    Abstract: Wer das Berliner Olympiagelände besucht, stolpert unweigerlich über das Fortwirkungen der NS-Monumentalität des Geländes – und auch über ihre bis heute weitgehend ungebrochene Tradierung von völkischer und antisemitischer Monumentalität. Die Kritik daran ist vielfältig, aber bisher eher lose verwoben: Wo steht die Debatte – oder: wo stehen die Debatten? Welche Perspektiven gibt es, aus historischer, musealer, künstlerischer, politischer, sportlicher oder denkmalschützender Perspektive? Wo lassen sich Brücken der Kritik schlagen, wo sind unterschiedliche Perspektiven widersprüchlich, an welchen Stellen bedarf es grundlegender Neuorientierung oder Neujustierung der Debatte? Der Sammelband versucht, diese Fragen anzureißen, Wege der Auseinandersetzung zu skizzieren oder zu initiieren, aber auch grundlegende Probleme zu benennen.
    Abstract: Anyone who visits Berlin’s Olympic Park will inevitably stumble across the continued effects of the site's Nazi monumentality—and also its largely unbroken tradition of ethnic and anti-Semitic monumentality. The criticism of this is diverse, but so far rather loosely interwoven: Where does the debate stand—or, indeed, where do the debates stand? What views are there from the perspectives of history, museums, art, politics, sport or monument protection? Where can bridges of criticism be built, where are the different perspectives contradictory, and where is fundamental reorientation or readjustment of the debate(s) required? This anthology attempts to address these questions, not only to outline or initiate paths of debate but also to identify fundamental problems.

    Abstract: Spätestens seit der Corona-Pandemie werden Verschwörungstheorien zunehmend als gesellschaftspolitisches Problem wahrgenommen und sind zum Politikum geworden. Wohl noch nie zuvor gab es im öffentlichen Diskurs eine derart hohe Sensibilität für das Thema. Ängste vor Verschwörungen einerseits und Ängste vor Verschwörungstheorien andererseits schaukeln sich offenbar gegenseitig hoch. Dies führt zu einer anwachsenden gesellschaftlichen Polarisierung und zu einem Klima von Misstrauen, Empörung und Gereiztheit. Zehn Jahre nach der Erstauflage des vorliegenden Bandes erscheint die Analyse des gegenwärtigen Verschwörungsdenkens dringender denn je. Im Rahmen von sechs neuen Beiträgen nimmt die erweiterte Neuauflage aktuelle Entwicklungen in den Blick.     Abstract: Beschleunigung, Zeitverdichtung und Effizienz sind oft genannte Schlagworte unserer Gegenwart, die sich aufs Engste mit der Stadt verbinden. Hektik und Geschäftigkeit im urbanen Raum scheinen Menschen zu Funktionsträgern zu verwandeln. Die Brüchigkeit dieser vorherrschenden Vorstellung zeigt sich aber bereits an Figuren wie der des Flaneurs, der sich gerade im Getriebe der Großstadt gelassen bewegt. Auch scheinbar gegenläufige Tendenzen lassen sich erkennen: Orte wie Stadtparks oder Museen suggerieren ebenso Refugien der Entschleunigung wie eine wachsende 'Erholungsindustrie'. Im selben Moment können aber solche Angebote wieder den Mechanismen der Zweckgebundenheit und der Selbstoptimierung unterliegen. Der Sammelband widmet sich diesen komplexen Fragen und ambivalenten Befunden und beleuchtet erstmals aus geistes-, kultur- und sozialwissenschaftlicher Perspektive mögliche Freiräume der Muße im urbanen Raum.

