With media all over the world still marginalizing women and trivializing gender inequalities, how does the situation in the Middle East compare? Proliferating satellite channels have increased women visibility in the region but visibility does not necessarily confer power. This book explores various ways in which media have been used to open up possibilities for women in the Middle East or, conversely, to restrict them. Having as their starting point the diverse experiences and multi-layered identities of women, the contributors treat media institutions and practices as part of wider power relations in society.     Abstract: Annotation, Throughout the Middle East, Islamist charities and social welfare organizations play a major role in addressing the socioeconomic needs of Muslim societies, independently of the state. Through case studies of Islamic medical clinics in Egypt, the Islamic Center Charity Society in Jordan, and the Islah Women's Charitable Society in Yemen, Janine A. Clark examines the structure and dynamics of moderate Islamic institutions and their social and political impact. Questioning the widespread assumption that such organizations primarily serve the poorer classes, Clark argues that these organizations in fact are run by and for the middle class. Rather than the vertical recruitment or mobilization of the poor that they are often presumed to promote, Islamic social institutions play an important role in strengthening social networks that bind middle-class professionals, volunteers, and clients. Ties of solidarity that develop along these horizontal lines foster the development of new social networks and the diffusion of new ideas

    Abstract: Main description: This study is the first to make a systematic attempt to relate the universal theories of Niklas Luhmann (1927-1998) and Charles S. Peirce (1839-1914) to one another. On the basis of a critical functional analysis of systems theory and semiotic theory, a newly designed semiotic system is proposed that displays a higher resolution and recombination potential than the individual disciplines involved. The theoretical results can be used as a foundation for dealing with concrete linguistic, literary, or sociological problems. Damit rücken die Texte in II Sam 1-5 verstärkt in den Blick, denen eine Schlüsselstellung für die literarische Genese der Davidüberlieferung zukommt. Die vorliegende Studie ermittelt einen ersten durchlaufenden und noch vorexilischen Darstellungszusammenhang, der im 7. Jh. v. Chr. entstanden ist. Entsprechend erklärt sie das Doppelkönigtum Davids über Israel und Juda als eine protodeuteronomistische Gründungsgeschichte der späten Königszeit. Die Untersuchung schließt mit einer redaktionsgeschichtlichen Skizze der Daviderzählungen im zweiten Samuelbuch und einer Revision der geschichtlichen Zeugnisse.
    Abstract: Main description: Recent research has led to a weakening of the two classical hypotheses on the story of David's rise and a succession narrative. Instead, attention has focussed on the texts in II Samuel 1-5, which are seen as being of crucial importance for the literary genesis of the story of David. The present study reveals a first continuous account from before the time of exile, which was produced in the 7th century BC. Thus it explains David's double kingship of Israel and Juda as a proto-deuteronomistic foundation narrative from the late Age of Kings. The study closes with a sketch of the editorial history of the David narratives in II Samuel and a revision of the historical records.

    Abstract: When Flesh Becomes Word collects nine different examples of British libertine literature that appeared before 1750. Three of these--The School of Venus (1680), Venus in the Cloister (1725), and A Dialogue Between a Married Lady and a Maid (1740)--are famous "whore dialogues," dramatic conversations between an older, experienced woman and a younger, inexperienced maid. Previously unavailable in an affordable edition, these dialogues combine sex; education,medical folklore, and erotic literature in a decidedly proto-pornographic form. This edition presents other important examples of libertine literature, including bawdy poetry, a salacious medical treatise, an irreverent travelogue, and a criminal biography. The combination of The combination of both popular and influential texts; presented in this edition provides an accessible introduction to the variety of material available to eighteenth-century readers before the publication of John Cleland's Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure in 1749; 1700 - 1799

