Abstract: This book offers a much-needed analysis of the difficulties associated with providing state protection from violence based on sexual orientation and gender identity in Europe. Focusing on Poland as a national case study, encompassed in the broader European context, the book provides a holistic analysis of internal and external factors influencing state-level policy outcomes. By focusing on hate crime advocacy and carefully dissecting it from the rest of the LGBT rights “package,” the book fills a gap in queer scholarship, which has overlooked this aspect of mobilisation. The book also examines the emerging international standards and provides a comparative analysis of national laws, policies and practices on anti-LGBT hate crime across Europe. Highlighting variance in outcomes in different areas of LGBT rights, this book considers the role of lesser-known actors and mechanisms who are key in enacting critical policy changes. State Responses to Anti-LGBT Violence provides a critical reflection on the complicated relationships between queer communities and the state. Dr Piotr Godzisz is Associate Professor in Criminology and Co-Director of the Centre for Hate Studies at University of Leicester.

Abstract: "The Covid19 pandemic contributed to shed light on the unresolved issues that have long underpinned Italian regionalism. This book re-constructs and assesses them from a multi-dimensional perspective, offering an original, rigorous and timely analysis of territorial governance dynamics that will be valuable also for other countries." —Gianfranco Viesti, Professor of Applied Economics, University of Bari, Italy. This book offers a comprehensive analysis of multi-level governance, political communication and public opinion in Italy during the Covid-19 pandemic. It demonstrates how the crisis acted as a catalyst in amplifying and exacerbating existing territorial disparities, while also highlighting the resilience and adaptability of some regions to cope with the emergency. The book also delves into the national and sub-national responses to the pandemic, examines how politicians and regional leaders presented them to the public, and how they were perceived by citizens. Through this analysis, it provides deeper insights into the intricate interplay between centralization and decentralization, as well as the diverse strategies employed by policymakers to address a wide spectrum of health, social, and economic challenges. Ultimately, by shifting the focus from institutions to citizens, the book reflects on how external shocks can both challenge the democratic underpinnings of decentralization and offer opportunities to strengthen them. These findings have important repercussions for many other nations, where debates over centralization and decentralization remain a pertinent and important issue. Abstract: This book engages the concept of necropolitics to present a vision of how to understand the physical body as a space of power and resistance to social order, in the context of the Kashmir resistance. The author sheds new light on the relations between India and Pakistan, with a focus on tensions over the Kashmir region, in order to better understand the emergence and stabilization of the narrative that criminalizes and thus justifies the population that rebels against state actions in the region. The research draws from archival and interview research and presents the reader with new insight into both conceptual and material dimensions of necropolitics. Abstract: In Nigeria, armed banditry has emerged as a contemporary threat to national security. Commentators and scholars have repeatedly pointed to overlapping foci such as herders-farmers' conflicts, warlordism, ungoverned spaces, transnational criminal networks, and the proliferation of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) from Libya as dynamics influencing the current security dilemma in Nigeria. The emergence of armed banditry has triggered the prevalence of everyday killings, kidnapping for ransom, property destruction, and cattle rustling. However, the group's origin remains obscure, while its objectives and organizational structure are fuzzy. This book aims to unravel the evolution, dynamics, and trajectories of armed banditry in Nigeria. As it explores the activities of armed banditry in Nigeria, the debate will focus on its historical context, socio-economic consequences, transnational dimensions, and the response to armed banditry in Nigeria. Furthermore, the book will explore whether the scourge of armed banditry represents a new terrorist organization with a distinct ideological orientation (if at all) or another non-state armed group creating and profiting from a criminal economy through the reign of terror. In response to the increasing concern for the criminal activities of armed banditry in Nigeria, the book anticipates unpacking its emerging trends and operational nomenclature. Abstract: GLOBAL ISSUES Series Editors: Jim Whitman · Paolo D. Farah This comparative law book aims at formulating a new analytical approach to constitutional comparisons, assuming as a starting point the different legal perspectives implied in the (Sunni) Islamic outlook on the juridical phenomena and the Western concept of law, with particular reference to constitutionalism. The volume adopts a wider and comprehensive viewpoint, comparing the different ways in which the Islamic sharī ʿa and Western legal categories interact, regardless of substantive contents of specific provisions, thus avoiding conceptual biases that can sometime affect present literature on the matter. The book explores the various dynamics subtended to the interactions between sharī ʿa and Western constitutionalism, providing a new classification to the different contemporary models. The philosophical and legal comparisons are analyzed in a dynamic way, based on a wide range of contemporary constitutional systems, virtually encompassing all the States in which Sunni Islam plays a major cultural role, and taking also into consideration non-State actors and non-recognized actors. Abstract: This book provides a comprehensive account of the tumultuous political landscape of Zimbabwe. Delving into historical and contemporary perspectives, the author analyses the relationship between the ruling ZANU-PF party and the opposition, exposing the pervasive influence of foreign powers and their ‘regime change’ agendas. Amidst western-imposed economic sanctions, the book examines how political opposition has struggled to maintain its footing in the face of ZANU-PF's rhetoric on preserving the nation's sovereignty. Drawing on the powerful theoretical frameworks of Gramsci's hegemony theory and instrumentalism, the book dissects the constraints on multiparty democracy under ZANU-PF's rule. From the party's manipulation of liberation narratives to the subtle intricacies of ‘Mugabeism’, a violent and ideological stronghold, the author unveils the tactics employed to maintain power. The chapters uncover the pivotal role played by the military throughout Zimbabwe's history: from the days of the liberation struggle to the shocking events of 2017, when Mugabe's grip on power was diminished by the very force that had propped him up for decades, the author reveals how the military's involvement has thwarted opposition players' attempts to claim power. Boldly challenging the notion that constraints solely rest on ZANU-PF, this book calls attention to the shortcomings of opposition parties in navigating Zimbabwe’s treacherous political landscape. Using compelling evidence and unparalleled analysis, the book is an essential read for those seeking to understand the intricate web of power, manipulation, and struggle that has defined Zimbabwe's political journey. Aaron Rwodzi is Secretary of the Development Studies Association of Zimbabwe (DeSAZ). He holds a PhD from the University of ZwaZulu Natal, South Africa, and his research interests span political and social histories, and democracy, race, and cultural studies.

