Kurzfassung: The Routledge Handbook of Childhood Studies and Global Development explores how global development agendas and processes of economic development influence children's lives. It demonstrates that children are not only the frequent targets or objects of development but that they also shape and influence processes of economic, political and sociocultural development. The handbook makes the case for the importance of placing children at the heart of development debates and demonstrates how researchers, policymakers and practitioners can engage children in development. Through reports on field research as well as a critical engagement with theories in development studies and childhood studies, contributors contest normative assumptions about childhood and global development. They tease out and tease apart the complex social, historical, cultural, economic, epidemiological, ecological, geopolitical, and institutional processes transforming what it means to be young in the world today. Showcasing research from both established scholars and early career researchers, and with particular prominence given to the work of authors from the global south, this book will be an essential reference for policymakers, practitioners, and for researchers and students across childhood studies, education, geography, sociology, and global development

Kurzfassung: "South Africans and international commentators alike have held the country up as a global icon of racial reconciliation, using phrases like the "South African Option" and the "South African Miracle" to describe the transition from apartheid to democracy. For many, the lingering effects of histories of racial oppression are obvious. They are reflected in racial disparities in education and income, racially segregated neighborhoods, and everyday racial profiling and discrimination. But, for others, racism is a thing of the past, unrelated to individuals' opportunities in the present. Where and when do people learn about the relevance of the past for understanding and addressing contemporary racial inequality? In Distancing the Past , Chana Teeger identifies high school history classrooms as a crucial site where we learn such lessons. Focusing on the case of South Africa, she follows a group of students as they confront their country's apartheid past in desegregated schools.
Kurzfassung: She shows how young people are taught that racism is over, even as they encounter its ongoing effects in their everyday lives. These lessons help teachers avoid difficult feelings in their classrooms like like guilt and anger and reinforce nation-building myths. But these images and elisions belie the realities of enduring structures of racialized inequality and their deployment reinforces the idea that the past is done and dusted. This matters because if racism has indeed been dealt with then there is nothing left to do, no policies left to enact, but if the playing field is not equal then ignoring these legacies means that inequities can continue unchecked. These ideas are not unique to South Africa. They form the basis of "color-blindness" in a variety of contexts. But where do such ideas come from? And how do they take hold? Distancing the Past describes a variety of subtle yet powerful ways through which the past can be recalled but its legacies ignored.
Kurzfassung: Focusing on South Africa's first generation born into democracy, Teeger presents a potent view view of how racial ideologies are remade in the aftermath of de jure segregation, offering lessons for South Africa and beyond"--

Kurzfassung: "Indonesia is one of the most diverse countries in the world in terms of religion, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status, but also in the complexity of its education system. Youth, Education, and Islamic Radicalism examines the roots of religious intolerance among young Indonesians and explores the various ways in which educated youth navigate radical ideologies amid growing religious conservatism. The book presents nuanced explanations as to why one person becomes radicalized while another does not, calling into question the common assumption that religious radicalism is directly connected to terrorism. It problematizes the notion that the university is a significant hub, trigger, or birthplace of radicalization by asking: What makes education attractive for extremist recruitment? What shapes students' views? Under what circumstances do radicalization and deradicalization processes of educated youth take place? Youth, Education, and Islamic Radicalism identifies a constellation of factors that shape young people's views of religious diversity in Indonesia, demonstrating the ways in which they become radicalized in the first place, and how, in some cases, they deradicalize themselves"--

Kurzfassung: Education remains the greatest indicator of life chances in Britain. What we study, where we study, and how long for shape all aspects of our lives. Our careers, our long-term health, our wealth and security are all moulded in the classroom. But who we are ultimately matters the most. In this book, Professor Kalwant Bhopal shows how race still determines who gains the best education in Britain, and who falls by the wayside. Through case studies, original research and interviews with students, teachers, and academics alike, she reveals how the construction of privilege starts at a young age: with Whiteness taking some students on a gilded path from cradle to career, while many still struggle to build the futures they deserve. This book highlights how classrooms and lecture halls are at the centre of perpetuating white privilege - and how racism continues to exist in Britain

