    Abstract: In recent decades, architecture has been seen as a field of practice that contributes greatly to the performativity of public space. In spite of the explosion of virtual communities through social media and the limitations imposed by pandemics, architecture today still holds an active role in (literally) building our societies. Bearing in mind its acute politicisation in past years, Living Politics in the City looks at public space from the perspective of architecture and its effective contribution, not as a prop but as an actual catalyst for embodying politics. The essays gathered here span five continents, activating various disciplinary approaches to architecture and examining it in different contexts: from a Palestinian refugee camp to the most vibrant urban axis in Sao Paolo, from the numerous city squares around the world crowded with rebellious populations, to the proximal politics of housing in Australia.

    Abstract: "Ableism remains the most socially acceptable form of intolerance, with pejoratives referencing disability - and intellectual disability in particular - remaining largely unquestioned among many. Yet the understanding, depiction, and representation of disability is also clearly in a process of transformation. This volume analyzes that transformation, taking a close look at attitudes toward disability, understood as a "deviation" from what a non-disabled body should ostensibly be able to do and how it should look, in historical and contemporary German-speaking contexts. The volume begins with an overview of the emergence and growth of disability studies in German-speaking Europe against the background of the field's emergence a decade or so earlier in the US and UK. The differences in timing, methodology, and research concentrations bring into focus how each cultural context has shaped the field. Building on recent scholarship that uses a cultural studies approach, the volume's three sections analyze disability and ability constructs in history, memory, and culture. The essays in the history section examine the emotions, morality, and power as they are negotiated on the individual level. Those in the memory section grapple with the origins of the Nazi persecution of people with disabilities, the fight for recognition of this genocide, and the politics of its commemoration. Finally, the culture section offers close readings of disability in literary and filmic texts from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries"--

    Abstract: Dejan Petkov explores the tramway renaissance in Western Europe from a socio-technical standpoint and focuses on the development in Germany, France, and England. A multiple case analysis reveals the drivers, impact forces, actors and interest constellations behind the tramway renaissance in these countries and demonstrates the large variations in local systems and their style. A key finding is that there can be quite different paths to the success of tramway systems, but this success usually comes at a cost and can have a comprehensive character only if the systems are considered an integral part of the overarching strategies and concepts for urban and regional development.     Abstract: In a book that confronts our society's obsession with violence, Maria Tatar seeks the meaning behind one of the most disturbing images of twentieth-century Western culture: the violated female corpse. This image is so prevalent in painting, literature, film, and, most recently, in mass media, that we rarely question what is at stake in its representation. Tatar, however, challenges us to consider what is taking place - both artistically and socially - in the construction and circulation of scenes depicting sexual murder. In examining images of sexual murder (Lustmord), she produces a riveting study of how art and murder have intersected in the sexual politics of culture from Weimar Germany to the present.

    Abstract: Globalization has not only changed our society, it has also had a profound effect on education. Many schools deal with student populations that due to migration have become increasingly multilingual. Politically, few would argue against the importance of multilingualism; rather, it is promoted to the fullest. However, in practical terms the challenges associated with teaching and educational policies have increased manifold as a result of the linguistic diversity among student bodies. Reading is certainly regarded as a key learning skill, however, the question arises as to how the students' life-world multilingualism is taken into consideration. Furthermore, being considered part of teachers' professional competence, teachers' mental processes and perceptions (beliefs) have been the focus in several different academic fields. Previous research suggests that there are significant links between teachers' beliefs and practices. This thesis explores the aforementioned aspects in greater detail, with the overall aim to gain a deeper understanding of teachers' beliefs and strategies when teaching reading in multilingual settings. Using a cross-disciplinary, qualitative research approach, the empirical inquiry is based on case studies within different, linguistically diverse settings. The case studies include classroom observations as well as teacher interviews in German, Swedish and Chilean grade 4 classrooms

    Abstract: Given the vast inventory of verbal and visual images of nonhuman animals disseminated for millennia to debase and bestialize Jews (the Bestiarium Judaicum), this work asks: What is at play when Jewish-identified writers employ such figures in their narratives and poems? Bringing together Jewish cultural studies, examining how Jews have negotiated Jew-Gentile difference, and critical animal studies, analyzing the functions served by asserting human-animal difference, this monograph focuses on the writings of primarily Germanophone authors, including Sigmund Freud, Heinrich Heine, Franz Kafka, Gertrud Kolmar, H. Leivick, Felix Salten, and Curt Siodmak. It ferrets out of their nonhuman-animal constructions their responses to the bestial answers upon which the Jewish and animal questions converged and by which varieties of the species 'Jew' were depicted.

