    Abstract: Awareness of the importance of sexuality and its disorders in the aging population is increasing as the proportion of older people grows. Based in part on the author's clinical experience and research at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, this book presents an up-to-date overview of the sexuality of aging men in health and illness, within a multidimensional conceptual framework, and taking account of physiological, psychological, interpersonal and social influences. Also discussed are the impact of medical illness, psychopathology and drugs, with a review of coping strategies in shaping individual sexual responses to aging and disease. Many case studies and vignettes are incorporated, and a chapter is devoted to the sexuality of older gay men. A balanced account of medical and psychosocial evaluation and treatment concludes the book, which will be of broad interest to clinicians and students interested in sexuality and aging

The world will consequently face growing scarcities of such vital renewable resources as cropland, fresh water, and forests. Thomas Homer-Dixon argues in this sobering book that these environmental scarcities will have profound social consequences - contributing to insurrections, ethnic clashes, urban unrest, and other forms of civil violence, especially in the developing world." "Homer-Dixon is careful to point out that the effects of environmental scarcity are indirect and act in combination with other social, political, and economic stresses. He also acknowledges that human ingenuity can reduce the likelihood of conflict, particularly in countries with efficient markets, capable states, and an educated populace.     Abstract: Publisher description: Manifesting Power confronts the relationship between gender and power within prehistoric and historic societies. It addresses the extent to which our reconceptions of the nature of power, and of relations between the sexes, are rooted in our own experience of western society, and argues that both conditions and perceptions may have been quite different among peoples of the past. This collection includes nine innovative chapters which draw on data from a range of periods and areas. By looking at the evidence for gender distinctions both from archaeological sites and from ethnographic observation, the contributors explore what these distinctions can reveal about power relationships in general. They argue that the evidence often does not point to the existence of hierarchical gender relationships, and explore the forms of power available to women among the Maya and Aztec, and in prehistoric Denmark, Alaska, and the southeastern United States

    Abstract: There is a tendency in much educational thinking to view pupils in passive terms, as the material on which schools operate. This damaging view is challenged here.     Abstract: Both firms, keen to improve their competitiveness, and governments, keen to exploit new sources of economic and social progress, need to understand how innovation works in order to better stimulate it. The paradox of innovation is that it uses co-operation to enhance competition and to link many different actors in innovative clusters. In a knowledge-based economy, these clusters of innovative firms form around sources of knowledge. They are based on a sophisticated infrastructure in which knowledge is developed, shared and exchanged, and are characterised by highly concentrated and effective links between entrepreneurs, investors and researchers. Clusters can take a variety of forms, depending on their main technological and commercial areas of specialisation. In most cases they operate within localised geographical areas and interact within larger innovation systems at the regional, national and international level. With globalisation, dynamic clusters are becoming key factors in a country’s capacity to attract the international investment that generates new technological expertise, to interest investors in innovation (venture capital, etc.) and to benefit from the international mobility of skilled personnel. This book reviews the latest economic research on these issues, shows how technology policy makers in OECD countries are making practical use of the concept of clusters and suggests how government policies to foster innovation might best be refocused.

