    Abstract: In the 1920s an international team of scientists and miners unearthed the richest evidence of human evolution the world had ever seen: Peking Man. After the communist revolution of 1949, Peking Man became a prominent figure in the movement to bring science to the people. In a new state with twin goals of crushing “superstition” and establishing a socialist society, the story of human evolution was the first lesson in Marxist philosophy offered to the masses. At the same time, even Mao’s populist commitment to mass participation in science failed to account for the power of popular culture—represented most strikingly in legends about the Bigfoot-like Wild Man—to reshape ideas about human nature. The People’s Peking Man is a skilled social history of twentieth-century Chinese paleoanthropology and a compelling cultural—and at times comparative—history of assumptions and debates about what it means to be human. By focusing on issues that push against the boundaries of science and politics, The People’s Peking Man offers an innovative approach to modern Chinese history and the history of science

    Abstract: This book traces the origins and early development of what are today loosely termed Britain's Overseas Information Services. It examines how, at the end of the First World War, the British government came to forfeit the considerable lead it had established in propaganda since 1914, and the reasons why it had gradually to re-enter the field during the inter-war years as a direct response to totalitarianism. It surveys the pioneering work of the Foreign Office News Department and its important press office, the commercial propaganda conducted by the Empire Marketing Board and the Travel Association, the foundation and rapid peacetime growth of the British Council to conduct 'cultural diplomacy', and the beginning of the BBC's World Service with the inauguration of foreign-language broadcasts in 1938

    Abstract: The Straight State is the most expansive study of the federal regulation of homosexuality yet written. Unearthing startling new evidence from the National Archives, Margot Canaday shows how the state systematically came to penalize homosexuality, giving rise to a regime of second-class citizenship that sexual minorities still live under today. Canaday looks at three key arenas of government control--immigration, the military, and welfare--and demonstrates how federal enforcement of sexual norms emerged with the rise of the modern bureaucratic state. She begins at the turn of the twentieth century when the state first stumbled upon evidence of sex and gender nonconformity, revealing how homosexuality was policed indirectly through the exclusion of sexually "degenerate" immigrants and other regulatory measures aimed at combating poverty, violence, and vice. Canaday argues that the state's gradual awareness of homosexuality intensified during the later New Deal and through the postwar period as policies were enacted that explicitly used homosexuality to define who could enter the country, serve in the military, and collect state benefits.     Abstract: A much discussed question in classical studies is the comparison between the situation of poets in Augustan Rome and that of artists and intellectuals in the totalitarian regimes of the twentieth century. As instructive as this question proves to be for an understanding of the relation between the freedom of art and thinking on the one hand and power on the other, it also reveals the insufficiency of our present grasp of this crucial articulation of our humanity. Jahrhundert hat die erste Frauenbewegung mit der Verankerung eigens Frauen vorbehaltener Bildungs- und Berufsbereiche zur Durchsetzung eines differenzbezogenen Musters der Fraueninklusion beigetragen. In der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts hingegen tritt die zweite Frauenbewegung für ein uneingeschränktes Recht auf Gleichheit ein. Das Buch führt diesen Wandel von Differenz zu Gleichheit auf konstitutive Zusammenhänge zwischen mobilisierungsfähigen Semantiken der Frauenbewegungen und Prozessen der Binnendifferenzierung des politischen Systems zurück. Seit den 1960er Jahren ist mit den modernen Volksparteien ein Staat entstanden, der der Garantie gesellschaftlicher Teilnahmerechte der Gesamtbevölkerung verpflichtet ist. Schichtung verliert als soziale Konfliktlinie an Bedeutung. Erst diese Entwicklung verhilft dem Anspruch der individuellen und sozialen Gleichheit der Geschlechter und dem Muster einer geschlechtsunabhängigen Inklusion zum Durchbruch

