    Abstract: This book explores the interaction between three key aspects of everyday life-language, writing, and mobility -with particular focus on their effects on language contact. While the book adopts an established view of language and society that is in keeping with the sociolinguistic paradigm developed in recent decades, it differs from earlier studies in that it assigns writing a central position. Sociolinguistics has long concentrated primarily on speech,but Florian Coulmas shows in this volume that the social importance of writing should not be disregarded: it is the most consequential technology ever invented; it suggests stability; and it defines borders. Linguistic studies have often emphasized that writing is external to language, but thediscipline nevertheless owes its analytic categories to writing. Finally, the digital revolution has fundamentally changed communication patterns, transforming the social functions of writing and consequently also of language

    Abstract: This volume analyzes the use of the term 'rapport' within anthropology, sociolinguistics, and related fields. Rather than viewing the term as simply denoting a type of positive social relationship that needs to be formed between researcher and consultant before research can begin, the book invites us to reimagine rapport theoretically, methodologically, and meta-methodologically. In doing so it invites the reader to think about how rapport has been constructed within these disciplines, and ultimately to see rapport as an emergent, co-constructed social relationship that is built during situated multimodal encounters. This reconceptualization is essential to establishing a more sophisticated understanding of research context.

In other words, games work in the medium of agency. This book explores what games have to teach us about our own rationality and agency. We have the capacity for a peculiar sort of motivational inversion. For some of us, winning is not the point. We take on an interest in winning temporarily, so that we can play the game. Thus, we are capable of taking on temporary and disposable ends. At the center of this book is a view about games as communicative artifacts. Games are a way of recording forms of agency; they are a library of agencies. And exploring that library can help us develop our own agency and autonomy.

    Abstract: This handbook is the first volume to provide a comprehensive, in-depth, and balanced discussion of ellipsis phenomena, whereby a perceived interpretation is fuller than would be expected based solely on the presence of linguistic forms. Natural language abounds in these apparently incomplete expressions, such as I laughed but Ed didn’t, in which the final portion of the sentence, the verb ‘laugh’, remains unpronounced but is still understood. The range of phenomena involved raise general and fundamental questions about the workings of grammar, but also constitute a treasure trove of fine-grained points of inter- and intralinguistic variation. The volume is divided into four parts. In the first, the authors examine the role that ellipsis plays and how it is analyzed in different theoretical frameworks and linguistic subdisciplines, such as HPSG, construction grammar, inquisitive semantics, and computational linguistics. Chapters in the second part highlight the usefulness of ellipsis as a diagnostic tool for other linguistic phenomena including movement and islands and codeswitching, while Part III focuses instead on the types of elliptical constructions found in natural language, such as sluicing, gapping, and null complement anaphora. Finally, the last part of the book contains case studies that investigate elliptical phenomena in a wide variety of languages, including Dutch, Japanese, Persian, and Finnish Sign Language.

Mary Kate McGowan identifies a previously overlooked mechanism by which speech constitutes, rather than merely causes, harm. She argues that speech constitutes harm when it enacts a norm that prescribes that harm. McGowan illustrates this theory by considering many categories of speech including sexist remarks, racist hate speech, pornography, verbal triggers for stereotype threat, micro-aggressions, political dog whistles, slam poetry, and even the hanging of posters. 'Just Words' explores a variety of harms - such as oppression, subordination, discrimination, domination, harassment, and marginalisation - and ways in which these harms can be remedied.

    Abstract: Given the vast inventory of verbal and visual images of nonhuman animals disseminated for millennia to debase and bestialize Jews (the Bestiarium Judaicum), this work asks: What is at play when Jewish-identified writers employ such figures in their narratives and poems? Bringing together Jewish cultural studies, examining how Jews have negotiated Jew-Gentile difference, and critical animal studies, analyzing the functions served by asserting human-animal difference, this monograph focuses on the writings of primarily Germanophone authors, including Sigmund Freud, Heinrich Heine, Franz Kafka, Gertrud Kolmar, H. Leivick, Felix Salten, and Curt Siodmak. It ferrets out of their nonhuman-animal constructions their responses to the bestial answers upon which the Jewish and animal questions converged and by which varieties of the species 'Jew' were depicted.

