Abstract: Service-level objectives (SLOs) are a key component of the service-level agreement (SLA) between your business and your customers. SLOs define the level of service you’ve agreed to provide and offer a means to measure that service. As such, they’re critical for ensuring reliability...if used correctly. Join us for a special conversation on SLOs with Sam Newman and site reliability engineer Alex Hidalgo. You’ll learn how to build an SLO-based approach to reliability at your own organization as you explore everything from the concepts, philosophies, and definitions you need to know to the various components of SLOs, how to use them successfully, why they work, and how you can make them work for you. Along the way, Sam and Alex will also discuss some of the more complicated aspects of implementing an SLO-based approach, including how to create meaningful service-level indicators (SLIs) and how to assign accurate SLO targets so that you get useful alerts for your team—and company-wide buy-in. What you’ll learn and how you can apply it Explore the origins of, need for, and challenges around SLOs and SRE What’s coming next for infrastructure and ops This recording of a live event is for you because… You want to learn how to use SLOs at your company to improve resilience. Abstract: As Python continues to grow in popularity, projects are becoming larger and more complex. Many Python developers are now taking an interest in high-level software architecture patterns such as hexagonal/clean architecture, event-driven architecture, and strategic patterns prescribed by domain-driven design (DDD). But translating those patterns into Python isn’t always straightforward. With this practical guide, Harry Percival and Bob Gregory from MADE.com introduce proven architectural design patterns to help Python developers manage application complexity. Each pattern is illustrated with concrete examples in idiomatic Python that explain how to avoid some of the unnecessary verbosity of Java and C# syntax. You’ll learn how to implement each of these patterns in a Pythonic way. Architectural design patterns include: Dependency inversion, and its links to ports and adapters (hexagonal/clean architecture) Domain-driven design’s distinction between entities, value objects, and aggregates Repository and Unit of Work patterns for persistent storage Events, commands, and the message bus Command Query Responsibility Segregation (CQRS) Event-driven architecture and reactive microservices

Abstract: Operators are a way of packaging, deploying, and managing Kubernetes applications. A Kubernetes application doesn’t just run on Kubernetes; it’s composed and managed in Kubernetes terms. Operators add application-specific operational knowledge to a Kubernetes cluster, making it easier to automate complex, stateful applications and to augment the platform. Operators can coordinate application upgrades seamlessly, react to failures automatically, and streamline repetitive maintenance like backups. Think of Operators as site reliability engineers in software. They work by extending the Kubernetes control plane and API, helping systems integrators, cluster administrators, and application developers reliably deploy and manage key services and components. Using real-world examples, authors Jason Dobies and Joshua Wood demonstrate how to use Operators today and how to create Operators for your applications with the Operator Framework and SDK. Learn how to establish a Kubernetes cluster and deploy an Operator Examine a range of Operators from usage to implementation Explore the three pillars of the Operator Framework: the Operator SDK, the Operator Lifecycle Manager, and Operator Metering Build Operators from the ground up using the Operator SDK Build, package, and run an Operator in development, testing, and production phases Learn how to distribute your Operator for installation on Kubernetes clusters

Abstract: If you’re among the Python developers put off by Asyncio’s complexity, it’s time to take another look. Asyncio is complicated because it aims to solve problems in concurrent network programming for both framework developers and end-user developers like you. The features you need to consider are a small subset of the whole Asyncio API, but picking out the right features is the tricky part. That’s where this practical book comes in. Veteran Python developer Caleb Hattingh helps end-user developers gain a basic understanding of Asyncio’s building blocks—enough to get you started writing simple event-based programs. You’ll learn why Asyncio offers a safer alternative to preemptive multitasking (threading) and how this API provides a simple way to support thousands of simultaneous socket connections. Get a critical comparison of Asyncio and threading for concurrent network programming Take an Asyncio walkthrough, including a quickstart guide to help you hit the ground looping with event-based programming Learn the difference between Asyncio features for end-user developers and those for framework developers Understand Asyncio’s new async/await language syntax, including coroutines and task and future APIs Get detailed case studies (with code) of some popular Asyncio-compatible third-party libraries

Abstract: This book presents a new approach to risk management that enables executives to think systematically and strategically about future risks and deal proactively with threats to their competitive advantages in an ever more volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous world. Organizations typically manage risks through traditional tools such as insurance and risk mitigation; some employ enterprise risk management, which looks at risk holistically throughout the organization. But these tools tend to focus organizational attention on past actions and compliance. Executives need to tackle risk head-on as an integral part of their strategic planning process, not by looking in the rearview mirror. Strategic Risk Management (SRM) is a forward-looking approach that helps teams anticipate events or exposures that fundamentally threaten or enhance a firm's position. The authors, experts in both business strategy and risk management, define strategic risks and show how they differ from operational risks. They offer a road map that describes architectural elements of SRM (knowledge, principles, structures, and tools) to show how leaders can integrate them to effectively design and implement a future-facing SRM program. SRM gives organizations a competitive advantage over those stuck in outdated risk management practices. For the first time, it enables them to look squarely out the front windshield.