Abstract: Not as noisy as populist anti-gender campaigns, neoliberal policy regimes pose an equally significant challenge for gender equality projects. Anna Elomäki and Hanna Ylöstalo are incisive in showing how economic policy, strategic management frameworks and an 'evidence hierarchy' constrain feminist claims but also provide footholds. A must-read book for gender equality advocates, practitioners and scholars in the neo-liberal world far beyond Finland. Marian Sawer, Emeritus Professor, Australian National University, Australia This rich theoretically driven book retraces state transformations within Finland and shows in excellent empirical case studies how gender actors and practitioners try to keep the balance between feminist knowledge and specific gender policy implementation. Elomäki and Ylöstalo show how neoliberal governance reforms are deeply gendered and shift the meaning of gender equality to suit the purpose of state reform. A must read for anyone interested or involved in gendered state policy and economic governance! Stefanie Wöhl, Professor of Politics, UAS BFI Vienna, Austria This book analyses the effects of public governance reforms on gender equality policy in Finland. Recent economic crises, rising austerity and increasing opposition to gender equality have led to the defunding of gender equality bodies, and the side-lining of gender equality as a political goal. This policy backlash has taken place alongside transformations to the state and governance, that have changed the discourses, knowledge, actors, and practices of gender equality policy. This book contributes to these discussions by demonstrating the subtleties of the constantly changing governance reform agendas, their operation in practice, and how they intertwine with other elements of the gender equality policy backlash. It is based on more than 100 interviews with civil servants, politicians, non-governmental organisations, social partners, and think tanks, and a broad range of policy documents and media material. It will appeal to students and scholars of gender studies, public policy and governance. Anna Elomäki is Academy Research Fellow at Tampere University, Finland. Her research interests include economic policies and governance, EU politics and gender equality policy. Hanna Ylöstalo is Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Turku, Finland. Her research interests include knowledge-policy relations, welfare state reform and gender equality policy. .

Abstract: “For those reared on a diet of Saint Pierre, Rousseau and Kant, it will come as a shock to find that British international thought often pre-empted their ideas or developed them separately, based on a deep understanding of commerce and the global balance of powers.” —Peter Niesen, Hamburg University “Britain’s transformation into an economic powerhouse over the course of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries was matched by a formidable group of contributors to economic theory and international political thought. This excellent volume canvasses the ideas of over a dozen prominent “economists,” including Hobbes, Locke and Bentham, as well as Hume and Smith. The work will prove a major resource to scholars in philosophy, the history of political economy, and international relations.” —Margaret Schabas, University of British Columbia-Vancouver, Canada This book articulates international political theory in dialogue with economics on several questions. It asks: how has modern international theory been adjusted and nourished by economic ideas, theories and practices? How far has the distinctive contribution of some theorists to international theory been informed by their views on economy? What has been the impact of the theory of the state for economic and international theory? What sort of economic thinking has led to revise the debates constitutive for the modern international realm? How have economic debates been rhetorically connected to political debates in the field of international relations? His main research interests include the history of international political thought, cosmopolitanism, Jeremy Bentham, the enlightenment. Mikko Jakonen is Professor of Social and Public Policy, University of Eastern Finland. His main research interests are in social policy, work, economy, social theory and history of political thought.

Abstract: This book explores the discursive dimension of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. It analyzes how political leaders, mass media, social media, and ordinary people in Ukraine, Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, and France discuss the war. War propaganda and counterpropaganda structure discourses about the invasion, strengthening post-truth conditions. The book highlights the consequences of the growing distrust in the institutional truth-teller, mass media. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is the first social media war. Social media became the principal source of information about the invasion. The rise of digital media did not change the tendency of the discourses about war to be territorially segregated according to national boundaries. Nationalization of discourses about war continues to prevail over their globalization. The corpora containing more than 180 million words in four languages inform the analysis. The data was collected during the first year and a half of Russia’s all-out war in Ukraine. Abstract: This book provides analytical, conceptual, and practical insights into how public policy processes and outcomes are conceptualized and framed. Drawing on Ghanaian experiences, but with extensive illustrations from other African countries, it showcases issues of commonality and diversity in public policy with analytical insights and real-life policy concerns that specifically addresses how citizens engage with the state, and how they think and function as social actors within the socio-cultural settings of Africa. The book brings public policy to life as a practical and problem-solving discipline, with examples of how policy actors such as the legislature, governance architects, the media, and the judiciary become arenas for contest. Linking public policy to development paradigms, governance, and responsible citizenship, it is important reading for students and scholars of public policy, governance, and politics in Africa, as well as practitioners. Abstract: Chapter One: Introduction -- Chapter Two: Theoretical and Legal Framework -- Chapter Three: Biharis in Bangladesh -- Chapter Four: Findings of the Field Work -- Chapter Five: Biharis’ Access to Citizenship Rights: Theory, Law, and Reality -- Chapter Six: Conclusions and Recommendations.
Abstract: This book deals with the citizenship status of the Biharis in Bangladesh and their ability to access rights associated with citizenship. The main argument of the book is that although legally the Biharis are citizens of Bangladesh, they still do not have access to many important rights of citizenship that can make their citizenship meaningful. Their inability to access many important citizenship rights made them de facto stateless, although they are de-jure citizens. Taking a law and society approach this book examines both legal and non-legal factors behind the deplorable conditions of the Biharis in Bangladesh. Based on fieldwork, this book analyses that the Biharis’ inability to access citizenship rights is inconsistent with citizenship theory, citizenship laws, and the Constitution of Bangladesh. To make the Biharis citizenship effective or meaningful the author suggests some recommendations for policy changes that would enable Biharis to access rights associated with citizenship. Abstract: The book provides an examination of the evolution of China and Taiwan after 1949. This starting point situates the contestation for power between the two entities in the region after Taipei was recognized by the international community as the representative of China. The ramifications for Taiwan were drastic as country after country switched its recognition to China including those in the Caribbean and Latin America. Taiwan was able to maintain diplomatic relations with several countries in both regions through diplomatic strategies including providing financial assistance. This has waned over time considering China’s economic rise to power and Western Europe’s and the United States’ fall in global economic and political prestige and power. This book discusses China’s and Taiwan’s continuing engagement with countries in Latin America and the Caribbean with a particular emphasis on the sharp rise in trade between China and the two regions. China’s foreign policy agenda, and how Taiwan reacts to China’s policies, are also examined. Cassandra Rachel Veney is Executive Director of the Humanities in Leadership Learning Series at Case Western Reserve University. Sabella Abidde is Professor of Political Science at Alabama State University. He is the editor of the two book series: African Governance, Development, and Leadership and Africa-East Asia International Relations.