    Abstract: Es kommt nicht oft vor, dass man innerhalb einer Arbeit sowohl einen generativ-grammatischen als auch einen soziolinguistischen Ansatz findet. Die vorliegende Studie versucht diesen Brückenschlag anhand von Daten aus der französischen Interrogativsyntax, u.a. zur wh-in-situ-Form, zur stilistischen Inversion, zur langen Extraktion und zur que-qui-Problematik. Gradierte Grammatikalitätsurteile bilden die empirische Hauptdatenquelle, wobei auch Daten aus qualitativen Interviewerhebungen und Lesezeitmessungen einbezogen werden. Zugleich werden methodologische Fragen zur Messbarkeit von Grammatikalität behandelt. Die Auswertung des empirischen Materials revidiert und präzisiert einige vertraute Auffassungen. Beispielsweise erweist sich die Evidenzgrundlage für die Annahme von LF-Bewegung bei wh-in-situ-Strukturen des Französischen als überraschend dünn. In einem weiteren Schritt wird der Einfluss externer Faktoren auf die Grammatikalitätsurteile statistisch untersucht. Hierbei beschränkt sich die Arbeit nicht auf den Standardsatz soziodemographischer Merkmale. Sie bezieht das Lebensstilkonzept aus der soziokulturellen Theorie von Pierre Bourdieu ein, das sich in der Tat als besonders relevant für die Identifikation und Erklärung von Variationsphänomenen in der Grammatik (z. B. Präferenzen für bestimmte Wortstellungsvarianten) erweist. Diese Studie zeigt, wie die gemeinsame Berücksichtigung einer grammatiktheoretischen und sozialstrukturellen Analyse zu einem präziseren Verständnis der französischen wh-Interrogation führt.

Entsprechend erklärt sie das Doppelkönigtum Davids über Israel und Juda als eine protodeuteronomistische Gründungsgeschichte der späten Königszeit. Die Untersuchung schließt mit einer redaktionsgeschichtlichen Skizze der Daviderzählungen im zweiten Samuelbuch und einer Revision der geschichtlichen Zeugnisse , Main description: Recent research has led to a weakening of the two classical hypotheses on the story of David's rise and a succession narrative. Instead, attention has focussed on the texts in II Samuel 1-5, which are seen as being of crucial importance for the literary genesis of the story of David. The present study reveals a first continuous account from before the time of exile, which was produced in the 7th century BC. Thus it explains David's double kingship of Israel and Juda as a proto-deuteronomistic foundation narrative from the late Age of Kings.     Abstract: This book brings together an international team of leading translation teachers and researchers to address concerns that are central in translation pedagogy. The authors address the location and weighting in translation curricula of learning and training, theory and practice, and the relationships between the profession, its practitioners, its professors and scholars. They explore the concepts of translator competence, skills and capacities and two papers report empirical studies designed to explore effects of the use of translation in language teaching. Eine den kanonischen Endtext ernst nehmende Exegese macht sich zur Aufgabe, diese Einheit in Aufbau und theologischem Anliegen zu verstehen. Die versammelten Beiträge gehen signifikanten, die Einzelschriften übergreifenden Strukturen nach. Besonderes Gewicht wird auf die Rekonstruktion thematischer Fäden gelegt, die dadurch entstehen, dass die einzelnen Propheten Themen ihrer Vorgänger (z.B. Tag Jahwes, Umkehr, Rolle der Völker) aufgreifen und neu zuspitzen. Die Beiträge entstanden 1999-2002 im Rahmen der Arbeitsgruppe The Formation of the Book of the Twelve der Society of Biblical Literature.
    Abstract: Main description: For some years the view has become established that the Book of the Twelve is a systematically structured literary unity. An exegesis which takes the final canonical text seriously undertakes to understand the structure and theological intention of this unity. The papers collected here attempt to reveal significant structures which overarch the individual components. Particular emphasis is placed on the reconstruction of thematic threads which are created when individual prophets take up topics from their predecessors (e.g. Jehovah's Day, conversion, role of the peoples) and intensify them. The papers were written between 1999 and 2002 under the aegis of the Society of Biblical Literature's Working Group on The Formation of the Book of the Twelve.

    Abstract: From its launch in 1997, the Frankfurt technology stock exchange developed spectacularly as did other European technology exchanges. Many Europeans thought that a new age of entrepreneurship had dawned. Following the downturn, however, the search for blame began. Much of this blame was undifferentiated and subjective. Public policy lessons were not drawn. Written by a well-known commentator of the European venture capital community, this book analyses the rise and decline of European internet entrepreneurship. The effects of both the public promotion of venture capital investments as well as the timing of telecommunications reform are examined in detail in various European countries, in particular in Germany and Sweden.     Abstract: This book analyses the policy mixes that provide the best possible incentives for firms and governments to act on climate change and sign up to international climate agreements. In doing so, the authors address a multitude of related issues including the linkages between flexible mechanisms and voluntary agreements; regulation and taxation; the opportunities and barriers of the Kyoto Protocol for industry; and the incentives for firms to undertake climate-related R&D and investments. As well as illustrating the environmental benefits and cost-effectiveness of alternative policy mixes in reducing GHG emissions, the authors also offer sensible policy prescriptions for increasing the numbers of countries that ratify and implement climate agreements
