    Abstract: Football and Fascism. The Politics of Popular Culture in Portugal tells the hidden history of football and discusses its political, social and cultural foundations, during the longest running authoritarian regime in Europe. Theoretically grounded on Bourdieu's field theory, and using a multi-scalar methodology, this award-winning research explores the political tensions between the nationalization of sports envisaged by the Portuguese "New State" and the integration of national football in a globalized urban popular culture. Mobilizing unexplored archival sources, and a wide array of primary materials, this groundbreaking work offers new insight on the administrative structures of the corporativist state, the making of an authoritarian cultural program, and the relation between state institutions and civil society. Besides broadening the scope of existing transnational histories of football, this study also puts into question the conventional geographies and political chronologies adopted in sports history. For his oustanding research, Rahul Kumar won the 2015 "Mário Soares Award - EDP Foundation" for best work in Portuguese history by researchers under 35 and received an honourable mention, also in 2015, in the "CES Award for Young Portuguese speaking Social Scientists", attributed by the Centre for Social Studies of Coimbra University

    Abstract: This multidisciplinary volume offers unique perspectives, across the globe and throughout the centuries, on the complexity of the nexus between work and the life course. For industrialized regions, from Germany and Western Europe to China and Japan, it questions the widespread notion of an overall growing working life course instability, since the 1970s. For unindustrialized or industrializing regions, from West Africa to state socialist East Central Europe, as well as for transnational and transcontinental labour migrations, it shows the enormous influence of the extended family and wider kin on individual pathways into and out of work. For early modern Europe, India, and China, and up to twentieth-century state socialism and to current welfare states, it stresses and concretizes the crucial impact of age and gender for both societal labour relations and individual work-related decision making. With all chapters based on original research, the volume reflects a close cooperation between historians, anthropologists, and sociologists. Its multidisciplinary approach finds expression in its methodological plurality, reaching from archival research and sophisticated statistical analyses to biographical interviews and participant observation. This mix allows to grasp the interaction between societal change and individual agency

    Abstract: This multi-disciplinary volume is one of the few collections about social change covering various cases of mass violence and genocide. In life under persecution, social relations and social structures were not absent and not simply replaced by an ethno-racial order. The studies in this book show the influence of social structures like gender, age and class on life under persecution. Exploring practices in family and labor relations and of collective action, they counter claims of an atomization of society or total uprootedness of victims. Despite being exposed to poverty and want and under the permanent threat of political violence, persecuted people tried to develop their own agency. Case studies are about the Jewish and Armenian persecutions, Rwanda, the war of decolonization in Mozambique and civilian refuges in Belarus during World War II. The authors are a mix of experienced scholars and young researchers

    Abstract: Between working men and women (which may include "free" wage earners, chattel slaves, indentured labourers, sharecroppers, domestic servants, and many others) and those employing them, there has always been a constant - mostly silent but sometimes overt - struggle concerning employers' discretionary power and over the interpretation of formal and informal rules. There is a constantly shifting frontier of control, that is, an ongoing struggle for control in the workplace, with managers and supervisors trying to increase their power over their subordinates, and their subordinates, in reaction, trying to maintain and increase their relative autonomy. The detailed case studies in this volume span three centuries and cover different parts of the world. Still, they speak to each other in many ways, highlighting the fact that power at work, whether on the shopfloor or beyond, results from a wide range of complex interrelations. Between technological innovations and the ways in which they are actually implemented. Between the division of labour at the site of production or service provision and changing standards of social segmentation beyond the premises of the company, which can be reinforced - or weakened - by management strategies of utilizing labour power as well as workers' reaction to these strategies. And finally, between politics in production, which shape the relations between capital and labour on the shopfloor, and state politics of production, which cannot be understood without reference to broader developments in economy and society

