    Abstract: Wind power and solar photovoltaics (PV) are crucial to meeting future energy needs while decarbonising the power sector. Deployment of both technologies has expanded rapidly in recent years, one of the few bright spots in an otherwise bleak picture of clean energy progress. However, the inherent variability of wind power and solar PV raises unique and pressing questions. Can power systems remain reliable and cost-effective while supporting high shares of variable renewable energy (VRE)? And if so, how? Based on a thorough review of the integration challenge, this publication gauges the economic significance of VRE integration impacts, highlights the need for a system-wide approach to integrating high shares of VRE and recommends how to achieve a cost-effective transformation of the power system. This book summarises the results of the third phase of the Grid Integration of VRE (GIVAR) project, undertaken by the IEA over the past two years. It is rooted in a set of seven case studies, comprising 15 countries on four continents. It deepens the technical analysis of previous IEA work and lays out an analytical framework for understanding the economics of VRE integration impacts. Based on detailed modelling, the impact of high shares of VRE on total system costs is analysed. In addition, the four flexible resources which are available to facilitate VRE integration – generation, grid infrastructure, storage and demand side integration – are assessed in terms of their technical performance and cost-effectiveness.

    Abstract: This book presents a reconstruction of the Hellenistic-Roman glass industry from the point of view of raw material procurement. Within the ERC funded ARCHGLASS project, the authors of this work developed new geochemical techniques to provenance primary glass making. They investigated both production and consumer sites of glass, and identified suitable mineral resources for glass making through geological prospecting. Because the source of the raw materials used in the manufacturing of natron glass can be determined, new insights in the trade of this material are revealed. While eastern Mediterranean glass factories were active throughout the Hellenistic to early Islamic period, western Mediterranean and possibly Italian and North African sources also supplied the Mediterranean world with raw glass in early Roman times. By combining archaeological and scientific data, the authors develop new interdisciplinary techniques for an innovative archaeological interpretation of glass trade in the Hellenistic-Roman world, highlighting the development of glass as an economic material

    Abstract: This volume of essays examines the problem of mind, looking at how the problem has appeared to neuroscientists (in the widest sense) from classical antiquity through to contemporary times. Beginning with a look at ventricular neuropsychology in antiquity, this book goes on to look at Spinozan ideas on the links between mind and body, Thomas Willis and the foundation of Neurology, Hooke’s mechanical model of the mind and Joseph Priestley’s approach to the mind-body problem. The volume offers a chapter on the 19th century Ottoman perspective on western thinking. Further chapters trace the work of nineteenth century scholars including George Henry Lewes, Herbert Spencer and Emil du Bois-Reymond. The book covers significant work from the twentieth century, including an examination of Alfred North Whitehead and the history of consciousness, and particular attention is given to the development of quantum consciousness. Chapters on slavery and the self and the development of an understanding of Dualism bring this examination up to date on the latest 21st century work in the field. At the heart of this book is the matter of how we define the problem of consciousness itself: has there been any progress in our understanding of the working of mind and brain?     Abstract: This volume presents current thoughts, research, and findings that were presented at a summit focusing on energy as a cross-cutting concept in education, involving scientists, science education researchers and science educators from across the world. The chapters cover four key questions: what should students know about energy, what can we learn from research on teaching and learning about energy, what are the challenges we are currently facing in teaching students this knowledge, and what needs be done to meet these challenges in the future? In recent years ideas about major transitions in evolution are undergoing a revolutionary change. They include questions about the origin of evolutionary innovation, their genetic and epigenetic background, the role of the phenotype, and of changes in ontogenetic pathways. In the present book, it is argued that it is likewise necessary to question the properties of these innovations and what was qualitatively generated during the macroevolutionary transitions. The author states that a recurring central aspect of macroevolutionary innovations is an increase in individual organismal autonomy whereby it is emancipated from the environment with changes in its capacity for flexibility, self-regulation and self-control of behavior. The first chapters define the concept of autonomy and examine its history and its epistemological context. Later chapters demonstrate how changes in autonomy took place during the major evolutionary transitions and investigate the generation of organs and physiological systems. They synthesize material from various disciplines including zoology, comparative physiology, morphology, molecular biology, neurobiology and ethology. It is argued that the concept is also relevant for understanding the relation of the biological evolution of man to his cultural abilities. Finally the relation of autonomy to adaptation, niche construction, phenotypic plasticity and other factors and patterns in evolution is discussed. The text has a clear perspective from the context of systems biology, arguing that the generation of biological autonomy must be interpreted within an integrative systems approach

    Abstract: Die Integration von Telekommunikation in Europa wurde bislang eher gegenwartsorientiert und nicht historisch betrachtet. Im Gegensatz dazu vergleicht Berenice Ahr internationale Standardisierungen bei grenzüberschreitenden Fernsprechverbindungen in den Jahrzehnten vor dem Ersten und nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg. Anhand repräsentativer Fallbeispiele werden die Strukturen der internationalen Regime, die Willensbildungs- und Entscheidungsprozesse und ihre Akteure sowie die behandelten Standards untersucht. Der Vergleich struktureller, prozessualer und inhaltlicher Aspekte zeigt neben signifikanten Unterschieden auch eine Reihe überraschender Parallelen zwischen infrastruktureller Integration Mitte des 19. Dabei geht es nicht nur um kompatible technische Standards, sondern es ist auch eine Abstimmung von Ideen und Konzepten erforderlich. Auch in der Gegenwart ist zu erleben, wie schwer sich Schritte (zurück) zu einem „europäischen“ Bahnsystem im Widerstreit mit technischer Komplexität, zunehmender Konkurrenz und unterschiedlichen Ideen umsetzen lassen.