Abstract: This volume offers a critical examination of how counterterrorism measures influence democratic processes, with a specific focus on the case study of post-2011 Tunisia. More concretely, it assesses the effects of counterterrorist discourses and practices on the democratic transition initiated after the Dignity Revolution of 2010-2011. Tunisia has been the only Arab country to experience a structured democratic transition after the Arab uprisings. However, the measures taken to counter the rise of salafi jihadism in the country strongly marked the transitional process. This research analyses the detrimental impact of counterterrorism on Tunisian political transition and democratic consolidation. It highlights human rights violations and their legitimization, the strengthening of repressive mechanisms, the enactment of liberticidal laws, the normalization of exceptional governance, and the constriction of public space, while also detailing its negative effects on the state's economy. The book posits that the counterterrorism rhetoric and policies have played a significant role in facilitating the democratic backsliding witnessed in Tunisia beginning in 2021. The research adopts a discursive-ethnographic approach that integrates critical analysis of presidential and parliamentary discourse with extensive fieldwork among institutional and associative actors in Tunisia. The volume represents the first comprehensive and holistic assessment of counterterrorism discourses and policies implemented in post-2011 Tunisia, highlighting their progressive impact on democratic transition. Abstract: "Defence procurement has bedeviled governments in Canada, and indeed around the world, for decades. Jeffrey Collins provides an important contribution to finding a better way forward. A must-read for current and aspiring leaders." - Michael Wernick, Clerk of the Privy Council (2016-2019), Jarislowsky Chair in Public Sector Management, University of Ottawa and author of Governing Canada. "If everyone in the business reads this book, Canada saves billions buying kit and it's instantly the most valuable book ever published." - Dr. Ian Brodie, Professor of Political Science, University of Calgary, Chief of Staff to Prime Minister Stephen Harper (2006-2008) and author of At the Centre of Government. "This well-research and authoritative book takes a commonly misunderstood and often maligned process, sheds light on its many challenges, and offers some potentially pragmatic solutions. It is a “should read” for anyone interested in this important topic; and, a “must read” for government officials, elected representatives and media pundits alike.” - Mark Norman, Vice-Admiral, Royal Canadian Navy (Ret’d) This book challenges the perceived underlying causes and culprits of the ongoing challenges in Canadian defence procurement, arguing that although headlines often put the blame on the political leadership, the defence procurement bureaucracy, ongoing pressures in the defence industry and continuous demands placed on Canada though its alliances also carry a large part of the responsibility. Focusing on four main case studies: the Fixed Wing Search and Rescue Plane, the Joint Support Ships, the Medium Support Vehicle System and the Halifax Class Modernization, the author offers a comparative analysis of how these ongoing procurement efforts were dealt with by different administrations, from Jean Chrétien and Paul Martin to Stephen Harper. Jeffrey F. Collins is Adjunct Professor at the University of Prince Edward Island.

Abstract: The book focuses on different practices of associated labor in Brazil and Argentina, in the case of the workers’ recuperated factories, over the past 40 years. Novaes analyses labor practices from a critical Marxist perspective as a reaction to the misery of neoliberalism. Deindustrialization, austerity programs, increasing commodification and international competitiveness have severely deteriorated the living and working conditions of the majority of Latin Americans. However, alternative labor, production and educational practices have developed in this increasingly ruthless neoliberal capitalism. Although they are still small, they indicate a potential way out of the capitalist mode of production. Novaes directs his special attention to the “education beyond capital,” which has accompanied these alternative labor and production practices (from alternative job training in recuperated companies and the movement of landless rural workers MST). Henrique Tahan Novaes is Professor of Philosophy and Sciences at UNESP Marília São Paulo, Brazil.

Abstract: This book critically explores how and to what extent artificial intelligence (AI) can infringe human rights and/or lead to socially harmful consequences and how to avoid these. The European Union has outlined how it will use big data, machine learning, and AI to tackle a number of inherently social problems, including poverty, climate change, social inequality and criminality. The contributors of this book argue that the developments in AI must take place in an appropriate legal and ethical framework and they make recommendations to ensure that harm and human rights violations are avoided. The book is split into two parts: the first addresses human rights violations and harms that may occur in relation to AI in different domains (e.g. border control, surveillance, facial recognition) and the second part offers recommendations to address these issues. It draws on interdisciplinary research and speaks to policy-makers and criminologists, sociologists, scholars in STS studies, security studies scholars and legal scholars

Abstract: “This book is one of the most comprehensive and enlightening works on constitutional government I have ever read. Its ultimate aim is to suggest changes in the present constitution of the United States. But in doing so it provides a history of thinking about the nature and significance of constitutions and constitutional government from ancient thinkers, to early modern thinkers, to the founding figures of the US constitution, Adams, Madison, Hamilton, Jefferson, etc. and later thinkers from Franklin to Dewey who influenced the way democracy and constitutional government in the US was understood.” —Professor Robert Kane, University of Texas, Austin, USA At this moment of extreme political polarization in the U.S. which has the potential to threaten the very foundations of the state, Professor Michael DeArmey proposes a revised and updated Constitution. This enriched, reborn Constitution retains much of the current Constitution but also seeks to meliorate and indeed resolve entirely many of the seemingly intractable problems in American democracy. The rights of American citizens are revisited and expanded, and for the first time a wholly new Bill of Goods sets out government’s role in assisting in the necessities for life. Also new is a Bill of Citizen Duties and Responsibilities. The book contains a careful defense of the proposed changes, including individual chapters focusing on the most controversial topics. Other chapters explore why a constitution is needed and survey the Federalist papers on Constitutional structure. The book also examines the writings of Aristotle, John Adams’ Defence, and the correspondence of Madison and Jefferson. Michael H. DeArmey is Moorman Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at the University of Southern Mississippi, USA.

Abstract: This book seeks to identify the reasons why some countries were more efficient and effective than others in responding to the COVID 19 pandemic, and why the global community failed to coalesce. What are the political determinants of the different state responses to the pandemic? Why was scientific advice rejected or ignored in many countries? What has been the role, respectively, of neoliberalism, populism, and authoritarianism in the making of Covid-19 policy? What role have each of these factors played in the uneven and clearly inadequate global response to the pandemic? In an effort to understand why some states failed to handle the pandemic properly, some of the literature suggests that populism is at the root of the current failure of international co-operation. The global financial crisis of 2008-10 triggered significant cooperation within the G-20, led by the combined efforts of the United States and China. These forms of cooperation have clearly disappeared in the context of the pandemic, not only with respect to economic policy but also in public health and management. The authors of this volume link the different state responses to the pandemic-- from its inception to the start of the vaccination campaign, and to the political regimes prevailing in each. In particular, the present volume focuses on a distinction between the responses of neo-liberal regimes, populist regimes and authoritarian ones. Leila Simona Talani has been Professor of International Political Economy in the Department of European and International Studies at King’s College London since 2014. She is the current editor of the Palgrave series: The Politics of Citizenship and Migration. Alan Cafruny (Ph.D.) Cornell (1983) is Henry Platt Bristol Professor of International Affairs at Hamilton College. He is a former series editor (with Herman Schwartz) of the series: Advances in International Political Economy, sponsored by the International Political Economy Section of the International Studies Association.

