    Abstract: In der Imkerei G. Oliva in Solarino bei Syrakus wird noch mit traditionellen Tunnelstöcken aus den Stengeln der Ferulastaude gearbeitet. Zur Verhinderung der Schwarmbildung findet im Frühjahr die "Partitura" statt, die Ablegerbildung, bei der die Völkerzahl verdoppelt wird. - Im September wird Eukalyptushonig geerntet. Aus Honigwabenstampfmasse wird mit der Honigpresse Preßhonig gewonnen. Doch werden Honigwaben auch ausgeschleudert. Aus den Wabenresten wird mit Hilfe der Wachspresse Wachs gewonnen, das heute zur Herstellung von Mittelwänden dient.

    Abstract: The cooper Josef Schölzhorn from Eisacktal shows the manufacture of a 100-litre wine cask by hand. Chestnut boards are cut and shaped with the jointer into staves. The staves are arranged upright in a few hoops and drawn together over the fire by means of a rope. The bottoms are measured with compasses and inserted, further hoops are put in place, and finally the bung-hole and tap-hole are bored.

    Abstract: Auf der offenen Feuerstelle in einer Almhütte erhitzt die Bäuerin Milch in einem großen Kupferkessel, der an einem Schwenkarm hängt. Durch Zugabe von Labpulver und Salz wird die Milch zum Gerinnen gebracht. Nach Abschöpfen des Käsewassers wird die Käsemasse in eine Holzform gefüllt, festgedrückt und mit Steinen beschwert. Bevor die überstehenden Ränder des fertigen Käses abgeschnitten werden, wird er mit Salz eingerieben.
    Abstract: On an Alpine farm in St. Magdalena (South Tyrol) the farmer's wife makes cheese: She pours milk into a large copper vessel hanging on a turning arm over the hearth and heats it. As rennet she uses a powder mixed water and a pinch of salt. She stirs the milk continuously and watches the temperature. At 40-50°C she adds two thirds of the rennet and reduces the heat. Zum Formen benutzen sie einen preßluft- und einen wassergetriebenen Fallhammer. Die endgültige Form (nach Verkaufsgebiet verschieden) entsteht durch Pressen, Stanzen und Schleifen. Anschließend werden die Spaten gebündelt.
    Abstract: At his old water-driven hammer forge (overshot water wheel) at Bienno (Brescia Province) the 47-year-old smith Comensoli makes with his assistant spades from scrap-iron. They produce in series 80 spades per day. The iron is moulded by a compressed air hammer and by a drop hammer driven by water power. The final shaping (varying according to the selling territory) is is done by pressing, punching, and grinding. The finished spades are tied in bundles for delivery.

The film shows the entire work-process, beginning with the cutting of the hide, the removing of the hair, and the plaiting itself to the greasing and racking of the finished product. Leather cords of this kind were used to bind hay, logs of wood, and other materials during transport.

Nach dem Tischgebet werden nacheinander Milchsuppe und "Schweißnudel" (eine Mehlspeise) mit Milch aufgetragen. Gegessen wird aus einer gemeinsamen Schüssel, die in der Mitte des Tisches steht.     Abstract: Auf der offenen Feuerstelle in einer Almhütte wird in einer Pfanne Plente aus Butter, Salz, Wasser und Maismehl unter ständigem Rühren zubereitet. Auf dem heißen Brei werden Butter und Käse verteilt. Nach einem Gebet beginnt das gemeinsame Mahl, indem jeder mit seinem Löffel in die Pfanne (die auf einem hölzernen Pfannenhalter auf den Tisch kommt) nach Plente und in eine gemeinsame Schüssel nach Milch greift.
    Abstract: One of the ordinary dishes in the Gsies valley is a maize-pap called plente. Plente is cooked in a pan set on the fireplace in the centre of the Alpine dairy-farm. Butter is melted and salt and water are added. Then maize-flour is mixed in the water, stirred and boiled into a pap. To achieve a better detaching of the crust of the pap, the edge of the pan is repeatedly smeared with run butter. Finally pats of butter and cheese are distributed on the hot pap. The pan is set in a wooden pan-holder and put on the table with bowls of milk. After praying everybody begins to eat, dipping his spoon into the pan of plente and into the bowl of milk.

