    Abstract: Eine Variante der in Bad Aussee üblichen Faschingsbriefe (vgl. Film E 2756) stellt das am Faschingssonntag 1979 im Hotel "Stadt Wien" aufgenommene "Ausseer Wandertheater" dar. Es weist Züge des Wiener Kabaretts auf und will vor allem die Bürger des Marktes ansprechen. Der Film enthält neben Eingangs- und Schlußlied drei der insgesamt sechs Nummern des Programms.
    Abstract: A variant of the usual "Faschingbriefe" at Bad Aussee is the "Ausseer Wandertheater" shot on Shrove sunday 1979 at the hotel "Stadt Wien". It contains features of the Viennese cabaret and is intended to address primarily the citizens of Bad Aussee. The film shows besides the songs at beginning and end three out of the six sketches of the program.

    Abstract: The decorated symbol of the market-privileges, the "Freiung", a wooden arm holding a clean sword on a 4.6 meters high post is carried round the village headed by the "Wegauskehrer" and accompanied by the people of rank and a brass band and is then set amidst the market.

    Abstract: One week before Ash Wednesday, Shrovetide is proclaimed out of a waggon in various places of the town of Wolfach. After the "Eleven o'clock Mass" on the following "Dirty Thursday" pretzels are distributed to the children. The procession of the coffee-party tabbies takes place in the afternoon of the same day. Shrovetide proper is opened on Shrove Monday by the so-called "Well-awake", a historical custom meant to wake up the fools. The big Shrove Monday procession in the afternoon is followed by the Shrovetide play about the abduction and the liberation of the gipsy princess. On Shrove Thuesday, the children have a procession of their own during which the Pretzel Fool is carried along. Towards the evening, the Procession of the Noses is passing through the streets; women disguised as males that have been practicipating are plunged into the fountain. Shrovetide ends on Ash Wednesday when the fool break into lamentations at the Wailing Wall and are then going to wash their money-bags in the fountain.

    Abstract: Die aus neun Männern bestehende zwanglose Gruppe der "Reiterer" - so genannt nach der "Reitern" (Gemeinde Bad Aussee), wo ihr Leiter wohnt - trägt fast jedes Jahr am Faschingsmontag in mehreren Lokalen im Raum Aussee einen selbstverfaßten, gesprochenen und gesungenen Faschingsbrief vor. In der Themenwahl und im Darstellungsstil strebt diese Gruppe eine typisch "ländliche" Wirkung an. Das vorliegende Filmdokument, das außer 6 Sketches auch Einzug, Begrüßung und Verabschiedung enthält, wurde am Faschingsmontag 1978 im Gasthaus "Steirerhof" in Bad Aussee aufgenommen.
    Abstract: The "Reiterer" an informal group so called after the living place of four members "Reitern" (community of Bad Aussee), sing nearly every year on shrove monday a "Faschingbrief". By means of choice of the topics of their criticism and of their style of acting they strive after achieving a "rural" effect. The film shows selling of leaflets, in the Aussee regions as well called "Faschingbrief", six sung sketches and the stay of the Faschingbrief singers at "Steirerhof" after their scene.

    Abstract: The cooper Josef Schölzhorn from Eisacktal shows the manufacture of a 100-litre wine cask by hand. Chestnut boards are cut and shaped with the jointer into staves. The staves are arranged upright in a few hoops and drawn together over the fire by means of a rope. The bottoms are measured with compasses and inserted, further hoops are put in place, and finally the bung-hole and tap-hole are bored.

    Abstract: Für das Waldbauernmuseum Gutenstein bauen drei Zimmerleute als Ersatz für das 50 Jahre alte Wasserrad eines Sägewerkes ein neues von fast 4 m Durchmesser. Schwarzföhren- und Lärchenholz wird teils mit althergebrachtem Werkzeug, teils mit Maschinen bearbeitet.
    Abstract: To replace a fifty year old water wheel of a sawmill three carpenters build a new one, nearly 4 meters in diameter, for the "Waldbauernmuseum" (Museum for the culture of forest farmers). The wood of pine and larche is worked on partly by traditional tools partly by machines.