Abstract: This book deals with a central aspect of Marx’s critique of society that is usually not examined further since it is taken as a matter of course: its scientific claim of being true. But what concept of truth underlies his way of reasoning which attempts to comprehend the social and political circumstances in terms of the possibility of their practical upheaval? In three studies focusing specifically on the development of Marx’s scientific critique of capitalist society, his journalistic commentaries on European politics, and his reflections on the organisation of revolutionary subjectivity, the authors carve out the immanent relation between the scientifically substantiated claim to truth and the revolutionary perspective in Marxʼs writings. They argue that Marx does not grasp the world ‘as it is’ but conceives it as an inverted state which cannot remain what it is but generates the means by which it can eventually be overcome. This is not something to be taken lightly: Such a concept has theoretical, political and even violent consequences – consequences that nevertheless derive neither from a subjective error nor a contamination of an otherwise ‘pure’ science. By analyzing Marx’s concept of truth the authors also attempt to shed light on a pivotal problematique of any modern critique of society that raises a reasoned claim of being true. Matthias Bohlender is Professor of Political Theory at the School of Cultural Studies and Social Sciences, Universität Osnabrück, Germany. Anna-Sophie Schönfelder is Research Associate at the DFG Collaborative Research Centre “Dynamics of Security”, Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen, Germany. Matthias Spekker is Associate Lecturer in Political Theory and the History of Ideas and currently teaching at the Leuphana Universität Lüneburg, Germany. The authors worked together in the DFG funded research project. “Marx and the ‘criticism in a hand-to-hand fight' – On a genealogy of modern critique of society”, Universität Osnabrück, Germany.

Abstract: Maschinelles Lernen stellt zunehmend einen wichtigen Faktor soziotechnischen Wandels dar.

Abstract: "Through the lens of neo-colonialism and global coloniality, the text revitalises the conventional debates on the logic of the UK’s interests in Africa, amidst the reality of Brexit and the resurgence of the ‘new scramble’ for Africa. Mark Langan interrogates the ‘celebrated’ conversations around Global Britain and British exceptionalism." - Dr Adeoye O. Akinola, University of Johannesburg "With an exceptionally in-depth examination of key geopolitical issues such as trade, aid, development finance and security, Langan uncovers how the same old colonial interventions and political rhetoric with racist undertones are being refashioned to perpetuate an emergent Empire 2.0." - Dr Nathan Andrews, McMaster University "Mark Langan offers a powerful critique… [the text] sheds light on the neo-colonial nature of these [Africa-UK] relations, but also highlights the ability of Africans to resist the ‘Global Britain’ project." - Professor Mehdi Boussebaa, University of Glasgow This book examines the implications of Brexit for Africa-UK relations amid a ‘new scramble’ for the continent. Engaging Nkrumah on neo-colonialism and recent scholarship on global coloniality, Langan here underscores concerns that Brexit was fuelled by an imperial romanticism that now gives rise to a Global Britain project involving the perpetration of ‘Empire 2.0’ in Africa. In this context, he examines UK elites’ pursuit of Brexit trade deals and the ‘development’ consequences of premature market opening. Throughout its chapters, this work assesses strategic usages of UK aid monies in terms of economic leverage and the externalisation of migration and highlights the impact of UK development finance and corporate activities for the health and wellbeing of workers and host communities. Significantly, Langan explores the UK’s pursuit of security interests and human rights criticisms and concludes by highlighting African agency to resist the Global Britain project amid the fragility of the British state itself. Mark Langan is Senior Lecturer in International Political Economy at King's College London, UK. He is also the author of Neo-Colonialism and the Poverty of 'Development' in Africa (Palgrave Macmillan, 2018). .

Abstract: INTRODUCTION:THE WEST AND ISLAM: JURIDICAL CATEGORIES IN A TRANSITIONAL GLOBAL SCENARIO -- CHAPTER I: SOVEREIGNTY AND UNIVERSALISM AFTER WESTPHALIA -- CHAPTER II: THE LEVIATHAN AND THE CALIPH BETWEEN AUTHORITY AND LAW -- CHAPTER III: LAW, SHARĪʿA AND HUMAN REASON -- CHAPTER IV: SPIRITUAL COMMAND AND TEMPORAL RULE -- CHAPTER V: ENTERING INTO A DIALOG: FROM THEORY TO PRACTICE -- CONCLUSION: NEW JURIDICAL INSTRUMENTS FOR A NEW WORLD.
Abstract: This comparative philosophy of law book aims at formulating a new analytical approach to the Islamic legal tradition based on ‘juridical categories’, a concept that facilitates comprehension and understanding of juridical phenomena. Building upon legal comparativism and legal pluralism, this project intends to avoid bias caused by universalizing Western categories when analyzing foreign juridical notions, which inevitably results in the miscomprehension of non-Western ideas and institutions. Unlike existing literature, this project will not focus on substantive comparisons between normative contents, but on the ‘juridical perspectives’ that helped to shape the Islamic and Western legal orders. The book focuses on the most relevant juridical questions regarding the Islamic and Western legal perspectives, such as the different visions regarding juridical spatiality, the role of human reason and the relationship between law, man and the divinity. While contributing to legal philosophy, this work intends also to develop and define a new interdisciplinary approach, aiming to provide a starting point for novel analyses in research fields such as legal comparativism, legal pluralism, and constitutional law. Finally, by formulating a new interdisciplinary approach, it will provide a foundational discussion of a continuously evolving subject that will never be exhaustively explored. As such, it aims at broadening scholarly reflections on the relationship between the West and Islam, eventually placing these concepts within a suitably comprehensive and contextualized framework. Abstract: This book is organized around the personal struggles of ten extraordinary French women activists: Eugenie Niboyet, Eugenie Foa, Suzanne Voilquin, Josephine Bachellery, Pauline Roland, Jeanne Deroin, Elisa Lemonnier, Desiree Gay, Adele Esquiros, and Marie Noemie Constant. Ranging in age from 52 to 20 in 1848, coming from different economic backgrounds, these women share a common quest to be included in the economic and political rights won by the revolt against the July Monarchy.Banding together in the face of exclusion from the right to work guaranteed to all men in February 1848, they write petitions to the Provisional Government, and create the first daily feminist newspaper, "La Voix des femmes." The newspaper is a forum for their demands: midwives who demand to be paid as civil servants, domestic workers who demand support while unemployed, teachers who demand opportunities for higher education and for higher wages. The right to vote and the right to divorce are debated in the newspaper.Seeking to widen their support, Niboyet and her cohort launch a political club, Le Club de femmes, which is ridiculed in the satiric press. The women activists of 1848 do not withdraw from the public sphere. They form workers' associations. Deroin and Roland are imprisoned for their activism. All continue to work for women's rights as teachers, writers, and artists. The women of 1848 inspire successive generations of women to continue their struggle

