Abstract: European countries have faced profound changes in family structures and family forms over the last few decades. This volume provides insights from eleven European countries with varying welfare state arrangements, exploring the extent to which the intergenerational transmission of attitudes, resources and values matter with regard to the economic self-sufficiency of young people. Drawing on in-depth interviews with three generations of family members, the contributors show how intergenerational transmission happens and what the effects of these transmission processes are. The book reveals that family members serve as role models to younger family members and influence their career and educational aspirations, and that there are specific family value orientations and parental approaches which support economic self-sufficiency in younger generations. Intergenerational Transmission of Economic Self-Sufficiency will be of interest to students and scholars across a range of disciplines including social work, sociology, psychology and political sociology.

Abstract: Abstract: "Actual macro-theories of nationalism lack a systematic integration into a metatheory. The paper proposes to use systems theory as a conceptual tool for this requirement by examining two of its branches. First, an attempt is made to determine a systematic location of the notion of nation in Niklas Luhmann's framework. Luhmann himself did not, until now, include the problem of nationalism into his concept. The author, therefore, proposes to embed the notion of nation into Luhmann's concept either by arguing that it refers to the scope of a political system or by arguing that it refers to the self-description of a society. It follows that any theory of the nation should be regarded as a »theory of reflection« (Reflexionstheorie) of a politically defined society. But, as a concept of identification cannot be formulated without referring to the individual, a purely systemic approach only describes half of the phenomenon. Therefore, second, the author takes up Peter M. Hejl's approach

〈dt.〉
Abstract: This study investigates the influence of social structures and social networks on collective decision making of a fragmented, heterogeneous committee which is responsible for the extraction and distribution of a common-pool resource, water, in an agro-pastoral village community in Senegal. It shows how self-management of this common good succeeds despite of conflict and distrust between peasants and semi-nomads. The analysis combines, for the first time, the Institutional Analysis and Development Framework with social interaction models of Biased Net Theory and dynamics of committee decision making, thereupon extending the analytical approach. The study reveals that collective action in an institution depends upon the segmented structure of the social interactions, the integrative character of the institution, the representation of the various subgroups in the committee, and the existence of an influential core of decision makers who occupy also central positions in the villages. 〈engl.〉
