    Abstract: Die Studie versucht eine Bestimmung der nationalen Identität im modernen China anhand der Analyse zwei bedeutender Figuren, des mythischen Urahns, genannt Gelber Kaiser (Huangdi), und des Generals Yue Fei, welcher im 12. Jahrhundert erfolglos gegen Eroberer aus dem Norden gekämpft hat. In der radikal-nationalistischen Phase des ausgehenden Kaiserreiches (1895-1915) etablierten hanchinesische Intellektuelle und Politiker beide Figuren als nationale Symbole im Kampf gegen die mandschurische Fremdherrschaft und nutzten sie dazu, die vormals imperiale Identität in eine nationale Identität zu trans