Abstract: In this engaging book, Maria Chiara D’Argenio delineates a turn in recent Latin American filmmaking towards inter/cultural feature films made by non-Indigenous directors. Aimed at a global audience, but played by Indigenous actors, these films tell Indigenous stories in Indigenous languages. Over the last two decades, a growing number of Latin American films have screened the Indigenous experience by combining the local and the global in a way that has proved appealing at international film festivals. Locating the films in composite webs of past and present traditions and forms, Indigenous Plots in Twenty-First Century Latin American Cinema examines the critical reflection offered by recent inter/cultural films and the socio-cultural impact, if any, they might have had. Through the analysis of a selection of films produced between 2006 and 2019, the book gauges the extent to which non-Indigenous directors who set out to engage critically with colonial legacies and imaginaries, as well as with contemporary Indigenous marginalization, succeed in addressing these concerns by ‘unthinking’ and ‘undoing’ Western centrism and coloniality. Drawing on a wide range of disciplines and considering the entire cinematic process – from pre-production to the films’ production, circulation and critical reception – Indigenous Plots in Twenty-First Century Latin American Cinema makes the case for a holistic cultural criticism to explain the cultural and political work cinema does in specific historical contexts. Maria Chiara D’Argenio has published extensively on Latin American cinema and Peruvian visual culture and is lecturer in the Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies at University College London, UK.

Abstract: This book explores the involvement of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in the issue area of environmental and disaster displacement. By considering both agencies’ historical involvements, their responses to Typhoon Haiyan, and first-hand accounts from both agency staff and other experts, this book outlines how inter-agency involvement in the issue area has been categorised by divisions of agency structures and mandates, activities, and even personalities. While historically inherited differences exist, environmental and disaster displacement has led to a converging of agency roles and amplified tensions, at a time when cooperation is critical. Abstract: Does America still count in the world? Can the world still count on America? In raising such questions halfway into a series of systemic shocks that began in September 2001, Simon Serfaty, a long-time scholar of international politics, reminds Americans that their country’s well-being and that of the world are intertwined. Play it again, Sam: History is in a foul mood again, and this is no time to come home and leave behind an unfinished European Union facing the ghosts of a revanchist Russia still claiming the Old World as its own; a strategic dark hole in the Greater Middle East, on the eve of a global Sarajevo moment; and China’s surging hegemonic power in a continent fraught with too much history and too little geography. Admittedly, what is good for America may no longer be best for all the West, and what is good for the West may no longer be good for much of the Rest: the unipolar moment is irreversibly over. Yet, writing in an elegant style and with much historical insight, Serfaty argues that even with the old power map irreversibly gone, mainly to the benefit of the non-Western world, a new world order for the twenty-first century will remain dependent on the U.S. role, its capabilities and its efficacy, as well as its leadership and its purpose. Simon Serfaty is Professor and Eminent Scholar (Emeritus) in International Studies at Old Dominion University (ODU), in Norfolk, Virginia, USA, and the Zbigniew Brzezinski Chair (Emeritus) in Global Security and Geostrategy at the Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS) in Washington, DC., USA. A prolific writer on global foreign and security policy for the past five decades, always close to policymakers on both sides of the Atlantic, Serfaty has been a guest speaker in nearly fifty countries. He lives in Washington, DC.

Abstract: If you ever wondered who becomes an American ambassador and why, this is the book for you. It describes how Foreign Service officers become ambassadors by rising up through the ranks, and why they typically make up about 70 percent of the total number of ambassadors. It also covers where the other 30 percent come from—the political appointees who get the job because they helped elect the president by supporting him as a campaign contributor, a political ally, or a personal friend. It explains why, despite being illegal and a threat to national security, selling the title of ambassador remains a common practice that is also unique to the United States. It considers why some suggestions for reform are misguided, what might be done, and why who the president is matters so much in determining how well the United States will be represented abroad. This updated and revised edition of Jett's classic book not only provides a timely overview of American ambassadorship for Foreign Service Officers, aspiring diplomats, and interested citizens, but also calls for much-needed reform, describing the dire implications of failing to change our ambassadorial appointments process for the future of American diplomatic practice and foreign policy. Dennis C. Jett is Professor of International Affairs at Penn State University, USA. As a career diplomat, he served as Ambassador to Peru and Mozambique and in four other countries. He has a Ph.D. in International Relations from the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa.

Abstract: "The UN is not impenetrable, nor is it static. Kirsten Haack here gives us revealing and nuanced gendered data over time to chart and make sense of the actual workings of the UN. I felt like a feminist miner as I dug into this timely book." — — Cynthia Enloe, author of Bananas, Beaches and Bases, updated edition (2014) “This book fills a yawning gap. Bringing together feminist theory and leadership studies with an impressive array of data and case studies, Kirsten Haack demonstrates the difference that action on gender parity can make in the flow of ideas, norms, and policies.” — — Margaret P. Karns, Professor Emerita of Political Science, University of Dayton and Senior Fellow in Global Governance and Human Security, University of Massachusetts Boston, USA “The achievement of gender parity at the UN is the longest revolution. This is an important book that should be read by all those who care about effective global governance.” — — Jacqui True, Director, Monash Gender, Peace and Security Centre, Monash University, Australia The face of international politics has changed significantly in the 21st century: it has become increasingly female. Whether that includes women in multilateral meetings, global conferences and embassies, or women at the UN and one of its many agencies in the field, it is apparent that women are accessing leadership positions in a variety of areas. This book investigates the development of gender equality at the United Nations by analyzing women in leadership roles. This introduction of empirical feminism to the study of international organizations applies what is known about women’s participation and representation in comparative politics and gender studies to the United Nations System. It traces women’s access to leadership roles, and explains where and why a range of hurdles prevent women from participating in the work of the UN. In doing so, it offers insights into recruitment and human resources practices and their politics, and into leadership by bureaucratic actors. Kirsten Haack is Senior Lecturer in International Relations at Northumbria University, UK.

