Abstract: Verlagsinfo: Since the Second World War more than 1,000 black independent congregations in around 300 different organizations have sprung up all over Britain. The immigration of Afro-Caribbeans and West Africans has led to the emergence and growth of many churches, which flourish in the cities and attract a growing number of members. They now play an increasingly active role in the social and ecumenical life of the nation, which is reflected in cooperation with the "New Instrument" of the British churches. They comprise a rich diversity of theological traditions and cultural inheritance, some in an interesting blend, some in a struggle with white elements. Existence and growth of these communities have often been explained by factors inherent in British society, such as social deprivation and English racism. The book attempts to prove that, as much these factors are a reality, they do not account for the dynamics of the movement, its proliferation and stability. Rather these congregations are carried by strong cultural and theological forces, which molded the spiritual experience of the African diaspora. They carry a living faith, sound contextual theologies, and a form of organization, which presents a model for other ethnic minorities. Author Biography: Roswith Gerloff is Founding Director of the Centre for Black and White Christian Partnership, Birmingham, UK, and former Senior Research Fellow at the University of Leeds, UK.

Abstract: The volume offers a lively and wide-ranging debate on the major questions of perceptual epistemology, including how perceptual experiences can bestow positive epistemic standing to empirical judgments and beliefs; the relative epistemic import of veridical and non-veridical perceptual experiences; the relation between experience and knowledge; and the nature of experience in view of its epistemic linkages to discursive contents. The volume is centered around five cutting-edge essays by leading authors in these areas—Anil Gupta, Andrea Kern, Christopher Peacocke, Susanna Schellenberg and Crispin Wright—along with no less than thirty contributions scrutinizing and critically discussing the essays, prompting detailed rejoinders from the lead authors. The volume closes with an extensive debate between Annalisa Coliva, Gupta and Wright. Taken as a whole, the volume covers much ground in epistemology of perception and displays a variety of approaches and perspectives through fruitful and accessible exchanges. It will be of interest not only to researchers working in perceptual epistemology but also to students new to the subject.

Abstract: 1. Introduction and Methodological Framework -- 2. Corporate Social Responsibility: Locating Contention and Scepticism -- 3. Socially Responsible Investment: New Challenges or Same Old Mindset? -- 4. The Fiduciary: The Overarching Contentious Concept.
Abstract: This book offers a unique exploration and analysis of social responsibility and associated ethical concepts used by business and financial organizations. Mussell lays out the argument that a realist analysis of social responsibility reveals caring relations underpinning this ethical behavior. The combination of a realist social ontology with contemporary relational care ethics provides the theoretical framework needed to successfully explore the ethics of social responsibility. She then applies this realist caring relations argument to three specific contexts in which social responsibility is explicitly evident - including corporate social responsibility, socially responsible investment, and the legal concept of the fiduciary. By tracing the historical development of each concept – including how economic methodology has influenced interpretations and practice – a complex picture emerges, showing how ethics, economic theory, and political theory intersect. This is an insightful work of philosophically informed contemporary political economy, analyzing the evolution and connection of key ethical concepts widely used by organizations. Helen Mussell is a Lecturer in Organizational Studies at Cardiff University, and a Research Associate at the Centre for Business Research, University of Cambridge, UK.