    Abstract: Im Spätherbst wird aus den eingelagerten Honigkörben Heidehonig geerntet. Die Waben werden zerteilt. Sie liefern Scheibenhonig, der abgewogen und eingepackt wird, Wachsstücke (für die Wachsgewinnung) und Honigzellen ohne Deckel. Aus letzteren wird in einer hölzernen Gewindepresse ("Stader Presse") Preßhonig gewonnen; er wird gereinigt und abgefüllt.
    Abstract: In late autumn heather honey is harvested from the skeps stored in the farmstead. The combs are divided. Comb honey is cut, weighed, and packed. Pieces of wax are removed and collected for wax processing. From unsealed honey cells honey is extracted with a wooden Stade-type screw press. The pressed honey is cleared and filled in cans and jars.

    Abstract: Im Innerberger Stadel in Steyr, Oberösterreich, spielt alljährlich das "Steyrer Kripperl". Dieses um eine Weihnachtskrippe gruppierte Puppentheater mit mechanischen Komponenten besteht in der Hauptsache aus mit Stabpuppen gespielten Szenen burlesken Inhalts, vielfigurigen "Aufzügen", die Biblisches oder Brauchtümliches wiedergeben, und aus Handwerkerfiguren, die - mechanisch bewegt - ihre spezifischen Arbeiten vorführen. Auswahl von neun aus den insgesamt dreißig überlieferten Szenen.
    Abstract: In the "Innerberger Stadel", an antic barn of the old Iron Trading Company in Steyr, Upper Austria, every year since 1922 the "Steyrer Kripperl", the last Christmas crib theatre of Austria still alive today, plays from Advent to Candlemas. This puppet theatre with roots back to the 18th century is arranged upon a stage round a Christmas crib with mechanical elements. It is connected only loosly with the biblical traditional Christmas happening and consists mainly of scenes with burlesque contents, which are performed with marionettes, then of multifigured "acts", which describe biblical or traditional folk stories and at last of groups of workmen, who perform their specific working methods animated mechanically. The film shows a selection of nine from a total of 30 traditional scenes.

    Abstract: A lace-maker from Egerland is working on a lace pillow in horizontal-cylinder form with eight to twenty bobbins. She is showing as well basic patterns of this handicraft as specific elements of her own country of origin: lace, pattern, hand movements, how to work, and execution. The following samples so called tape laces (Bändchen) in two kinds of cross or twist (Halbschlag or Netzschlag), two whole stitches (Ganzschlag) and whole stitch (Leinenschlag), whole stitch and trellis stitch (Gitterschlag), also trellis stitch, small lace tapes with the elements of spider and oval leaf stitch (ovaler Formschlag).     Abstract: Auf der offenen Feuerstelle in einer Almhütte erhitzt die Bäuerin Milch in einem großen Kupferkessel, der an einem Schwenkarm hängt. Durch Zugabe von Labpulver und Salz wird die Milch zum Gerinnen gebracht. Nach Abschöpfen des Käsewassers wird die Käsemasse in eine Holzform gefüllt, festgedrückt und mit Steinen beschwert. Bevor die überstehenden Ränder des fertigen Käses abgeschnitten werden, wird er mit Salz eingerieben.
    Abstract: On an Alpine farm in St. Magdalena (South Tyrol) the farmer's wife makes cheese: She pours milk into a large copper vessel hanging on a turning arm over the hearth and heats it. As rennet she uses a powder mixed water and a pinch of salt. She stirs the milk continuously and watches the temperature. At 40-50°C she adds two thirds of the rennet and reduces the heat. After a certain time she breaks the curdled milk with a whisk and adds the remaining rennet. Finally she skims the whey and packs the curd into the mould, placing on the lid stones to press the cheese. - Salt is rubbed into the surfaces of the shaped young cheese, overlapping edges are cut, and the cheese is stored in a cheese-room.

