    Abstract: "This book investigates the politicisation and framing of immigration in the media and political arena in Central Europe, examining two countries - Czechia and Slovakia - in the period surrounding the "European migrant crisis". Following years of immigration being practically invisible as an issue in the socio-political debates in most Central and Eastern European countries, it became a key concern because of the crisis. Analyzing news media items and plenary speeches, this book reveals how securitisation eclipses humanitarian considerations, dominating the discourse around immigration and that media and politicians are the two most important intermediaries from which citizens take cues on issues they rarely experience directly themselves. Im genuin modernen Konflikt des Auseinandertretens von Gesellschaft und Staat, von sich selbst verwirklichendem Individuum auf dem Markt und der Gemeinschaft, zeichnet sich eine neue zentrale Funktion des Staats ab: Die Garantie der Freiheit für seine Bürger. Der Sozialstaat als Mittel dieser staatlichen Freiheitsgarantie erfüllt somit nicht nur eine bedeutende Rolle in der Versöhnung von Individuum und Gemeinschaft, sondern bildet hierdurch zugleich ein zentrales Legitimationselement des modernen Staats. Der Autor Dr. Joshua Folkerts war Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Graduiertenkolleg „Deutungsmacht“ der Universität Rostock sowie Fulbright-Gastwissenschaftler an der Boston University.     Abstract: "This book forwards Assam (and Northeast India) as a specific location for studying operations of gendered power in multi-ethnic, conflict-habituated geopolitical peripheries globally. In the shifting and relational margins of such peripheral societies, power and agency are constantly negotiated and in flux. Notions of masculinity are redefined in an interlaced environment of militarization, hyper-masculinization, and gendered violence. These interconnections inform victimhood and agency among the most vulnerable marginalized constituencies - namely, women and migrants. By centering the marginalized in its inquiry, the book analyzes obstacles to achieving positive, organic peace based on cooperation and mutual healing. The tools used to perpetuate an endless cycle of violence that makes conflict a habit - a way of life - are identified in order to enable resistance against them from within the margins.     Abstract: Mit Diskurs : Ereignis : Praxis legt die Autorin ein dynamisches Theorieprogramm für eine diskurstheoretisch informierte und am Ereignisbegriff orientierte Soziologie der Praxis vor. Sie skizziert die soziologische Relation zwischen den Begriffen Diskurs, Ereignis und Praxis, diagnostiziert deren in Schräglage geratenes Verhältnis und erklärt die Dynamisierung der dichotomen Konzeptionen zum leitenden Prinzip ihrer Argumentation. Durch eine Rekonstruktion der diskurstheoretischen Grundlagen, praxistheoretischen Bedingungen, der Situation der Methodendiskussion sowie der Ausgangslage soziologischer Protestforschung, formiert sie die Basis des Forschungsprogramms und markiert die Frage der Assoziation von Diskursen und Praktiken als Leerstelle, welche am Beispiel der Protestforschung expliziert wird. Kern des Buches ist die differenzierte Auseinandersetzung mit dem Ereignisbegriff, der ausgehend von der Foucaultschen Prägung als Hauptumschlagsbasis weiterentwickelt und in einen Ereignisbegriff überführt wird, der ein Dichotomien überwindendes Verhältnis von Diskurs und Praxis in einem poststrukturalistischen Materialismus gewährleistet. Das Potential des Programms liegt zudem in der Erweiterung der Praxisforschung um eine explizite Macht- und Herrschaftsperspektive, die mit einer Analyse der Praxis des Widerständigen am Beispiel des Yippie Festival of Life vor Augen geführt wird. Die Autorin PD Dr. Franka Schäfer ist Soziologin.     Abstract: This book offers an analysis of the complex and shifting conditions of being young as well as the new ways in which young people engage in politics in Turkey. It is based on a closer examination of young people’s participation in the Gezi protests in 2013. From the perspective of cultural sociology, this work presents a nuanced discussion of the roots and dynamics of young people’s unexpected engagement and spectacular appearance at the protests, with a theoretical focus on the concepts of youth and the political, by exploring questions such as: How did young people experience the protests? How did they reflect on being young? How did they define the political? Grounded in ethnographic field research conducted via in-depth interviews, this book demonstrates that what happened in the Gezi protests was not a sudden and miraculous transformation of apolitical youth into political subjects on the streets, as has often been argued in public discourse. Rather, the protests brought into view the changes which had already been taking place in young people’s lives in Turkey as a result of the effects of both local and global processes, i.e. the influence of authoritarian politics and social change characterized by religion in everyday life, as well as the implications of neoliberal policies in the restructuring of urban spaces.     Abstract: Spätestens seit den 1990-er Jahren erscheint der Begriff Beteiligung in diversen gesellschaftlichen Bereichen als allgemein anerkannter Imperativ, der von unterschiedlichen Akteur*innen als Allheilmittel angepriesen wird. Doch wenn Beteiligung proklamiert wird, bedeutet das mitnichten eine Garantie für gesellschaftliche Teilhabe. Mit Hilfe einer dispositivanalytischen Untersuchung von top-down Beteiligungsmaßnahmen in der Berliner Quartiersentwicklung zeigt Magdalena Otto, wie der Begriff Beteiligung verschiedenartig anschlussfähig ist und dadurch eine kaum hinterfragte Legitimationskraft ausstrahlt. Im Zentrum der hier entwickelten Theorie über den Beteiligungsimperativ steht die Rekonstruktion von vier idealtypisch zu verstehenden Deutungsmustern zur Legitimation von Beteiligungsmaßnahmen sowie ihre intendierten und unbeabsichtigten Folgen. Der konstatierte Beteiligungsimperativ zeigt sich dabei als eine auf Aktivierung setzende, neoliberale Gouvernementalität in Reaktion auf städtische Segregations- und Marginalisierungsprozesse, die Krise des Kommunalstaats und damit einhergehende veränderte Steuerungserfordernisse für Regierungshandeln. Die Autorin Magdalena Otto promovierte zur Beteiligung von Bürger*innen in der Quartiersentwicklung. Zu ihren Forschungsschwerpunkten zählen (Anti-)Diskriminierung, soziale Ungleichheit und Partizipation. Seit 2023 arbeitet sie für das Deutsche Institut für Menschenrechte.

