    Kurzfassung: This book examines the involvement of African American artists in the New Deal art programs of the 1930s. Emphasizing broader issues informed by the uniqueness of Black experience rather than individual artists' works, Mary Ann Calo makes the case that the revolutionary vision of these federal art projects is best understood in the context of access to opportunity, mediated by the reality of racial segregation.Focusing primarily on the Federal Art Project (FAP) of the Works Progress Administration (WPA), Calo documents African American artists' participation in community art centers in Harlem, in St. Louis, and throughout the South. She examines the internal workings of the Harlem Artists' Guild, the Guild's activities during the 1930s, and its alliances with other groups, such as the Artists' Union and the National Negro Congress. Calo also explores African American artists' representation in the exhibitions sponsored by WPA administrators and the critical reception of their work. In doing so, she elucidates the evolving meanings of the terms race, culture, and community in the interwar era. The book concludes with an essay by Jacqueline Francis on Black artists in the early 1940s, after the end of the FAP program.Presenting essential new archival information and important insights into the experiences of Black New Deal artists, this study expands the factual record and positions the cumulative evidence within the landscape of critical race studies. It will be welcomed by art historians and American studies scholars specializing in early twentieth-century race relations

    Kurzfassung: Since its beginnings in Paris in the mid-19th century, the idea of bohemia, an urban community of artists and intellectuals living outside bourgeois norms, has been a potent trope of artistic identity. It was here that the notion of an unconventional, free-spirited life, precarious yet filled with idealism, was codified and romanticized. Bohemia: History of an Idea, 1950 – 2000 shows the continuities and differences between the scenes and subcultures of the second half of the twentieth century, when the mainstream began to appropriate and thereby erode a way of life predicated on its rejection. Nonetheless, as an alternative to conformity the bohemian idea has exerted an enduring fascination. Through works by 39 artists, including Alice Neel, PeterHujar, John Deakin, David Wojnarowicz, Ed van der Elsken, Robert Frank and Alfred Leslie, William Gedney, Libuše Jarcovjáková, Nan Goldin, Zhang Huan and Wolfgang Tillmans, the publication explores the diversity of expressions in various cities in Europe, North America and Asia and shows that the bohemian idea continues to galvanize and inspire

Parce que le poil est un matériau corporel qui peut être transformé de mille et une manières - étiré, coupé, complété, coloré, orné, caché ou exhibé -, il est un élément essentiel de la mise en scène de soi qui permet d'afficher l'adhésion à une mode, une conviction, une contestation et est porteur de nombreuses significations, telles la féminité, la virilité, la négligence, etc. Quelques noms de coiffures célèbres - à la Fontanges, à la Titus, à la garçonne, à l'iroquoise, etc. - révèlent que les cheveux sont eux aussi l'objet de véritables phénomènes de mode, porteurs de codes sociaux et culturels que les contemporains de chaque époque savent décrypter. De la fin du Moyen Âge à nos jours, ce livre aborde plusieurs thèmes inhérents à l'histoire de la coiffure (cheveux peignés, coupés, ornés ; perruques, postiches, calvitie ; coloration), sans oublier les questions liées à la pilosité faciale (visages imberbes, barbes, moustaches, sourcils) et à la pilosité corporelle (torse, jambes, pubis, aisselles, épilation).     Kurzfassung: Kulturelle Bildung kann maßgeblich die Persönlichkeitsentwicklung von Kindern und Jugendlichen unterstützen. Im Projekt InKuBi wurde ein Indikatorenset entwickelt, mit dem Entwicklungen in diesem Bereich analysiert werden können. Kinder und Jugendliche können sich durch kreatives Gestalten und die aktive Rezeption von Kunst und Kultur unabhängig von ihrem familiären, kulturellen, sozialen und ökonomischen Hintergrund mit der Welt auseinandersetzen. Schon lange fördert der Bund die kulturelle Bildung im Programm „Kultur macht stark". Bisher lagen aber keine belastbaren Daten zum Status quo und zu Entwicklungen im Rahmen des Programms vor. Um mehr Steuerungswissen zu generieren, wurde im Projekt InKuBi ein exemplarisches Indikatorenset entwickelt. Die Indikatoren orientieren sich an der Systematik des nationalen Bildungsberichts und legen den Grundstein für ein Monitoringsystem kultureller Bildung in Deutschland. Die Studie, die von der Stiftung Mercator gefördert wurde, zeigt die Entstehung und die Grundlagen des Indikatorensets sowie die Bedeutung einer datengestützten Gesamtschau für die kulturelle Bildung im Rahmen eines bundesweiten Bildungsmonitorings.