    Abstract: Vitalism is understood as impacting the history of the life sciences, medicine and philosophy, representing an epistemological challenge to the dominance of mechanism over the last 200 years, and partly revived with organicism in early theoretical biology. The contributions in this volume portray the history of vitalism from the end of the Enlightenment to the modern day, suggesting some reassessment of what it means both historically and conceptually. As such it includes a wide range of material, employing both historical and philosophical methodologies, and it is divided fairly evenly between 19th and 20th century historical treatments and more contemporary analysis. This volume presents a significant contribution to the current literature in the history and philosophy of science and the history of medicine

Using real-life conversations among visitors as a basis for discussion, the authors interrogate children's responses to the exhibits and by doing so develop an 'informal learning model' and a 'zoo knowledge model' that prompts suggestions for activities that classroom educators can use before, during, and after a zoo visit. Their analysis of the 'visitor voice' informs creative suggestions for how to enhance the educational experiences of young patrons. By assessing visitors' entry knowledge and their interpretations of the exhibits, the authors establish a baseline for zoos that helps them to refine their communication with visitors, for example in expanding knowledge of issues concerning biodiversity and biological conservation. The book includes practical advice for zoo and classroom educators about positive ways to prepare for zoo visits, engaging activities during visits, and follow-up work that maximizes the pedagogical benefits.     Abstract: Welche Bilder wurden und werden in Zoos und Vergnügungsparks wiedergegeben? Jan-Erik Steinkrügers Studie zeigt: Die Themenwelten, für die besonders Carl Hagenbeck und Walt Disney stilprägend waren, (re-)produzieren Bilder anderer Welten. Die Studie widmet sich dem Wandel der Darstellungspraxis als Beispiel thematisierter Räume. Neben der Darstellungsform geraten besonders auch die Darstellungsinhalte in den Blick der Analyse - eine Kombination, die neue Einblicke zulässt in das Phänomen der Thematisierung. Zugleich trägt das Buch zum Verständnis von Tourismus bei - denn Themenwelten sind die von allem Störenden befreite Version des touristischen Blicks.

Trotz zahlreicher Änderungen im Laufe der letzten Jahre sind manche Rechtsfragen nicht eindeutig geklärt, was auch der Besonderheit der Produkte ihrer Herstellung aus lebenden menschlichen Zellen geschuldet ist. Diese Arbeit zeigt die Schwierigkeiten auf, die durch das Ineinandergreifen verschiedener nationaler und europarechtlicher Rechtsvorschriften entstehen und gibt einen Überblick über die rechtliche Einordnung einzelner Schritte des Verarbeitungsprozesses sowie über Fragen bzgl. der Anwendung und Kommerzialisierung von Tissue Engineering- Produkten.
    Abstract: Das Tissue Engineering, die biotechnologische Heranzüchtung menschlichen Gewebes im Labor aus zuvor entnommenen Zellen, unterliegt einer Vielzahl rechtlicher Vorschriften, bei denen es sich um ein Zusammenspiel verschiedener nationaler und europarechtlicher Regelungen handelt. Trotz zahlreicher Änderungen im Laufe der letzten Jahre sind noch nicht alle Rechtsfragen im Zusammenhang mit dem Tissue Engineering und den hergestellten Produkten eindeutig geklärt, was auch der Besonderheit der Produkte – ihrer Herstellung aus lebenden menschlichen Zellen – geschuldet ist. Diese Arbeit zeigt die Schwierigkeiten auf, die durch das Ineinandergreifen verschiedener nationaler und europarechtlicher Rechtsvorschriften entstehen können und gibt einen Überblick über die rechtliche Bewertung einzelner Schritte des Herstellungsverfahrens sowie über bestehende Fragen bei der Anwendung und Kommerzialisierung von Tissue Engineering-Produkten

    Abstract: "Preface The subject of electromagnetics is still a core subject of the undergraduate electrical engineering (EE) curriculum; however, at most of the universities in United States, the time allotted to teach it is cut into half (one 3-credit course instead of two). The present graduates with BS degree in EE being rushed through the same curriculum content in a shorter time often miss the concepts and depend on a lot of formulas which they use as a recipe for some calculations based on an example worked out in the book. Some of them are fortunate to take a follow-up special elective course in microwaves or RF design or antennas or fiber optics, and so on, thus partly reinforcing one application area. Readily available commercial software allows them to do routine calculations and design without having a conceptual understanding of the expected solution. The commercial software is so user-friendly that we usually get a beautiful colored visualization of the solution, even if it is a wrong simulation of the physical problem. After getting one or two mild reprimands from the boss in his new employment after graduation, the new graduate realizes that he needs to have a fairly good idea of what is the appropriate model to be simulated and what qualitative result is to be expected. Though the software is very useful, it is not a substitute for a conceptual understanding of the steps involved in solving the problem. Fortunately, for him, there is probably a university which offers graduate courses and there is an instructor/professor who understands that these bright students recruited by some of the top companies are not less smart than the employees recruited by the company, say a decade or two ago"--