    Abstract: In a bold rethinking of the Hollywood blacklist and McCarthyite America, Joseph Litvak reveals a political regime that did not end with the 1950s or even with the Cold War: a regime of compulsory sycophancy, in which the good citizen is an informer, ready to denounce anyone who will not play the part of the earnest, patriotic American. While many scholars have noted the anti-Semitism underlying the House Un-American Activities Committee's (HUAC's) anti-Communism, Litvak draws on the work of Theodor W. Adorno, Hannah Arendt, Alain Badiou, and Max Horkheimer to show how the committee conflated Jewishness with what he calls "comic cosmopolitanism," an intolerably seductive happiness, centered in Hollywood and New York, in show business and intellectual circles. He maintains that HUAC took the comic irreverence of the "uncooperative" witnesses as a crime against an American identity based on self-repudiation and the willingness to "name names"

    Abstract: In der Studie werden Ursachen und Folgen von eugenischen Eingriffen in die reproduktive Kultur unserer Gesellschaft durch die Medizin des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts untersucht. Wissenschaftliche Eingriffe, welche an der Wende zum 21. Jahrhundert biotechnische Selektionen am Lebensbeginn gesellschaftsfähig und zur Aufgabe von Familienbildung gemacht haben.Erkenntnisleitendes Interesse der Studie ist es, normative Idealbilder von Familie, Mutterschaft, Vaterschaft und Kindheit, welche die eugenischen Eingriffe in die gesellschaftliche Organisation der "Reproduktion der Gattung" durch die Medizin hervorgebracht haben, einer geschlechtersensiblen Analyse zu unterziehen und transparent zu machen, wie diese Idealbilder einerseits in die Entwicklung von Biotechniken der Zeugung und Selektion eingearbeitet wurden und wie diese Techniken andererseits wiederum die Familienbildung selbst beeinflussen. Diese Frage wird vor dem Hintergrund der gesellschaftlichen und wissenschaftlichen Entwicklungen analysiert, die den Aufstieg einer eugenischen Vernunft im 20. Jahrhundert begleiteten und möglich machten. Materiale Grundlage der Analyse sind medizinische Fachartikel der "Wiener Klinischen Wochenschrift" der Jahrgänge 1900 - 2000, die im Rahmen eines von der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften (ÖAW) durch ein APART-Stipendium finanziertes Forschungsprojekt erhoben und diskursanalytisch untersucht wurden. Die Untersuchung vermag zu zeigen, welche innerfamiliären Geschlechter- und Generationskonzepte den eugenischen Idealbildern inhärent sind, welche gesellschaftlichen Transformationsprozesse in diese Idealbilder eingearbeitet wurden, wie und wozu Elternschaft und Kindheit naturwissenschaftlich rationalisiert und modernisiert wurden, mit welchen Anforderungen an eine gelingende Erziehung und Bildung Eltern dadurch in den letzten Jahrzehnten zunehmend konfrontiert werden, welche Pflichten im Namen des Kindeswohls daraus für Mütter hervorgehen, weshalb und wozu biotechnische Selektion am Lebensbeginn heute eine allgemeine Einflussgröße von Mutterschaft und Kindheit darstellt und dass die reproduktive Kultur unserer Gesellschaft heute von einer eugenischen Vernunft durchzogen ist.Mit der Forschungsarbeit wird eine weitere Dimension des eugenischen Mainstreams erschlossen, in dem der Focus konsequent auf die wissenschaftliche Neuordnung des gesamten Reproduktionszusammenhanges gesetzt und die Verwissenschaftlichung der reproduktiven Kultur im Kontext der Sozi ...
    Abstract: This is a study about the causes and consequences of the eurgenic intrusions into our society´s reproductive culture by medicine over the course of the twentieth century. By the turn of the twenty-first century, such scientific intrusions through biotechnological selection at the very beginning of a human´s life have become socially acceptable and part of the task of family planning. Of intrinsic interest is the goal of subjecting the normative ideal images of family, motherhood, fatherhood and childhood - which through medical science have advanced eugenic intrusions into the social organization of the species "reproduction" - to a gender-sensitive analysis. This study also highlights how these ideal images are integrated into the development of the biotechnologies of conception and selection, and how these technologies in turn influence familiy planning. The issue are analyzed against the background of social and scientific developments which accompanied and made possible the rise of eugenic rationality in the twentieth century. The sources used for this analysis are medial studies published in the journal Wiener Klinische Wochenschrift between 1900 and 2000; the methodology applied is discourse analysis. The project was financed by a research grant (APART) under the auspices of the Austrian Academy of Science (ÖAW). This research demonstrates: which concepts of gender and generation within the families are inherent to the eugenic ideal images; which social transformation processes were integrated into these ideal images; how and why parenthood and childhood were scientiffically rationalized and modernized; the demands which have increasingly confronted parents over the past decades as regards successful instruction and education; the duties which emanated in the namen of the child´s well-being; and the reasons for which biotechnological selection at the very beginning of human life currently has a sweeping influence on motherhood and childhood. Finally, the study demonstrates that the existing reproductive culture in our society is infused by eugenic rationality. A further investigative dimension of the eugenic mainstream is also developed by virtue of the approach in which the focus consistently points to the scientific reorganization of the entire context of reproduction.     Abstract: During the 1950s and 1960s True Detective magazine developed a new way of narrating and understanding murder. It was more sensitive to context, gave more psychologically sophisticated accounts, and was more willing to make conjectures about the unknown thoughts and motivations of killers than others had been before. This turned out to be the start of a revolution, and, after a century of escalating accounts, we have now become a nation of experts, with many ordinary people able to speak intelligently about blood-spatter patterns and organized vs. disorganized serial killers.

