    Abstract: This brief maps the available data augmented by expert interviews on the impact of the Covid-19 measures on DV in eight European Member States during the first lock-down. The volume addresses an on-going situation, additionally complicated by renewed lockdown restrictions during autumn and early winter 2020. It assesses the assumptions of an imminent wave of domestic violence against reliable data from crime statistics, surveys, and various institutions responding to domestic violence. Collecting partner country reports from Austria, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Portugal, Scotland and Slovenia, it demonstrates the effects that lockdown measures starting March 2020 had on reported DV incidents. It considers the differences between each country with respect to policing, legal systems, social and cultural factors and highlights best practices to prevent conditions resulting from Covid-19 lockdown undermining victims’ security and frontline responders’ capacities to provide services and prevent domestic violence.

    Abstract: "As eighteenth-century historians have made the 'global turn,' portions of Atlantic history have received more attention than others. Studies of trade, empire, and state-building have proliferated, but the interconnected histories of resistance against that world's greatest concentrations of power remain disproportionally overlooked. This book aims to be the first to demonstrate the rich web of interrelations between the increasingly inclusive and cosmopolitan social movements of the Age of Revolution. Liberty and rights, concepts previously restricted to certain nations and privileged groups, became potentially applicable to anyone, anywhere. Only low barriers existed between movements and countries: indeed, many activists desired the reduction of borders, boundaries, and old hatreds to right past abuses. Exuberant hopes spread that the political, economic, class, religious, racial, national, and other Old Regime barriers could be abolished - perhaps quickly"--

    Abstract: This book is organized around the personal struggles of ten extraordinary French women activists: Eugenie Niboyet, Eugenie Foa, Suzanne Voilquin, Josephine Bachellery, Pauline Roland, Jeanne Deroin, Elisa Lemonnier, Desiree Gay, Adele Esquiros, and Marie Noemie Constant. Ranging in age from 52 to 20 in 1848, coming from different economic backgrounds, these women share a common quest to be included in the economic and political rights won by the revolt against the July Monarchy.Banding together in the face of exclusion from the right to work guaranteed to all men in February 1848, they write petitions to the Provisional Government, and create the first daily feminist newspaper, "La Voix des femmes." The newspaper is a forum for their demands: midwives who demand to be paid as civil servants, domestic workers who demand support while unemployed, teachers who demand opportunities for higher education and for higher wages. The right to vote and the right to divorce are debated in the newspaper.Seeking to widen their support, Niboyet and her cohort launch a political club, Le Club de femmes, which is ridiculed in the satiric press. The women activists of 1848 do not withdraw from the public sphere. They form workers' associations. Deroin and Roland are imprisoned for their activism. All continue to work for women's rights as teachers, writers, and artists.The women of 1848 inspire successive generations of women to continue their struggle

    Abstract: Appelée de ses vœux par Lucien Febvre en 1941, l’histoire des sensibilités ou l’histoire des émotions a connu ces dernières années un écho remarquable chez les historien.ne.s, mais pas uniquement. Les émotions sont également devenues un objet d’étude à part entière dans d’autres domaines des sciences humaines et sociales, notamment en sociologie, en ethnographie, ou bien encore en sciences politiques et en philosophie. Cet ouvrage interdisciplinaire fait le choix d’appréhender les émotions sous le prisme de la politique et des médias en mettant en lumière leurs interdépendances aussi bien en France qu’en Allemagne aux XXe et XXIe siècles. L’objectif est de traiter de la question des transferts d’émotions entre les deux pays ainsi que de leur signification dans la construction d’une histoire européenne des émotions.
    Abstract: Die von Lucien Febvre 1941 geforderte Geschichte der Befindlichkeiten oder der Emotionen hat in den letzten Jahren ein bemerkenswertes Echo unter den HistorikerInnen gefunden. Aber auch in anderen Bereichen der Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften wie der Soziologie, der Ethnographie, der Politikwissenschaft und der Philosophie haben sich Emotionen zu einem eigenständigen Untersuchungsgegenstand entwickelt. In diesem interdisziplinär konzipierten Buch werden Emotionen durch das Prisma der Politik und der Medien betrachtet, wobei insbesondere deren deutsch- französischen Verflechtungen im 20. und 21. Jahrhundert ausgelotet werden. Ziel ist es, die Transfers von Emotionen zwischen den beiden Ländern und deren Bedeutung für die Konstruktion einer europäischen Geschichte der Emotionen zu hinterfragen.