    Abstract: Klappentext: Die Phraseologie hat sich durch ihre Öffnung für generelle Fragen der Formelhaftigkeit von Sprache als Wissenschaftsdisziplin aus einem Nischendasein befreit. Aber hat sich auch ihre didaktische Teildisziplin, die die fremd- und primärsprachenunterrichtliche Anwendung phraseologischer Erkenntnisse untersucht, etablieren können und eigene Forschungsdimensionen ausgebildet? Der Band zeigt für die deutschsprachige Phraseodidaktik aktuelle Forschungsfragen, Theorie- und Modellbildungen, methodische Ansätze und Vermittlungskonzepte. Dabei spiegelt die Gewichtung der Beiträge in dem Band allerdings auch wider, dass sich fremd- und primärsprachliche Phraseodidaktik in einem unterschiedlichen Tempo entwickeln: Während die fachdidaktischen Diskurse im fremdsprachlichen Bereich vielfältig und fortgeschritten sind, ist es in der primärsprachlichen Phraseodidaktik noch nicht durchschlagskräftig gelungen, den viel zitierten "Dornröschenschlaf" (Peter Kühn) zu beenden. Gleichwohl eröffnet dieser Band nicht nur ein Spektrum heutiger fremdsprachlicher Phraseodidaktik, sondern bietet auch für die primärsprachliche Phraseodidaktik richtungsweisende Beiträge. Für Beides schafft der Band Zugriffsmöglichkeiten und unterbreitet ein Diskussionsangebot.

    Abstract: Global Labour History has rapidly gained ground as a field of study in the 21st century, attracting interest in the Global South and North alike. Scholars derive inspiration from the broad perspective and the effort to perceive connections between global trends over time in work and labour relations, incorporating slaves, indentured labourers and sharecroppers, housewives and domestic servants. Casting this sweeping analytical gaze, this book discusses the core concepts ‘capitalism’ and ‘workers’, and refines notions such as ‘coerced labour’, ‘household strategies’ and ‘labour markets’. It explores in new ways the connections between labourers in different parts of the world, arguing that both ‘globalisation’ and modern labour management originated in agriculture in the Global South and were only later introduced in Northern industrial settings. It reveals that 19th-century chattel slavery was frequently replaced by other forms of coerced labour, and it reconstructs the laborious 20th-century attempts of the International Labour Organisation to regulate labour standards supra-nationally. The book also pays attention to the relational inequality through which workers in wealthy countries benefit from the exploitation of those in poor countries. The final part addresses workers’ resistance and acquiescence: why collective actions often have unanticipated consequences; why and how workers sometimes organise massive flights from exploitation and oppression; and why ‘proletarian revolutions’ took place in pre-industrial or industrialising countries and never in fully developed capitalist societies.

    Abstract: This handbook brings together scholars from various disciplines and from around the world to examine the history, characteristics, effects, viability and implementation of basic income. The first edition of this book contributed a comprehensive treatment of multiple aspects of the basic income debate. This updated, expanded edition tackles new topics that are becoming increasingly prominent in the global debate. New chapters are devoted to recent research on the history of basic income; the development and peacemaking potential of basic income in conflict zones; municipal experiments in the United States; requirements for pilot projects and experiments; and the public health implications of basic income. Existing chapters on the implementation of basic income have also been substantially updated to take account of new research on microsimulation, land value tax, local currencies, and blockchain technology and cryptocurrency, along with new material on the increasing use of opinion polls and the difficulties related to that.     Abstract: This open access book is the product of three years of academic research that has been carried out in the EU-funded Jean Monnet Network on “Post-Truth Politics, Nationalism and the Delegitimation of European Integration” since 2019. Drawing on the multidisciplinary expertise of the network’s members, the book explores the impact of the phenomenon of post-truth politics on European integration and the European Union. It places particular emphasis on how post-truth politics has played out in the public sphere and asks what impact the phenomenon has had on public deliberation, but reflects also on its implications for democracy in a wider sense. This book is primarily written for audiences with an interest in politics and policy making, including academics, policy makers and civil-society actors.     Abstract: This book assesses the impact of the May 2019 European elections as well as the Covid-19 pandemic on the EU’s politics, institutions, and policies. Special attention is paid to the impact of these events on the different political forces as well as on the Union’s institutional balance, its priorities and the reform of its budget and policies. Because of the many post-electoral uncertainties, the book also takes into account how the relations between the Parliament, the European Council and the new Commission have developed. Furthermore, it analyses the capacity of the von der Leyen Commission to implement an ambitious programme, especially in the context of an unfolding pandemic. The objective of this book is to study the 2019 electoral sequence (parliamentary elections, appointment of EU institutions leaders, investiture of the Commission, new legislative programme) and determine its influence on the main institutional and political challenges for the 2019-2024 legislature. In other words, the volume deals with the question of who holds the EU’s leadership after the 2019 elections and how it handles the 2020-2021 pandemic. Olivier Costa is Director of European Political and Governance Studies at the College of Europe, Belgium, and Research Professor in Political Science and EU studies at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, CEVIPOF-Sciences Po, France.     Abstract: The European Union (‘EU’) is promoting a suite of innovations in international economic regulation—among them, reforms for secure and sustainable investment, a comprehensive approach to the mutual recognition of professional qualifications, a viable carbon border adjustment mechanism, heightened intellectual property rights protection, the arm’s length principle in taxation, and an increased commitment to non-economic vales. Through a critical analysis of key regulations and policies, this volume explores the evolving architectures of international economic agreements in light of EU practice. A comprehensive analysis indicates that novelties are rooted in geoeconomic considerations, through which a fundamental shift is underway towards the adoption of comprehensive bilateral trade agreements. Whilst innovation has the potential to significantly harmonise cross-border regulatory frameworks, it can also trigger significant fractures, particularly when applied restrictively and asymmetrically. Arguably, the ‘Brussels effect’ will to a certain extent foster a progressive development of international economic regulation, while in some respects being constrained by the status quo of the international economic regime. This volume is part of the Jean Monnet project Third Country Engagement with EU Trade Policy led by the ANU Centre for European Studies at the Australian National University, and supported by the European Commission under the Erasmus+ actions. The project seeks to explore and improve understanding of the EU’s evolving trade policy and its implications for third countries, including Australia and countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