From its working-class roots on the South Side of Chicago, the AACM went on to forge an extensive legacy of cultural and social experimentation, crossing both musical and racial boundaries. The success of individual members and ensembles such as Muhal Richard Abrams, the Art Ensemble of Chicago, and Anthony Braxton has been matched by the enormous influence of the collective itself in inspiring a generation of musical experimentalists. George E. Lewis, who joined the collective as a teenager in 1971, establishes the full importance and vitality of the AACM with this communal history, written with a symphonic sweep that draws on a cross-generational chorus of voices and a rich collection of rare images. Focusing on leaders of the sterilization movement from the 1930's through the turn of the century, this book explores the historic linkages between environment, civil liberties, eugenics, population control, sex education, marriage counseling, and birth control movements in the 20th-century United States. Sterilization has been variously advocated as a medical procedure for defusing the "population bomb," expanding individual rights, liberating women from the fear of pregnancy, strengthening marriage, improving the quality of life of the mentally disabled, or reducing the incidence of hereditary disorders. From an historical standpoint, support for free and unfettered access to sterilization services has aroused opposition in some circles, and was considered a "liberal cause" in post-World War II America. This story demonstrates how a small group of reformers helped to alter traditional notions of gender and sexuality. --From publisher's description

    Abstract: The modern German political song is a hybrid of high and low culture. With its roots in the birth of mass culture in the 1920s, it employs communicative strategies of popular song. Yet its tendencies toward philosophical, poetic, and musical sophistication reveal intellectual aspirations. This volume looks at the influence of revolutionary artistic traditions in the lyrics and music of the 'Liedermacher' of east and west Germany: the rediscovery of the revolutionary songs of 1848 by the 1960s West German folk revival, the use of the profane 'carnivalesque' street-ballad tradition by Wolf Biermann and the GDR duo Wenzel & Mensching, the influence of 1920s artistic experimentation on 'Liedermacher' such as Konstantin Wecker, and the legacy of Hanns Eisler's revolutionary song theory. The book also provides an insider perspective on the countercultural scenes of the two Germanys, examining the conditions in which political songs were written and performed. In view of the decline of the political song form since the fall of communism, the book ends with a look at German avant-garde techno's attempt to create a music that challenges conventional cultural perceptions and attitudes.
