    Abstract: This comparative and multi-level study of state responses is confronted with huge complexity. Almost all existing theoretical and methodological approaches -such as secularism (including multiple secularisms or post-secularism)- do not take these complexities seriously into account, focusing on one concept only (wrong Leitdifferenz). They neglect different meanings of terms for agents in the field and they neglect the importance of different levels of governance, times, issues and minorities. This study, however, highlights minimally necessary complexity without drowning in this complexity. It draws clear conceptual, theoretical and methodological lessons, also in a broader sense for the study of governance of religious and cultural diversity and for the governance of migrations. Van den Breemer’s fascinating study of the religious governance of cemeteries by secular state institutions proves that cemeteries have become a privileged site to observe empirically the various ways in which the dual accommodation of religious-secular and multi-religious diversity takes place in today’s post-secular Western European societies.     Abstract: Is there a moral economy of capitalism? The term "moral economy" was coined in pre-capitalist times and does not refer to economy as we know it today. It was only in the nineteenth century that economy came to mean the production and circulation of goods and services. At the same time, the term started to be used in an explicitly critical tone: references to moral economy were normally critical of modern forms of economy, which were purportedly lacking in morals. In our times, too, the morality of capitalism is often the topic of debate and controversy. "Moral Economies" engages in these debates. Using historical case studies from the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries the book discusses the degree to which economic actions and decisions were permeated with moral, good-vs-bad classifications. Moreover it shows how strongly antiquity's concept of "embedded" economy is still powerful in modernity. The model for this was often the private household, in which moral, social, and economic behavior patterns were intertwined. The do-it-yourself movement of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries was still oriented towards this model, thereby criticizing capitalism on moral grounds.

Die Historikerin lehrte von 2003 bis 2007 an der Universität Yale. Zuvor hatte sie Lehrstühle für Neuere Geschichte an den Universitäten Bielefeld und Konstanz inne sowie an der Freien Universität Berlin, der sie seit 2008 als Honorarprofessorin erneut angehört. Neben ihrer Tätigkeit in zahlreichen wissenschaftlichen Beiräten und Kuratorien ist Ute Frevert Mitglied der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, der Deutschen Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina sowie der British Academy. Die DFG zeichnete sie 1998 mit dem renommierten Leibniz-Preis aus.

    Abstract: Is there a moral economy of capitalism? The term "moral economy" was coined in pre-capitalist times and does not refer to economy as we know it today. It was only in the nineteenth century that economy came to mean the production and circulation of goods and services. At the same time, the term started to be used in an explicitly critical tone: references to moral economy were normally critical of modern forms of economy, which were purportedly lacking in morals. In our times, too, the morality of capitalism is often the topic of debate and controversy. "Moral Economies" engages in these debates. Using historical case studies from the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries the book discusses the degree to which economic actions and decisions were permeated with moral, good-vs-bad classifications. Moreover it shows how strongly antiquity's concept of "embedded" economy is still powerful in modernity. The model for this was often the private household, in which moral, social, and economic behavior patterns were intertwined. The do-it-yourself movement of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries was still oriented towards this model, thereby criticizing capitalism on moral grounds

Unter schwierigen Bedingungen versuchten die Neuankömmlinge in den folgenden Jahren ihr materielles Auskommen sowie ein kulturelles Gemeindeleben zu organisieren. Die im vorliegenden Band edierten 184 Quellen dokumentieren nicht nur diese Bemühungen, sondern auch die Unterstützung vonseiten lokaler jüdischer Hilfskomitees sowie anderer, zumeist jüdischer internationaler Hilfsorganisationen. Zudem werden die Reaktionen von Nazi-Behörden in Deutschland und ihren Shanghaier Vertretungen sowie von japanischer und chinesischer Seite auf die Ereignisse beleuchtet. Die Dokumente auf Deutsch, Englisch, Jiddisch, Hebräisch, Russisch und Chinesisch sind annotiert, teilweise übersetzt und von Einleitungen, Karten und Fotografien begleitet.Around 20,000 Jews, mostly from Germany and Austria, escaped Nazi persecution at the end of the 1930s and fled to Shanghai. In the face of generally difficult conditions and increasing harassment from the Japanese occupation authorities, they sought to both secure their material livelihood and organize their social and cultural life. The 184 sources in German, English, Russian, Hebrew, Yiddish and Chinese of this volume document these efforts, as well as the support work by local relief committees and other, mostly Jewish, international aid organizations. In addition, some describe the reactions of the Nazi authorities to their Shanghai escape, while others reflect Chinese attitudes to the events.; Around 20.000 Jews, mostly from Germany and Austria, managed to escape Nazi persecution in the late 1930s and fled to Shanghai, where they found a safe refuge despite the increasing harassment of the Japanese authorities. In the face of difficult conditions, the Jewish refugees tried to arrange for both their material needs and the continuation of their communal cultural life.