    Abstract: Racism is once again an issue in Germany. Few studies have addressed the changing manifestations of racism in West Germany and in post-1990 Germany. The essays in this collection trace an arc of continuity from post-1945 völkisch ideology to the beginnings of right-wing terrorism, to the consequences of legislation concerning foreigners, and to issues of identity politics.
    Abstract: Rassismus ist ein vieldiskutiertes Gegenwartsthema – doch die spezifisch deutschen Aspekte und Brüche in der jüngeren Geschichte des Phänomens sind noch kaum erforscht. Nach einer ausführlichen Skizze und Analyse der westdeutschen Rassismushistorie durch den Herausgeber nimmt der Band in chronologischer Gliederung exemplarische Facetten in den Blick. Die Beiträge schlagen einen Bogen von den Kontinuitäten völkischen Denkens nach 1945 und den Anfängen des Rechtsterrorismus hin zu den Fragestellungen, die das frühe 21. Jahrhundert betreffen. Analysiert werden u. a. das sich verändernde linke wie rechte Rassismus-Verständnis nach 1968, die Aporien der frühen Rassismus-Forschung und des Multikulturalismus, sowie die Ära der "völkischen Ekstase" nach der Wiedervereinigung. Brennende Asylbewerberunterkünfte und die NSU-Mordserie zeigten, wie virulent der Rassismus in Deutschland noch ist, der in den identitätspolitischen Debatten jüngst unter neuen Vorzeichen thematisiert wird.

    Abstract: Why do certain parts of the state in Africa work so effectively despite operating in difficult governance contexts? How do 'pockets of bureaucratic effectiveness' emerge and become sustained over time? And what does this tell us about the prospects for state-building and development in Africa? Repeated economic and social crises have demanded that development thinkers and policy actors have had to engage with the critical role that states play in delivering development. Pockets of Effectiveness and the Politics of State-building and Development in Africa shows that politics is the driving factor that shapes how well state agencies perform their roles. It deploys a new conceptual framework – the power domains approach – to explore the shifting fortunes of key state agencies in five countries – Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, and Zambia – over the past three decades. Our original research reveals when, how and why political rulers decide to build effective state agencies and enable them to deliver certain forms of economic development – often through forming strategic coalitions with senior bureaucrats and with international support – and also when this support falters and gives way to a politics of survival. Comparative analysis identifies two potential trajectories towards state-building in Africa, each shaped by different configurations of social and political power. The book critiques the role that international development agencies have played in (mis)shaping the state in Africa and suggests a new strategic agenda for building the state capacities required to deliver sustained development at the current juncture. The book closes with critical commentaries from two leading scholars in the field, to help place our work in context and establish the next steps for research and strategy in this increasingly important area of development theory and practice