Kurzfassung: "This sixth edition of The Sociology of Childhood, like the first five editions (published in 1997, 2005, 2011, 2015, and 2018), is about children and childhood from a sociological perspective. A major change in this edition is Judson Everitt joins William Corsaro as second author. This edition, like earlier ones, brings together many of Corsaro's ideas and experiences gained from his research and teaching in this area over the past 50 years. Everitt brings special expertise in the sociology of education along with the social problems of children and youth. Sociology has now established a tradition for studying children and childhood; although still understudied, these are no longer relegated to the margins of the field. There are now, in addition to the Sociology of Childhood, other basic texts in sociology on children and childhood, and a growing number of courses on the sociology of childhood are now offered at colleges and universities. Important theoretical and empirical work has been done by many scholars who advocate the conceptual autonomy of children and childhood (Alanen, 2009; Alanen et al., 2015; Boocock & Scott, 2005; Bragg & Kehily, 2013; Corsaro, 2003; Gabriel, 2017; James et al., 1998; Lee, 2001; Leonard, 2015; Mayall, 2002; McNamee, 2016; Prout, 2005; Qvortrup, 2009; Thorne, 1987; Wells, 2021; Wyness, 2018). Their work focuses on children as the basic units and categories of study. Children and childhood become the center of analysis; they are no longer linked to other categories, such as families or schools, upon which they are supposedly dependent (Qvortrup, 1994a; 2009). In addition, we have seen substantial growth in membership in the research section of Sociology of Children and Youth in the American Sociological Association and in the thematic group on Sociology of Childhood in the International Sociological Association"--

Kurzfassung: This book is a resource for researchers at every level, from first-year undergraduates to research reporters at corporations and government offices. Seasoned researchers and educators, the authors present an updated third edition of their classic handbook which explains how to build an argument that motivates readers to accept a claim; how to anticipate the reservations of readers and to respond to them appropriately; and how to create introductions and conclusions that answer that most demanding question,"So what?". It includes an expanded discussion of the essential early stages of a research task: planning and drafting a paper. The authors have revised and fully updated their section on electronic research, emphasizing the need to distinguish between trustworthy sources (such as those found in libraries) and less reliable sources found with a quick Web search. A chapter on warrants has also been thoroughly reviewed to make this difficult subject easier for researchers. Throughout, the authors have preserved the amiable tone, the reliable voice, and the sense of directness that have made this book indispensable for anyone undertaking a research project.

Kurzfassung: Focusing on significant and cutting-edge preoccupations within children’s literature scholarship, The Routledge Companion to Children’s Literature and Culture presents a comprehensive overview of print, digital, and electronic texts for children aged zero to thirteen as forms of world literature participating in a panoply of identity formations. Offering five distinct sections, this volume: Familiarizes students and beginning scholars with key concepts and methodological resources guiding contemporary inquiry into children’s literature Describes the major media formats and genres for texts expressly addressing children Considers the production, distribution, and valuing of children’s books from an assortment of historical and contemporary perspectives, highlighting context as a driver of content Maps how children’s texts have historically presumed and prescribed certain identities on the part of their readers, sometimes addressing readers who share some part of the author’s identity, sometimes seeking to educate the reader about a presumed “other,” and in recent decades increasingly foregrounding identities once lacking visibility and voice Explores the historical evolutions and trans-regional contacts and (inter)connections in the long process of the formation of global children’s literature, highlighting issues such as retranslation, transnationalism, transculturality, and new digital formats for considering cultural crossings and renegotiations in the production of children’s literature Methodically presented and contextualized, this volume is an engaging introduction to this expanding and multifaceted field

Kurzfassung: This book offers a multidisciplinary perspective on the ways in which the careful integration of AI might enhance learning outcomes. By inviting dialogue between engineering (what is possible) and pedagogy (what might be desirable), the book offers a holistic view of AI's potential for education. Offering both case studies of practical implementation and pedagogically informed frameworks, it focuses on appropriately integrating technology for educational benefit, presenting a uniquely broad view. The contributors, who are both educators and technically proficient, bring insights into teaching and assessment approaches, research questions, and technological affordances or constraints. Essential for researchers, educators, and policymakers navigating the rapidly evolving educational technology landscape as AI becomes increasingly prevalent in every aspect of life.