Abstract: This book examines local migration policy in Sweden in light of the European migrant crisis. The novel approach of this volume covers both local governments’ policies on admission of immigrants and their efforts for enhancing social integration. The focus is on the division of responsibilities between political levels, examined through theories encompassing both governance structures and output and outcomes of policy. Sweden is a rare example where migration policy has undergone massive changes in the last decade. During the crisis, the country received some of the largest flows of immigrants in relation to its population compared with other European countries. Drawing from statistical material, case studies and a rich body of interviews, this innovative work provides a valuable resource that aspires to investigate the significance of the local level of government in migration policy. The objective is to reach general conclusions that go beyond the realms of the empirical focus. Gustav Lidén is Associate Professor of Political Science at Mid Sweden University, Sweden. Jon Nyhlén is Senior Lecturer of Political Science at Stockholm University, Sweden. .

Abstract: “The more divisions along ethnic, linguistic, religious and nationhood lines, the more important become intergovernmental relations as the glue that holds a country together, but also the more difficult to achieve cooperation. The editors must be congratulated having brought together a set of excellent chapters on pertinent countries characterised by such divisions in both First and Third World contexts.” – Professor Nico Steytler, SARChI Chair in Multlevel Government, Law and Development, University of the Western Cape, South Africa “These accomplished authors, under the inspiring leadership of Fessha, Kössler, and Palermo, investigate the potential of intergovernmental relations for stability and peace in established and aspiring democracies whose societies are deeply divided. A must read for anyone interested in the peaceful management of political conflicts.” – Professor Alain Gagnon, Alain G. Gagnon, Canada Research Chair in Quebec and Canadian Studies, Université du Québec à Montréal, Canada “Intergovernmental relations are a critical aspect of any system of multi-level government. A study of how they work in divided societies is long overdue, and welcome.” – Professor Cheryl Saunders, Laureate Professor Emeritus at the University of Melbourne, Australia This edited volume examines the form and operation of intergovernmental relations in divided societies. Using eight country case studies, it explores the interplay between politicised ethno-cultural diversity and intergovernmental relations (IGR). The book examines whether and how the distinctive identity of particular subnational units and the attending competing constitutional visions shape the dynamics of IGR. The book also examines the impact of identity politics on institutions and instruments of IGR. Yonatan T. Fessha is Professor of Law at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa. Abstract: This book addresses the question of what socialism is according to fundamental values rather than institutions. Arguing that Marxist socialism is not only more gradual but also more radical than how it is usually understood, this book shows that socialism extends liberalism by inheriting and furthering liberal justice, including fundamental human rights. Simultaneously, socialism ultimately rejects liberalism because it does not consider liberal values, such as liberty and equality, society’s primary principles. Satoshi Matsui offers a new theory: alienation has two dimensions. Marxists seek to rectify policies that violate justice in a capitalist society, and injustice in capitalism is alienation’s first dimension. From a communist society’s perspective, however, justice itself is an alienated idea and the second dimension of alienation. Marx’s theory of alienation does not deny the liberal theory of justice but is rather a universal system that encompasses it. By fundamentally reexamining Marxism, this volume provides a basic guideline for overcoming capitalist society and constructing a communist society. Satoshi Matsui is Professor of Economics at Senshu University, Japan, where he teaches Marxist economics and social philosophy. He studied philosophy at the University of Tokyo and earned a Ph.D. in economics at Hitotsubashi University. He has also worked for Ritsumeikan University and Toyama University, Japan, in the past.

Abstract: This book broadly analyzes the displacement or forced relocation of Adivasis Indigenous peoples from the Narmada Valley in India due to the construction and execution of a large development project, the Sardar Sarovar project, which has substantially transformed Adivasi lives, roles, practices, and autonomy, and increased their dependence on capital, market, unsustainable farming practices and urban jobs. Globally, Indigenous communities live within a legacy of environmental dispossession due to economic development that dismantles their mental and physical well-being and a land-based way of life. Appropriation, dispossession, and accumulation is historical and contemporary. Stories of Adivasi people illustrate the horrors of systematic marginalization, in general, and Adivasi women’s reduced autonomy and economic sufficiency, in particular. Key to mention here is that decades of resistance, protests, counter-struggles, marches, direct action did not overturn bureaucratic regressions or structural and direct violence towards marginalized or resettled Adivasi people, but enabled networks of solidarity arguing their rights and access. The book does not attest to state or corporate power, but validates Adivasi agency and autonomy. Abstract: ‘Hugo Rojas and Miriam Shaftoe’s analysis of the human rights abuses of the Pinochet dictatorship and the transitional justice policies that have been implemented in Chile in the past thirty years sheds light on both the successes and failures of these policies and their implications for Chilean politics and society. By connecting the evolution of human rights to the power of Chile’s multiple political actors, the authors are able to provide an in-depth and detailed analysis of both the policies and the forces behind those policies. This book is essential to understand not only the human rights abuses of the Pinochet dictatorship and the policies that followed, but also the difficulties in achieving any substantial policy changes and success in a divided society.’ —Silvia Borzutzky, Professor of Polical Science, Carnegie Mellon University, USA This book offers a synthesis of the main achievements and pending challenges during the thirty years of transitional justice in Chile after Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship. The Chilean experience provides useful comparative perspectives for researchers, students and human rights activists engaged in transitional justice processes around the world. The first chapter explains the theoretical foundations of human rights and transitional justice. The second chapter discusses the main historical milestones in Chile’s recent history which have defined the course of the process of transitional justice. The following chapters provide an overview of the key elements of transitional justice in Chile: truth, reparations, memory, justice, and guarantees of non-repetition. Hugo Rojas is Professor of Sociology of Law and Human Rights in the Faculty of Law, Alberto Hurtado University, and Researcher in the Millenium Institute on Violence and Democracy Research (VIODEMOS), Chile. Miriam Shaftoe is Research Assistant on Human Rights and Transitional Justice in the Faculty of Law, Alberto Hurtado University, Chile. She studied Social Sciences in Conflict Studies and Human Rights at the University of Ottawa, Canada.

Abstract: "Lowell Brown has written a compendious, even-handed, exhaustively-researched exploration of the arguments for and against the proposition that an American President can be criminally prosecuted while in office. No scholar, advocate, or citizen concerned with the scope of presidential power or the real danger of an emergent culture of executive branch impunity should be without this book.” —Frank O. Bowman, Professor of Law at the University of Missouri, USA, and author of High Crimes and Misdemeanors: A History of Impeachment for the Age of Trump (2019) This book provides an in depth look at the constitutional, historical, and political arguments concerning presidential immunity from prosecution, as well as the opinions of the Office of Legal Counsel that provided the justification for the decision not to prosecute President Trump. Focusing on those opinions, the book examines the constitutional basis of presidential immunity, both textual and historical, as reflected in the deliberations of the 1787 Convention and the ratification debates. The opinions are viewed in the context of the criminal investigations of Presidents Nixon and Clinton that gave rise to those opinions, as well as the pronouncements of the Supreme Court concerning their claims, and those of President Trump to immunity from judicial inquiry. Lastly, the book analyses presidential immunity in light of the separation of powers, the availability of impeachment, and the discordance between presidential immunity and the rule of law. H. Lowell Brown is a practicing attorney specializing in white collar criminal defense and compliance, and has taught courses in white collar crime, international criminal law and procedure and jurisprudence at the University of Maine Law School, USA. He has written numerous law journal articles on issues of white collar crime and ethics, and is the author of five books, including The American Constitutional Tradition (2017) and High Crimes and Misdemeanors in Presidential Impeachment (2010).