    Abstract: Auf der offenen Feuerstelle in einer Almhütte werden in einem großen Kupferkessel Milch und Molke zum Gerinnen gebracht. Der Topfen wird abgeschöpft und in Holzschalen gelegt, bis die Molke abgeflossen ist. Der fertige Topfen wird dann mit Kümmel und Anis verknetet und in faustgroßen, kegelförmigen Klumpen auf ein Holzbrett gestellt.
    Abstract: A large copper vessel with milk is hanging over the fireplace in an alpine dairy-hut. After removing impurities the milk is covered and heated. When the milk is near the boiling point, whey is added and little by little the milk, constantly controlled with the wooden ladle, is coagulated by stirring, adding more whey and regulating the temperature of the fire. Finally a little cold water is added. The curd is then taken out of the vessel and placed into wooden bowls to run the whey off. The whey remaining in the vessel is poured in a wooden bucket and stored. The curd is kneaded with caraway seed and anis and shaped on a wooden board into conical lumps big as a fist.

    Abstract: In der Schmiede der Familie Franzoni in Bienno (Provinz Brescia) arbeitet der 85jährige Vater mit seinen drei Söhnen und einem Gehilfen. Sie stellen in Serienproduktion etwa 80 nach oben ausladende Eimer pro Tag her: Vorbereitung des Materials (Eisenplatten aus Schrottbeständen), Formen und Erwärmen der Platten, Hämmern mit Fallhammer (oberschlächtiges Wasserrad) zur Eimerform, Beschneiden, Endbearbeitung, Anbringen von Henkeln.
    Abstract: Working on a forge, whose origins date back to the XVII century A. D., the father and sons of an artisan family of Bienno in the province of Brescia, N. Italy, manufacture, metal buckets for brickwork. They work with slabs of re-usable iron, which are heated in a furnace adapted to naphtha oil-firing. The draught for blowing the furnace is created by an acient system based on the fall of water. The process begins with the preparation of the material. An iron slab is shaped to the form required for a container mould, into which flat beaten-out iron plates are inserted seven at a time. The batch is then heated and pounded into bucket form by a water-powered drop-hammer. After shearing and finishing, the buckets are fitted on two sides with handles and stacked one inside the other. The final product is much wider at the drop than at the bottom, a shape traditionally used for conveying mortar and other light building materials.

    Abstract: In seiner Holzwerkstatt in St. Magdalena (Gsiestal) stellt Konrad Geitel aus Zirbelholzdauben, die mit Eisenreifen zusammengehalten werden, ein Stoßbutterfaß mit Stempel, Deckel und Haltebrett her. Das Butterfaß wird in die kreisrunde Öffnung des Haltebretts gestellt und von Halteseilen mit Holzhaken festgehalten. Zum Abschluß werden das Butterfaß mit roter und die Eisenreifen mit grüner Ölfarbe bemalt.
    Abstract: In his small woodworking shop at St. Magdalena (Gsiestal) Konrad Gietel is making staves from pine wood for a churn. First he assembles the staves, then he applies cold glue, and finally he fits iron straps around the churn to keep the staves tightly together. After some time, while the glue has set, rough patches on the wood are removed with a plane, and the inside and outside surfaces are made smooth. A bottom piece is fitted. Gietel has cut a wooden die and fits a long handle. He makes the cover plug on a wood turning lathe, and then fits the churning board with the ropes. The churn (Schlacker) is finished by painting the staves red and the iron straps green.