    Abstract: The late nineteenth century saw a rapid increase in colonial conflicts throughout the French and British empires. It was also the period in which the camera began to be widely available. Colonial authorities were quick to recognise the power of this new technology, which they used to humiliate defeated opponents and to project an image of supremacy across the world.Drawing on a wealth of visual materials, from soldiers' personal albums to the collections of press agencies and government archives, this book offers a new account of how conflict photography developed in the decades leading up to the First World War. It explores the various ways in which the camera was used to impose order on subject populations in Africa and Asia and to generate propaganda for the public in Europe, where a visual economy of violence was rapidly taking shape. At the same time, it reveals how photographs could escape the intentions of their creators, offering a means for colonial subjects to push back against oppression. --

    Abstract: This book undertakes a thorough study of Reindeer in the Upper Pleniglacial and Tardiglacial societies in France. It addresses two main topics - the economy of animal resources within the societies and the exploitation of Reindeer organized within the annual cycle, in terms of space and time, between 30,000 and 14,000 cal BP in France. The author proposes an analysis and hypothesis regarding the economy of animal resources and the nomadic cycle of the last Paleolithic hunter-gatherer societies, in order to identify a "Reindeer system." The author discusses the relationship between Reindeer and human mobility and offers some conclusions regarding the annual cycles of nomadism. The volume scrutinizes the distinct eco systems in three regions and its effects on the movements of both human and animal. This book is of interest to zooarchaeologists and prehistorians.

    Abstract: Das Werk behandelt das Tragen eines Kopftuchs durch Lehrerinnen und Schülerinnen in der öffentlichen Verwaltung und in der Justiz. Eingehend behandelt werden die Interpretation des muslimischen Kopftuchs (Symbol der Unterdrückung von Frauen und des politischen Islam?) und das Neutralitätsgebot aus verfassungsrechtlicher und sozialwissenschaftlicher Sicht. Untersucht wird die Entwicklung des laizistischen Modells in Frankreich und der Versuch einer Übertragung dieses Modells auf Deutschland (Berliner Neutralitätsgesetz, Verbot des Kopftuchs von Schülerinnen). Auch das neue Bundesgesetz zum Erscheinungsbild von Beamtinnen und Beamten wird untersucht und auf die Notwendigkeit einer Neujustierung des überkommenen Neutralitätsverständnisses hingewiesen.
    Abstract: The work deals with the wearing of a headscarf by female teachers and students, in public administration and in the judiciary. The interpretation of the Muslim headscarf (symbol of the oppression of women and political Islam?) and the neutrality requirement from a constitutional and sociological perspective are dealt with in depth. The development of the laicist model in France and the attempt to transfer this model to Germany (Berlin neutrality law, ban on the headscarves for schoolgirls) are examined. The new federal law on the appearance of civil servants is also dealt with, as well as the need for a readjustment of the traditional understanding of neutrality.

    Abstract: "Two hundred years after his death, Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) continues to resonate as a fascinating, ambivalent, and polarizing figure. Differences of opinion as to whether Bonaparte should be viewed as the executor of the principles of the French Revolution or as the figure who was principally responsible for their corruption are as pronounced today as they were at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Contributing to what had been an uneasy German relationship with the French Revolution, the rise of Bonaparte was accompanied by a pattern of Franco-German hostilities that inspired both enthusiastic support and outraged dissent in the German-speaking states. The fourteen essays that comprise Inspiration Bonaparte examine the mythologization of Napoleon in German literature of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and explore the significant impact of Napoleonic occupation on a broad range of fields including philosophy, painting, politics, the sciences, education, and film. As the contributions from leading scholars emphasize, the contradictory attitudes toward Bonaparte held by so many prominent German thinkers are a reflection of his enduring status as a figure through whom the trauma of shattered late-Enlightenment expectations of sociopolitical progress and evolving concepts of identity politics is mediated. This includes the placement of complete and still usable tools in the ground, as well as the creation of complex abandonment layers for example in wells or the destruction of immense material wealth in enclosure ditches.0This is the kind of behaviour that archaeologists generally interpret as ritual (often using the label "structured deposition"), but it is surprisingly little discussed for the Linearbandkeramik. This volume thus addresses two main goals. First, it contributes a new approach to the study of Linearbandkeramik world view by focusing on depositional practices more generally and addressing the connections between them. How do the more striking or unusual examples of deposition articulate with routine discard, and what does this tell us about how Linearbandkeramik societies saw these objects and their use? Second, given the wealth of data available for the Linearbandkeramik, there is an opportunity to contribute to the ongoing discussion regarding the variety of depositional phenomena across the European Neolithic and their theoretical and methodological implications.0This book thus combines chapters dealing with routine discard, as well as those concerned with burial evidence, formalised deposition of objects and feasting debris

