    Abstract: "This book discusses how musicians from Bahia, an emblematic African diasporic location in northeastern Brazil, think about, discuss, compose, rehearse, perform, and stage music inspired by what they perceive to be their own African ancestry. It argues that these musicians assert Afro-Brazilian identities and connect to the African continent and other diasporic places by creatively engaging essentialized notions about African music and culture: instead of mechanically reproducing these tropes, they emphasize them or downplay them. The book theorizes these preconceived notions about African music, culture, and performance as tropes of Africanness, emphasizing that they exist in two interrelated realms: as essentialist ideas in discourse and as concrete practices and sounds. Six commonly encountered tropes of African music are analyzed: the notions that its most important parameter is rhythm and that it is dominated by percussion; that it is meant to be danced to or deeply embodied rather than intellectualized; that it always touches on the sacred; that it is spontaneous and improvisatory; and that it reflects communalism rather than individualism. Through four case studies from Bahia (a jazz big band called Orkestra Rumpilezz, a symphony orchestra called the Orquestra Afrosinfônica, and two berimbau orchestras led by capoeira practitioners), the book demonstrates the nuances of musical creation in the African diaspora, acknowledging the genuine impact that essentialisms have on Bahian music while showing that they may not be an essential part of the musicians' African roots"--

    Abstract: In the early years of the Cold War, Western nations increasingly adopted strategies of public diplomacy involving popular music. While the diplomatic use of popular music was initially limited to such genres as jazz, the second half of the 20th century saw a growing presence of various popular genres in diplomatic contexts, including rock, punk, reggae, and hip-hop.This volume illuminates the interrelation of popular music and public diplomacy from a transnational and transdisciplinary angle. The contributions argue that, as popular music has been a crucial factor in international relations, its diplomatic use has substantially impacted the global musical landscape of the 20th and 21st centuries

    Abstract: Singing the Congregation examines how contemporary worship music shapes the way evangelical Christians understand worship and argues that participatory worship-music performances have brought into being new religious social constellations (“modes of congregating”). Through ethnographic investigation of five of these modes—concert, conference, church, public, and networked congregations—this book seeks to reinvigorate the analytic categories of “congregation” and “congregational music.” Drawing from theoretical models in ethnomusicology, congregational studies, and ecclesiology, Singing the Congregation reconceives the congregation as a fluid, contingent social constellation that is actively performed into being through communal practice—in this case, the musically structured participatory activity known as “worship.” By extension, “congregational music-making” is recast as a participatory religious musical practice capable of weaving together a religious community inside and outside local institutional churches. Congregational music-making is not only a means of expressing local concerns and constituting the local religious community; it is also a potent way to identify with far-flung individuals, institutions, and networks that this global religious community comprises. The unique congregations examined in each chapter include but extend far beyond local churches, revealing widespread conflicts over religious authority and far-ranging implications for how evangelicals position themselves relative to other groups in North America and beyond.

    Abstract: 'Musical Minorities' is the first English-language monograph on the performing arts of an ethnic minority in Vietnam. Living primarily in the northern mountains, many of the one million Hmong in Vietnam have strategically maintained their cultural distance from foreign invaders and encroaching state agencies for almost two centuries. They use cultural heritage as a means of maintaining a resilient community identity, malleable to their everyday needs and to negotiations among themselves and with others in the vicinity. Case studies of revolutionary songs, countercultural rock, traditional vocal and instrumental styles, tourist shows, animist and Christian rituals, and light pop from the diaspora illustrate the diversity of their creative outputs

    Abstract: With its dynamic choreographies and booming drumbeats, taiko has gained worldwide popularity since its emergence in 1950s Japan. Harnessed by Japanese Americans in the late 1960s, taiko's sonic largesse and buoyant energy challenged stereotypical images of Asians in America as either model minorities or sinister foreigners. While the majority of North American taiko players are Asian American, more than four hundred groups now exist across the United States and Canada, and these groups are comprised of people from a variety of racial and ethnic identities. Using ethnographic and historical approaches combined with performance description and analysis, this text explores the connections between taiko and Asian American cultural politics at the intersections of race, gender, and sexuality

    Abstract: Rap existiert nicht auf dem Papier - Rap muss aufgeführt werden. Entscheidendes Qualitätsmerkmal ist dabei der individuelle Stil eines Rappers, sein »Flow«. Johannes Gruber untersucht dieses Phänomen erstmalig genauer anhand der von ihm entwickelten Flowanalyse. Die Anwendung dieser Methode auf über 600 Raptracks und die zugehörigen Texte liefert erstaunliche Ergebnisse und mündet in eine umfassende »Poetik des Rap«. Diese fasst standardisierte Verfahren der Textproduktion und -aufführung zusammen und zeigt den deutschen Rap in seiner ganzen Klanglichkeit. Wie Rapper diese Mechanismen und Strategien nutzen, um ein spezifisches Image bzw. Profil zu generieren, zeigt die Studie anhand der Genre-Stars Sido und Bushido.