    Abstract: In St. Magdalena (Gsiestal) bereitet der Weißberg-Bauer seine oberschlächtige Wassermühle zum Mahlgang vor. Er reinigt und schärft die Mühlsteine, indem er die Mahlflächen des Laufers und Legers mit dem Flachspitzhammer und dem Flachriffelhammer bearbeitet. Nach dem Zusammensetzen der Mahlvorrichtung wird die Technik der Kraftübertragung vom Schaufelrad über den Mittelpam zum Langeisen, und damit zum Mahlstein, gezeigt. Im Anschluß daran erfolgt der erste Mahlgang.
    Abstract: The farmer "Weißbergbauer" is getting his private mill ready for operation. He cleans the millstones and sharpens them. He works the surface of the runner (upper millstone) and of the bottom millstone with a pointed flat hammer and a flat fluting hammer, respectively. After the grinding mechanism is assembled, the film shows the technique of transferring the power from the bucket wheel through the central shaft to the long iron and thus to the millstone. Then follows an initial milling operation.

    Abstract: In der Macherstube eines Bauernhofes in St. Jakob (Ahrntal) werden drei 3-4 m lange Baumstämme mit einem 2,5 m langen Rohrbohrer ausgehöhlt und die dickeren Enden konisch erweitert. Dann erfolgt das Verlegen eines Rohres in einen kleinen Graben und das Zuspitzen des dünnen Endes mit einem Beil. Anschließend wird es mit einem Zieheisen geglättet und in das liegengebliebene alte Stück des Wasserrohres eingeschoben. Undichte Stellen werden mit Moos abgedichtet. Die Rohre dienen als Wasserleitung von der Quelle zum Hof.
    Abstract: The film shows how a water supply made of trunks is being repaired. Trunks of 3 - 4 meters length are hollowed out; a 2.5 m long tube drill is used. The thick ends of these wooden tubes are widened and cone-shaped with a special tool (kachler). In the field, the thin ends of the trunks are tapered off with an axe and smoothed with a draw knife, and assembled. One tube is placed into a small ditch in the ground. Leakages are packed with moss as sealing material. The tubes fitted together serve as water supply from a well to the farm buildings.

    Abstract: Am Vorabend bereitet die Bäuerin den Vorteig aus Sauerteig, 6 kg Roggenmehl und Wasser. Das Kneten des Teiges (60 kg Roggenmehl, Vorteig, 600 g Salz, Eier, etwa 25-27 l Wasser) und das Heizen des in der Küche stehenden Backofens mit Lärchen- und Birkenholz sowie das Einschießen der Brote übernimmt der Bauer. Das Einkneten von Anis in den Teig, das Formen der Ringbrote und Brotpuppen sind Frauenarbeit. Die fertigen Ringbrote werden auf Holzstangen im oberen Stockwerk über Monate gelagert.
    Abstract: The farmer's wife makes the pre-dough from leaven, 6 kg rye flour and water. The farmer kneads the dough (60 kg rye flour, pre-dough, 600 g salt, eggs, 25-27 l water), heats the oven with larch and birch wood and loads the oven. Kneading anise into the dough and forming ring bread and bread puppets is woman's work. The ring breads are stored for months on wooden poles.

    Abstract: Hay-harvesting on a high alpine pasture in the Gsies valley with all operations belonging to it: mowing the grass, sharpening and whetting the scythe, tedding and raking the hay, and carrying the hay into the log-cabin. Beside harvesting we also see the behaviour of the workers at meal, preparing the food and saying grace. The film points out the coordination of the works of the different members of the group. Some operations can hardly be carried out without assistance (e. g. the lifting of the hay charge to be carried in).