    Abstract: Conceived as both a vehicle to national prestige and as a civilizing mission, the second French colonial empire (1830-1962) challenged soldiers, scholars, and administrators to understand societies radically different from their own. The resultant networks of anthropological inquiry, however, did not have this effect. Rather, they opened pathways to political and intellectual independence framed in the language of social science, and in the process upended the colonial political system and reshaped the nature of human inquiry in France. While still unequal, French colonial rule in Africa revealed the durability and strength of non-European modes of thought. In this influential new study, historian Douglas W. Leonard examines the political and intellectual repercussions of French efforts to understand and to dominate colonial Africa through the use of anthropology. From General Louis Faidherbe in the 1840s to politician Jacques Soustelle and sociologist Pierre Bourdieu in the 1950s, these French thinkers sowed the seeds of colonial destruction

    Abstract: The Persian Mirror explores France's preoccupation with Persia in the seventeenth century. Long before Montesquieu's Persian Letters, French intellectuals, diplomats and even ordinary Parisians were fascinated by Persia and eagerly consumed travel accounts, fairy tales, and the spectacle the Persian ambassador's visit to Paris and Versailles in 1715. Using diplomatic sources, fiction and printed and painted images, The Persian Mirror describes how the French came to see themselves in Safavid Persia. In doing so, it revises our notions of orientalism and the exotic and suggests that early modern Europeans had more nuanced responses to Asia than previously imagined

    Abstract: Die alliierten Kunstrestitutionsprogramme der ersten Nachkriegsjahre sind bislang kaum untersucht worden. Anknüpfend an zeithistorische Forschungen zur Besatzungspolitik zeichnet Emily Löffler in ihrem Buch die französischen und amerikanischen Programme nach: von 1944 bis zur Übergabe der Kulturrestitution in deutsche Hände zu Beginn der 1950er Jahre. Sie verortet sie im Kontext der alliierten Kultur- und Besatzungspolitik und analysiert, wie bestimmte Konzepte von Kulturerbe und patrimoine die Restitutionen im Spannungsfeld von interalliierter Kooperation und nationalen Eigeninteressen prägten. Das Buch gibt wichtige Impulse für die Geschichte der Kunstgeschichte, für Forschungen zu Restitution und Wiedergutmachung und versteht sich nicht zuletzt als Beitrag zur Grundlagenforschung für die Provenienzforschung