Abstract: Can a system ever truly be considered reliable if it isn't fundamentally secure? In two previous O'Reilly books, experts from Google showed how reliability is fundamental to service design. Site Reliability Engineering and The Site Reliability Workbook demonstrated how and why a commitment to the entire service lifecycle enables organizations to successfully build, deploy, monitor, and maintain software systems. Security is also crucial to the design and operation of scalable systems in production, as it plays an important part in product quality, performance, reliability, and availability. In a world where most products are connected to the internet, and with cloud technologies and machine learning becoming more prevalent, enabling security by default is increasingly important. Abstract: Unleash your entrepreneurial spirit with a counterintuitive approach to starting your own venture or taking your career to the next level Start Before You’re Ready offers entrepreneurs an inspiring new roadmap to success — one that runs against nearly everything you’ve ever been taught about business. Author Mick Spencer is living proof that success doesn’t always rest down the traditional path of formal education and deep pockets. At the age of 22, with nothing to his name, he founded ONTHEGO Custom Apparel (www.otgcustom.com), a customised apparel and uniform company. Since then he has built a worldwide network of movers and shakers and raised millions in venture capital. His company is now a multi-million-dollar player on the international stage, disrupting the slow-moving industry with a modern blend of technological disruptions and social responsibility. In this book, he presents a solid case that analysis paralysis and endless ‘preparation’ won’t get you anywhere — you have to take that leap and do what you really want to do. Indeed, start before you’re ready. Spencer challenges you to get outside your comfort zone and, although intimidating, his approach forces you to learn ‘on the go’ and focus on what you can do rather than what you can’t. Engrossing personal anecdotes coach you through the frustrations and challenges, while vital tools and clear strategies give you a concrete plan for making every day count, many of which have been taught to Mick by billionaires, global CEO’s and highly sought after founders. Chart your own path to success — even without a university degree or financial assets Focus on what you can do right now to achieve your goals Master self-reliance, overcome adversity and discover your true purpose Learn positive habits and build confidence to overcome challenges Starting your own venture or pushing the boundaries in your career is always a leap of faith. It’s saying ‘yes’ before figuring out how to deliver. It’s moments of self-doubt followed by fiery adventurousness and courageous optimism. You are at once inspired, vulnerable, motivated and proud — and you are capable of extraordinary things. Start Before You’re Ready equips you with the inspiration and practical advice you need to succeed in today’s entrepreneurial environment.

Abstract: Neural architecture search (NAS) is a promising research direction that has the potential to replace expert-designed networks with learned, task-specific architectures. Ameet Talwalkar (Carnegie Mellon University Determined AI) shares work that aims to help ground the empirical results in this field and proposes new NAS baselines that build off the following observations: NAS is a specialized hyperparameter optimization problem, and random search is a competitive baseline for hyperparameter optimization. Leveraging these observations, Ameet evaluates both random search with early-stopping and a novel random search with a weight-sharing algorithm on two standard NAS benchmarks: PTB and CIFAR-10. Results show that random search with early-stopping is a competitive NAS baseline that performs at least as well as ENAS, a leading NAS method, on both benchmarks. Additionally, random search with weight-sharing outperforms random search with early-stopping, achieving a state-of-the-art NAS result on PTB and a highly competitive result on CIFAR-10. Ameet concludes by exploring existing reproducibility issues for published NAS results, noting the lack of source material needed to exactly reproduce these results, and discussing the robustness of published results given the various sources of variability in NAS experimental setups. All information (code, random seeds, documentation) needed to exactly reproduce our results will be shared, along with random search with weight-sharing results for each benchmark on two independent experimental runs. This session was recorded at the 2019 O'Reilly Artificial Intelligence Conference in New York.

