    Abstract: [Dt.:] Die Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL) ist die weltweit größte frei zugängliche digitale Bibliothek für Literatur und Archive zur biologischen Vielfalt. Die BHL revolutioniert die globale Forschung, indem sie freien, weltweiten Zugang zum Wissen über das Leben auf der Erde bietet. Die BHL hat ihren Sitz in den Smithsonian Libraries and Archives in Washington, D.C., und ist ein weltweites Konsortium von naturhistorischen und botanischen Forschungs- und Nationalbibliotheken, die zusammenarbeiten, um die naturhistorische Literatur in ihren Sammlungen zu digitalisieren und als Teil einer globalen "Biodiversitätsgemeinschaft" frei zugänglich zu machen. Das BHL-Portal bietet freien Zugang zu Hunderttausenden von Bänden mit über 60 Millionen Seiten aus dem 15. bis 21. Jahrhundert. Das BHL-Konsortium arbeitet mit der internationalen taxonomischen Gemeinschaft, Verlegern, Bioinformatikern und Fachleuten der Informationstechnologie zusammen, um Werkzeuge und Dienste zu entwickeln, die den Zugang, die Interoperabilität und die Nachnutzung von Inhalten und Daten erleichtern. BHL bietet eine Reihe von Diensten, Datenexporten und APIs, die es den Nutzern ermöglichen, Inhalte herunterzuladen, Quelldateien zu sammeln und Materialien für Forschungszwecke wiederzuverwenden. Mit Hilfe der von Global Names Architecture entwickelten Taxonomie-Informations-Tools indexiert das BHL die taxonomischen Namen in der gesamten Sammlung, so dass Forscher Veröffentlichungen zu bestimmten Taxa auffinden können. - [Engl.:] The Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL) is the world’s largest open access digital library for biodiversity literature and archives. BHL is revolutionizing global research by providing free, worldwide access to knowledge about life on Earth. Headquartered at the Smithsonian Libraries and Archives in Washington, D.C., BHL operates as a worldwide consortium of natural history, botanical, research, and national libraries working together by digitizing the natural history literature held in their collections and making it freely available for open access as part of a global “biodiversity community.”The BHL portal provides free access to hundreds of thousands of volumes, comprising over 60 million pages, from the 15th-21st centuries. The BHL consortium works with the international taxonomic community, publishers, bioinformaticians, and information technology professionals to develop tools and services to facilitate greater access, interoperability, and reuse of content and data. BHL provides a range of services, data exports, and APIs to allow users to download content, harvest source data files, and reuse materials for research purposes. Through taxonomic intelligence tools developed by Global Names Architecture, BHL indexes the taxonomic names throughout the collection, allowing researchers to locate publications about specific taxa.

    Abstract: This is an innovative interdisciplinary book about objects and people within museums and galleries. It addresses fundamental issues of human sensory, emotional and aesthetic experience of objects. The chapters explore ways and contexts in which things and people mutually interact, and raise questions about how objects carry meaning and feeling, the distinctions between objects and persons, particular qualities of the museum as context for person-object engagements, and the active and embodied role of the museum visitor. Museum Materialities is divided into three sections - Objects, Engagements and Interpretations - and includes a foreword by Susan Pearce and an afterword by Howard Morphy. It examines materiality and other perceptual and ontological qualities of objects themselves; embodied sensory and cognitive engagements - both personal and across a wider audience spread - with particular objects or object types in a museum or gallery setting; notions of aesthetics, affect and wellbeing in museum contexts; and creative and innovative artistic and museum practices that seek to illuminate or critique museum objects and interpretations. Phenomenological and other approaches to embodied experience in an emphatically material world are current in a number of academic areas, most particularly strands of material culture studies within anthropology and cognate disciplines. Thus far, however, there has been no concerted application of this kind of approach to museum collections and interactions with them by museum visitors, curators, artists and researchers. Bringing together essays by scholars and practitioners from a wide disciplinary and international base, Museum Materialities seeks to make just such a contribution. In so doing it makes a valuable and original addition to the literature of both material culture studies and museum studies.

    Abstract: In The Networked Wilderness, Matt Cohen examines communications systems in early New England and finds that, surprisingly, struggles over information technology were as important as theology, guns, germs, or steel in shaping the early colonization of North America. Colonists in New England have generally been viewed as immersed in a Protestant culture of piety and alphabetic literacy. At the same time, many scholars have insisted that the culture of the indigenous peoples of the region was a predominantly oral culture. But what if, Cohen posits, we thought about media and technology beyond the terms of orality and literacy?Reconceptualizing aural and inscribed communication as a spectrum, The Networked Wilderness bridges the gap between the history of the book and Native American systems of communication. Cohen reveals that books, paths, recipes, totems, and animals and their sounds all took on new interactive powers as the English negotiated the well-developed informational trails of the Algonquian East Coast and reported their experiences back to Europe. Native and English encounters forced all parties to think of each other as audiences for any event that might become a kind of "publication." Using sources ranging from Thomas Morton's Maypole festival to the architecture of today's Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center, Cohen shows that the era before the printing press came to New England was one of extraordinary fertility for communications systems in America.