    Abstract: In dieser rechtsvergleichenden Studie entwickelt Antje G. I. Tölle einen Vorschlag de lege ferenda für den Vertragsschluss im elektronischen Geschäftsverkehr, der auf einer Abwägung zwischen den widerstreitenden Interessen nach Sicherheit und Flexibilität beruht. Dabei ordnet er etwa das Downloadshopping als verbindliches Angebot ein und ermöglicht seine Rücknahme. Weitere Themenkomplexe sind der Zugang und Widerruf eines Angebots, sein Erlöschen durch Zeitablauf, Ablehnung oder Verlust der Geschäftsfähigkeit oder den Tod. Für die Analyse werden insgesamt sechs europäische Rechtsordnungen, namentlich Deutschland, England, Frankreich, die Schweiz, die Niederlande und Ungarn herangezogen. Darüber hinaus berücksichtigt die Studie die europäischen Modellgesetze der PECL, des DCFR und des GEK zusammen mit dem UN-Kaufrecht neben diversen historischen Regelwerken wie etwa dem Allgemeinen Preußischen Landrecht oder dem Bürgerlichen Gesetzbuch Sachsens.     Abstract: Karen Offen offers a magisterial reconstruction and analysis of the debates around relations between women and men, how they are constructed, and how they should be organized, that raged in France and its French-speaking neighbors from 1870 to 1920. The 'woman question' encompassed subjects from maternity and childbirth, and the upbringing and education of girls to marriage practices and property law, the organization of households, the distribution of work inside and outside the household, intimate sexual relations, religious beliefs and moral concerns, government-sanctioned prostitution, economic and political citizenship, and the politics of population growth. The book shows how the expansion of economic opportunities for women and the drop in the birth rate further exacerbated the debates over their status, roles, and possibilities. With the onset of the First World War, these debates were temporarily placed on hold, but they would be revived by 1916 and gain momentum during France's post-war recovery

    Abstract: This is the story of how women in France and Britain between 1915 and 1933 appropriated the cultural identity of female war veteran in order to have greater access to public life and a voice in a political climate in which women were rarely heard on the public stage. The 'veterans' covered by this history include former nurses, charity workers, secret service agents and members of resistance networks in occupied territory, as well as members of the British auxiliary corps. What unites these women is how they attempted to present themselves as 'female veterans' in order to gain social advantages and give themselves the right to speak about the war and its legacies. Alison S. Fell also considers the limits of the identity of war veteran for women, considering as an example the wartime and post-war experiences of the female industrial workers who led episodes of industrial action

    Abstract: "Looking closely at the meanings--literal and figurative--of the complex relationship of medieval women to material possessions. The essays gathered in this volume present multifaceted considerations of the intersection of objects and gender within the cultural contexts of late medieval France and England. Some take a material view of objects, showing buildings, books, and pictures as sites of gender negotiation and resistance and as extensions of women's bodies. Others reconsider the concept of objectification in the lives of fictional and historical medieval women by looking closely at their relation to gendered material objects, taken literally as women's possessions and as figurative manifestations of their desires. The opening section looks at how medieval authors imagined fictional and legendary women using particular objects in ways that reinforce or challenge gender roles. These women bring objects into the orbit of gender identity, employing and relating to them in a literal sense, while also taking advantage of their symbolic meanings. The second section focuses on the use of texts both as objects in their own right and as mechanisms by which other objects are defined. The possessors of objects in these essays lived in the world, their lives documented by historical records, yet like their fictional and legendary counterparts, they too used objects for instrumental ends and with symbolic resonances. The final section considers the objectification of medieval women's bodies as well as its limits. While this at times seems to allow for a trade in women, authorial attempts to give definitive shapes and boundaries to women's bodies either complicate the gender boundaries they try to contain or reduce gender to an ideological abstraction.     Abstract: Der Kampf um politische Freiheit prägt seit der Antike die Geschichte der westlichen Welt und ihre politische Kultur. Das Buch beschäftigt sich mit der bislang wenig beachteten Visualisierung der Freiheitsidee, die über Landesgrenzen und Zeitepochen hinweg eine einheitliche symbolische Form aufwies: die Personifizierung der Freiheit mit einer Freiheitsmütze oder einem Freiheitshut. Diese Symbolform war in der Antike, in den Verfassungsdiskussionen Englands und Nordamerikas, in der Französischen Revolution sowie in Nachbarstaaten Frankreichs allgegenwärtig. Seit dem ausgehenden 18. Jahrhundert verband sich die Freiheitssymbolik mit demokratischer Ordnung sowie mit dem Schutz von Menschenrechten. Mit ihrer grenzüberschreitenden visuellen Omnipräsenz beförderte sie die Akzeptanz des westlichen Verfassungsstaates und das freiheitliche politische Bewusstsein der westlichen Welt. Verfolgt werden die Anlässe und Akteure dieser Symbolgeschichte ebenso wie die verschlungenen Wege der Globalisierung der Freiheitssymbolik