Is there a new quality of relations between Jews and non-Jews, despite or precisely because of the Holocaust trauma? How is the memory of the extermination of 6 million European Jews reflected in memorial events and literature, film, drama, and visual arts media? To what degree do European Jews feel as integrated people, as Europeans per see, and as safe citizens? An interdisciplinary team of historians, cultural anthropologists, sociologists, and literary theorists answers these questions for Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Germany. They show that the Holocaust has become an enduring topic in public among Jews and non-Jews. However, Jews in Europe work self-confidently on their future on the "old continent," new alliances, and in cooperation with a broad network of civil forces. Non-Jewish interest in Jewish history and the present has significantly increased over decades, and networks combatting anti-Semitism have strengthened

    Abstract: Wie kam es dazu, dass das als Technikmuseum gegründete Deutsche Bergbau-Museum Bochum (DBM) heute neben weiteren Sammlungsbereichen auch über eine Sammlung von Gemälden, Grafiken und Plastiken verfügt? Der Frage nach der Genese und der historischen Funktion dieser Kunstsammlung spürt das Buch anhand der Institutions- und Sammlungsgeschichte des Hauses nach. Dabei liegt der Fokus auf den Motiven und Handlungen der Akteur:innen des Museums in der Amtszeit des Gründungsdirektors, Dr.-Ing. Dr. h. c. Heinrich Winkelmann (1928-1966). Schriftliche Überlieferungen zeigen, dass Winkelmann sich berufen fühlte, regulierend in die Kunstszene einzugreifen. Anhand von Sammlungs- und Archivforschung wird deshalb außerdem untersucht, welche Positionen der Gründungsdirektor in Hinblick auf die Ikonografie von Bergleuten in der bildenden Kunst vertrat und inwiefern sich seine kulturpolitischen Bemühungen in der heutigen Kunst-Sammlung des DBM materialisiert haben

    Abstract: Die Industriefotografie, wie man sie kennt, präsentiert Maschinen und gewaltige Anlagen der Großindustrie, den arbeitenden Menschen aber meist nur in Gruppen oder für einen Größenvergleich der beeindruckenden Produktionsmaschinerie. Der Alltag industrieller Auftragsfotografie in mittelständischen produzierenden Unternehmen sah anders aus. Am Beispiel hannoverscher Konsumgüterfirmen zeigt die Autorin, welche Bedeutung die Fotos der Beschäftigten – ungelernte Arbeiterinnen und selbstbewusste Fachkräfte – für das Selbstverständnis der Unternehmen und für ihre Außendarstellung hatten, wie sich die Bildkonzepte unterschieden und im Lauf der Jahrzehnte veränderten. Die Mitarbeiter/-innen waren dabei keine Randfiguren. Informationen zum Arbeitsvorgang und zum historischen Kontext aus Archivrecherche, Werkszeitungen und Zeitzeugeninterviews begleiten die Aufnahmen. Die Arbeit füllt mit dem Blick auf die Auftragsfotografie mittelständischer Konsumgüterfabrikanten eine Leerstelle in der Literatur zur Industriefotografie.