    Kurzfassung: ‘Race Is Everything’ looks at ideas of ‘racial science’ in the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century, and how art was influenced by them. It looks at race in general, but with a particular concentration on attitudes towards and representations of people of African and Jewish descent. David Bindman argues that behind all racial ideas is the belief that outward appearance, and especially skull-shape, can be correlated with inner character and intelligence, and that these could be used to create a seemingly scientific hierarchy of races. This book considers many aspects, including the skull as a racial marker; ancient Egypt as a precedent for Southern slavery; Darwin, race and aesthetics; the ‘Mediterranean race’; the visual aspects of eugenics; and the racial politics of Emil Nolde.

    Kurzfassung: La mostra "Gli ebrei, i Medici e il Ghetto di Firenze" ha un doppio valore, storico e culturale. I secoli di vita del ghetto rappresentano il capitolo centrale della storia della presenza ebraica a Firenze, caratterizzato da norme di segregazione ed al contempo simbolo di una forma di "inclusione" ufficiale nel tessuto civico di Firenze: il ghetto si trovava di fronte al Mercato Vecchio (oggi piazza della Repubblica), allora cuore pulsante del commercio cittadino. Il ghetto fu uno strumento di oppressione ma anche, paradossalmente un luogo ove si permise la vita e la crescita della comunità. Si tratta senz'altro di un periodo la cui conoscenza, nonostante la demolizione e la cancellazione della memoria fisica dei luoghi, è necessaria per comprendere dinamiche e caratteristiche del rapporto fra la minoranza ebraica e la città. Compongono il catalogo una corposa sezione di saggi, le schede delle cento opere in mostra e gli schemi e le planimetrie urbanistiche del ghetto di Firenze

Through the lens of time, he charts the sensations and coursing thoughts that accompany desires for freedom as they appear in the work of artists as varied as Toni Morrison, Yvonne Vera, Aimé Césaire, and Issa Samb. "Fugitive time" names a distinct utopian desire directed at the anticipated moment when the body and mind have been unburdened of the violence that has consumed black life globally for centuries, bringing with it a new form of being. Omelsky shows how fugitive time is not about attaining this transcendent release, but instead sustaining the idea of it as an ecstatic social gathering. From the desire for ethereal queer worlds in the Black Audio Film Collective's Twilight City to Sun Ra's transformation of nineteenth-century scientific racism into an insurgent fugitive aesthetic, Omelsky shows how fugitive time evolves and how it remains a dominant form of imagining freedom in global black cultural expression"--

Zugleich werden die Einwanderungsgeschichte und die Erinnerung an die Wiedervereinigung aus der Perspektive ostdeutscher Migrant*innen erzählt. Positionen junger Künstler*innen of Color der zweiten und dritten Generation mit biografischem Bezug zur DDR ergänzen die aktuelle Perspektive.

The establishment of artist collectives such as Spiral and museums devoted to Black art, including the Studio Museum in Harlem, alongside the emergence of art historians and critics like David Driskell and Linda Goode Bryant, marked early steps to bring Black art into broader artistic discourse. In addition to 140 full-color images of approximately seventy paintings, sculptures, and works on paper from public and private collections across the country, the catalogue features in-depth essays, including original research on artists James Porter and Merton Simpson"--

The book aims to open media studies and affect theory to deeper engagement with works and theorists outside Euro-America by offering a detailed exploration of the critical discourses and artistic practices of both influential as well as lesser-known theorists and artists. Through case studies, Feeling Media proposes an emergent framework of analysis for the humanities that the author terms the "affective scale." The book reads Japanese media theory as working thought, taking into account its complexity and global interconnectedness while resisting reductive linkages to dominant Euro-American theory. The book also performs a historiographic experiment, viewing two key periods of rapid media transformation in relation to one another, while attending to disparities and disjunctures between them"--