Der Begriff Widerspruch kann sowohl eine private Unmutsäußerung als auch den rechtlich verankerten Einspruch bezeichnen, aber auch Unvereinbarkeiten oder sich diametral gegenüberstehende Gegensätze. Auf der gesellschaftlichen Ebene werden solche Konflikte und Aushandlungsprozesse in Protesten sichtbar, wie jüngst den Anti-Corona-Demonstrationen, oder in Petitionen und Online-Kampagnen, wie #metoo oder #blacklivesmatter. Widersprüche sind feste Bestandteile gesellschaftlicher Aushandlungsprozesse sowie wissenschaftlicher Forschung.     Abstract: Infrastructures are fundamental means through which societies create spaces, but little is known about the precise ways in which this occurs. How have infrastructures animated certain understandings of space? How do infrastructures stabilize, or undermine, the spatial formats in which we live, which shape our everyday practices and which regulate access to services and resources? And, conversely, how do spaces frame the ways infrastructural provision is organized? How do existing spaces shape infrastructural development and the scope and forms of access to vital services such as transport and water? In this volume, historians and sociologists draw on a range of fascinating case studies and provide compelling answers to these questions. Exploring, among others, the provision of irrigation water in nineteenth-century Los Angeles, the invention of airport transit zones, and the infrastructural practices of homeless people in Berlin, the book demonstrates how the making of spaces through infrastructure is deeply political. Intent on revealing uneven geographies of provision and hierarchies of access, the contributors highlight how infrastructures are products of global entanglements.

    Abstract: The concept of the generation in today's German culture and literature, and its role in German identity. In the debates since 1945 on German history and culture, the concept of generations has become ever more prominent. Recent and ongoing shifts in how the various generations are seen -- and see themselves -- in relation to historyand to each other have taken on key importance in contemporary German cultural studies. The seismic events of twentieth-century German history are no longer solely first-generational lived experiences but are also historical moments seen through the eyes of successor generations. The generation, seen as a category of memory, thus holds a key to major shifts in German identity. The changing generational perspectives of German writers and filmmakers not onlyreflect but also influence these trends, exposing both the expected differences between generational views and unexpected continuities. Moreover, as younger artists reframe recent history, older generations like the 1968ers are also contributing to these shifts by reassessing their own experiences and cultural contributions. This volume of new essays applies current discourse on generations in German culture to contemporary works dealing with major sociohistorical events since the Nazi period.     Abstract: Discourses of Heimat and of migration both negotiate questions of identity, belonging, and integration; moreover, despite the reemergence of right-wing, racist, and exclusionary uses of the term Heimat, there are in fact more recent German-language cultural texts that problematize and challenge a view of Heimat as a community that excludes the Other than there are promulgating it. This volume addresses the parallel proliferation of discourses of Heimat and of migration in contemporary German-language culture and demonstrates that the entanglement of migration and Heimat can be productive: it can help us to reframe what it means to have a home, to lose one, find one, or belong to one

    Abstract: Everyday life as we knew it is increasingly challenged in a world of climate, social, health and political crisis. Emerging technologies, data analytics and automation open up new possibilities which have implications for energy generation, storage and energy demand. To support these changes we urgently need to rethink how energy will be sourced, shared and used. Yet existing approaches to this problem, driven by engineering, data analytics and capital, are dangerously conservative and entrenched. Energy Futures critically evaluates this context, and the energy infrastructures, stakeholders, and politics that participate in it, to propose plausible, responsible and ethical modes of encountering possible energy futures. Imagining anthropocene challenges, emerging technologies and everyday life otherwise through empirically grounded studies, opens up possible energy futures. Energy Futures proposes and demonstrates a new critical and interventional futures-oriented energy anthropology. Combining the theories and methods of futures anthropology with the critical expertise and perspectives of energy anthropology creates a powerful mode of engagement, which this book argues is needed to disrupt the dominant narratives about our energy futures. Its contributors collectively reveal and evidence through innovative ethnographic practice how new knowledge about imagined and possible energy futures can be mobilised in engagements with emerging technologies, anthropocene challenges and everyday realities. In doing so it brings together authors, analytical expertise and ethnographic evidence from the global south, north and places in between, generated through innovative methodologies including remote video and comic strip methods and documentary video practice as well as long term fieldwork