    Abstract: Antisemitismus war in der DDR, die als antifaschistischer Staat begründet wurde, per se nicht artikulierbar und scheinbar auch nicht vorhanden. Als Element faschistischer Ideologie galt Antisemitismus als überwunden. Dagegen gehörte der politisch instrumentalisierte Antizionismus, der Israel als Feindstaat definierte, jahrelang zur Staatsdoktrin. Die Folgen des negativen Israelbildes sind bis heute spürbar. Vor dem Hintergrund einer neu auflebenden Fremdenfeindlichkeit ist es geboten, die Traditionen und Wirkungen judenfeindlicher Ressentiments in der DDR in den Blick zu nehmen.     Abstract: In diesem Buch fasst Wolfgang Benz Erkenntnisse aus seiner langjährigen Beschäftigung mit Antisemitismus und den Folgen zusammen. Ohne gelehrte Attitüde, aber mit aller wissenschaftlichen Akribie und Sorgfalt bündelt er die gewonnenen Einsichten. Judenfeindschaft aus unterschiedlichen Motiven gipfelte unter nationalsozialistischer Ideologie im 20. Jh. im Völkermord. Der Judenhass lebte fort, daneben entstand nach dem Holocaust ein mit neuen Argumenten operierender Antisemitismus, der Scham- und Schuldgefühlen entspringt. Der oft beschworene „neue Antisemitismus“ ist dagegen nichts anderes als die monotone Judenfeindschaft mit ihren Stereotypen, Legenden, Unterstellungen und Schuldzuweisungen, die sich in Jahrhunderten entwickelt hat. Antisemitismus ist ein zentrales Element des Rechtsextremismus, aber er kommt aus der Mitte der Gesellschaft. Doch nicht nur Judenhasser bieten Anlass zur Sorge. „Islamkritiker“ denunzieren pauschal alle Muslime als Judenfeinde und Überengagierte versuchen, Antisemitismus auf die Haltung gegenüber Israel zu verengen und beziehen in ihr Verdikt jede kritische Haltung zur israelischen Politik mit ein. Objektive Kriterien, was Antisemitismus ist, wie er sich historisch entfaltete, in welchen Formen er vorkommt, wie Judenfeindschaft von Israelkritik abzugrenzen ist, sind für eine differenzierte Betrachtung unentbehrlich. Immer öfter aber erheben Aktivisten und Interessierte aus Medien und Politik den Antisemitismus-Vorwurf und fordern lautstark Deutungshoheit ein. Meinungsstärke, Durchschlagskraft und die Verortung im richtigen Lager siegen über differenzierende Analyse und abwägendes Urteil - so geschehen in der Debatte um das Jüdische Museum Berlin, die BDS-Bewegung oder den südafrikanischen Gelehrten Achille Mbembe. Der Eindruck entsteht, dass der "israelbezogene Antisemitismus" Kern des Problems sei und die Hauptschuld am Antisemitismus von der radikalen Rechten auf die Kritiker israelischer Politik - oder auch auf "die Muslime" - abgewälzt werden soll. Und nicht wenige ziehen es vor, von allem, was mit Juden zu tun hat, die Finger zu lassen, weil man sie sich verbrennen könnte. Er stellt die Strategien der Ausgrenzung der "Anderen" und "Fremden" ebenso dar, wie die Entstehungsgeschichte unterschiedlicher rassistischer Diskurse wie Antisemitismus oder Ethnopluralismus. Die Ideologien werden an ihren Schlüsselbegriffen ("Abendland"), ihren Phrasen ("Lügenpresse") und ihren Hassobjekten ("Kopftuchmädchen") kenntlich gemacht. Ein Kapitel widmet sich ausführlich der Geschichte und den wesentlichen Akteuren des rechten Spektrums, von den Altnazis bis zur AfD, von Frey (DVU) zu Kubitschek. Abschliessend wirft der Autor noch einen Blick auf bekannte Exzesse rassistischer Gewalt. - Vom Titel her hätte man sich noch eine etwas vertieftere Analyse des tatsächlich alltäglichen Rassismus gewünscht, der vor allem in Ressentiments oder Abwertung fremder Kulturen zum Ausdruck kommt.     Abstract: "El intelectual y la cultura de masas, by Javier García Liendo, studies the responses of Ángel Rama (Uruguay) and Jose María Arguedas (Peru) to the effects of mass culture on Andean indigenous cultures and Latin American print culture during the second half of the twentieth century. It explores the part that Rama and Arguedas played in the conceptualization and promotion of new cultural spaces made possible by commodification and industrialization, as capitalism transformed the imaginaries and materialities that had shaped their cultural projects for Andean and Latin American cultures. Through a material analysis of print culture objects, in particular those resulting from Rama's editorial ventures--such as pocket paperbacks and a popular encyclopedia--this work examines the transformations occurring at the time in Latin America at the level of production and circulation of culture, and thus sheds light on the emergence of new networks of communication between intellectuals and national and regional publics. Similarly, it explores the role of emergent communication technologies (sound recording and radio) in the reshaping of rural indigenous cultures into a mass-oriented popular culture in Peru. In this context, Arguedas's work with folklore and his later involvement in the Andean popular music scene in Lima are studied as responses to a violent process of commercialization of traditional Andean musical culture, a result of mass migration from rural areas to cities and urbanization"--Provided by publisher