Abstract: This book states that burden-sharing is one of the most persisting sources for tension and disagreement within NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation). It also belongs to one of the most studied issues within NATO with distinguishable traditions and schools of thought. However, this pertinent question has been rarely discussed extensively by academics. The key idea of the book is to make burden-sharing more understandable as a historical, contemporary and future phenomenon. The authors take a comprehensive look at what is actually meant with burden-sharing and how it has evolved as a concept and a real-life phenomenon through the 70 years of NATO’s existence. Abstract: This textbook provides students of US Politics with an informed scholarly analysis of recent developments in the American political environment, using historical background to contextualize contemporary issues. As the ninth edition, this book reviews a time of political controversy in the United States, touching on topics such as gender, economic policy, gun control, immigration, the media, healthcare, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the widespread social protests against police brutality. The book looks both backwards to Trump's presidency and forward to Biden's. Ultimately, the editors and contributors evaluate the significance of these events on the future of American politics, providing a perspective that is at once broad and meticulous. Abstract: “This book offers a ground-breaking interpretation of class, corporate and state power, through the all-important case study of GE.This extraordinarily valuable work of scholarshipwill transform the field of political economy.” —Alfredo Saad-Filho, Professor of Political Economy and International Development and Chair of International Development, King’s College London, UK “Maher’s impressive book draws on political economy, critical state theory, and historical institutionalism to elaborate a theory of the integral state. It is a major contribution to critical state theory and American political development.” —Clyde W. Barrow, Professor and Chair of Political Science, University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, USA “Maher's excavation of GE delivers an ambitious theoretical treatise offering insights ranging across political economy, finance, the theory of the corporation, the understanding of the American state and the corporate-state nexus.” —Sam Gindin, former Research Director of the Canadian Auto Workers Union This book advances an original conception of the relationship between state and corporate power in the United States. Using what he terms an Institutional Marxist framework, Maher argues that, far from passively responding to interest group pressures, the state has been a key agent in politically mobilizing business, and has played an active role in the organization of lobbying groups. Such business associations do not merely express the pre-existing interests of their corporate members, but are also mechanisms through which the state organizes the political power of the capitalist class. They form part of what the author refers to as an integral state—a wider network of state power which traverses and interpenetrates the state bureaucracy, the legislature, the industrial policy apparatus, and corporate governance. Based on extensive archival research, this book tracks the role of the General Electric Company as a pillar of the integral state in the United States from the finance capital period (1880 to 1930), through the managerial period (1930-1979), to the restructuring leading up to the age of neoliberalism (1979-present). Stephen Maher is a Post-Doctoral Fellow at Ontario Tech University, Canada.

Abstract: “With verve and impressive erudition Marcelo Badaró Mattos tackles a big subject: the historical and sociological debates on Marx’s notion of the working class. Applying a global historical approach, he proves that the concept is—despite the many controversies it has caused—still indispensable for understanding our world. I highly recommend this sophisticated and challenging study.” — Marcel van der Linden, Senior Researcher, International Institute of Social History, The Netherlands ”The Working Class from Marx to Our Times is truly a tour de force, an analytic sweep through the conceptual and practical issues that engage those confronting capitalism and its devastating impact on 21st-century lives. It addresses old thought and new subjects, doing so with exhilarating imagination. A must-read for all who value rigorous intelligence and demand social justice.” —Bryan D. Palmer, Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada “This new book by Marcelo Badaró Mattos takes up a crucial theme of our time: who is the working class and how it is configured. The author takes a suggestive journey to demonstrate how the Marxian conception of the working class is broad and complex and rejects any reductionism.” — Ricardo Antunes, Professor of Sociology, Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Brazil This book reviews Marx’s contributions to the debate on the working class. It also presents exercises of dialogue between Marx’s and Marxists’ discussions on the working class and empirical elements of class reality today, as well as debates in the social sciences and historiography on the same issues. The thesis defended in the book is simple: the “working class,” also called the “proletariat,” as it appears in the work of Karl Marx, had and has validity as an analytical category. Nevertheless, Marx’s discussion on the issue is complex and the category in his approach is wider than many Marxists have presented it. Marcelo Badaró Mattos is Full Professor of Brazilian History at Universidade Federal Fluminense, Brazil. He is the author of Laborers and Enslaved Workers (2017).