Kurzfassung: "'New speakers' is a term used to describe those who have learnt a minority language not within their home or community settings, but through bilingual education, immersion or migration. Looking specifically at the impact of new speakers on language policy, this book provides an authoritative and detailed examination of minority language policy in Wales, Scotland, Ireland, the Basque Autonomous Community, Navarre, Catalonia and Galicia. Based on interviews with politicians, senior civil servants, academics and civil society activists, it assesses the extent to which interventions derived from a new speakers' perspective has been incorporated into official language practice. It describes several challenges faced by new speakers, before proposing specific recommendations on how to integrate them into established minority language communities. Shedding new light on the deeper issues faced by minority language communities, it is essential reading for students and researchers in sociolinguistics, language policy and planning, language education, bi- and multilingualism"--

Kurzfassung: "From as early as the 1920s, state policy towards children in south India was framed through the lens of a universal ideal of modern childhood. This reflected the participation of policymakers and civil society activists in global discourses of child saving and the new opportunities of governance under the constitutional reforms of 1919. Children became viewed as both objects to be saved and investments as future citizens. The book considers how adults used this concept of universal childhood to conceptualise themselves as both modern and avuncular, gaining authority through an appropriation of familial terms as well as the claim to modern, scientific expertise. Through a detailed study of education, health and juvenile justice, the book reveals that the implementation of policy was still informed by other markers of difference, and contrasts adult intentions with the autobiographical memories of school, family and peer relationships"--

Kurzfassung: "Building Boys offers tips and tools that parents can use to help boys move beyond persistent gender stereotypes to full humanity. Understanding, acknowledging, and respecting male development is key to facilitating boys' growth and making the world a safer place for humans of all genders."--
Kurzfassung: Confounded by rapidly changing gender norms, today's parents are attempting to raise kind, compassionate, emotionally sensitive boys in a society that simultaneously rewards stereotypical masculinity and is increasingly hostile to boys. Making the world safer for women and girls is not the only reason to rethink our boy raising practices: current culture harms our boys too. Fink offers rules that parents can use to guide their parenting choices: guidelines that are as relevant to parenting toddlers as they are to parenting teenagers. -- adapted from jacket

Kurzfassung: "The second edition of Digital Literacy provides a highly focused exploration of key critical concepts in understanding digital media in a clear, engaging and accessible way for an introductory audience. Core to the books approach is its comparison of digital literacy perspectives across different cultures, highlighting the significant disparity in digital privacy and regulation of technology companies across countries, to expand on the discourse surrounding modern digital engagement. Prescient issues are examined in depth, such as decline of traditional media, rise of Big Tech, and erosion of privacy and democratic ideals. Important themes explored in chapters across the book include digital Identity, the internet as infrastructure, the web as a collaborative tool, and domestic and global digital divides. The new edition also explores digital literacy and the pandemic, as well as the growing body of research around the effects and impact of the digital technologies we use every day. There are also useful Applied Skills Appendices outlining core areas of digital practice. The text is an ideal resource for students and scholars of mass communication, media literacy, digital information literacy, and digital technology courses, as well as for all those wanting to know more about the deep on-going impact of communication technologies on our lives"--

Kurzfassung: 'New speakers' is a term used to describe those who have learnt a minority language not within their home or community settings, but through bilingual education, immersion or migration. Shedding new light on the deeper issues faced by minority language communities, it is essential reading for students and researchers in sociolinguistics, language policy and planning, language education, bi- and multilingualism.