    Abstract: From the current vantage point of the transformation of books and libraries, B. Venkat Mani presents a historical account of world literature. By locating translation, publication, and circulation along routes of “bibliomigrancy,” Mani narrates how world literature is coded and recoded as literary works find new homes on faraway bookshelves. Mani argues that the proliferation of world literature in a society is the function of a nation’s relationship with print culture. Moving from early Orientalist collections, to the Nazi magazine Weltliteratur, to the European Digital Library, Mani reveals the political foundations for a history of world literature that is at once a philosophical ideal, a process of exchange, a mode of reading, and a system of classification

Welche Bauprojekte können als Prototypen für bezahlbaren Wohnraum dienen? Anhand von etwa 55 Bauprojekten wird ein Blick in die Zukunft der deutschen Städte gewagt. Fotografien von Anja Weber und ausführliche Projektdarstellungen, die nach Besuchen vor Ort entstanden sind, gewähren Einblicke in den Alltag deutscher Flüchtlingsunterkünfte

    Abstract: "Multilingualism, nationhood, and cultural identity : northern Europe 16th-19th centuries offers systemic and analytical studies of the little-known multilingual practices of northern Europe before the creation of the nation states. In the 17th century, the Dutch Republic was home to a society where the practice of multilingualism was embedded in its social dynamics, in the use of dialects and foreign languages with their social functions and group identities. These same realities can be found today in other northern European countries. The notion of a national language did not crystallize before the early modern period and the creation of nation states. However, the ideal of a universal language has been present throughout history. This methodological discussion of the systems of European countries where multiple languages coexisted between the 16th and the 19th centuries provides valuable lessons for the understanding of today societies"--Back cover

    Abstract: This book is focussing on the results of the mobil.LAB Doctoral Research Group “Sustainable mobility in the metropolitan region of Munich” for its first phase. It highlights the key findings of young scientists from diverse disciplines on selected issues of sustainable mobility, such as neighbourhood mobility, sustainable modes, regional governance and spatial aspects. This includes insights of methods used to assess sustainable mobility, the way how to study and how to conceptualize sustainable development in each of the contributions.     Abstract: Why did Greek tragedy and "the tragic" come to be seen as essential to conceptions of modernity? And how has this belief affected modern understandings of Greek drama? In Genealogy of the Tragic, Joshua Billings answers these and related questions by tracing the emergence of the modern theory of the tragic, which was first developed around 1800 by thinkers associated with German Idealism. The book argues that the idea of the tragic arose in response to a new consciousness of history in the late eighteenth century, which spurred theorists to see Greek tragedy as both a unique, historically remote form and a timeless literary genre full of meaning for the present. The book offers a new interpretation of the theories of Schiller, Schelling, Hegel, Hölderlin, and others, as mediations between these historicizing and universalizing impulses, and shows the roots of their approaches in earlier discussions of Greek tragedy in Germany, France, and England. By examining eighteenth-century readings of tragedy and the interactions between idealist thinkers in detail, Genealogy of the Tragic offers the most comprehensive historical account of the tragic to date, as well as the fullest explanation of why and how the idea was used to make sense of modernity. The book argues that idealist theories remain fundamental to contemporary interpretations of Greek tragedy, and calls for a renewed engagement with philosophical questions in criticism of tragedy.

    Abstract: Auf den Schlachtfeldern der Weltgeschichte hat die Musik viele Funktionen. Propaganda missbraucht sie, um gegen den Feind zu hetzen. Kampflieder sollen die Angst vertreiben und den Gegner schmähen. Soldaten singen und musizieren, um im Wahnsinn des Krieges Trost zu finden und Mensch zu bleiben. Als erster moderner Krieg ist der Erste Weltkrieg auch für die Funktionalisierung der Musik richtungsweisend. Während alte Traditionen wie das Soldatenlied noch wichtig sind, werden für die Propaganda neue Medien erprobt, z.B. die Schallplatte. Schlager aus Operetten und Revuen beginnen jene Funktionen zu übernehmen, die vorher Volkslieder hatten. Diese vielfältigen Rollen der Musik im Ersten Weltkrieg untersuchen die Beiträge dieses Bandes. Dabei beleuchten die Autoren das Thema aus unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln: Wie wurde in der Propaganda mit Musik gekämpft? Wie nutzten Soldaten im Feld die Musik, um zu überleben? Und schließlich: Wie wurde der Krieg in der Musik verarbeitet?

    Description / Table of Contents: Language of Migration: Self- and Other-Representation of Korean Migrants in Germany analyzes a variety of genres that depict Korean migration in Germany - namely, newspaper articles, autobiographical narratives, and documentaries - and deconstructs the language of these texts to provide a more layered picture of the discursively constructed identities of this particular group. By applying methods of media analysis, Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), and postcolonial theory to the present intertextual and interdiscursive data, colonial discursive practices in Other-representations of Koreans in the German media and postcolonial forms of resistance in Self-representations of Koreans in autobiographical narratives in the German language are identified. In the past, research on migration and research on migrant literature were separate entities with little opportunity to cross. In this book, these two are brought together in order to examine both sides of the discursive coin

    Abstract: "Rising from humble origins to a position of preeminence, galvanized by the possibilities for financial gains made possible by the 'age of capital,' multitudes of social climbers appeared, 'on the make,' bent on conquering society's upper reaches by whatever means available. Yet making it is not the same as fitting in: an emblematic figure of the 'bourgeois century', the parvenu represents the Other on which a society depends. This drama of exclusion is symptomatic of nineteenth-century society as a whole -- ambivalent about social mobility and the meaning of social advancement, oscillating between a new sense of opportunity for all and a backward-looking retrenchment to rigid social structures. The parvenu allows us to decipher a culture and its prejudices, its fears and its difficulty in negotiating the advent of modernity"--

    Abstract: Norris provides an important contribution to the examination of identity in this book on the theoretical and methodological approach called multimodal interaction analysis. The book moves beyond the traditional discourse analysis focus on spoken language to examine the interplay of broader communicative modes that work together with language use.
