    Abstract: This volume presents current thoughts, research, and findings that were presented at a summit focusing on energy as a cross-cutting concept in education, involving scientists, science education researchers and science educators from across the world. The chapters cover four key questions: what should students know about energy, what can we learn from research on teaching and learning about energy, what are the challenges we are currently facing in teaching students this knowledge, and what needs be done to meet these challenges in the future? Energy is one of the most important ideas in all of science and it is useful for predicting and explaining phenomena within every scientific discipline. The challenge for teachers is to respond to recent policies requiring them to teach not only about energy as a disciplinary idea but also about energy as an analytical framework that cuts across disciplines.     Abstract: Wind power and solar photovoltaics (PV) are crucial to meeting future energy needs while decarbonising the power sector. Deployment of both technologies has expanded rapidly in recent years, one of the few bright spots in an otherwise bleak picture of clean energy progress. However, the inherent variability of wind power and solar PV raises unique and pressing questions. Can power systems remain reliable and cost-effective while supporting high shares of variable renewable energy (VRE)? And if so, how? Based on a thorough review of the integration challenge, this publication gauges the economic significance of VRE integration impacts, highlights the need for a system-wide approach to integrating high shares of VRE and recommends how to achieve a cost-effective transformation of the power system. This book summarises the results of the third phase of the Grid Integration of VRE (GIVAR) project, undertaken by the IEA over the past two years. It is rooted in a set of seven case studies, comprising 15 countries on four continents. It deepens the technical analysis of previous IEA work and lays out an analytical framework for understanding the economics of VRE integration impacts. Based on detailed modelling, the impact of high shares of VRE on total system costs is analysed. In addition, the four flexible resources which are available to facilitate VRE integration – generation, grid infrastructure, storage and demand side integration – are assessed in terms of their technical performance and cost-effectiveness.

Within the ERC funded ARCHGLASS project, the authors of this work developed new geochemical techniques to provenance primary glass making. They investigated both production and consumer sites of glass, and identified suitable mineral resources for glass making through geological prospecting. Because the source of the raw materials used in the manufacturing of natron glass can be determined, new insights in the trade of this material are revealed. While eastern Mediterranean glass factories were active throughout the Hellenistic to early Islamic period, western Mediterranean and possibly Italian and North African sources also supplied the Mediterranean world with raw glass in early Roman times. By combining archaeological and scientific data, the authors develop new interdisciplinary techniques for an innovative archaeological interpretation of glass trade in the Hellenistic-Roman world, highlighting the development of glass as an economic material

Doch hinter dem Versand eines Briefes steht ein enormer technischer und organisatorischer Apparat, insbesondere dann, wenn Staatsgrenzen überschritten werden. Internationaler Postverkehr setzt daher ein Mindestmaß an Integration von nationalen Netzen und Diensten voraus, wozu die Schaffung von ‚Standards’ eine Grundvoraussetzung ist. In diesem Band werden erstmals Standardisierungen des internationalen Bahn- und Luftpostverkehrs aus historischer Perspektive eingehend untersucht. Der Vergleich struktureller, prozessualer und inhaltlicher Aspekte zeigt neben signifikanten Unterschieden auch eine Reihe überraschender Parallelen zwischen infrastruktureller Integration Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts und jener nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg.

    Abstract: Markets of Sorrow, Labors of Faith is an ethnographic account of long-term recovery in post-Katrina New Orleans. It is also a sobering exploration of the privatization of vital social services under market-driven governance. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, public agencies subcontracted disaster relief to private companies that turned the humanitarian work of recovery into lucrative business. These enterprises profited from the very suffering that they failed to ameliorate, producing a second-order disaster that exacerbated inequalities based on race and class and leaving residents to rebuild almost entirely on their own. Filled with the often desperate voices of residents who returned to New Orleans, Markets of Sorrow, Labors of Faith describes the human toll of disaster capitalism and the affect economy it has produced. While for-profit companies delayed delivery of federal resources to returning residents, faith-based and nonprofit groups stepped in to rebuild, compelled by the moral pull of charity and the emotional rewards of volunteer labor. Adams traces the success of charity efforts, even while noting an irony of neoliberalism, which encourages the very same for-profit companies to exploit these charities as another market opportunity. In so doing, the companies profit not once but twice on disaster.