    Abstract: Im Futterhaus werden die Stengel von den Samenkapseln durch Riffeln befreit und in dünnen Lagen auf einem Wiesenstück ausgebreitet, wo sie einen Fäulnisprozeß durchmachen. Anschließend werden die Stengel in einer abseits vom Gehöft liegenden Dörrgrube gedörrt, dann gebrochen und auf dem Hofplatz gehechelt.
    Abstract: The gradual transformation of flax-stalks into spinning fibres is shown at different working places on the domain of a farm in St. Magdalena in the Gsieser valley of South Tyrol. First of all, the seminal capsules are removed from the stalks. This work is carried out in the feeding house. After this the stalks - now without capsules - are spread out over grass in thin layers where they go through the decaying process under the influence of the weather - this process is not shown in the film. In a drying pit, which lies apart from the farm, the stalks are then dried and broken and are, finally, combed on the courtyard.

    Abstract: Nach dem Zetteln (mit Hilfe von Zettelgatter und Haspel) und Aufziehen der Kette auf den Kettbaum sowie nach dem Schlichten der Kette beginnt der Webvorgang: Der Weber trägt den Schuß mit dem Schiffchen ein, wobei er jeden Eintrag mit dem Anschlagkamm fest an das Gewebe andrückt. Die Fachbildung erfolgt durch die Betätigung der Tritte, die mit den Schäften in Verbindung stehen. Nach Beendigung der Webarbeit wird der fertige Stoff (Leinwandbindung) vom Warenbaum abgenommen und kontrolliert.
    Abstract: After preparing the warp by means of the warping frame and reel the warp is fixed to the loom. After fixing the front end of the warp to the take up roller and dressing the warp threads, the weaving process is started: The weaver inserts the weft by a shuttle and beats each weft thread into its appointed position in the fabric by means of the reed. By stepping on the pedals, which are connected to the shaft, the different sheds are formed. After finishing the weaving process the weaver removes the linen cloth (plain weave) from the loom and checks it.

Die Garben werden auf dem Boden des Stadels ausgebreitet und mit dem Flegel so lange geschlagen, bis die Körner herausgefallen sind. Anschließend wird das Korn mit Hilfe eines Reinigungsgerätes, der sog. Windmühle, von Staub und Spreu gereinigt.
    Abstract: At St. Magdalena (Gsiestal) the rye is threshed with the help of relatives and neighbours. The crop is spread out on the barn-floor and the grains are beaten out with flails. Finally the grain is separated from chaff and dust by meanss of the so-called windmill.

Thereafter, the yarn is boild in potash leach, and then rinsed twice: one time in ice-cold running water of a brook, and another time in hot water at the house. After cleaning the yarn is dried, rippled to remove wood particles, and finally put on the spools.

    Abstract: Heu, das aus einer verschneiten Blockhütte herausgezogen wurde, wird gebündelt, auf Farkel verladen und mit Hilfe von losen Kufen zum Waldrand gezogen. Am Steilhang werden die Kufen herausgezogen, um eine Bremswirkung zu erreichen. Unten angekommen, wird das Heu auf Schlitten umgeladen und zum Hof gebracht.
    Abstract: Farmers move to an Alpine pasture to get hay from a block hut. On arrival there the hut is opened. They hay is being bundles and dragged on a Farkel (sort of wooden sledge) to the end of the forest. For the transport movable skids are important. Downwards steep slopes the hay bundles must be braked. Where the slopes are less steep skids are used to reduce the braking effect. At the end of the forest the hay is loaded onto bigger sledges and taken to the farmerhouse.

The film presents both spinning procedures in comparison, in order to point out the different working methods. It shows all the stages of the spinning process from the fastening of the material, the drawing out of the starting thread, the feeding of the thread into the spindle, and the continuous spinning to the removing of the finished bobbin.