    Abstract: Everyday articulations of music, place, urban politics, and inclusion/exclusion are powerfully present in Istanbul. This volume analyzes landscapes of music, community, and exclusion across a century and a half. An interdisciplinary group of scholars and artists presents four case studies: the rembetika, the music of the Asiks, the Zakir/Alevi tradition, and hip-hop, in Beyoglu, Üsküdar, the gentrifying Sulukule neighborhood, and across the metropolis. Alex Papadopoulos is Associate Professor of Geography at DePaul University, Chicago. He studies the contestation of urban space in European cities. Asli Duru is Marie Curie Fellow at The Open University, London, and studies everyday geographies of health and wellbeing.

    Abstract: Klezmer: Music, History, and Memory is the first comprehensive study of the musical structure and social history of klezmer music, the music of the Jewish musicians' guild of Eastern Europe. Emerging in 16th century Prague, the klezmer became a central cultural feature of the largest transnational Jewish community of modern times - the Ashkenazim of Eastern Europe. Much of the musical and choreographic history of the Ashkenazim is embedded in the klezmer repertoire, which functioned as a kind of non-verbal communal memory. The complex of speech, dance, and musical gesture is deeply rooted in Jewish expressive culture, and reached its highest development in Eastern Europe. Klezmer: Music, History, and Memory reveals the artistic transformations of the liturgy of the Ashkenazic synagogue in klezmer wedding melodies, and presents the most extended study available in any language of the relationship of Jewish dance to the rich and varied klezmer music of Eastern Europe. Author Walter Zev Feldman expertly examines the major sources principally in Russian, Yiddish, Hebrew, and Romanian from the 16th to the 20th centuries, including interviews with authoritative European-born klezmorim conducted over a period of more than thirty years in America, Eastern Europe, and Israel. In its musical analysis, this book draws upon the foundational collections of the late Tsarist and early Soviet periods, plus rare cantorial and klezmer manuscripts from the late 18th to the early 20th centuries. - Walter Zev Feldman is a leading researcher in both Ottoman Turkish and Jewish music. During the 1970s he spearheaded the revival of klezmer music. His book, Music of the Ottoman Court (Berlin, 1996) is taught as a basic text world wide. He is also an authority on East European Jewish dance, forming part of his current research on the role of gesture in the performing arts.

    Abstract: Singing God's Words is the first in-depth study of the experience and meaning of chanting or "reading" Torah among contemporary American Jews. This experience has been transformed dramatically in recent years by the impact of digital technology, feminism, the empowerment of lay people and a search for self-fulfillment through involvement with community. At a time when worshippers seek deeper spiritual experience, many Jews have found new meaning in the experience of reading Torah, an act that is broadly accessible to Jewish adults even as it requires intensive immersion with the text of the Bible in Hebrew. This book examines why and how growing numbers of American Jews in all denominations see the public chanting of Biblical texts during the synagogue service as one of the most authentic and personal expressions of their religious identity. Drawing on hundreds of interviews with men and women, both professionals and congregants, Jeffrey A. Summit describes how the reading of Torah embodies their understanding of historical religious practice, even as it is shaped by contemporary views of spiritual experience. Through this act, holiness becomes manifest at the intersection of Biblical chant, sacred text, the individual, and the community. - Jeffrey A. Summit is Research Professor in the Department of Music and Judaic Studies at Tufts University, where he also serves as rabbi and Neubauer Executive Director of Tufts Hillel. He is the author of The Lord's Song in a Strange Land: Music and Identity in Contemporary Jewish Worship (OUP). His CD Abayudaya: Music from the Jewish People of Uganda was nominated for a Grammy Award.