Abstract: In recent years, attacks on the rise of ‘gender ideology’ and ‘genderism’ as a political force, on gender studies as an academic field, and on feminist, queer and trans individuals seen to be their embodied representatives, have grown in scope and intensity. This edited volume understands such attacks as a global force in need of urgent analytical and political attention. Drawing on contributions from and about a varied range of geographical locations including Argentina, Chile, China, Germany, the Persian Gulf, Hungary, India, Pakistan, Peru, South Africa, Spain, Turkey, Uganda, the UK and the US, this book explores how anti-gender mobilisations work as a transnational formation shaped by the legacies of colonialism, racial capitalism, and resurgent nationalisms and how these can be resisted. By transnationalising our inquiries into the epistemic, affective and political nature of the anti-gender phenomenon, this volume troubles the ‘origin stories’ we tell about where anti-gender politics come from, and helps to better locate the various sources, actors, and networks behind these attacks, contesting the notion that anti-gender politics derive solely from right-wing nationalist or conservative religious actors, to show how they also derive from more centrist, liberal, leftist and even presumably feminist positions. The book thus invites us to sharpen and rethink the conceptual vocabularies and strategies we use to understand and resist anti-gender attacks, opening up space for envisioning new political imaginaries and transnational feminist solidarities. Abstract: This book reflects on the nature of the rule of law in the European Union and the present and future consequences of the attacks that are undermining it. Presenting various case studies, it analyses violations of the rule of law and their impact on the quality of European democracy and on the workings of civil and political society. Written from an interdisciplinary perspective, the book connects legal aspects related to infringements of the rule of law with their political and sociological consequences at both a general and the EU level. The book is divided into three parts. The first focuses on the rule of law in the European context and the threats to democracy posed by its violations. It examines how populist movements and parties utilize the erosion of the checks and balances in liberal democracies to weaken resisting intermediate bodies, such as dissenting civil society groups. The second part concentrates on the political perspectives, which it approaches both in terms of its general features and through a set of case studies related to violations of the rule of law. The third part provides a legal perspective on these issues and examines the impact of the rule of law and its infringement in several areas, impacting both the internal and external dimensions of the EU.

Abstract: “This is a compelling, passionately argued, and critically incisive study of the environments and dynamic ‘interspaces’ of contemporary British theatre and performance. Focusing on the work of key playwrights, Angelaki identifies the kinds of space that feature on stage - domestic, transient, liminal, ‘deviant’, and/or virtual - and, in so doing, explores theatrical responses to a range of urgent socio-political issues, including human trafficking, migration, the climate emergency, and ubiquitous digital culture. This is an ambitious and thought-provoking book; it is also a testament to the politics, possibilities, and profound significance of spatial world-building in contemporary theatre.” - Chris Megson, Reader in Drama and Theatre, Royal Holloway, University of London, UK This open access book considers how relationships to place and spatial ecologies more broadly are becoming redefined in light of intersecting climate, health, identity and care crises. Through an interdisciplinary, intersectional discourse it investigates how spaces of liminality frame contemporary human conditions in their interactional modes with both human and non-human ecologies. The interspace grounds the discussion, indicating states of flux and transience, where the in-between is the defining characteristic. This open access monograph, then, takes up the new complexity in one’s relationship(s) to their surrounding spaces through a rigorous discussion of texts and performance contexts in cutting-edge contemporary British theatre on a national and international scale. It seeks to address how in-betweenness spatially, temporally, environmentally, geographically and socially conceived has been emerging as the primary state for the unmoored individual of our time – and how it might serve as catalyst for performing one's agency in modes more empathetic not only to other humans, but, also, and equally, to the non-human world. Vicky Angelaki is Professor in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Mid Sweden University / Mittuniversitetet, Sundsvall, Sweden. She is the recipient of a sabbatical grant for the project “Performing Interspaces: Social Fluidities in Contemporary Theatre”, Riksbankens Jubileumsfond (2022). Abstract: Grounded in world-systemic analysis, this book revisits the literary and social implications of ‘tragedy’ in relation to global narratives about Africa and within fiction by writers from the continent. It argues that working through the full complexity of ‘tragedy’ helps to identify and challenge plots that depict Africa as reaching a tragic impasse. Instead, reconsidering tragedy allows for further, related interventions including the implications of narratives of development, the argument for formally engaging with literary texts that present challenging material, reformulations of African political and cultural agency, and the possibilities to be found in utopian thinking. It claims that contemporary fiction helps to scrutinise the familiar big picture of Africa and create space for discussions about wider political and historical commonalities between the continent and the rest of the world. As such, the novels discussed in this study are not simply ‘about’ Africa: these fictional narratives position Africa as a central actor within the global history of late capitalism. Abstract: “This insightful ethnography provides a captivating exploration of Burgaz Island where different classes and ethno-religious groups live together. Through the concept of "conviviality," Dr Duru reveals the dynamic social interactions that shape the island's way of life and the islanders’ collective identity. This book offers valuable insights for scholars, students, policymakers, and anyone interested in understanding the potential for shared lives across diverse communities.” -Elif S. Uyar, Department of Sociology, Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University, Turkey This open access book tells stories of conviviality, solidarity, and everyday management of conflicts and tensions, by building on original, long-term ethnographic research (fourteen months in 2009-2010, followed by fieldwork trips until now) on Burgaz, an island home to more than twenty ethnic and religious groups from different socio-economic backgrounds. The island provides an excellent case study of post-Ottoman conviviality, as the homogenisation process during the nation-building stage of modern Turkey triggered migrations from the island, especially of non-Muslims, yet the island’s population retains elements of its Byzantine and Ottoman diversity. The book explores the islanders’ representation of diversity through ethnographic research, media analysis and interviews, and shifts the analytical framework of Post-Ottoman plurality from “coexistence/toleration” to that of conviviality. The author critically engages with the literature on multiculturalism and cosmopolitanism and conceptualises conviviality as both living together in diversity as shared ways of living as well as living with difference. The book further explores the relationship between conviviality, solidarity, coexistence/toleration, intoleration and nationalism.