Abstract: If you’re considering Kubernetes, you’ve probably thought about the potential time and cost savings you could stand to gain. At Gannett and USA TODAY, migrating to Kubernetes cut their daily infrastructure spend in half and reduced their network failover time from almost four hours to about 10 minutes. These are huge savings for any company. That said, there were a number of costs to migrating that they didn't anticipate. Gannett’s migration to Kubernetes had a ripple effect through its entire stack—from its CI pipelines to its approach to monitoring and even employee happiness. In this case study, Bridget Lane, Gannett’s manager of developer solutions, details the problems her team faced while migrating and explain how they dealt with them. Recorded on September 19, 2019. Abstract: During the past decade, significant advancements in artificial intelligence and machine learning have expanded how we communicate and interact with the world. There are more screens and devices in our lives, but our ability to control these devices hasn’t kept pace. While controversial projects involving invasive brain-machine interfaces have been grabbing headlines, this technology is still decades away from exiting the lab and changing how we interact with the digital world for the better. Patrick Kaifosh outlines a future where we’ll be looking up at the world instead of down at our phones. With the launch of the CTRL-labs developer kit (CTRL-kit), noninvasive neural interfaces are finally here, and the possibilities are almost limitless. This session was recorded at the 2019 O'Reilly Artificial Intelligence Conference in New York.

Abstract: Transform Your Organization by Scaling Leadership How do senior leaders, in their own words, describe the most effective leaders—the ones that get results, grow the business, enhance the culture and leave in their wake a trail of other really effective leaders? Conversely, how do senior leaders describe the kind of leader that undercuts the organization’s capacity and capability to create its future? This book, based on groundbreaking research, shows how senior leaders describe and develop leadership that works, that does not, that scales, and that limits scale. Is your leadership built for scale as you advance in today’s volatile, uncertain, dynamic, and disruptive business environment? This context puts a premium on a very particular kind of leadership— High-Creative leadership capable of rapidly growing the organization while simultaneously transforming it into more agile, innovative, adaptive and engaging workplace. The research presented in this book suggests that senior leaders can describe the High-Creative leadership with surprising clarity. They also describe with equal precision the High-Reactive leadership that cancels itself out and seriously limits scale. Which type of leader are you? You scale your leadership by increasing the multiple on your leadership in three ways. First, by developing the strengths that differentiate the most effective leaders from the strengths deployed by the most Reactive and ineffective leaders. And second, by increasing your leadership ratio—the ratio of most the effective strengths to the most damaging liabilities. Third, by developing High-Creative leaders all around you. Scaling Leadership provides a proven framework for magnifying agile and scalable leadership in your organization. Scalable leadership drives forward-momentum by multiplying high-achieving leaders at scale so that growth, productivity and innovation increase exponentially. Creative leaders multiply their strengths beyond technical competence by leading in deep relationship, with radical humanity, passion and integrity. Drawing upon decades of solid research and experience enhancing individual capability and collective leadership effectiveness with Fortune 500 companies and government agencies, the authors provide an innovative and efficient framework to help you: Take stock of your own personal balance of leadership strengths and weaknesses Scale your leadership in deep relationship and high integrity Proliferate high-achievers throug...

Abstract: “Ninety-five percent of the words are spent extolling the benefits of ‘modularity’ and that little, if anything, is said about how to achieve it”—Glenford J. Myers, 1978. The above quote is 40 years old. Today, four decades later, nothing has changed except terminology. Time to fix this. Vladik Khononov (Invesus Group) explains how to decompose a system into loosely coupled components: how to draw boundaries between services, how to decide whether some logic belongs to one service or another, and how domain-driven design can help us make those decisions. Finally, he takes a stab at answering the age-old question of what part of a microservice should be “micro” and how it can be measured. You’ll hear about neither Docker nor Kubernetes. Actually, nothing related to infrastructure. Instead, you’ll dive into the difference between microservices and bounded contexts, discover when each pattern should be used, and get takeaways from Vladik’s experience optimizing microservices-quotebased architectures at Naxex. This session was recorded at the 2019 O'Reilly Software Architecture Conference in San Jose.

Abstract: There’s been a lot of talk about software ownership—but what does “owning code in production” really mean for developers day to day? Many development teams still reach for logs in production as the most familiar way to bridge the development environment with production. Christine Yen (Honeycomb) makes the case that observability—and the skills to craft the right graphs and read them—benefits developers more than it does operators by examining several instances where well-informed devs can supercharge their development process, such as data-driven product decisions (or how to know more about what needs to be done than your PM), rewrites and migrations, feature flags and testing in production, and fine-grained performance analysis. Then, she lays out a series of steps to get your team from grepping unstructured text logs to outputting and analyzing well-structured traces. Instrumentation and observability aren’t all-or-nothing endeavors, and you’ll leave with an idea of the next step you can take to improve your ability to understand your production systems. This session was recorded at the 2019 O'Reilly Velocity Conference in San Jose.