Abstract: “After a decade of counter-revolutionary backlash, Hicham Alaoui offers a much-welcomed alternative to the current impasse, with this solid study of how a pacted transition could drag Arab countries out of the dictatorial quagmire.” —Jean-Pierre Filiu, Professor of Middle East Studies, Sciences Po, Paris School of International Affairs, France “Hicham Alaoui presents a bold and rigorous endeavour to explain how a ‘democratic pact’ could work in the Middle East notwithstanding the religious factor that is too often perceived as preventing the democratisation of the region. A sound and timely critic of the ‘Muslim exceptionalism.’” —Olivier Roy, Professor, European University Institute, Italy “This unique study is a cry from the heart for democratization of Muslim majority countries coupled with theoretically sophisticated, empirically grounded analyses of how democratic transitions can be secured.” —Bob Springborg, Visiting Professor, Department of War Studies, King’s College, London “This book provides a fine-grained, paired comparison between Tunisia and Egypt in the immediate aftermath of the ‘arab spring’ political upheavals of 2011.” —Laurence Whitehead, Senior Research Fellow, Nuffield College, Oxford University, UK This book provides a new theory for how democracy can materialize in the Middle East, and the broader Muslim world. It shows that one pathway to democratization lays not in resolving important, but often irreconcilable, debates about the role of religion in politics. Rather, it requires that Islamists and their secular opponents focus on the concerns of pragmatic survival—that is, compromise through pacting, rather than battling through difficult philosophical issues about faith. This is the only book-length treatment of this topic, and one that aims to redefine the boundaries of an urgent problem that continues to haunt struggles for democracy in the aftermath of the Arab Spring. Abstract: Following Marx’s own itinerary from Paris to London, from politics to the critique of political economy, The Marx of Communism delves into a creatively unfolding international debate on the democracy-communism relation, while supporting a 21st century communism as a social alternative to capitalism. Taking into consideration Marx’s analysis of communism both as a movement and a social formation, this study focuses on the dialectics of transition from capitalism to communism. Dealing with communism as the outcome of a long-term cultural and political process, the author defends Marxian communism as the open-ended constitution of a self-governed demos, whose citizens create their own way of life on the ground of a stateless and classless society. From this point of view, the end of the state does not mean the end, but the revival of politics in terms of a communist bios. Reshaping their collective and personal values and setting limits to the production/technology dynamics of their economy, this book argues, the citizens of a communist polis form a promising antithesis to the private individuals of a capitalist society. Alexandros Chrysis is Professor of the Philosophy of History & History of Ideas at Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences, Greece. Abstract: “Robertson guides us to a deeper understanding of Swift's intention in writing his tale of Gulliver’s fantastical voyages. We discover an exploration of the permanent questions that characterize human life and define our contemporary dilemma, including: what constitutes knowledge, and how can we ensure it is directed toward the human good? We gain fresh tools to investigate such questions with Robertson as our skillful guide.” —Patrick Malcolmson, Professor Emeritus, Department of Political Science, St. Thomas University, Canada “This book is a much needed re-discovery of Swift. We can all gain from Robertson’s study a new appreciation of Swift's greatness as a thinker in addition to a literary giant and, of course, a satirist.” —Colin D. Pearce, Lyceum Professor, Lyceum Program, Clemson Institute for the Study of Capitalism, USA This book analyzes Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels from a political philosophy perspective. When authors have focused on politics in Swift’s writings, this has usually meant a study of how Swift located himself on issues of his day such as church and state, and Ireland. Robertson claims by contrast that Gulliver’s Travels is fundamentally a book about the “ancients” (e.g. Plato, Aristotle), and the “moderns” (science and technology), and their contrasting views about the human condition. The claim that the Travels is “a kind of prolegomena” to political philosophy leaves open the possibility that it does not achieve, or seek to achieve, a fusion of various teachings but rather uses the device of alien societies to point us to uncomfortable aspects of political philosophy’s “larger questions” we are prone to ignore. Swift, Robertson argues, draws our attention to some version of the classical republic, as idealized in Aristotle’s political writings and in Plato’s Republic, as opposed to a modern regime which, at its best or most intellectual, emphasizes modern science and technology in combination as a way to improve the human condition. Lloyd W. Robertson is a former lecturer in political science at St. Thomas University in Canada, among other post-secondary institutions.

Abstract: “Very few studies have endeavoured to explore how neoliberal policies of the Bangladeshi state impacted institutions such as education and military, contributed to the othering in social milieu, and shaped the daily lives of the people. Mustahid untangles this relationship, analyzes them in-depth and challenges the conventional wisdom. Empirical data gathered from long field research has been weaved with the theoretical insights and offers a unique perspective.” — Ali Riaz, Distinguished Professor of Political Science, Illinois State University, and President of the American Institute of Bangladesh Studies (AIBS) “Bangladesh has long been viewed as a donor darling in the international aid industry and a crucible for development programs, policies, and non-governmental organizations, yet poverty and inequality persists. Husain’s book examines this puzzle and offers a theoretically rich and original interpretation of the history of development in Bangladesh and how the interplay of development, neoliberalism and Islamism have shaped the evolution of the Bangladeshi state, society, and economy in recent years.” — Liam Swiss, President, Canadian Association for the Study of International Development (CASID) “A brilliant piece of scholarship! In juxtaposing the country at the crossroads of globalization with machinations by international and local interest groups, Mustahid has beautifully illustrated the complexity of the neoliberal problem.” —Taj Hashmi, author of Fifty Years of Bangladesh, 1971-2021 This monograph explores dual hegemony and the politics of development in Bangladesh. The interdisciplinary research covers thematic areas of development, Islam-neoliberalism, and military’s private sector engagements. This book is of interest to scholars of development studies, political Islam, and security studies, including terrorism and the politics of South Asia. Abstract: This edited volume traces the development of the Marxian theory of finance in Japan. Japanese Marxists have long been engaged in this field of study, yet their achievements are hardly known in other languages. Japanese Discourses on the Marxian Theory of Finance brings together in English for the first time six core essays essential to the understanding of the history and development of Japanese Marxian economics. Part I considers the so-called Uno-Miyake debate, which shaped the direction of the research in postwar Japan. Part II includes the three core essays influenced by Uno, including an essay by Shigekatsu Yamaguchi, who introduced a new method to systematically deal with “credit creation” which must be duly taken into consideration if scholars are to analyze today’s “financialization." Finally, the last two essays follow from Yamaguchi’s influential theory to consider the relation of banking with the capital market to complete the theory of finance in Marxian economics. .

Abstract: This book brings together recent research on the sociopolitical history of Latin American statistics from the nineteenth to the first half of the twentieth century. Reflecting the influence of social constructivism in the social sciences, it sheds new light on the historical emergence and development of both statistical reasoning and practices within a region traditionally seen as a passive consumer of foreign-produced theories and methods. By analysing the early enthusiasm for enumerating reality and the processes of institutionalisation of statistics in different national spaces, from Mexico to the Southern Cone, these studies show the ways in which Latin America adapted and used this modern tool of government and social classification to build political regimes and scientific arenas. The volume offers valuable insights into the divergent regional trajectories of this discipline, advancing towards an understanding of statistics and its past from a truly global perspective. The book’s strength comes from presenting the perspective of those directly involved, current and former Australian departmental secretaries.” — Andrew Podger, Honorary Professor of Public Policy, Australian National University, Australia “Christine Shearer’s terrific exploration of trends in contemporary public administration is essential reading for anyone wanting to make sense of how things work in government. Her clear-eyed study, drawing on interviews with senior public servants, confirms that grand reform ideas must work through complex – often invisible – gear shifts before the rubber meets the road. This book is a treasure trove of insights.” — Michael Mintrom, Professor of Public Policy and Director of Better Governance and Policy, Monash University, Australia. This book draws on empirical research to provide unique insight into the craft of public administration of the most senior echelons of the Australian Public Service (APS). An analysis is offered of public sector reforms and contemporary management ideas on which they were based, from the 1980s across Westminster polities. This book addresses how Departmental Secretaries construct their craft today amid such reforms, concluding with a conceptual model of the craft of public administration and implications for theory and practice. Christine Shearer is an Executive Director within the Australian Tax Office.