Abstract: This book provides a fully-fledged exploration of science and technology studies (STS) perspective applied to algorithms developed to support care processes. By concentrating on algorithmic technologies for supporting processes of social and health care, the book intersects topics connected to technoscientific innovation and specifically digital transformation for health care. By offering different attempts of deconstructing algorithmic technologies, the book provides a landmark reference for those interested in undertaking research focused on areas connected to algorithmic decision-making for health care. The book will be an invaluable reference for scholars interested in the STS debate and related fields (e.g.,human–computer interaction, computer supported cooperative work, participatory design, and sociology of health and medicine). This book responds to a growing interest in the application of algorithms’ to local and national care systems. The book balances theoretical and empirical analysis bringing together experienced and early-career scholars. This book will be of interest to researchers in STS as well as healthcare professionals and managers as some of the topics covered help to critically reconsider some facets of planning through algorithmic technologies supporting the practice of healthcare and decision-making. Abstract: This volume presents the various ways in which the study of gender makes a difference in archaeological research, the archaeological academic milieu and the wider public’s thinking about gender and considers avenues of future development. It addresses questions such as why gender matters for archaeology, while examining gender from various angles (including aspects such as subjectivity, embodiment, diet, multifaceted perspectives and intersectionality) and in various periods (prehistory, Ancient Egypt, Roman antiquity, the Middle Ages and the modern and contemporary periods). It also discusses the relationship between archaeology and other academic fields involving the study of gender, as well as representations and debates on gender in the media. The theme ‘gender and change in archeology’ emerged out of concerns voiced within the ‘Archaeology and Gender in Europe’ (AGE) working community of the European Association of Archaeologists (EAA) with respect to the future of gender archaeology. This book unites researchers of gender archaeology from two perspectives: that of gender archaeologists from academic milieus where the study of gender has long been established and who in the meantime came to feel that this avenue of inquiry had become predictable and lost its provocative power, and that of gender archaeologists from countries where this field was only recently introduced and who, while more enthusiastic about the utility of gender archaeology, are concerned with how to disseminate it among skeptical peers. Both groups of archaeologists mainly argue that, four decades on, the study of gender in archaeology is still able to generate considerable change in our understanding of past and present-day societies. The volume is primarily of interest to archaeologists and researchers of gender studies.

Abstract: This textbook offers a comprehensive introduction to Political Economy. It combines comparative, international and historical perspectives into a holistic framework of analysis. Drawing on the work of Karl Polanyi, the book shows how capitalist economies differ around the globe and how they are embedded in the international economic order. Through a critical-institutionalist lens, it helps to account for the evolution of contemporary capitalism and addresses current topics at the intersection of political science and economics. Abstract: This monograph lays the foundation for new methodologies of research between music and translation. It is the first such holistic attempt—from the perspective of a musicologist—based on the adaptation of translation theories. Until now, these fields have remained underexplored together. Only recently have the tools developed by translation theory permeated into musical scholarship. Such tools should prove as a promising alternative to those offered by classic musicological studies, particularly in reference to musical arrangement, pop music covers and performance. Theoretical discussion on topics are supported by case studies. This text appeals to musicologists and musicians as well as experts in the field of translation theory who are interested in expanding their field of inquiry.