Kurzfassung: Inclusion of people with disabilities has become one of the priorities of the social policy in the European Union and in the Russian Federation, in part, in connection with the increasing ratification of the UN CRPD worldwide and problems induced by the “ageing” society. However, people with hearing loss and their specific needs are often overlooked in comparison with more visible disabilities. The main purpose of this study is to look into and compare the mechanisms and results of social inclusion of hard of hearing people (HoH) in Russia and Germany and to contribute with empirically grounded findings to the research on hard of hearing people of which there is a lack in the disability research field. An analysis of the social and disability related policies in both countries and a comparison of the legal and institutional arrangements and opportunities provides the framework for the empirical analysis (questionnaire, interviews with HoH persons, NGOs and with experts). The appraisal of the policies and infrastructures is following the conceptual and normative benchmarks of the Disability studies. The comparative analysis is focused on access of HoH people to education and employment, to rehabilitation, information and communication – the fields critical to inclusion and participation. The empirical research comprises an explorative non-representative questionnaire survey with a) 190 young respondents aged 18-35 years (136 from Germany, 150 from Russia) b) 110 elderly respondents (65 or 60 years old and older; 43 from Germany, 67 from Russia), and expert interviews with the key persons in the field (researchers, political decision-makers, medical and educational professionals, hard of hearing NGO activists); furthermore, guided interviews with HoH people (N=11 in Germany, N=16 in Russia) were conducted. Commonalities and discrepancies in the national policy directions are discussed, examples of positive practices in medical, educational and professional rehabilitation and potential policy measures are suggested.

Kurzfassung: "Living in a post-truth world during an era of information wars, making sense of events is increasingly challenging for everyone. The fact that today's politics has found many retreating to ideologically "safe" spaces online where their world view is not contested makes the need for news and information literacy more significant. A contemporary world where disinformation and propaganda lead to a distrust of news sources calls for a new way to approach information and news literacy. Digital technology has seemingly made information and news easier to access, but it has also made sorting quality from nonsense a challenge. This book presents a different approach to news and information literacy which uses a flipped classroom method to create a student-centered learning experience. The course is guided by the educational philosophy of Paulo Freire and draws on theory and research from psychology, education and news and information literacy. the course begins with an exercise which reveals the role confirmation bias plays in how they judge the adequacy of news and information they retrieve through online search. The course engenders greater confidence in mastering the pitfalls of the Internet as students emerge from the empowered with self-knowledge and as well as a better understanding of the Internet. The book is relevant for news, information and media literacy teachers at levels of education, especially secondary and collegiate levels; curriculum specialists, continuing and adult education specialists and anyone who wants to better understand how we process news and information in the digital age"--

Kurzfassung: "Explores how institutional management of children's sexualities in reform schools, schools for the blind, African American industrial schools, and Native American boarding schools impacted children's future social, political, and economic opportunities - and thus produced queer childhoods.Tracing the US's investment in disciplining minoritarian sexualities since the late nineteenth century, Mary Zaborskis focuses on a ubiquitous but understudied figure: the queer child. Queer Childhoods examines the lived and literary experiences of children who attended reform schools, schools for the blind, African American industrial schools, and Native American boarding schools. In mapping the institutional terrain of queer childhoods in educational settings of the late nineteenth- and twentieth-century, the book offers an original archive of children's sexual and embodied experiences.

Kurzfassung: "In The Culture Trap, Derron Wallace argues that the overreliance on culture to explain Black students' achievement and behavior in schools is a trap that undermines the historical factors and institutional processes that shape how Black students experience schooling. This trap is consequential for a host of racial and ethnic minority youth in schools, including Black Caribbean young people in London and New York City. Since the 1920s, Black Caribbeans in New York have been considered a high-achieving Black model minority. Conversely, since the 1950s, Black Caribbeans in London have been regarded as a chronically underachieving minority. In both contexts, however, it is often suggested that Caribbean culture informs their status, whether as a celebrated minority in the US or as a demoted minority in Britain. Drawing on rich ethnographic observations, as well as interview and archival data from two of the largest public schools in London and New York City, Wallace interrogates the fault lines of these claims, and highlights the influence of colonialism, class, and context in shaping Black Caribbeans' educational experiences. As racial and ethnic achievement gaps and discussions about what to do about them persist in the US and Britain, Wallace shows how culture is at times used as an alibi for racism in schools, and points out what educators, parents, and students can do to change it.--

Kurzfassung: "The unprecedented rate of global, technological, and societal change calls for a radical, new understanding of literacy. This book offers a nuanced framework for making sense of literacy by addressing knowledge as contextualized, embodied, multimodal, and digitally mediated. In today's world of technological breakthroughs, social shifts, and rapid changes to the educational landscape, literacy can no longer be understood through established curriculum and static text structures. To prepare teachers, scholars, and researchers for the digital future, the book is organised around three themes-Mind and Materiality; Body and Senses; and Texts and Digital Semiotics-to shape readers' understanding of literacy. Opening up new interdisciplinary themes, Mills, Unsworth, and Scholes confront emerging issues for next-generation digital literacy practices. The volume helps new and established researchers rethink dynamic changes in the materiality of texts and their implications for the mind and body, and features recommendations for educational and professional practice"--