She is showing as well basic patterns of this handicraft as specific elements of her own country of origin: lace, pattern, hand movements, how to work, and execution. The lace-maker makes lace grounds separated from usual motives: rose ground (Rosengrund), in loose and rigid form, virgin ground (Jungfrauengrund), and plait-ground (Flechtgrund).     Abstract: Eine alte Egerländerin klöppelt eine kleine, runde Spitzendecke. Dabei werden verschiedene Musterelemente wie Formschlag, Leinenschlagbändchen und Fleckchen miteinander kombiniert. Die Zwischenflächen werden mit vierteiligen Flechten und Rosengrund ausgefüllt. Mit Zeitdehnung.
    Abstract: A lace-maker from Egerland is working on a lace pillow in horizontal-cylinder form with eight to twenty bobbins. She is showing as well basic patterns of this handicraft as specific elements of her own country of origin: lace, pattern, hand movements, how to work, and execution. After short preparatory work the lace-maker makes a small round lace mat. Different elements: leaf stitch (Formschlag), whole stitch (Leinenschlag), and little spots (Fleckchen), executed in three stages of working, are combined, the spaces between the designs are filled with plaiting (Flechten) and rose ground (Rosengrund).     Abstract: At Monno (Alta Valcamonica, Brescia Province) a woman cuts from worn clothes strips for the weft, warps the threads of two colours on the warper, attaches the warp to the two-shaft treadle loom, and weaves rugs (Pezzotto) with striped and rhombic patterns.     Abstract: Eine Schaffarm im Glen Esk im östlichen Hochland. Vor der Schur (Juli) werden die diesjährigen Lämmer von den Alttieren getrennt und einem Desinfektionstauchbad gegen Parasiten unterworfen. Die Alttiere werden mit elektrischen Scherapparaten, einige auch mit Handscheren geschoren. Die Vliese werden zusammengerollt und verpackt. Bei der herbstlichen Auktion in Edzell werden überzählige Tiere versteigert.
    Abstract: Before shearing, done with electric devices and hand shears, the lambs are separated from the flock. The lambs are not yet shorn but dipped in a disinfectant, parasiticidal liquid prescribed by law. For the auction, held in autumn, the sheep for sale are loaded on special trucks and transported from the pasture to the public sale.

    Abstract: Eine Schaffarm im Glen Esk im östlichen Hochland. In der Lammzeit (April/Mai) werden die Herden vom Schäfer besonders intensiv betreut. Er muß Geburtshilfe leisten, den Ernährungszustand der Lämmer überprüfen, verwaiste und verlassene Lämmer anderen Muttertieren unterschieben und unterkühlte Neugeborene im Haus wärmen und künstlich ernähren.
    Abstract: During the ewing-period the shepherd has to take especially care of the flocks. He has to assist the ewes in ewing, to control the feeding of the lambs, and to switch orphaned and abandoned lambs to ewes that have lost their lamb. This is still done by the traditional method of skinning: The dead lamb's skin is slipped on the abandoned lamb to deceive the mother ewe. At this time the shepherd must also warm newly-born, supercooled lambs inside the house and feed them artificially.

    Abstract: Wegen unwegsamen Geländes kann die Halmfrucht vom Brandacker nicht heimgeführt, sondern muß eingetragen werden. Diese als "Korntragen" bezeichnete Tätigkeit hat einen speziellen Ernteschlußbrauch hervorgebracht mit den Brauchelementen Mahl, Tanz und Maske. Den Höhepunkt des festlichen Abends bildet der Auftritt eines Maskentieres ("Habergeiß").
    Abstract: Because of the rugged mountain country the harvested grain cannot be pulled home by carts, but must be carried by man power. This activity is called "Korntragen" ("carrying the grain"). Furthermore, it is accompanied by a peculiar harvest ritual with such specific ceremonial features as common meal, dances and the appearance of masked mythological beings. The culmination of this nocturnal feast is marked by the appearance of the "Habergeiß" (two persons carrying a goats' mask and other elements of this mythological animal).

The film shows construction and tending of the pile during the carbonization process as well as the final reaming and clearing out of the pile.