Abstract: This open access book brings together different perspectives on migration and the city that are usually discussed separately, to show the special character of the urban context as a territorial and political space where people coexist, whether by choice or necessity. Drawing on heterogeneous situations in cities in different world regions (including Europe, North America, the Middle East, South, Southeast and East Asia and the Asia Pacific) contributions to this volume examine how migration and the urban context interact in the twenty-first century. The book is structured in four parts. The first looks at cities as hubs of cultural creativity, exploring the many dimensions of cultural diversity and identity as they are negotiated in the urban context. The second focuses on what lies outside the large urban centres of today, notably suburbs, while the third part engages with migration and diversity in small and mid-sized cities, many of which have adopted strategies to welcome growing numbers of migrants. Last but not least, the fourth part looks at the challenges and opportunities that asylum-seeking and irregular migration flows bring to cities. By providing a variety of empirical cases based on various world regions, this book is a valuable resource for researchers, students and policy makers.

Abstract: This book assesses the quality of self-government in four northern European regions with strong autonomy rights. Examining the experiences of Scotland, the Faroe Islands, Greenland and the Åland Islands, it considers how these regions have developed their own political and administrative systems within the larger states they form part of. The book looks to understand the key democratic and administrative qualities of a functioning self-government, and how geographic size and economic and human resources can impact the ways in which partially independent territories govern. It also assesses the emotional dimensions of regional nationalism, and how this impacts the concept and public perception of partially independent nation territories. By focusing on the quality of self-government within these nation territories, the book considers whether strong autonomy contributes to peaceful co-existence within established national borders, or provides new munition for secessionist movements. It will appeal to students and scholars of sub-national governance, European politics, territorial politics and conflict management. Abstract: This book is both a conceptualization and detailed analysis of the current crisis in which modern utopian categories of political institutions find themselves, as well as a reflection and clarification of the new dangers and opportunities facing post-utopian politics in-the-making. Met with those who believe that no more utopian political projects are possible, the post-utopian movement maintains a non-fantastic or illusory character of being able to apply new great discourses and radically democratic historical narratives, while respecting both the autonomy and emancipation of individuals as plurality and the socio-cultural differences of communities. With this purpose in mind, the book is divided into five thematically differentiated sections: the new utopian categories beyond modern epistemes; the possibility of liberal utopian democracies without neoliberalism; the opportunities of socialist empowerments and insurgencies; the necessity of thinking in the space between two ages; and the urgency to create eco-political post-utopias. Jorge León Casero is Professor at the University of Zaragoza, Spain. He has been the head researcher of the Social Risk Map project. He is the author of several books, book chapters and articles. Julia Urabayen is Professor at the University of Navarra, Spain. In recent years, she has mainly studied public-urban space, forms of political violence, citizenship and the city, as well as governance and feminist utopias. Abstract: This book presents a comprehensive examination of how leadership and collaboration are discursively performed in professional communication, using real-world data from a UK public sector IT team. Taking an auto-ethnographic approach to workplace talk, the author examines the language involved in the performance of different team-based professional roles, examining how professional identity and relationships are indexed through casual face-to-face talk in an office environment. This investigation of how a group of people come together in an effort to achieve shared workplace goals relates to key debates in the area of professional communication, putting forward new theoretical and methodological frameworks for understanding and analysing how person-orientated aspects of professional communication shape discourses of work. This book appeals to a wide and interdisciplinary audience, including advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students, academics and researchers specialising in applied linguistics broadly, and professional communication in particular, as well as consultants and practitioners working across a wide range of professional sectors. Małgorzata Chałupnik is a lecturer in the School of English at the University of Nottingham, UK. Her expertise is in professional communication, particularly as observed in business and health(care) settings. She has worked with many organisations from across the UK, embedding findings of professional communication research into professional practice.