As a traditional social foundations reader, it focuses on the origins of the social foundations' disciplines, but it also includes contemporary pieces that directly impact students' lives today. Through these carefully curated readings, students will grasp the complexity and connection between contemporary issues in education. Part I contains "essential texts," selections from works widely regarded as central to the development of the field, which lay the basis of further study for any serious student of education. Part II looks at multidisciplinary directions of current foundations of education scholarship. An introductory essay by the editors and discussion questions throughout the text further highlight the selections' continued importance and application to today's most pressing educational issues. By addressing the past, present, and future of social foundations, this volume contends skillfully with ever-shifting education policies and school demographics"--

Kurzfassung: In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, thousands of pupils attended boarding schools in various places across the globe. Their experiences were vastly different, yet they all had in common that they were separated from their families and childhood friends for a period of time in order to sleep, eat, learn and move within the limited spatial sites of the boarding school. This book frames these 'boarding schools' as a global and transcultural phenomenon that is part of larger political and social developments of European imperialism, the Cold War, and independence movements. Drawing together case studies from colonial South Africa, colonial India, Dutch Indonesia, early twentieth-century Nigeria, Fascist Spain, Ghana, Nazi Germany, nineteenth-century Ireland, North America and the Soviet Union, this edited collection examines the ways in which boarding schools extracted pupils from their original social background in order to train, mold and shape them so that they could fit into the perceived position in broader society. The book makes the broader argument that framing boarding schools as a global phenomenon is imperative for a deepened understanding of the global and transnational networks that linked people as well as ideas and practices of education and childhood in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries

Kurzfassung: "In The Family Firm, Brown professor of economics and mom of two Emily Oster offers a classic business school framework for data-driven parents to think more deliberately about the key issues of the elementary years: school, health, extracurricular activities, and more. Unlike the hourly challenges of infant parenting, the big questions in this age come up less frequently. But we live with the consequences of our decisions for much longer. What's the right kind of school and at what age should a particular kid start? How do you encourage a healthy diet? Should kids play a sport and how seriously? How do you think smartly about encouraging children's independence? Along with these bigger questions, Oster investigates how to navigate the complexity of day-to-day family logistics. Making these decisions is less about finding the specific answer and more about taking the right approach. Parents of this age are often still working in baby mode, which is to say, under stress and on the fly. That is a classic management problem, and Oster takes a page from her time as a business school professor at the University of Chicago to show us that thoughtful business process can help smooth out tough family decisions. The Family Firm is a smart and winning guide to how to think clearly--and with less ambient stress--about the key decisions of the elementary school years. We all know parenting is a full-time job, so maybe it's time we start treating it like one"--

Kurzfassung: Paradoxes of Media and Information Literacy contributes to ongoing conversations about control of knowledge and different ways of knowing. It does so by analysing why media and information literacy (MIL) is proposed as a solution for addressing the current information crisis. Questioning why MIL is commonly believed to wield such power, the book throws into sharp relief several paradoxes that are built into common understandings of such literacies. Haider and Sundin take the reader on a journey across different fields of practice, research and policymaking, including librarianship, information studies, teaching and journalism, media and communication and the educational sciences. The authors also consider national information policy proposals and the recommendations of NGOs or international bodies, such as UNESCO and the OECD. Showing that MIL plays an active role in contemporary controversies, such as those on climate change or vaccination, Haider and Sundin argue that such controversies challenge existing notions of fact and ignorance, trust and doubt, and our understanding of information access and information control. The book thus argues for the need to unpack and understand the contradictions forming around these notions in relation to MIL, rather than attempting to arrive at a single, comprehensive definition. Paradoxes of Media and Information Literacy combines careful analytical and conceptual discussions with an in-depth understanding of information practices and of the contemporary information infrastructure. It is essential reading for scholars and students engaged in library and information studies, media and communication, journalism studies and the educational sciences