Written in an accessible styles, "The African Imagination in Music" is poised to renew interest in Black African music, and to engender discussion of its creative underpinnings by Africanists, ethnomusicologists, music theorists and musicologists. - Kofi Agawu was born in Ghana, West Africa where he received his initial education before studying in the UK and the US. He has taught and lectured at numerous universities in Africa, Europe and the United States. Dort leitet sie den Forschungsschwerpunkt »Urban Arts in Transition«. Zudem ist sie Gastforscherin der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften. Stefan Schmidl ist Universitätsprofessor für Theorie und Geschichte der Musik an der Konservatorium Wien Privatuniversität der Stadt und wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter des Instituts für Kunst- und Musikhistorische Forschungen an der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften.
    Abstract: Das Design und die Entzifferung des Urbanen vollziehen sich zugleich auf multiplen Ebenen sozialer Konfigurationen und künstlerischer Wahrnehmung. Stadt ist somit way of life, Projektionsfläche, Image und imaginärer Lebensraum, der seit dem 19. und 20. Jahrhundert eines der zentralen programmatischen Motive in Literatur, Malerei, Film und Musik bildet. Im Zentrum dieses Bandes stehen ausdrücklich musikalische Deutungen. Die Beiträge geben Einblick in die Vielfältigkeit künstlerischer Stadterfindungen und untersuchen anhand unterschiedlicher Metropolen-Porträts differenzierte Reaktionen auf das Städtische, Optiken und Ausdrucksformen sowie die Vergangenheit und Gegenwart urbaner Imaginationen.
    Abstract: The design and deciphering of the urban take place at multiple levels of social configurations and artistic perceptions simultaneously. The city has thus served as way of life, projection, image, and imaginary habitat, which has shaped one of the key programmatic themes in literature, painting, film, and music since the 19th and 20 centuries. Expressly musical interpretations are central to this volume. The articles provide insight into the diversity of artistic urban inventions and examine them on the basis of different cities - portraits of differentiated reactions to the municipal, scope, and forms of expression as well as past and present urban imaginations.

Jewish music - a highly debated topic - encompasses a multiplicity of musics and cultures, reflecting an inherent and evolving hybridity and transnationalism. German culture refers to an equally diverse concept that, in this volume, includes the various cultures of prewar Germany, occupied Germany, the divided and reunified Germany, and even 'German (Jewish) memory,' which is not necessarily physically bound to Germany.

    Abstract: Populäre Musik ist direkt und stetig präsent. Es verwundert daher nicht, dass sie seit den 1960er Jahren nicht nur den Habitus des zeitgenössischen Menschen bestimmt, sondern auch den Schreibstil einer Reihe von Gegenwartsautoren beeinflusst hat. In den literarischen Texten von Jack Kerouac, Rolf Dieter Brinkmann, Rainald Goetz und Thomas Meinecke fungiert populäre Musik beispielsweise ganz explizit als Medium der Textkonstitution. Markus Tillmann verfolgt die dabei aufscheinenden intermedialen Zusammenhänge zwischen musikalischer und literarischer Produktionsästhetik von den Beat Poets über die Punk- und Industrial-Szene bis hin zur DJ Culture.

Wie kaum ein anderes Medium gibt sie Aufschluss über männliche und weibliche Identitätsmodelle und damit verbundene Machtstrukturen, über Moralvorstellungen, über intime Wünsche, Sehnsüchte, Hoffnungen und Idealvorstellungen in der Gesellschaft. So umfassend wie in diesem Band wurde das intime Verhältnis von Sex und Musik bisher noch nicht aufgearbeitet

    Abstract: Popmusik ist zu einem komplexen Forschungsgegenstand geworden, bei dem diverse Idiome, Medien und Lesarten interagieren. Die Analyse erfolgt zumeist aus dem Blickwinkel einer singulären Disziplin, etwa der Musik-, Literatur-, Medien- oder Sozialwissenschaft. Jedoch bleibt dabei das Zusammenspiel der einzelnen Komponenten - und mit ihm das Deutungsspektrum des popmusikalischen Textgewebes - notwendig außen vor. Ole Petras entwickelt einen methodischen Ansatz, der stattdessen nach dem Wie der Sinnproduktion fragt und jene Regeln erforscht, die die Verbindung einzelner bedeutungstragender Elemente organisieren. Er zeigt: Was Popmusik bedeutet, ist nachrangig, wenn wir wissen, wie Bedeutung entsteht.