Abstract: This edited collection offers an in-depth exploration of the role of landscape and place as literary ‘settings’. It examines the multifaceted relationships between authors, narrators, and characters to their locales, as well as broader considerations of the significance of the representation of landscape in a world deeply affected by human interventions. Consisting of case studies of projects that engage with these questions, as well as research examining the theoretical underpinnings of both creative practices/processes and post-textual analysis of published works, this volume is both multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary in scope. In the context of the climate crisis and a pandemic which has caused us to re-evaluate the significance of landscape and the environment, it responds to the need to engage current trends within the academy and in broader social debate about our relationship to the natural world. Philippa Holloway is a novelist and Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing at Staffordshire University, UK. As a writer and academic her work is published in internationally, and she has curated international writing projects and collaborated on interdisciplinary projects related to energy production and nuclearity. Craig Jordan-Baker is Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing at the University of Brighton, UK. He is principally a writer of fiction and non-fiction writer and has published peer-reviewed research in a range of creative writing journals. He is also a dramatist, short story writer, arts journalist, walker and forager.

Abstract: This open access book creates conceptual links between political emotions, citizenship, home and belonging. The book describes that, in the case of decided return and reintegration to a post-conflict society and a fragmented state, like Bosnia and Herzegovina, the returnees do not conceptualize the emotional dimension of their BiH citizenship as home and belonging as this citizenship does not make them feel safe and secure. Instead, “feeling at home” is found in family, place and time, while belonging is categorized as ethnic, religious, relational, landscape, linguistic, and economic. The emotional dimension of the home state citizenship is constituted through a wide spectrum of emotions, ranging from anger, frustration, fear, guilt, shame, disappointment, nostalgia, powerlessness, to patriotic love, pride, defiance, joy, happiness and hope. This book provides a valuable resource to students and scholars of migration and diaspora studies, as well as political scientists, human geographers and anthropologists.

Abstract: This book offers an enhanced and comprehensive understanding of control theory and its practical applications. The theoretical chapters on control tools have been meticulously revised and improved to provide a clearer and more insightful exploration of the fundamental concepts and ideas. The explanations have been refined, and new examples have been added to aid comprehension. Additionally, a new chapter on discrete-time systems has been included, delving into an important aspect of control theory. Advanced topics in control are also covered in greater detail, ensuring a comprehensive treatment of the subject matter. The section on experimental applications has been revamped to showcase the application of control ideas in various scenarios. Several chapters have been replaced with fresh content that focuses on controlling new and different experimental prototypes. These examples illustrate how control concepts can be effectively applied in real-world situations. Furthermore, this book introduces a new approach for control of non-minimum phase systems and explores the concept of differential flatness for multiple-input multiple-output systems. Additionally, a fascinating application involving a wheeled pendulum mobile robot has been included. While some chapters have been replaced, the second edition retains the chapters on the control of DC motors and the control of a magnetic levitation system. However, the material in the former chapter is mostly new, and the latter chapter is entirely supported by new control concepts and ideas.

Abstract: This book explores the global technological transformations that have shaped development of society for eons, from the emergence of Homo sapiens to the modern day. Looking at a potential future for all of this century and the beginning of the next, the book explores how society is changing as a result of the two most powerful trends: technological advances and global aging. It studies the forthcoming technological wave – the Cybernetic Revolution, which will encompass AI, medical technology and biotechnology, robotics, cognitive, nanotechnology etc. In turn, it shows why and how global aging will become one of the most powerful factors, influencing the evolution of society and the World System as a whole. Lastly, the book demonstrates how technological innovations can change the way people live and the society of the future, assessing both the new opportunities and threats posed by uncontrolled technological progress. Accordingly, it will appeal to social scientists, politicalscientists, economists and historians who are interested in technological transformations and their social and economic impacts.