Kurzfassung: "Issues of cultural identity and cultural heritage are at the heart of contemporary discourses in many parts of the world. They are used to identify and address the inequalities by marginalized groups; however, they also feed the re-nationalization and ethno-purist fantasies. But what exactly is culture? In this volume, the authors explore how culture is conceptualized and practised by young people in eight countries in numerous and very diverse contexts - schools, interest clubs, organizations, and informal youth groups. The chapters show that concepts of culture vary widely within and across sites, regions, and countries, highlighting the common, as well as particular, challenges that notions of identity and heritage pose for young people who often aspire to an inclusive and open society"--

Kurzfassung: "In this chapter, we introduce the idea of a new framework for research. Within our writing, we define our framework as a model for practice that can be used by people within the organization: these could be leaders, colleagues, researcher-practitioners, and evaluators to improve practice and solve problems in context. The book is about providing support for the thousands of people in organizations who are tasked with finding and solving problems, whether they are formal internal evaluators or not. Our book will enhance organizational capacity to understand and develop these frameworks. Our goal is to introduce this integrated framework in a way that you, our readers can see its connection to your settings, and apply the underlying shared positions and principles to your own work. Finally, the described model serves as the foundation upon which all other chapters' contents have been developed"

Kurzfassung: "In his new book, Peter Hitchens describes the misjudgements made by politicians over the years that have led to the increase of class distinction and privilege in our education system. This is of course the opposite of what was intended, especially by former Minister of Education Shirley Williams and Margaret Thatcher, her successor in that role, who closed down many more Grammar Schools than Williams. Given that the cost of private secondary education is now in the region of £50,000 a year and the cream of Comprehensive Schools are now oversubscribed (William Ellis, Camden School for Girls, The Oratory, Cardinal Vaughan), parents are spending thousands on private tutoring and fee-paying prep schools in order to get their children into these academically excellent schools. Meanwhile hypocritical Labour politicians like Diane Abbott send their children to expensive private day schools. So, what alternatives - if any - are there? Peter Hitchens argues that in trying to bring about an educational system which is egalitarian, the politicians have created a system which is the exact opposite. And what's more, it is a system riddled with anomalies - Sixth Form Colleges select pupils on ability at the age of 15, which rules out any child who does not have major educational backing from home (heavy involvement by working parents or private tutors, for example) and academies also are selective, though they pretend not to be. This is an in-depth look at the British education system and what will happen if things don't change radically."

Kurzfassung: This book advocates the application of holistic and humanistic approaches in elderly care and services to achieve the goal of ageing with dignity in Hong Kong and Asia. It responds to the needs of an increasing ageing population that has to deal with related health needs in long-term care, community health and social services, particularly for chronic conditions and psychosocial support. The book consists of three sections on policy and development of aged care, holistic and humanistic care for older adults, and capacity building for ageing with dignity, respectively. Topics include the latest initiatives in aged care, appropriate services and delivery models, lifestyle modification, psychosocial and environmental considerations, professional development, technologies, and social capital. The chapters review and discuss these issues within a global context, illustrated by examples from Asian countries, underpinned by locally based empirical research. Contributors include academics and practitioners from diversified professional backgrounds that include medicine, nursing, pharmacy, traditional Chinese medicine, dietetics, and allied health. The book traverses into territories in the social sciences, life sciences, and sports sciences, while also touching on areas of business and administration, hospitality, law, public policy, and information technology in connection with public health. The contents serve as a topical reference for tertiary studies in ageing and related disciplines such as well-being and are also useful to policymakers, community and public health practitioners, health executives and interns working in areas of policy and practice pertinent to care development, health delivery models, planning, quality, ethics, better health promotion, professional training, and monitoring for older adults

Kurzfassung: "An overview of over 100 pedoagogical experiments in the field of architecture over the years and throughout the world"--
Kurzfassung: In the decades after World War II, new forms of learning transformed architectural education. These radical experiments sought to upend disciplinary foundations and conventional assumptions about the nature of architecture as much as they challenged modernist and colonial norms, decentered building, imagined new roles for the architect, and envisioned participatory forms of practice. Although many of the experimental programs were subsequently abandoned, terminated, or assimilated, they nevertheless helped shape and in some sense define architectural discourse and practice. This book explores and documents these radical pedagogies and efforts to defy architecture's status quo. The experiments include the adaptation of Bauhaus pedagogy as a means of "unlearning" under the conditions of decolonization in Africa; a movement to design for "every body," including the disabled, by architecture students and faculty at the University of California, Berkeley; the founding of a support network for women interested in the built environment, regardless of their academic backgrounds; and a design studio in the USSR that offered an alternative to the widespread functionalist approach in Soviet design. Viewed through their dissolution and afterlife as well as through their founding stories, these projects from the last century raise provocative questions about architecture's role in the new century.

