Abstract: ”This book is a must-read for so many people: it is an essential guide on how to do outstanding, transparent qualitative research; a critical reflection on the internal workings of the European Parliament; and a much-needed discussion of the role that gender, diversity and equality play in everyday (political) practices.” ---Ariadna Ripoll Servent, Professor for Politics of the European Union, Salzburg University, Austria “Guide to Qualitative Research in Parliaments provides a concise, hands-on guide to qualitative parliamentary research, including all stages of the research process. Contributing fascinating insights from a research project, rich examples and practical guidance, this is a must-read for scholars interested in qualitative research and a useful tool for students.” ---Josefina Erikson, Associate Professor in Political Science, Uppsala University, Sweden This open access book is a hands-on guide on doing qualitative research in parliaments, exploring achievements and drawbacks for all. From early-career scholars looking for an ‘in’ to start their research to senior academics interested in methodological details, the book offers a novel approach to discussing qualitative methodologies. It presents unique insights based on a large-scale qualitative study in the European Parliament using interview and ethnographic data. Comprehensive yet accessible, the book accounts the step-by-step process of qualitative research in parliaments, offering a reflexive and analytical perspective that moves beyond a textbook or theory-only format. Abstract: Chapter 1- Introduction: Governing Gender Equality Policy in Changing State -- Chapter 2- Theorising Shifting Public Governance from a Feminist Perspective -- Chapter 3- Strategic Governance and Gender Equality Policy -- Chapter 4- Workfare Reform and Family Leave Policy -- Chapter 5 - Economic Governance and Gender Budgeting -- Chapter 6 - Evidence-Based Policy and Feminist Knowledge -- Chapter 7- Conclusions.
Abstract: Not as noisy as populist anti-gender campaigns, neoliberal policy regimes pose an equally significant challenge for gender equality projects. Anna Elomäki and Hanna Ylöstalo are incisive in showing how economic policy, strategic management frameworks and an 'evidence hierarchy' constrain feminist claims but also provide footholds. A must-read book for gender equality advocates, practitioners and scholars in the neo-liberal world far beyond Finland. Marian Sawer, Emeritus Professor, Australian National University, Australia This rich theoretically driven book retraces state transformations within Finland and shows in excellent empirical case studies how gender actors and practitioners try to keep the balance between feminist knowledge and specific gender policy implementation. Elomäki and Ylöstalo show how neoliberal governance reforms are deeply gendered and shift the meaning of gender equality to suit the purpose of state reform. A must read for anyone interested or involved in gendered state policy and economic governance! Stefanie Wöhl, Professor of Politics, UAS BFI Vienna, Austria This book analyses the effects of public governance reforms on gender equality policy in Finland. Recent economic crises, rising austerity and increasing opposition to gender equality have led to the defunding of gender equality bodies, and the side-lining of gender equality as a political goal. This policy backlash has taken place alongside transformations to the state and governance, that have changed the discourses, knowledge, actors, and practices of gender equality policy. This book contributes to these discussions by demonstrating the subtleties of the constantly changing governance reform agendas, their operation in practice, and how they intertwine with other elements of the gender equality policy backlash. It is based on more than 100 interviews with civil servants, politicians, non-governmental organisations, social partners, and think tanks, and a broad range of policy documents and media material. It will appeal to students and scholars of gender studies, public policy and governance. Anna Elomäki is Academy Research Fellow at Tampere University, Finland. Her research interests include economic policies and governance, EU politics and gender equality policy. Hanna Ylöstalo is Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Turku, Finland. Her research interests include knowledge-policy relations, welfare state reform and gender equality policy. .

Abstract: This open access book provides the first ever authoritative collection of scholarly insights, based upon original research, into the political groups of the EP tackling the fundamental changes since the Lisbon Treaty and the upsurge of radical right parties. It analyses political groups and their importance from multiple perspectives critically assessing their role and significance in EU politics. Each chapter is authored by leading scholars in the field, working on key topics in relation to political groups: political group formation and function, their role in parliamentary and EU policy-making, the way that Eurosceptic MEPs influence (or not) the Parliament, and the nature and form of interactions with external actors. In doing so, each chapter opens hitherto unexplored ‘black boxes’ in the political work of the EP, such as the internal practices of, and power relations within the political groups, and informal arenas of intra-group decision-making. Abstract: Although the European Union (EU) is often seen as a progressive gender equality actor, its neoliberalised economic policies are hostile to gender equality. The EU’s gender equality policy has always been tied to the EU’s economic priorities, and in the aftermath of the financial and economic crisis of 2007–2008 some EU institutions have explicitly promoted arguments about the benefits of gender equality for economic growth and competitiveness. This chapter maps the actors, processes and knowledge that have contributed to the neoliberal economisation of EU’s gender equality policy and asks how the proliferation of arguments and knowledge about macroeconomic benefits has affected these policies. The chapter argues that economisation limits the possibilities of feminist governance actors and feminist knowledge to challenge the EU’s gendered economic policies and the economic priorities, ideas and values that shape its gender equality policy

Abstract: “This book offers a collection of insightful and important studies of a long neglected area in gender and politics research. It spans from case studies of gender equality in national trade unions in Europe to the role of social partners in the European Union. A must-read for everyone who wants to understand more about the recent development of gender, power and corporatism in Europe.” – Christina Bergqvist, Professor of Political Science, Uppsala University, Sweden “This volume will interest politics researchers/students as well as those in other fields including sociology, employment relations, business and management studies. Its focus on gender and social partners and how they both shape and challenge gender inequalities is more than timely, it is absolutely essential for understanding how a better world can be built post-pandemic. Individually the chapters address a wide range of pressing issues situated in context of European countries which the editors pull together analytically and theoretically in their overview chapter. Highly recommended reading.” – Gill Kirton, Professor of Employment Relations, Queen Mary University of London, UK This book breaks new ground in gender and politics research by studying the multiple ways in which gender and intersectional equalities shape and are shaped by social partners representing employers and employees in Europe. The chapters in this volume explore the impact of social partners on (in)equalities, taking into account phenomena such as neoliberalisation, austerity, and the COVID-19 crisis. This volume contributes to research on issues such as domestic work, the gender pay gap, and the persistent undervaluation of women’s labour and feminized reproductive labour, in particular care work. It also represents a significant contribution to the literature on gender equality policy. The book’s focus on social partners provides important insights that help to explain the persistence of gender inequalities and the difficulties of adopting and implementing policies to combat them. Paula Koskinen Sandberg is Postdoctoral Researcher at Tampere University, Finland.