    Kurzfassung: Der Sammelband „Südslawisches Wien“ widmet sich der Sichtbarkeit und Präsenz südslawischer Sprachen und Kulturen im Wien der Gegenwart und versammelt Beiträge, die sich aus unterschiedlichen wissenschaftlichen Perspektiven mit dem Südslawischen und den Südslaw*innen in Wien beschäftigen.Der Sammelband „Südslawisches Wien“ diskutiert die Sichtbarkeit und Anwesenheit südslawischer Bevölkerungsgruppen, ihrer Sprachen, Kulturen und künstlerischen Ausdrucksformen in der österreichischen Bundeshauptstadt. Laut Integrationsmonitor der Stadt lebten 2020 rund 180.000 Menschen südslawischer Herkunft in Wien. Sie kommen vor allem aus Bosnien und Herzegowina, Kroatien und Serbien, aber auch aus Slowenien, Bulgarien und Nordmazedonien. Jede*r zehnte Wiener*in ist damit Südslaw*in. Hinzu kommt die autochthone kroatische und slowenische Bevölkerung Österreichs, die in Wien ihre eigenen kulturellen Strukturen aufgebaut hat. Die Bundeshauptstadt stellt für alle diese Gruppen einen zentralen kulturellen Bezugspunkt dar. Im Fokus des Sammelbandes stehen zusammenschauend die Wiener südslawische Gegenwart und alle Schauplätze, an denen südslawische Sprachen, Kulturen und Menschen in Wien heute sichtbar werden.
    Kurzfassung: Angaben zur beteiligten Person Jakiša: Miranda Jakiša ist Universitätsprofessorin für Südslawische Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft an der Universität Wien. Sie lehrte zuvor an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin und hatte Fellowships an der Princeton University, am Imre-Kertesz-Kolleg sowie an der Slowenischen Akademie der Wissenschaften und Künste (ZRC) inne. Miranda Jakiša forscht unter dem Begriff der „Post-Jugoslawistik“ insbesondere zu Gegenwartsphänomenen in historischer Perspektive und alle südslawische Kultur-Räume umfassend, zu denen sie auch internationale Diaspora-Gemeinschaften zählt.

Sie studierte in Wien und Zagreb und promovierte an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin mit einer Arbeit zu Sprach- und Identifikationsdiskursen bei den Burgenländischen Kroat*innen. Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte beinhalten soziolinguistische Fragestellungen mit einem Fokus auf Schrift und Graphie, Minderheitensprachen und Volksgruppen sowie Sichtbarkeiten südslawischer Sprachen in Österreich.