    Abstract: Eisenbahnen verkehren über politische Grenzen wie andere Verkehrsmittel auch. Das Buch untersucht anhand von drei Fallstudien, wie sich gemeinsame Vorstellungen für den Bahnverkehr entwickelten - oder auch nicht entwickelten. Themen sind Angebotskonzepte, Tarife und Infrastruktur als zentrale Gestaltungsbereiche des Bahnverkehrs mit Beispielen des späten 19. Jahrhunderts und der Zeit nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg An Grenzen treffen oft unterschiedliche politische wie planerische Ziele aufeinander. Gerade auf der Schiene ist jedoch besonders viel Abstimmung erforderlich, um auch für internationale Verkehre ein gutes Angebot machen zu können. Dabei geht es nicht nur um kompatible technische Standards, sondern es ist auch eine Abstimmung von Ideen und Konzepten erforderlich. Auch in der Gegenwart ist zu erleben, wie schwer sich Schritte (zurück) zu einem „europäischen“ Bahnsystem im Widerstreit mit technischer Komplexität, zunehmender Konkurrenz und unterschiedlichen Ideen umsetzen lassen.

    Abstract: Welche Bilder wurden und werden in Zoos und Vergnügungsparks wiedergegeben? Jan-Erik Steinkrügers Studie zeigt: Die Themenwelten, für die besonders Carl Hagenbeck und Walt Disney stilprägend waren, (re-)produzieren Bilder anderer Welten. Die Studie widmet sich dem Wandel der Darstellungspraxis als Beispiel thematisierter Räume. Neben der Darstellungsform geraten besonders auch die Darstellungsinhalte in den Blick der Analyse - eine Kombination, die neue Einblicke zulässt in das Phänomen der Thematisierung. Zugleich trägt das Buch zum Verständnis von Tourismus bei - denn Themenwelten sind die von allem Störenden befreite Version des touristischen Blicks.

    Abstract: "Preface The subject of electromagnetics is still a core subject of the undergraduate electrical engineering (EE) curriculum; however, at most of the universities in United States, the time allotted to teach it is cut into half (one 3-credit course instead of two). The present graduates with BS degree in EE being rushed through the same curriculum content in a shorter time often miss the concepts and depend on a lot of formulas which they use as a recipe for some calculations based on an example worked out in the book. Some of them are fortunate to take a follow-up special elective course in microwaves or RF design or antennas or fiber optics, and so on, thus partly reinforcing one application area. Readily available commercial software allows them to do routine calculations and design without having a conceptual understanding of the expected solution. The commercial software is so user-friendly that we usually get a beautiful colored visualization of the solution, even if it is a wrong simulation of the physical problem. After getting one or two mild reprimands from the boss in his new employment after graduation, the new graduate realizes that he needs to have a fairly good idea of what is the appropriate model to be simulated and what qualitative result is to be expected. Though the software is very useful, it is not a substitute for a conceptual understanding of the steps involved in solving the problem. Fortunately, for him, there is probably a university which offers graduate courses and there is an instructor/professor who understands that these bright students recruited by some of the top companies are not less smart than the employees recruited by the company, say a decade or two ago"--

    Abstract: This compilation of original essays by an international cast of economists, regulators and industry practitioners analyzes some of the major issues now facing postal and delivery services throughout the world as competition from information and communication technologies (ICT) has increased. Competition has become increasingly important in the postal sector for some time in the form of alternative entrants providing mail delivery. However, the competition from ICT in the form of email and instant messaging, the Internet, Facebook and other forms of social networking and portable wireless devices such as the iPad and Kindle may be even more significant. Mail volumes are falling and the economies of scale that have made possible daily deliveries to every address are being eroded. This book assesses volume these declines resulting from this so-called ‘eSubstituion’ and looks at the ways the postal sector can adapt to the rapid changes resulting from ICT. The impact of electronic invoicing on transactions mail, and the impact on bulk mail of electronic forms of advertising are examined. Strategies, including pricing and access policies, are discussed in the context of the increasing impact of ICT. A rethinking of the role of mail in an electronic age is taking place and this book provides the cutting-edge of this rethinking and the attempts of POs to reinvent themselves while continuing to meet the public’s expectation of continuing ubiquitous daily deliveries of traditional mail products.