    Abstract: "Between 1870 and 1940, life expectancy in the United States skyrocketed while the percentage of senior citizens age sixty-five and older more than doubled--a phenomenon owed largely to innovations in medicine and public health. At the same time, the Great Depression was a major tipping point for age discrimination and poverty in the West: seniors were living longer and retiring earlier, but without adequate means to support themselves and their families. The economic disaster of the 1930s alerted scientists, who were actively researching the processes of aging, to the profound social implications of their work--and by the end of the 1950s, the field of gerontology emerged. Old Age, New Science explores how a group of American and British life scientists contributed to gerontology's development as a multidisciplinary field. It examines the foundational "biosocial visions" they shared, a byproduct of both their research and the social problems they encountered. Hyung Wook Park shows how these visions shaped popular discourses on aging, directly influenced the institutionalization of gerontology, and also reflected the class, gender, and race biases of their founders"--

    Abstract: "Celso Thomas Castilho offers original perspectives on the political upheaval surrounding the process of slave emancipation in postcolonial Brazil. He shows how the abolition debates in Pernambuco transformed the practices of political citizenship and marked the first instance of a mass national political mobilization. In addition, he presents new findings on the scope and scale of the opposing abolitionist and sugar planters' mobilizations in the Brazilian northeast. The book highlights the extensive interactions between enslaved and free people in the construction of abolitionism, and reveals how Brazil's first social movement reinvented discourses about race and nation, leading to the passage of the abolition law in 1888. It also documents the previously ignored counter-mobilizations led by the landed elite, who saw the rise of abolitionism as a political contestation and threat to their livelihood. Overall, this study illuminates how disputes over control of emancipation also entailed disputes over the boundaries of the political arena and connects the history of abolition to the history of Brazilian democracy. It offers fresh perspectives on Brazilian political history and on Brazil's place within comparative discussions on slavery and emancipation"--

Through an array of archival sources, Anna Rose Alexander argues that fire became a catalyst for social change, as residents mobilized to confront the problem. Advances in engineering and medicine soon fostered the rise of distinct fields of fire-related expertise while conversely, the rise of fire-profiteering industries allowed entrepreneurs to capitalize on crisis.     Abstract: Between 1880 and 1922, the coal fields of southern West Virginia witnessed two bloody and protracted strikes, the formation of two competing unions, and the largest armed conflict in American labor history--a week-long battle between 20,000 coal miners and 5,000 state police, deputy sheriffs, and mine guards. These events resulted in an untold number of deaths, indictments of over 550 coal miners for insurrection and treason, and four declarations of martial law. Corbin argues that these violent events were collective and militant acts of aggression interconnected and conditioned by decades of oppression. His study goes a long way toward breaking down the old stereotypes of Appalachian and coal mining culture. This second edition contains a new preface and afterword by author David A. Corbin

These events resulted in an untold number of deaths, indictments of over 550 coal miners for insurrection and treason, and four declarations of martial law. Corbin argues that these violent events were collective and militant acts of aggression interconnected and conditioned by decades of oppression. His study goes a long way toward breaking down the old stereotypes of Appalachian and coal mining culture. This second edition contains a new preface and afterword by author David A. Corbin