    Kurzfassung: Im Anschluss an bisherige Forschungen zu Heimatzeitschriften der Deutschen in und aus dem östlichen Europa am IVDE Freiburg rückten in den letzten Jahren Fragestellungen zu ihrer visuellen Gestaltung ins Blickfeld. Erste Untersuchungen waren der Gestaltung von Titelseiten, medienspezifischen Werbeanzeigen oder beteiligten Akteuren gewidmet. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes nähern sich dieser Thematik an und ergänzen bisherige Ergebnisse mit neuen Aspekten. Neben Überlegungen zu Brüchen und Kontinuitäten bei der visuellen Konstruktion von Periodika, die an Vorgängerzeitschriften in den Herkunftsgebieten anknüpften, werden Bildmotive, Bild-Text-Bezüge und unterschiedliche Deutungskontexte bei Kunstwerken und Fotografien diskutiert. Weitere Beiträge erörtern ausgewählte Gesichtspunkte der Geschichte der Fotografie in den Ländern der Böhmischen Krone und der Bildmotive in der Amateurfotografie vor 1945 sowie die Reproduktion solcher Aufnahmen in Heimatzeitschriften nach 1945. Auch Fragen der frühen fotografischen Reportage in den 1950er-Jahren und des fotografischen Blickes von Heimatreisenden werden beleuchtet. Ein Bericht über die Neuerungen des Online-Handbuchs Heimatpresse sowie der Fotografen- und Künstlerdatenbank schließt den Sammelband ab. Walters, unpack European artists’ engagement with the Black figure, simultaneously evoked as a changeable political symbol and a representation of exoticized beauty and desire. The authors compare Carpeaux’s sculpture to works by his contemporaries, such as Charles-Henri-Joseph Cordier, Edmonia Lewis, and Louis Simon Boizot, as well as to objects by twenty-first-century artists Kara Walker and Kehinde Wiley.     Kurzfassung: "Organized around a single object—the marble bust Why Born Enslaved! by French sculptor Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux—Fictions of Emancipation: Carpeaux Recast is the first exhibition at The Met to examine Western sculpture in relation to the histories of transatlantic slavery, colonialism, and empire. Created in the wake of American emancipation and some twenty years after the abolition of slavery in the French Atlantic, Why Born Enslaved! was shaped by the enduring popularity of antislavery imagery, the development of nineteenth-century ethnographic theories of racial difference, and France’s colonialist fascination with Africa. The exhibition will explore the sculpture’s place within these contexts. Featuring more than thirty-five works of art in sections unfolding around Carpeaux’s sculpture, Fictions of Emancipation will offer an in-depth look at portrayals of Black enslavement, emancipation, and personhood with an aim toward challenging the notion that representation in the wake of abolition constitutes a clear moral or political stance. But most accounts miss the defining impact of the period’s youth culture, largely incubated in California, on artists who came of age in that decade. As their prime exemplar, Bruce Conner, reminisced, “I did everything that everybody did in 1967 in the Haight-Ashbury. . . . I would take peyote and walk out in the streets.” And he vividly channeled those experiences into his art, while making his mark on every facet of the psychedelic movement—from the mountains of Mexico with Timothy Leary to the rock ballrooms of San Francisco to the gilded excesses of the New Hollywood. In The Artist in the Counterculture, Thomas Crow tells the story of California art from the 1960s to the 1980s—some of the strongest being made anywhere at the time—and why it cannot be understood apart from the new possibilities of thinking and feeling unleashed by the rebels of the counterculture.Crow reevaluates Conner and other key figures—from Catholic activist Corita Kent to Black Panther Emory Douglas to ecological witness Bonnie Ora Sherk—as part of a generational cohort galvanized by resistance to war, racial oppression, and environmental degradation. Younger practitioners of performance and installation carried the mindset of rebellion into the 1970s and 1980s, as previously excluded artists of color moved to the forefront in Los Angeles. Drawing on a range of theories including affect theory, material feminism, skin studies, phenomenology and global art history, the book illuminates the various ways in which artists are harnessing the affective power of craft materials to address and cope with violence. Artists from Mexico, Africa, China, the Netherlands and Indigenous artists based in the unceded territory known as Canada are examined in relation to one another to illuminate the connections and differences across their bodies of work.     Kurzfassung: Im Gegensatz zur Kunst gilt Kitsch als profan und wenig reflexiv. Doch ist diese Entgegensetzungen nicht zu einfach gedacht? Könnte es nicht zahlreiche Zwischenstufen der Reflexivität geben? Thomas Küpper geht diesen Fragen nach und diskutiert verschiedene Positionen dazu aus Literatur, Philosophie, Film und Fernsehen, von Walter Benjamin bis André Rieu. Dabei zeigt er auf, dass Kitsch bestimmte Formen von Reflexivität braucht, um dem Publikum heile Welten, große Gefühle und kleine Fluchten bieten zu können: Wie beim Fiktionspakt im Sinne von Samuel Coleridge geht das Publikum einen Pakt mit dem Kitsch ein.

    Kurzfassung: Ausgangspunkt dieses Buches ist der Frühling einer subkulturellen Bewegung im Umfeld besetzter Häuser, selbstverwalteter Projekte und ungenutzter Brachen im Zentrum Berlins. Eine seit Jahrzehnten gewachsene Graffiti-Szene traf sich mit Künstler*innen und Aktivist*innen aus aller Welt, um neue ästhetische Ausdrucksformen zu erfinden und ein Recht auf Stadt für alle zu reklamieren. Es folgte eine kreative Explosion in den Straßen. Es war der euphorische Aufbruch einer Bewegung, die glaubte, die Trennung zwischen Kunst und Alltagsleben auflösen und den öffentlichen Raum zu einem Gesamtkunstwerk umgestalten zu können. - »BITTE LEBN« ist die einzigartige und aus einer aktivistischen Perspektive geschriebene Geschichte und fotografische Dokumentation dieser Bewegung, von urbaner Kunst und Subkultur in Berlin zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts. Das reich illustrierte Buch fragt aber auch nach den Grenzen künstlerischer Aktionsformen, die Gefahr laufen, selbst zur Marke und zum Standortfaktor im Wettbewerb der Metropolen zu werden.