Abstract: This book provides a comprehensive analysis of municipal amalgamation reforms in Europe. Adopting the analytical and methodological tools of comparative historical analysis, it examines how the history of local government systems has conditioned the adoption of municipal amalgamation reforms across time and space. Beginning with Sweden’s early amalgamation reforms during the late 1940s and early 1950s, it assesses how the evolution of the Welfare State, decentralization, urbanization, and economic growth have all impacted amalgamation reforms in ten other European countries. The book challenges the prevailing theory that amalgamations are implemented by rational design to improve the efficiency and capacity of local governments. Instead, it argues that state sovereignty, regime changes, centralization of authority and diffusion effects are more likely causes of the adoption of municipal amalgamation reforms. It will appeal to all those interested in public administration, public policy, European politics, and local governance studies. António F. Tavares is Associate Professor at the School of Economics and Management, University of Minho, Portugal. Abstract: This edited book focuses on the intersection of return migration and crises in non-Western countries. The book explores a wide range of theoretical and methodological perspectives while offering practical insights to address the intricate issues surrounding return migration and crises. The topics covered within this volume include return migration trends, the pivotal roles and contributions of return migrants, the social, psychological, and policy challenges faced by returnees, emerging issues stemming from return migration in their home countries, and the public and formal responses to return migration and the reintegration of returnees, and the roles of crises in these areas. This edited volume brings together diverse perspectives of academic researchers, practitioners, and policymakers on return migration. The book features cases of multiple non-Western countries in Asia (Philippines, China, India), Europe (Lithuania, Turkey, & Ukraine), the Middle East and North Africa (Morocco), and South America and the Caribbean (Mexico, Peru & Dominican Republic). Findings provide a unique opportunity to critically explore current thinking on return migration and investigate the relationship between migration and crisis from varying policy and operational viewpoints. This book, hence, attends to practitioners to develop creative solutions to both global and local policies and practices of return migration management in emerging market countries, which will support and accommodate both their returnees and residents amid challenging times. Jungwon Yeo is an Associate Professor in the School of Public Administration at the University of Central Florida. Her primary research focuses on enhancing attitudes, behaviors, and cognitions of diverse individuals and organizations and their collective decision-making process in critical policy contexts, such as disaster and crisis management, migration, and human security. Additionally, her research explores key topics shaping contemporary discourse in public administration, including accountability, ethics, leadership, and social justice, and their consequential impact on public service provision. Her research experience is demonstrated through refereed publications, national and international conference presentations, and multi-year interdisciplinary research grant awards.

Abstract: This edited collection offers a reappraisal of character as a precondition for caricature and addresses how the two began to merge, becoming increasingly interlinked over the course of the long eighteenth century. It emphasises the need to understand character more fully, arguing that the nuances and origins of caricature can only be appreciated in light of the genre’s prehistory and reliance on popular character types. Interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary in approach, the collection makes use of a variety of theories and addresses fiction in its broadest sense, expanding and reconceptualising critical, historical and theoretical discussion of character. Chapters draw from disability studies, cultural materialism, gender studies and the history of sexuality, spatial theory and performance studies. Jennifer Buckley is a Postdoctoral Researcher in the School of English, Media, and Creative Arts at the University of Galway. Her research focuses on genre studies, book history, and sociability in the long eighteenth century, and she is completing a monograph titled Periodicalism, Fiction, and the Novel, 1700–1760: Ecologies of Print. Montana Davies-Shuck is an Independent Scholar. She was awarded her PhD in English and Creative writing from Northumbria University. Montana’s work focuses on the fop in the long eighteenth century, examining the political, social, and cultural valence of the figure. .

Abstract: This contributed volume offers a comprehensive and multifaceted understanding of the current forensic innovation, landscape, enablers, road blockers, and barriers to implementation. It also presents all aspects that need consideration to cross the valley of death between an idea and its successful implementation. It uniquely merges the technical and scientific aspects of some of the innovations that have been implemented across forensic science within the National and International landscape and with i) the necessary considerations to take into account on the road to success, such as business planning, data privacy, and legal and regulatory aspects, ii) the end-users perspective and iii) the industry perspective. Case studies illustrate "what success looks like" by discussing forensic innovations that have made it to the market and have subsequently impacted positively on criminal investigations. This book acts as a platform to facilitate the dialogue between key stakeholders in driving innovation namely academia, industry, and end-users as well as indicating a roadmap to facilitate practical developments, whilst serving as a revolutionary springboard to initiate an innovation-transforming paradigm shift. This volume is a valuable contribution to the field and is of great interest to graduates and researchers engaged in forensic science, forensic service providers and manufacturers as well as policymakers. .