Kurzfassung: "This book analyses the value orientation system of education in Tibet and examines the special education interventions aimed at children with disabilities in the region. The authors draw on their interviews with students, parents, and teachers to shed light on how education is viewed by the general population in Tibet. The book looks at themes such as traditional Tibetan education, the ways in which value orientation affects the development of disabled children, the role of special education interventions in building self-esteem and confidence, and the importance of developing pedagogical care and special schools in Tibet. It also reviews China's existing legal provisions and policies dedicated to persons with disabilities in comparison with Tibet. Finally, it emphasizes the role of practicing social acceptance for children with special educational needs and recommends developing special education interventions based on the cultural foundation and real social conditions of the ethnic group. Based on in-depth qualitative and quantitative research, this book will be of interest to teachers, students, and researchers of education, special education, curriculum studies, sociology, anthropology, disability studies, minority studies and cultural studies. It will also be useful for educationalists, special education institutions, policymakers, social activists, and NGOs"--

Kurzfassung: Most journal articles, edited volumes and monographs on youth language practices deal with one specific variety, one geographical setting, or with one specific continent. This volume bridges these different studies, and it approaches youth language from a much broader angle. A global framework and a diversity of methodologies enable a wider perspective that gives room to comparisons of youth’s manipulations and linguistic agency, transnational communicative practices and language contact scenarios. The research presented addresses structural features of everyday talk and text, youth identity issues related to specific purposes and contexts, and sociocultural emphases on ideologies and belonging. Combining insights into sociolinguistic and structural features of youth language, the volume includes case studies from Asia (Indonesia), Australia and Oceania (Arnhem Land, New Ireland), South America (the Amazon, Chile, Argentina), Europe (Germany, Spain) and Africa (Uganda, Nigeria, DR Congo, Central African Republic, South Africa). It expands on existing publications and offers a more comparative and "global" approach, without a division of youth’s strategies in terms of geographical space or language family. This collection, including a conceptual introduction, is of interest to scholars from several linguistic subfields working in different regional contexts as well as sociologists and anthropologists working in the field of adolescence and youth studies.

Kurzfassung: Despite the great interest in and the availability of enormous literature about education in Japan, this book is a translation of the first work written in Japanese on the history of literacy in Japan. The authors are each accomplished scholars of Japanese educational history, and each provides solid empirical evidence and original analyses of literacy in their own particular specialty, from Heian aristocrats, to religious sects in the medieval period, to Christian believers in the sixteenth century, to a variety of farmers and merchants in early modern times. 〈br〉〈br〉The book is unique in the sense that literacy in Japan is analysed with a high degree of methodological sophistication backed by empirical evidence in the form of 'signatures' or personal marks on documents, on so many topics. The result is to show the often fallacious and easy generalizations made about literacy in Japan and to show that evidence exists to enable more robust empirical investigations to be undertaken. This book will make it possible for the Japanese case to be used more meaningfully worldwide and in comparative studies of literacy

Kurzfassung: This book asks how far and in what way social inclusion policies are meeting the needs and rights of children and young people. Leading authors write from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines including social policy, education, geography and sociology. The book critically examines the concepts of participation and social inclusion and their links with children and childhoods and considers the geography of social inclusion and exclusion. It explores young people's own conceptualisations of social inclusion and exclusion; and examines how these concepts have been expressed in policy at various levels. The book concludes with an agenda for progressing participation and social inclusion, both for and with children and young people. Children, young people and social inclusion will be of interest to academics, students and policy makers, as well as to a wide range of practitioners including teachers, youth workers, participation workers and those working in interagency settings