    Abstract: Mit Hilfe eines kleinen Webgerätes stellt der Weißberg-Bauer in St. Magdalena (Gsiestal) ein Gebrauchsband aus Leinengarn her: Von Garnspulen, auf Querstäben eines Rahmens angebracht, werden die einzelnen Fäden der Kette abgewickelt, die dann durch ein feststehendes Webebrett gezogen und auf eine Rolle gewickelt werden. Anschließend webt der Bauer das Band, indem er mittels eines vereinfachten Weberschiffchens den Schuß in die Kette einführt.
    Abstract: In the "Stube" of the Weißberg-Hof in St. Magdalena, situated in the Gsieser Valley in South Tyrol, the formation stages of a "tape" (utilliy tape) are shown. First, the farmer prepares the small tape-Ioom for weaving. The individual threads of the "warp" are fed from bobbins attached to the horizontal bars of a frame, pulled through a fixed "board", and wound onto a roller. The farmer then weaves the "tape" by feeding the "weft" into the "warp", using a simplified form of shuttle.

    Abstract: Der Unterlacher-Bauer Vitus Marcher sen. in St. Jakob (Ahrntal) stellt in der Stube seines Hauses einen Tragkorb her: in ein schmales Bodenbrett werden Stöcke eingesetzt, die nach oben hin ausladend mit den gespaltenen Flechtstreifen aus Zirbelkieferholz eingeflochten werden. Die Traggurte werden aus Birkenruten gedreht.
    Abstract: Making of a pannier in the parlour of the Unterlacher-Hof at ST. Jakob (Ahrntal). The pannier consists of a narrow wooden base into which the canes are fitted, which then spread out towards the top and are woven into the split strips of wicker made of stone pine (Pinus cembra L.).

    Abstract: Aus Roggenmehl (3/4), einem Gemisch aus Weizen- und Gerstenmehl (1/4), Sauerteig, Salz, Brotgewürzen (Kümmel, Koriander, Anis, Neugewürz) und Wasser bereitet der Weißberg-Bauer in St. Magdalena (Gsiestal) den Brotteig für den Jahresbedarf. Die flachen Fladenbrote (etwa 1700 Stück) werden in dem außerhalb des Wohnhauses stehenden Backofen, der mit Lärchenholz beheizt wird, gebacken. An der Arbeit, die zwei Tage und eine Nacht dauert, nimmt die ganze Familie teil.
    Abstract: The "Weißberg" farmer at St. Magdalena in Gsiestal mixes the dough for the annual bread supply. The dough consists of rye flour (3/4), a mixture of wheat and barley flours (1/4), leaven, salt, condiments (caraway-seed, soriander, anise, allspice), and water. The round flat loaves (about 1700) are baked in the oven outside the house, heated with larch wood. The work, carried out by all the family, requires two days and one night.

    Abstract: Geschnitten wird den Hang hinunter, jeweils auf das noch stehende Getreide zu. Der geschnittene Roggen wird mit der Sichel hochgehoben und zu Garben gebunden. Zum Trocknen kommen 15 Garben mit den Ähren nach unten auf ein Holzgestell (Mandlan). Die vorletzte und letzte Garbe werden auseinandergefächelt wie eine Kappe und mit heraushängenden Halmen verbunden. Vier Mandlan ergeben einen Schober. Die trockenen Mandlan werden auf dem Rücken in das Futterhaus getragen.
    Abstract: In late July, early August the rye is harvested. Before harvesting, which is done by all members of the family, the reaping-tools are sharpened by beating the cutting-edges flat. During reaping the tools are sharpened again with a whet stone. When the reaped rye is bound, it is put on wooden frames and left to dry. The dried rye is carried into the barn.

    Abstract: In St. Jakob (Ahrntal) wird das Vieh vom Ortspfarrer gesegnet (27.5.1963). Auf der langen Talstraße ziehen die Herden taleinwärts nach Prettau. Am Spätnachmittag erreichen sie die Obere Tauernalm; dort nächtigen sie. Am nächsten Morgen beginnt der Aufstieg durch Schneefelder zum Tauern. Steil geht der Weg jenseits des 2634 m hohen Joches ins Windbachtal hinunter.
    Abstract: At St. Jakob (Ahrntal) the local priest blesses the cattle (27.5.1963). It takes two days to lead the herds across snowfields up to their Alpine pasture.