Abstract: See how Domain-Driven Design (DDD) combines with Jakarta EE MicroProfile or Spring Boot to offer a complete suite for building enterprise-grade applications. In this book you will see how these all come together in one of the most efficient ways to develop complex software, with a particular focus on the DDD process. Practical Domain-Driven Design in Enterprise Java starts by building out the Cargo Tracker reference application as a monolithic application using the Jakarta EE platform. By doing so, you will map concepts of DDD (bounded contexts, language, and aggregates) to the corresponding available tools (CDI, JAX-RS, and JPA) within the Jakarta EE platform. Once you have completed the monolithic application, you will walk through the complete conversion of the monolith to a microservices-based architecture, again mapping the concepts of DDD and the corresponding available tools within the MicroProfile platform (config, discovery, and fault tolerance). To finish this section, you will examine the same microservices architecture on the Spring Boot platform. The final set of chapters looks at what the application would be like if you used the CQRS and event sourcing patterns. Here you’ll use the Axon framework as the base framework. What You Will Learn Discover the DDD architectural principles and use the DDD design patterns Use the new Eclipse Jakarta EE platform Work with the Spring Boot framework Implement microservices design patterns, including context mapping, logic design, entities, integration, testing, and security Carry out event sourcing Apply CQRS Who This Book Is For Junior developers intending to start working on enterprise Java; senior developers transitioning from monolithic- to microservices-based architectures; and architects transitioning to a DDD philosophy of building applications.

Abstract: Make your websites more dynamic by adding a feedback form, creating a private area where members can upload images that are automatically resized, or perhaps storing all your content in a database. David Powers has updated his definitive book to incorporate the latest techniques and changes to PHP, including the arrival of PHP 7. New features include the spaceship and null coalesce operators, generators, using array shorthand syntax for list(), array dereferencing, and array unpacking with the splat operator. The problem is, you're not a programmer and the thought of writing code sends a chill up your spine. Or maybe you've dabbled a bit in PHP and MySQL, but you can't get past baby steps. If this describes you, then you've just found the right book. PHP and the MySQL database are deservedly the most popular combination for creating dynamic websites. They're free, easy to use, and provided by many web hosting companies in their standard packages. This book also covers MariaDB, a seamless replacement for MySQL that has been adopted on many web servers. Unfortunately, most PHP books either expect you to be an expert already or force you to go through endless exercises of little practical value. In contrast, this book gives you real value right away through a series of practical examples that you can incorporate directly into your sites, optimizing performance and adding functionality such as file uploading, email feedback forms, image galleries, content management systems, and much more. Each solution is created with not only functionality in mind, but also visual design. But this book doesn't just provide a collection of ready-made scripts: each PHP solution builds on what's gone before, teaching you the basics of PHP and database design quickly and painlessly. By the end of the book, you'll have the confidence to start writing your own scripts or—if you prefer to leave that task to others—to adapt existing scripts to your own requirements. Right from the start, you're shown how easy it is to protect your sites by adopting secure coding practices. What You Will Learn Design and build dynamic PHP-based web sites and applications Get started right away through practical examples that you can reuse Incorporate PHP 7 elements including new ways of handling arrays Work with the latest PHP 7 techniques, innovations, and best practices Who This Book Is For Readers should have at least some prior exposure to web development using PHP.

Abstract: ABC News anchor Dion Lim’s empowering workplace communication strategies for women in any industry “As women, we’re constantly told to speak up, lean in, and be a badass . . . We absolutely should. We must! But we have to execute these things in the right way.” In a fast-paced world where opportunities appear- and shift- at a moment’s notice, how you communicate can, quite simply, make or break your career. Your work environment today includes a diverse array of people and personalities. The ability to interact with all of them, think on your feet, and grab a good opportunity when it’s facing you is the special sauce that will help you achieve your goals. Dion Lim has seen it all. As an Asian-American woman in the hyper-competitive, white- and male-dominated business of TV news, her career path required a powerful blend of street smarts, determination, and a willingness to learn from mistakes – all of which she learned on the job. Today, she’s an ABC anchor in one of the biggest cities in the country. In Make Your Moment, Dion guides you through what she has learned on the career battlefield and what it means for other working women today. She’ll take you through the treacherous--and often entertaining--landscape of the modern workplace, covering virtually every situation you’re likely to experience. From the art of thinking quickly on your feet to #MeToo moments, you’ll learn how to master office politics, make online/social media dynamics ( good and bad ) work for you, and thrive under pressure. Dion learned how to stay true to herself, so she could find her moment and make it, rising from a local reporter to the national stage. Now it’s your turn.