    Abstract: In seiner alten, wassergetriebenen Hammerschmiede (mit oberschlächtigem Wasserrad) in Bienno (Provinz Brescia) stellt der 47jährige Schmied Comensoli mit einem Gehilfen am Tag etwa 80 Spaten aus Alteisen in Serienproduktion her. Zum Formen benutzen sie einen preßluft- und einen wassergetriebenen Fallhammer. Die endgültige Form (nach Verkaufsgebiet verschieden) entsteht durch Pressen, Stanzen und Schleifen. Anschließend werden die Spaten gebündelt.
    Abstract: At his old water-driven hammer forge (overshot water wheel) at Bienno (Brescia Province) the 47-year-old smith Comensoli makes with his assistant spades from scrap-iron. They produce in series 80 spades per day. The iron is moulded by a compressed air hammer and by a drop hammer driven by water power. The final shaping (varying according to the selling territory) is is done by pressing, punching, and grinding. The finished spades are tied in bundles for delivery.

    Abstract: Scheich Hajdar Murteza erklärt dem Besucher einiges zu seinem Lebenslauf und zur Geschichte des Tekye. Anschließend erläutert er die Räumlichkeiten: Grablege mit Sarkophagen, Grabmäler im Garten, Kultraum mit Kultgegenständen. Als Ersatz für einen Zikr führt der Scheich im Ornat die Verwendung der einzelnen Gegenstände während des Zikr vor.
    Abstract: Sheik Hajdar Murteza guides the visitor through his cloister (tekye) and offers some comments. Next he describes his own life and the history of the Tekye. Then he shows the various rooms: the internment room with the sarcophagi of Rufâ'îye Sheiks, the tombstones in the garden, and, finally, the sanctuary (semâ'-châne)and the various relics found there (weapon, staffs). As a substitute for a Zikr the Sheik, dressed in his vestments, demonstrates how the various ritual items are used in the Zikr.

    Abstract: The communal prayer at the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting, is more festive than a normal Friday prayer. It is embellished with various formalized speeches and songs, which are the background for related recitations by the precensor (imam), muezzin (mü'ezzin = chanter of the call to prayer), and the congregatin. The individual parts of the ritual are indicated by the alternation of the recitations between the imam and the muezzin, and the imam's changing his position appropriately. The imam leads the prayer (rek'a) from in front of the prayer niche (mihrab), but the recitations are performed from the two pulpits.

    Abstract: Albanische Frauen führen das Tepsije-Singen, den "Kupferschüsselgesang", vor. Dabei wird von einer Frau eine Kupferschüssel, etwa senkrecht stehend, auf einem niedrigen Tisch gedreht, wodurch Klänge erzeugt werden. Die Frauen singen dazu.
    Abstract: Albanian women perform the Tepsije song, the "copper vessel song". A copper vessel is put up in a vertical position and turned by a woman to produce sounds. To the accompaniment of the vessel the women sing.

    Abstract: In the center of Bad Aussee appear in the afternoon of Shrove tuesday among other masked persons the "Pleß". These are youths dressed in old, worn clothes, carrying sticks with rags tied on to them. They dip these rags in puddles and run after other young people with them, who in their turn throw snowballs and pieces of ice, shouting "Pleß, Pleß". Therefore the "Pleß" have protected their heads with "helmets", consisting of beehive, boothheads or washing powder boxes.

    Abstract: Interview mit Scheich Baba Kâzim in albanischer Sprache über seinen abenteuerlichen Lebenslauf: politische Tätigkeit in den Wirren des Balkankrieges 1912, Kampf um ein unabhängiges Albanien, Widerstand gegen Ahmed Zogu; seit 1926 Mitglied des Bektâshî-Ordens, 1940 Baba, 1946 Dede, 1947 Untersuchungshaft, seitdem Oberhaupt der Bektâshî-Derwische in Djakovica.
    Abstract: In an interview at the Bektâshî cloister at Djakovica Sheikh Baba Kâzim describes his adventurous life, including his political activities during the chaos of the Balkan War of 1912, the struggle for an independent Albania, and resistance to Ahmed Zogu. After 1926 he became a Bektâshî and, through a career in various cloisters in Albanien speaking areas, rose to the rank of Dede. Today he is the most important representative of the Bektâshî order in the Balkan countries.

    Abstract: Nach einem Instrumentalvorspiel des türkischen Volksmusikorchesters "Çalgi" (Hackbrett, Geige, Klarinette, Lauten, Bechertrommel) werden drei türkische Volkslieder mit Instrumentalbegleitung vorgetragen. Ausführende sind ein Volkssänger sowie mehrere Männer und Frauen.