    Abstract: "Urban Villages and Local Identities examines immigration to the Great Plains by surveying the experiences of three divergent ethnic groups--Volga Germans, Omaha Indians, and Vietnamese--that settled in enclaves in Lincoln, Nebraska, beginning in 1876, 1941, and 1975, respectively. These urban villages served as safe havens that protected new arrivals from a mainstream that often eschewed unfamiliar cultural practices. Lincoln's large Volga German population was last fully discussed in 1918; Omahas are rarely studied as urban people although sixy-five percent of their population lives in cities; and the growing body of work on Vietnamese tends to be conducted by social scientists rather than historians, few of whom contrast Southeast Asian experiences with those of earlier waves of immigration. As a comparative study, Urban Villages and Local Identities is inspired, in part, by Reinventing Free Labor, by Gunther Peck. By focusing on the experiences of three populations over the course of 130 years, Urban Villages connects two distinct eras of international border crossing and broadens the field of immigration to include Native Americans. Der Judenhass lebte fort, daneben entstand nach dem Holocaust ein mit neuen Argumenten operierender Antisemitismus, der Scham- und Schuldgefühlen entspringt.     Abstract: "Beset by the forces of European colonialism, US imperialism, and neoliberalism, the people of the Antilles have had good reasons to band together politically and economically, yet not all Dominicans, Haitians, and Puerto Ricans have heeded the calls for collective action. So what has determined whether Antillean solidarity movements fail or succeed? In this comprehensive new study, Alai Reyes-Santos argues that the crucial factor has been the extent to which Dominicans, Haitians, and Puerto Ricans imagine each other as kin. Our Caribbean Kin considers three key moments in the region's history: the nineteenth century, when the Antillanismo movement sought to throw off the yoke of colonial occupation; the 1930s, at the height of the region's struggles with US imperialism; and the past thirty years, as neoliberal economic and social policies have encroached upon the islands. At each moment, the book demonstrates, specific tropes of brotherhood, marriage, and lineage have been mobilized to construct political kinship among Antilleans, while racist and xenophobic discourses have made it difficult for them to imagine themselves as part of one big family. Recognizing the wide array of contexts in which Antilleans learn to affirm or deny kinship, Reyes-Santos draws from a vast archive of media, including everything from canonical novels to political tracts, historical newspapers to online forums, sociological texts to local jokes. Such moves are driven by a very realistic set of calculations: in 2010 the collective revenue of the fifteen highest-grossing teams in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) topped one billion dollars, a hefty figure that does not even take into account the revenue generated by the sales of university-related apparel and athletic gear. Expressions of team allegiance, particularly the display of sports mascots, are a visual expression of this American obsession with collegiate sport. In American Spectacle, historian Jennifer Guiliano investigates the role of sports mascots in the big business of American college football in order to connect mascotry to twentieth-century expressions of community identity, individual belonging, stereotyped imagery, and cultural hegemony. Glenn Penny bring together a set of highly recognized junior and senior scholars, including indigenous scholars, from a variety of fields to provoke critical thinking about the many ways in which individuals and social groups construct and display unique identities around the world. The case studies in Performing Indigeneity underscore the social, historical, and immediate contextual factors at play when indigenous people make decisions about when, how, why, and who can "be" indigenous in public spaces. Performing Indigeneity invites readers to consider how groups and individuals think about performance and display and focuses attention on the ways that public spheres, both indigenous and nonindigenous ones, have received these performances.     Abstract: "Racial Blackness and the Discontinuity of Western Modernity is the unfinished manuscript of Lindon Barrett, who died tragically and unexpectedly in 2008. John Carlos Rowe has assembled the completed chapters, and provides an introduction that offers some background and context for the writings. The project offers a genealogy of how the development of racial blackness within the mercantile capitalist system of Euro-American colonial imperialism was constitutive of Western modernity. Barrett explores the complex transnational systems of economic transactions and political exchanges foundational to the formation of modern subjectivities. In particular, he traces the embodied and significatory violence involved in the development of modern nations, and characterizes that time of nation-building as one which created unprecedented individual and communal detachments, facilitating the exclusion of racialized subjects from modern understandings of what it means to be human, or a subject. Ranging from an analysis of the mass commodity markets that were created by colonial economic expansion and which relied on the decimation of populations of indigenous people unsuitable for exploitation as well as the transport and sale of enslaved African workers, to literacy and the autobiography The Interesting Life of Olaudah Equiano or Gustavus Vassa, The African, Written by Himself, to later legal and literary texts, the work masterfully connects historical systems of racial slavery to postenlightenment modernity, and will be pathbreaking in a number of fields"--...