Abstract: This open access volume explores the impact of globalization on the contemporary study of deep-time art. The volume explores how early rock art research’s Eurocentric biases have shifted with broadened global horizons to facilitate new conversations and discourses in new post-colonial realities. The book uses seven main themes to explore theoretical, methodological, ethical, and practical developments that are orienting the study of Pleistocene and Holocene arts in the age of globalization. Compiling studies as diverse as genetics, visualization, with the proliferation of increasingly sophisticated archaeological techniques, means that vast quantities of materials and techniques are now incorporated into the analysis of the world’s visual cultures. Deep-Time Images in the Age of Globalization aims to promote critical reflection on the multitude of positive – and negative – impacts that globalization has wrought in rock art research. The volume brings new theoretical frameworks as well as engagement with indigenous knowledge and perspectives from art history. It highlights technical, methodological and interpretive developments, and showcases rock art characteristics from previously unknown (in the global north) geographic areas. This book provides comparative approaches on rock art globally and scrutinises the impacts of globalization on research, preservation, and management of deep-time art. This book will appeal to archaeologists, social scientists and art historians working in the field as well as lovers of rock art. .

Abstract: This book offers a new critique of selfhood in Romantic literature. In the past, Romanticism has been seen as an individualistic movement, with writers believing in the ‘centrality’ of the self. Challenging this prevailing view of Romanticism and the modern self, this study unveils an alternative tradition of Romantic writing in which the self is fragile, degenerate, non-existent – or in a word, contingent. It combines philosophy, intellectual history, literary studies and digital humanities and takes a transnational approach both in its coverage of philosophical thought and literature, including case studies from England, Ireland, Scotland and colonial Australia, with examples from American and European works as well. The book also uses innovative digital techniques such as text analysis, sentiment mining and network analysis to enrich the exploration of text and context. It covers all major genres of Romantic writing: fiction (realist novels), poetry (the sonnet), non-fiction prose (biography) and drama (gothic tragedy). Providing a new framework for understanding the contingent self, this book is of interest to scholars and students of Romantic literature, philosophy of the self and digital humanities. Michael Falk is Senior Lecturer in Digital Studies in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Melbourne, Australia. He is a literary scholar and programmer, whose work considers how computing can expand the study of literature, and how literature can expand the study of computing. His work appears in the Oxford Encyclopedia of Literary Theory, Interdisciplinary Science Reviews, Frontiers in AI and Robotics, the John Clare Society Journal, and elsewhere. Romanticism and the Contingent Self is his first book.

Abstract: Queering W. B. Yeats and Gabriele D’Annunzio is an important new study that is revelatory not only for what it reveals about these two important playwrights, but also for its innovative approach to methodology. As modernist playwrights, Yeats and D’Annunzio adopted a variety of approaches – both overlapping and contrasting – to their dramaturgy and stagecraft, and this book sheds new light on the political and aesthetic consequences of their work. Of even greater value, however, is Balázs’s extraordinarily deft and original application of queer theory to these writers’ dramas and legacies. The overall impact is to open up new approaches to research in modernism, theatre studies, queer theory – and beyond. -Prof. Patrick Lonergan, University of Galway, Ireland Queering W. B. Yeats and Gabriele D’Annunzio offers a fresh, creative, and highly illuminating approach to the work of two essential yet perplexing modern European playwrights. Reading Yeats through the lens of queer theory unlocks some of the contradictions of his treatment of gender and sexuality, demonstrating that they remain profoundly anti-normative and anti-authoritarian even when citing heteronormative or misogynistic tropes. In addition to provocative and generative readings of some of Yeats's and D’Annunzio’s most difficult plays, Balázs’s book offers a treasure trove of information about modernist theatrical production and the performers who brought these dramas to life. The questions raised in this book about the arts and authority could not possibly be more timely. This book will be essential reading for anyone drawn to the fascinating world of modern European drama. -Prof. Susan Cannon Harris, University of Notre Dame This monograph provides the first fully theorised queer and comparative reading of Yeats’s and D’Annunzio’s drama in light of the playwrights’ rich queer and feminist networks. It uncovers a subversive and often coded social commentary in eight key dramatic texts by each playwright through meticulous and highly topical dramaturgical readings which carry relevant implications for the contemporary moment. Zsuzsanna Balázs is Assistant Professor at Óbuda University in Budapest, Hungary.