    Kurzfassung: "Il volume offre un primo contributo a un tema poco indagato della storia dell'Italia settentrionale : la presenza, fra Cinquecento e Ottocento, di persone orginarie del continente africano. La ricerca svolta su dipinti, sculture e opere a stampa fornisce una testimonianza diretta del loro ruolo nella società, della loro vita caratterizzata spesso da stenti e umiliazioni derivanti dalla schiavitù, ma a volte anche da percorsi di riscatto e perfino di successo personale. Il racconto si articola in sezioni dedicate alle diverse modalità di raffigurazione delle presenze africane - ora considderate per il loro ruolo storico o morale, ora per il loro valore mitico o leggendario, fra stereotipi e storie vere - e si chiude con i lavori di Theophilus Imani, ricercatore visivo italiano di origine ghanese, che attraverso i suoi dittici fotografici evidenzia il contrasto fra l'iconografia classica occidentale e la rappresentazione del corpo nero nella contemporaneità."

    Kurzfassung: Cordial Cold War examines cultural entanglements, in various forms, between two distant yet interconnected sites of the Cold War – India and the German Democratic Republic (GDR). Focusing on theatre performances, film festivals, newsreels, travel literature, radio broadcasting, cartography and art as sites of engagement, the chapters spotlight spaces of interaction that emerged in spite of, and within, the ambits of Cold War constraints. The inter-disciplinary collection sheds light on the variegated nature of translocal cultural entanglements, at work even before the GDR was officially recognized as a sovereign state by India in 1972. By foregrounding the role of actors, their practices and the sites of their entanglement, the contributions show how creative energies were mobilized to forge zones of friendship, mutual interest and envisioned solidarities. This volume situates actors from the Global South as mutual co-shapers of the cultural Cold War, therein shifting its Euro-American and Soviet epicenters to Non-Aligned India. Going beyond official state channels of international political dialogue, it locates cordiality in the micro-histories and everyday experiences of interpersonal engagements, bringing to focus a hitherto underexplored chapter of India–Germany entanglements.

    Kurzfassung: The 1720 Imperial Circumcision Celebrations in Istanbul offers the first holistic examination of an Ottoman public festival through an in-depth inquiry into different components of the 1720 event. Through a critical and combined analysis of the hitherto unknown archival sources along with the textual and pictorial narratives on the topic, the book vividly illustrates the festival's organizational details and preparations, its complex rites (related to consumption, exchange, competition), and its representation in court-commissioned illustrated festival books (sūrnāmes). To analyze all these phases in a holistic manner, the book employs an interdisciplinary approach by using the methodological tools of history, art history, and performance studies and thus, provides a new methodological and conceptual framework for the study of Ottoman celebrations

    Kurzfassung: Gardening together, becoming subsistent, shaping the city, living art and at the same time reflecting on the utopian sense or nonsense of this activity that was the motto of the neighbourhood garden "Keimzelle" (engl. nucleus) (2011-2019) in Hamburg. In this context, the contributors to the volume provide a strong theoretical basis as well as an artistically vivid examination of the transformative potential of DIY urban spaces. Accompanied by a skilled discourse community, the artistic approach makes a multidimensional penetration of transformative practice tangible. And in the interaction of critical scholarship and political initiative, the possibilities of alternative urban development become clear
    Kurzfassung: Gemeinsam gärtnern, subsistent werden, Stadt gestalten, Kunst leben und zugleich über den utopischen Sinn oder Unsinn dieses Tuns nachdenken - das war die Devise des Nachbarschaftsgartens »Keimzelle« (2011-2019) in Hamburg. Die Beiträger*innen des Bandes liefern in diesem Kontext eine theoretisch fundierte wie künstlerisch anschauliche Auseinandersetzung mit dem transformativen Potenzial von urbanen Räumen des Selbermachens. Begleitet von einer sachkundigen Diskursgemeinschaft wird durch den künstlerischen Zugang eine multidimensionale Durchdringung transformativer Praxis greifbar.     Kurzfassung: Das 20. Jahrhundert als »Zeitalter der Extreme« ist in starkem Maße durch kriegerische und genozidale Auseinandersetzungen geprägt.     Kurzfassung: One hundred years after the founding of the École Coloniale Supérieure in Antwerp, the adjacent Middelheim Museum invites Sandrine Colard, researcher and curator, to conceive an exhibition that probes silenced histories of colonialism in a site-specific way. For Colard, the term Congoville encompasses the tangible and intangible urban traces of the colony, not on the African continent but in 21st-century Belgium: a school building, a park, imperial myths, and citizens of African descent. In the exhibition and this adjoining publication, the concept Congoville is the starting point for 15 contemporary artists to address colonial history and ponder its aftereffects as black flâneurs walking through a postcolonial city.00Due to the multitude of perspectives and voices, this book is both a catalogue and a reference work comprised of artistic and academic contributions.
