exterior, objective subordination of women. Instead, she is able to examine what exactly it means to be a woman under male dominance, thereby describing the subjective experience beneath domination.