    Abstract: Das Lehrbuch verbindet eine bewährte Orientierung an Schlüsselautor*innen mit einer innovativ-systematischen Darstellungsweise. Mit dem Verständnis von Politischer Theorie als Systematisierung der Rechtfertigung und Kritik politischer Verhältnisse wird ein weiter, aber zugleich eingegrenzter Fokus gesetzt. Im ersten Teil („Klassische Perspektiven“) werden jeweils zwei Figuren der politischen Ideengeschichte kapitelweise gegenübergestellt. Auch im zweiten Teil („Zeitgenössische Perspektiven“) werden zentrale Argumentationsansätze mittels einer vergleichenden Betrachtung von Theoretiker*innen erschlossen. Darüber hinaus werden Forderungen nach einer grundlegenden Neuausrichtung der Politischen Theorie behandelt. Eine übergreifende Klammer bilden Reflexionen zu den Konzepten „Macht“, „Gerechtigkeit“ und „Demokratie“. Der Autor Dr. Michael Haus ist Professor für moderne Politische Theorie am Institut für Politische Wissenschaft der Universität Heidelberg.

It is the first book to take such a broad historical approach to the topic.     Abstract: Der Sammelband zieht eine erste und zugleich umfassende politikwissenschaftliche Bilanz der vierten Regierung Merkel aus CDU/CSU und SPD. In den Beiträgen ausgewiesener Expert*innen werden in einem ersten Teil die Rahmenbedingungen des Regierens durch die Große Koalition zwischen 2017/18 und 2021 analysiert. Hierzu zählen die strategische Positionierung von Regierungs- und Oppositionsparteien, das Koalitionsmanagement, die Koordination der Bundesländer sowie das Abstimmungsverhalten im Bundestag. In einem zweiten Teil wird das Regierungshandeln in allen relevanten Politikfeldern beschrieben, erklärt und bewertet. Hierzu zählt nicht nur die in der zweiten Hälfte der Legislaturperiode alles dominierende Corona-Krisenpolitik. Vielmehr werden auch die wichtigsten Entscheidungen und Nicht-Entscheidungen in Bereichen wie der Finanz- und Sozialpolitik, der Umweltpolitik, der Integrationspolitik oder der Außen- und Europapolitik untersucht und eingeordnet.     Abstract: Bastian Strobel beschäftigt sich in diesem Buch mit dem Verhältnis von Politik und Verwaltung im Nationalsozialismus und im SED-Regime. Auf Basis des in der Verwaltungswissenschaft gut etablierten Konzepts der Verwaltungspolitisierung untersucht er beide Systeme im Rahmen von Einzelfallstudien sehr detailliert. Der Vergleich der beiden Regime zeigt, dass sich die Vorgehensweise der NSDAP und der SED bezüglich der Politisierung des jeweiligen Verwaltungspersonals in vielen Punkten gleichen, beide Parteien jedoch auch eigene Akzente gesetzt haben und sich einige Entwicklungen unterscheiden. Der Autor Bastian Strobel ist Referent bei IT.NRW, dem Statistischen Landesamt des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen. Zuvor war er wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Fachgebiet Public Management der Universität Kassel. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind das Verhältnis von Politik und Verwaltung in Autokratien und die Untersuchung von Verwaltungseliten in Deutschland seit dem Kaiserreich.