    Abstract: Die Ergebnisse der qualitativen Längsschnittstudie mit jungen Frauen relativieren und erweitern das Konzept des doppelten weiblichen Lebensentwurfs zwischen Beruf und Kind. Welche Vorstellungen haben junge Frauen heute für ihr Leben und wie setzen sie sie um? Diese Fragestellung stand im Zentrum einer qualitativen Längsschnittuntersuchung mit 125 jungen Frauen und ihren Partnern, die zwischen 1991 und 1997 in Bayern und Sachsen durchgeführt wurde: Der Beruf ist für junge Frauen mittlerweile eine Selbstverständlichkeit. Viele möchten Beruf und Kinder vereinbaren, doch immer mehr junge Frauen entwickeln Vorstellungen, die weit über die vielbeschriebene Doppelorientierung hinausgehen: Sie suchen eigene Wege, möchten ohne Kinder mit einem Partner leben oder experimentieren mit Optionen, die sie als junge Frauen in der individualisierten Gesellschaft haben.     Note: Eigenwilligkeit und Rationalität sozialer Prozesse als Thema einer Festschrift 1 für Friedheim Neidhardt Jurgen Gerhards 1. Typisch Neidhardt Festschriften beziehen sich auf und würdigen das Werk des zu Ehrenden. Irving Louis Horowitz (1990) formuliert in seinem Essay über die Festschrift Kriterien, die Herausgeber von Festschriften beachten sollten, damit am Ende ein lesenswertes und den zu Ehrenden angemessenes Produkt entsteht. Eine der wichtigsten Regeln sei es, so Horowitz, daß sich die Autoren einer Festschrift auf den Kern der Schriften des zu Ehrenden beziehen und versuchen, diesen Kern weiterzuentwickeln. Dies verhindere die häufig bei Festschriften anzutreffende große Spannweite und Heterogenität der Beiträge, die Festschriften für Leser und Verlage unattraktiv machten. Teilt man das von Horowitz formulierte Kriterium, dann wirft dies die Frage auf, welches denn der Kern der Neidhardtschen Schriften ist. Überblickt man die Arbeiten, die Friedheim Neidhardt publiziert hat, und versucht, sie zu systematisieren, dann wird augenfällig, daß es eine Ordnung auf den ersten Blick nicht gibt. Während sich manche Autoren frühzeitig auf ein Themenfeld spezialisieren und dieses in ihrer wissenschaftlichen Entwicklung immer weiter und extensiver bearbeiten, findet sich in den Neidhardtschen Arbeiten eine solche inhaltliche Spezialisierung gerade nicht. Die Themenfelder, die er bearbeitet hat, sind vielfältig und tangieren recht unterschiedliche Bindestrichsoziologien: Seine Dissertation über Studentennetzwerke und Gruppen in einem studentischen Wohnheim bildet den Auftakt seiner wissenschaftlichen Veröffentlichungen, der von weiteren jugend- und sozialisationssoziologischen Arbeiten gefolgt wird

Wade, there has been increasing public interest in fetuses, in part as a result of effective antiabortion propaganda and in part as a result of developments in medicine and technology. While feminists have begun to take note of the proliferation of fetal images in various media, such as medical journals, magazines, and motion pictures, few have openly addressed the problems that the emergence of the fetal subject poses for feminism. Fetal Subjects, Feminist Positions foregrounds feminism's effort to focus on the importance of women's reproductive agency, and at the same time acknowledges the increasing significance of fetal subjects in public discourse and private experience. Essays address the public fascination with the fetal subject and its implications for abortion discourse and feminist commitment to reproductive rights in the United States. Contributors include scholars from fields as diverse as anthropology, communications, political science, sociology, and philosophy.

    Abstract: Polygamy, forced marriage, female genital mutilation, punishing women for being raped, differential access for men and women to health care and education, unequal rights of ownership, assembly, and political participation, unequal vulnerability to violence. These practices and conditions are standard in some parts of the world. Do demands for multiculturalism--and certain minority group rights in particular--make them more likely to continue and to spread to liberal democracies? Are there fundamental conflicts between our commitment to gender equity and our increasing desire to respect the customs of minority cultures or religions? In this book, the eminent feminist Susan Moller Okin and fifteen of the world's leading thinkers about feminism and multiculturalism explore these unsettling questions in a provocative, passionate, and illuminating debate. Okin opens by arguing that some group rights can, in fact, endanger women. She points, for example, to the French government's giving thousands of male immigrants special permission to bring multiple wives into the country, despite French laws against polygamy and the wives' own bitter opposition to the practice. Okin argues that if we agree that women should not be disadvantaged because of their sex, we should not accept group rights that permit oppressive practices on the grounds that they are fundamental to minority cultures whose existence may otherwise be threatened. In reply, some respondents reject Okin's position outright, contending that her views are rooted in a moral universalism that is blind to cultural difference. Others quarrel with Okin's focus on gender, or argue that we should be careful about which group rights we permit, but not reject the category of group rights altogether. Okin concludes with a rebuttal, clarifying, adjusting, and extending her original position. These incisive and accessible essays--expanded from their original publication in Boston Review and including four new contributions--are indispensable reading for anyone interested in one of the most contentious social and political issues today.     Abstract: In der Bundesrepublik wurde eine längere Phase des Desinteresses, wenn nicht gar der Tabuisierung bereits im Laufe der achtziger Jahre durch neue wissenschaftliche Anstrengungen durchbrochen, die insbesondere den westdeutschen Gründungs-"Mythos der schnellen Integration" zu differenzieren trachteten. Ebenso kam es zu Versuchen der Geschichtswissenschaft der DDR, die totalitäre Form der Tabuisierung der "Umsiedler"-Integration aufzulockern, wobei man jedoch bis 1989 zwangsläufig den SED-Mythos schneller und erfolgreicher Integration unbedingt verpflichtet blieb. In diesem Band werden die Ergebnisse der Forschungen zu dieser wichtigen Nachkriegsproblematik zusammengefasst.