Wesentliche Phasen des Brauchs: Ankunft der Reiter, Sammlung, Prozession durch die Stadt und die angrenzenden Felder, Wettersegen am Altar, Rückkehr in die Basilika.
    Abstract: The film is a comprehensive documentation of the so-called "blood riders" ceremonial procession which is held on the first friday of the Crist's Ascension. The film explains the meaning of the ceremony and describes all details: the preparation, the assembly of the horsemen, the procession around the fields when the holy-blood relic is carried along, prayer for favourable wheather and finally the return to the cathedral.

    Abstract: Nach einem formelhaften religiösen "Wechselgespräch" zwischen Vorbeter und Scheich erfolgt durch die Teilnehmer der eigentliche Zikr (vgl. E 1968). Eine Besonderheit des Melâmî-Zikr ist das Absingen religiöser Lieder in albanischer Sprache.
    Abstract: The Zikr of the Melâmî Dervishes resembles the Zikr of the Chalvetî Dervishes (see Film E 1968) with minor differences: After a formalized religious "dialogue" between the precentor and the Sheikh the participants perform the actual Zikr. It includes the repetition of the word God (hû) along with an il- âhî (religious hymn) in Albanien. Occasionally the precentor interrupts the prayer with the recitation of religious formulare. The prayer is accompanied by rocking movements, and ends with the exclamation "Hû" (God).

    Abstract: The film shows a custom during carneval season which occurs quadrannually under participation of the male population of the village. It depicts the events the day before and the main day of performance that is thursday before carneval sunday.     Abstract: The film presents three Albanian lyrical women's songs and one folk dance from Zur village near Prizren. The songs are sung by five girls to the accompaniment of two tambourines (def). The folk dance, called Dy mollat e kuqe (Two red apples); is performed by a boy and a girl. The name of the dance is symbolical and designates two beautiful persons, a boy and a girl. During the dance the boy and the girl enter into competition, thus expressing their mutual love.

    Abstract: Mitglieder der Folkloregruppe "Shota" führen zwei Volkstänze auf: 1. Frauentanz von zwei Frauen aufgeführt, von denen die eine auch singt und den Def schlägt. 2. Gruppentanz von Männern und Frauen zum Rhythmus der Trommel aufgeführt. Innerhalb dieses Tanzes zeigen zwei der Männer einen Schwerttanz.
    Abstract: The film presents two Albanian folk dances from Metohija, recorded in Decani village near Pec. The first dance is performed by two women, one dancing, singing, and beating the def, the other dancing and gracefully twisting her arms, hands, and fingers. A group of men then dance to the rhythm of the drum (tupan), which beaten in the open air, produces a particularly plangent sound. During the dance two of the dancers, armed with swords, perform the war dance Kallcoja (sword dance). All the performers, men and women, wear the Albanian national costume.

    Abstract: Empfang der Hochzeitsgäste im Hause des Bräutigams, Übergabe der Geschenke, Vorbereiten des Mahls, Tanzen und Singen der Mädchen, Verteilen der Tücher an die Gäste, Abholen der Braut aus dem Nachbardorf, Tanz der Gäste, Abschied der Braut von den Eltern, Ankunft der Braut und Übernahme durch die Schwiegereltern.
    Abstract: The film shows the arrival of the wedding-guests, accompanied by the music of two kettle-drums and two clarinets. The guests hand over wedding-presents. The girls are continuously playing on the def (a kind of small tambourine, beaten with small metallic plates), while the women prepare the meal. The wedding-guests then walk in a procession to the village of the bride, carrying the Albanian national flag. In the village of the bride young and older wedding-guests, arranged in two different groups, perform an Albanian folk dance. The camera also catches the moment when the bride, amid tears, leaves the parental home and enters the carriage which takes her to her husband. Finally we see the bride arriving in the house of the bridegroom.