    Abstract: Spätestens mit den Debatten zu einer zunehmenden Polarisierung der deutschen und anderer europäischer Gesellschaften rückt die Frage nach Prozessen der Radikalisierung in den Blick. Neben individuellen Radikalisierungen sind es vor allem gesellschaftliche Rahmenbedingungen, die für die Radikalisierung, manchmal sogar ganzer Gruppen, verantwortlich zeichnen. Im vorliegenden Buch werden unter Einbezug unterschiedlicher Perspektiven Prozesse der Radikalisierung und damit verbundenen Co-Radikalisierung auf rechtsextremer und muslimischer Seite untersucht und diskutiert.     Abstract: "Republicans and Democrats increasingly distrust, avoid, and wish harm upon those from the other party. To make matters worse, they also increasingly reside among like-minded others and are part of social groups that share their political beliefs. All of this can make expressing a dissenting political opinion hard. Yet digital and social media have given people new spaces for political discourse and community, and more control over who knows their political beliefs and who does not. With Democracy Lives in Darkness, Van Duyn looks at what these changes in the political and media landscape mean for democracy. She uncovers and follows a secret political organization in rural Texas over the entire Trump presidency. The group, which organized out of fear of their conservative community in 2016, has a confidentiality agreement, an email listserv and secret Facebook group, and meets in secret every month. By building relationships with members, she explores how and why they hide their beliefs and what this does for their own political behavior and for their community. Drawing on research from communication, political science, and sociology along with survey data on secret political expression, she finds that polarization has led even average partisans to hide their political beliefs from others. And although intensifying polarization will likely make political secrecy more common, she argues that this secrecy is not just evidence that democracy is hurting, but that it is still alive; that people persist in the face of opposition and that this matters if democracy is to survive"--

    Abstract: Klappentext: Die sozio-technischen Verhältnisse der digitalen Transformation fordern Vorstellungen des "souveränen Staates" und des "souveränen Subjekts" heraus. In den Debatten um die "digitale Souveränität" werden diese Herausforderungen problematisiert. "Souveränität" ist allerdings ein komplexes Konzept. Es wird Aufgabe der Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften sein, im Dialog mit den Technikwissenschaften differenzierte Perspektiven auf "(digitale) Souveränität" herauszuarbeiten und damit Orientierungswissen für die gesellschaftliche Selbstverständigung im digitalen Zeitalter sowie die Gestaltung der digitalen Transformation zu entwickeln. Als „negative Leitidee der Moderne“ ist Antisemitismus in sämtlichen Musikrichtungen zu finden und wird auf unterschiedlichen Ebenen vermittelt: sei es durch Songtexte, Albumcover, Musikvideos, Bühnenauftritte, durch die Musikform bzw. des Stils an sich oder die ideologische und strukturelle Einbindung von Musiker:innen in die extrem rechte Szene bis hin zur Beeinflussung ganzer Musikszenen durch die antisemitische BDS-Kampagne. In den Aufsätzen geben die Autor:innen daher einen Überblick zu aktuellen Entwicklungen und liefern Analysen und Einschätzungen zu den mannigfaltigen antisemitischen Verstrickungen in der Musik.     Abstract: This anthology addresses the question of how anti-Semitism appears and is expressed in modern music. As a ‘negative guiding idea of modernity’, anti-Semitism can be found in all musical genres and is conveyed on different levels, be it through song lyrics, album covers, music videos, stage performances, through the musical form or style itself, or the ideological and structural integration of musicians into the extreme rightwing scene, all the way to the influence of entire music scenes through the anti-Semitic BDS campaign. In the essays in this book, the authors therefore give an overview of current develop-ments and provide analyses and assessments of the manifold anti-Semitic manifestations in music. With contributions by Lukas Geck, Maria Kanitz, Annica Peter, Jan Schäfer, Jakob Baier, Kai E.