    Abstract: The Oxford Handbook of Taboo Words and Language defines taboo as a proscription of behaviour for a specifiable community of one or more persons at a specifiable time in specifiable contexts. What is in fact tabooed is the use of those words and language in certain contexts; in short, the taboo applies to instances of language behaviour. For behaviour to be proscribed it must be perceived as in some way harmful to an individual or their community but the degree of harm can fall anywhere on a scale from a breach of etiquette to out-and-out fatality. All tabooed behaviours are deprecated and they lead to social if not legal sanction. Taboos are described and the reasons and beliefs behind them are investigated.

Dennoch ist bei der Betrachtung der Stadtbrache die Geschichte des in der französischen Romantik und Moderne verankerten Begriffs bisher übersehen worden. Dieser Band liefert daher eine historische und systematische Untersuchung des Konzepts des terrain vague.

    Abstract: This study is a concise introduction to Bruno Latour's Actor-Network Theory and its application in a literary analysis of urban narratives of the 21st century. We encounter well-known psycho-geographers such as Iain Sinclair and Sam Miller, and renowned authors, Patrick Neate and Suketu Mehta. Prachi More analyses these authors' accounts of vastly different cities such as London, Delhi, Mumbai, Johannesburg, New York and Tokyo. Are these urban narratives a contemporary solution to documenting an ever-evasive urban reality? If so, how do they embody "matters of concern" as Latour would have put it, laying bare modern-day "actors" and "networks" rather than reporting mere "matters of fact"? These questions are drawn into an inter-disciplinary discussion that addresses concerns and questions of epistemology, the sociology of knowledge as well as urban and documentary studies.

Die Stadt als der Ort verdichteten Austauschs - nicht nur von Waren und Dienstleistungen, sondern vor allem auch von Meinungen, Ansichten und Weltauffassungen, kurz: als ein Ort der Doxa - ist der prototypische Ort der Rhetorik.Anhand von Problemen der Orientierung und des Place-Making zeigt Pierre Smolarski die Stadt als Ort nicht nur der Verdichtung und des Wettstreits divergenter Meinungen, sondern auch als Gegenstand mannigfaltiger rhetorischer Bemühungen - sie ist nicht nur ein Raum für Rhetorik, sondern auch für sich ein rhetorischer Raum.
    Abstract: Rhetoric cannot be thought of without the city. The city, a site of condensed exchange - not only of goods and services, but above all of opinions, views, and perceptions of the world; in short, a site of doxa - is the prototypical site of rhetoric. With reference to the problems of orientation and place-making, Pierre Smolarski shows the city as a site not only of the condensing and contesting of divergent opinions, but also an object of manifold rhetorical endeavours - not only a space for rhetoric, but itself also a rhetorical space.

Die Studie öffnet den Blick auf die historischen Dimensionen rassistischer Unterscheidungspraxen und ihre Tradierungen bis in die Gegenwart und ist zugleich ein Plädoyer zur Repolitisierung von Theater und Theaterpädagogik.

Die in diesem Band präsentierten empirischen Erkenntnisse über Kulturnutzung zeigen bestehende Barrieren auf. Neben Konzepten der Kulturvermittlung (Audience Development, Outreach, partizipative Projekte und Change-Management- Prozesse kultureller Institutionen) werden kulturpolitische Strategien der teilhabeorientierten Neuausrichtung des Kulturlebens einer Stadt oder Region (Community Building und beteiligungsorientierte Kulturentwicklungsplanung) vorgestellt.

    Abstract: From the dawn of the early modern period, around 1400, until the 18th century, Latin was still the European language and its influence extended as far as Asia and the Americas. At the same time, the production of Latin writing exploded thanks to book printing and new literary and cultural dynamics. Latin also entered into a complex interplay with the rising vernacular languages. This handbook gives an accessible survey of the main genres, contexts and regions of neo-Latin, as we have come to call Latin writing composed in the wake of Petrarch (1304-74). Its emphasis is on the period of neo-Latin's greatest cultural relevance, from the 15th to the 18th centuries.