    Abstract: Das 16,5 m lange Boot wird von Ochsengespannen ins Wasser gezogen und von der Bootsmannschaft über die Brandung gerudert. Das Zugnetz, bestehend aus einem Endsack (88 m) mit der Öffnung in Zugrichtung, zwei Flügeln je 500 m lang und zwei Haltetauen je 2,5 km lang, wird in Halbkreisform ins Wasser gesenkt und anschließend von Ochsengespannen an beiden Enden der Haltetaue an Land gezogen. Dort werden die Fische aus dem Sack geholt und in Körbe gefüllt. An dieser Gemeinschaftsarbeit nehmen 60 Männer und Frauen an See und am Land teil.
    Abstract: Fishing with the large drag net is a collective work, carried out by 60 men and women at sea and ashore. The boat, 16.5 m long, is drawn into the water by oxen and then rowed across the surf by the crew. The drag net, consisting of a large bag (88 m) with an opening at the upper end, two wings each 500 m long and two ropes each 2.5 km long, is put down into the water in a demi-circle and then drawn ashore by oxen put to the two ropes. The fish are taken out of the bag and put in baskets.

    Abstract: An den Vorabenden des Nikolaustages geht eine Gruppe bestehend aus dem hl. Nikolaus, einer zweiten Nikolausfigur, einer Figur mit Tierkopfmaske (dem Klausenbigger) und einer Figur in Fellgewand (dem Rubelz) von Haus zu Haus. Der hl. Nikolaus sagt einen Spruch auf, der Nikolausbegleiter beschenkt die Kinder und der Rubelz droht ihnen. Der Klausenbigger hat keine aktive Funktion.
    Abstract: On the eve of St. Nicholas day (December 6th) a group of mummed young men goes from house to house. The group consists of St. Nicholas, a second Nicholas figure, a figure with an animal mask (the Klausenbigger, which lent the custom its name), and a figure with fur clothing, the so-called Rubelz. In the individual houses parents and children await together the group's visit. Saint Nicholas utters a rhymed saying and then checks to see if the children have learned their prayers and songs. St. Nicholas' companion gives the children sweets, apples, and nuts and leave a switch behind. The Rubelz threatens to tie disobedient children onto his chain. During the visit the Klausenbigger has no active function. In the end, the four masked figures visit a restaurant.

    Abstract: The film presents three Albanian urban folk songs and one piece of instrumental music, instances of Albanian folk song and folk music of Kosovo, performed in the town of Djakovica by the following singers and musicians: Qamili i Vögel (without instrument), Uke Currani (without instrument), Qazim Berisha (playing the twelve-stringed lute; sharki), Malush Ahmeti (playing an old accordion, manufactured at the beginning of the century), Hamez Bala (playing the violon), Shani Meta (playing the mandolin), and Ibrahim Tafolli (beating the tambourine; def, daire). The men are assembled in an old town house at Djakovica and wear the costume of the town.

Säbeltanz, von vier Männern getanzt, bei dem heute statt Säbeln Tücher verwendet werden. 2. Frauentanz, von sechs Mädchen dargeboten. 3. Reihentanz, von Männern und Frauen aufgeführt.
    Abstract: The film presents three Turkish folk dances, performed at Prizren: one sword dance performed by four men, one dance performed by six girls, with the men sitting on the ground, and one dance performed by couples. The dancers are accompanied by the Turkish folk music orchestra of Prizren, "Calgi", consisting of dulcimer, violon, clarinet, lutes, and pot-drum.

    Abstract: An kleinen, mit einer Dubliermaschine zusammengedrillten Drahtstücken befestigt eine Frau Spiegel und Perlen. Aus diesen "Sträußchen" sowie aus Schleifen entstehen 18 "Bäumle", die an einem mit Stoff überzogenen und verzierten Pappring aufrecht stehend befestigt werden. Zuletzt bringt die Frau lange Bänder an und legt die fertige Krone in eine Schachtel.
    Abstract: The film summarizes the making of a bridal crown, a procedure which lasts about 3 days. At first, bay means of a doubling machine, small filaments are twisted together and mirrors and various pearls are fixed onto these "stalks". A number of small "summer nosegaies", consisting of these pearl bouquets and knots, are fixed and tied together on the ornamented cardboard ring, which is already covered with fabrics. Finally long ribbons are added, falling down over the back.