So sieht sich auch die sozialwissenschaftliche Forschung vor die Herausforderung gestellt, klassische Konzepte intragenerationeller Gerechtigkeit daraufhin zu überprüfen, inwiefern sie Forderungen nach intergenerationeller Gerechtigkeit standhalten. Neben den empirischen und philosophischen Grundfragen analysieren die Beiträger dieses Bandes das Thema Generationengerechtigkeit aus einer ordnungsökonomischen Perspektive. Es geht zum einen um eine Begründung dafür, warum überhaupt heutige Gesellschaftsmitglieder die Interessen zukünftiger Generationen berücksichtigen sollen. Zum anderen werden solche gesellschaftlichen Regeln gesucht, die im besten Falle geeignet sind, die Interessen der kommenden Generationen langfristig zu sichern und dabei zugleich für die heute Lebenden akzeptabel sind.     Abstract: Climate change is arguably the most profound challenge facing the international community in the 21st century. It is as much a challenge for poverty reduction, growth and development as it is a global environmental issue. It could undermine or reverse progress in reducing poverty and attaining the Millenium Development Goals, thereby unraveling many of the development gains of recent decades. It already threatens the livelihoods, health and well-being of millions of people worldwide, and of the poorest and most vulnerable groups in particular. And it has potentially far-reaching implications for international relations and for personal, national and regional security.While significant uncertainties still remain, tremendous strides have been made over recent years in improving scientific understanding of the human processes driving global climate change and the likely impacts on world ecosystems. What is much less well understood is how these dynamics in the physical environment will interact with those of socio-economic systems, what the consequences will be for society, and how best to address them. In order to focus attention on these previously neglected and poorly understood social dimensions of climate change, the World Bank convened an international workshop in March, 2008, with the participation of community activists, former heads of state, leaders of Indigenous Peoples, representatives of non-governmental organizations, international researchers, and staff of the World Bank and other international development agencies. This edited volume brings together revised versions of many of the papers presented during that workshop, as an initial step in taking stock of existing knowledge on the social dimensions of climate change. Several new papers were also commissioned for this volume.

    Abstract: Die Autorin beschäftigt sich mit dem österreichischen, deutschen, englischen, französischen und schweizerischen Recht. Miteinbezogen in die Betrachtung werden auch die Principles of European Tort Law. In den genannten Rechtsordnungen gilt es die Gemeinsamkeiten und die Unterschiede aufzuzeigen. Interessant ist vor allem die gegenläufige Entwicklung bei der Anerkennung von Schock- und Trauerschäden. So stand in Frankreich und der Schweiz der Trauerschaden im Vordergrund, während man sich in England, Deutschland und Österreich zeitlich früher zum Schockschaden bekannte.     Abstract: Die vorliegende Arbeit behandelt im Wesentlichen vier Fragen: 1) Was und wer sind die "nahen Angehörigen"? (Begriffsklärung)2) Warum kommt der "Angehörigeneigenschaft" Bedeutung zu? (Grund und Höhe des Schmerzengeldanspruches)3) Müssen sich die "nahen Angehörigen" das Mitverschulden des Erstgeschädigten entgegenhalten lassen?4) Besitzen die "nahen Angehörigen" einen selbstständigen oder einen abhängigen Schmerzengeldanspruch?Der Rechtsvergleich des österreichischen, deutschen, schweizerischen, englischen und französischen Rechts unter Einbeziehung der Grundsätze des europäischen Schadenersatzrechts (PETL) ergab die nachfolgenden Ergebnisse.Ad 1) Die Grundsätze des europäischen Schadenersatzrechts und alle zu untersuchenden Rechtsordnungen bestimmen den Begriff der "nahen Angehörigen" nach der faktischen Nahebeziehung zwischen dem Erst- und Zweitgeschädigten: die formale Familienzugehörigkeit ist nicht entscheidend, sondern eine intensive Gefühlsgemeinschaft (enge Nahebeziehung). Dabei wird auf eine enge familiäre Beziehung abgestellt, wie sie gewöhnlich zwischen Eltern und ihren Kindern sowie zwischen Ehegatten besteht. Deshalb können auch weit entfernt Verwandte oder nicht verwandte Personen zu den "nahen Angehörigen" zählen. Bisher wurde das jedoch selten für Freunde ins Auge gefasst, obwohl auch für sie nichts anderes gelten kann. Denn das Verständnis der "Familie" hat sich insofern gewandelt, als auch faktische Naheverhältnisse zu berücksichtigen sind. Auf dieser Grundlage wird versucht, für den Begriff der "nahen Angehörigen" eine allgemeine Definition zu finden. Diese lautet wie folgt. Es handelt sich um einen eigenständigen Begriff, der einen bestimmten Personenkreis umschreibt. Dieser Personenkreis erleidet einen Schock- oder Trauerschaden aufgrund seiner engen Nahebeziehung zum Erstgeschädigten. Der Begriff "nahe Angehörige" ist von jenem der Familienangehörigen (Verwandten) deutlich abzugrenzen, weil auch zwischen Familienangehörigen nicht immer eine enge Nahebeziehung besteht. Der Begriff "Angehörige" ist also nicht im rechtlichen Sinn zu verstehen, sondern nach den tatsächlichen Lebensverhältnissen. Der Zusatz "nahe" drückt aus, dass nur ein kleiner Personenkreis dafür in Frage kommt. Durch das Abstellen auf die enge Nahebeziehung wird sichergestellt, dass nur jene Personen dazu zählen, die durch die Tötung oder Verletzung des Erstgeschädigten schweres seelisches Leid erfahren.     Abstract: In this pathbreaking study, Amal Jamal analyzes the consumption of media by Arab citizens of Israel as a type of communicative behavior and a form of political action. Drawing on extensive public opinion survey data, he describes perceptions and use of media ranging from Arabic Israeli newspapers to satellite television broadcasts from throughout the Middle East. By participating in this semi-autonomous Arab public sphere, the average Arab citizen can connect with a wider Arab world beyond the boundaries of the Israeli state. Jamal shows how media aid the community's ability to resist the state's domination, protect its Palestinian national identity, and promote its civic status.