    Abstract: In the last decades, violent non-state actors (VNSAs) such as rebel and terrorist organizations have proved their capacity to break international law. The international community, particularly the United Nations (UN), has reacted to this development by redirecting its conflict resolution efforts to these non-state entities. This has turned targeted sanctions into one of the most vital and indispensable foreign policy tools available to the UN Security Council in combating terrorism and contributing to the peaceful resolution of (intra-state) conflicts. Despite the UN Security Council’s growing tendency to sanction VNSAs, there has been little research analyzing the effects of UN targeted sanctions on these non-government actors. This book seeks to fill this gap and shifts the focus on non-state actors by ascertaining the general mechanisms through and conditions under which UN targeted sanctions imposed on VNSAs tend to be effective. The tripartite empirical analysis combining quantitative and qualitative research methods demonstrates that the state-centric understanding of how sanctions work is not simply applicable to the effective sanctioning of violent non-state actors such as rebel and terrorist movements. About the author Christopher Huber is a Research Fellow associated with the GIGA German Institute for Global and Area Studies in Hamburg. His research focuses on international sanctions, counterterrorism and religious conflicts.

    Abstract: When U.S. war resisters turned to Canada as refuge during the Vietnam War and the Afghanistan/Iraq Wars, they not only hoped to forestall deployment to a combat zone but also to build new lives and make a new home abroad. In her empirical study, Sarah J. Grünendahl explores and juxtaposes how well the two war resister 'generations' have been able to establish themselves after all and to what extent they partake in Canadian society. The comparison is instructive for migration and refugee studies altogether: The war resisters in the sample, unlike many other migrant populations, did not have to contend with language and cultural barriers in their destination country, given similarities between the United States and Canada. Sarah J. Grünendahl's research thus allows for an analysis of the effects of residency on migrants' adaptation and participation in the receiving society, isolated from these two common barriers. Further, the study sheds light on how refugees and non-citizens can employ civic engagement to claim a place for themselves and overcome societal exclusion. About the author Sarah J. Grünendahl is research assistant at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Cultural Studies at the University of Applied Sciences Düsseldorf and earned her doctorate in Political Science at the University of Siegen. Her research interests include migration and refugee studies, the effects of legal status on migrants' incorporation, and the nexus between societal participation, place (attachment) and identity.

    Abstract: Contrary to dominant narratives which portray East European politics as a pendulum swing between democracy and authoritarianism, conventionally defined in terms of an ahistorical cultural geography of East vs. West, this book analyzes post-socialist transformation as part of the long downturn of the post-WWII global capitalist cycle. Based on an empirical comparison of two countries with significantly different political regimes throughout the period, Hungary and Romania, this study shows how different constellations of successive late socialist and post-socialist regimes have managed internal and external class relations throughout the same global crisis process, from very similar positions of semi-peripheral, post-socialist systemic integration. Within this context, the book follows the role of social movements since the 1970s, paying attention both to the level of differences between local integration regimes and to the level of structural similarities of global integration. The analysis maintains a special focus on movements’ class composition and inter-class relationships and the specific position of middle-class politics in movements. Agnes Gagyi is a sociologist, working on East European politics and social movements in terms of the region’s long-term integration into world-economic and geopolitical relations. She is Researcher at the Department of Sociology and Work Science, University of Gothenburg, where her current projects look at housing conflicts in Eastern Europe after 2008, and the social conditions of urban green infrastructures in face of the climate crisis. She is a founding member of the Working Group for Public Sociology “Helyzet” in Budapest

    Abstract: This book examines the relationship between the Putin regime and Russkii Obraz, a neo-nazi organization that became a major force on Russia's radical nationalist scene in 2008-10. It shows how Russkii Obraz's rise was boosted by the regime's policy of managed nationalism,' which mobilised radical nationalist proxies against opponents of authoritarianism. In return for undermining moderate nationalists and pro-democracy activists, Russkii Obraz received official support and access to public space. What made this collaboration politically hazardous for the Kremlin was Russkii Obraz's neo-Nazi ideology and its connections to BORN, a terrorist group responsible for a series of high-profile killings. When security forces captured the ringleader of BORN, they precipitated the destruction of Russkii Obraz and a crisis for managed nationalism. Using court records and extensive media and internet sources, this book sheds new light on the complex interaction between the Kremlin, the far-right, and neo-Nazi skinheads during Russia's descent into authoritarianism
