    Abstract: "Seit etwa 150 Jahren gibt es die Religionsgemeinschaft Jehovas Zeugen in Europa. Ihr Weg in den einzelnen Ländern war auch davon abhängig, wie diese missionierende Gemeinschaft von der Mehrheit der Andersgläubigen, der Staatsmacht und den etablierten Kirchen behandelt wurde. Insofern ist die Geschichte von Jehovas Zeugen in Europa auch eine Geschichte über die gesellschaftliche Verfasstheit dieser Länder - deren Bereitschaft, religiöse Minderheiten zu akzeptieren und zu integrieren. Nicht nur in Diktaturen, sondern auch in manchen demokratischen Staaten erlebten Jehovas Zeugen Unterdrückung und Verfolgung, in anderen konnten sie sich relativ frei entfalten. Wie sich die unterschiedlichen Verhältnisse auf die Religionsgemeinschaft in der jeweiligen nationalen Gesellschaft auswirkten und welche Herausforderungen - zum Teil bis in die Gegenwart - Jehovas Zeugen zu bestehen hatten und noch haben, ist das Thema dieser auf drei Bände angelegten Studie."

    Abstract: In der digitalen Ökonomie gelten Daten als »das neue Öl«. Gerade »personal data« ist aber nicht einfach da, sondern muss produziert werden. Markus Unternährer analysiert, wie aus datengenerierenden Beziehungen beziehungsgenerierende Daten werden.     Abstract: This volume examines some of the major challenges and opportunities for Europe in the light of the intensifying US-China global strategic rivalry. In doing so, the book investigates European roles and behavior in the contemporary US-China-Europe triangular relationship. While the book's focus is on Europe, the contributors originate from, or are based in, the US and China, thus presenting a unique outside-in perspective to the analysis of European conduct in the areas of security, geo-politics, geo-economics, global governance, development, and climate change. Each area is investigated by one American and one Chinese scholar, respectively, presenting the different views held on Europe’s behavior and positioning in the US and China. In addition to providing critical assessments of Europe’s roles and performance as seen through the prism of their respective country, contributors also pose concrete policy recommendations for Europe. Kamil Zwolski is Associate Professor in International Politics at the University of Southampton, UK, and Jean Monnet Chair of European Security Governance. His research interests include the theory and practice of European security and its governance, Europe-Russia relations and the role of the EU/NATO in European security.     Abstract: Over a million Kurdish-Yezidi refugees are dispersed across European cities and towns. However, they are neither recognized as a distinct community of stateless immigrants nor as a distinct European ethnic or religious minority. They are frequently utilized as data sources without having a voice to address their challenges. This oral testimony project, moving beyond, but contributing to, conventional academic research, provides these communities with a space to tackle multiple questions in their own languages and with their own voices. The book seeks to answer what drives their departures from their home countries, how they escape, what shapes their lives in receiving cities, and finally, how homeland affairs influence their lives in new environments. By addressing all these themes, this book presents refugee-centric knowledge by and with refugees as objects and subjects of their narratives and transcends neoliberal humanitarian, state-centric, and colonial hegemonic epistemes that limit refugees' epistemic capabilities and viewpoints. Veysi Dag is a research fellow of the Minerva Foundation at the Department of International Relations at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He is also a research associate at SOAS, University of London. His research interests focus on studies of migration and diaspora, governance, social movements and transnationalism, comparative politics with a focus on refugee and migration policies in Europe, peacebuilding and conflict transformation, and regional policy analysis with a focus on Middle Eastern politics and the Kurdish-Turkish conflict.

It draws on an EU COST Action research network on Police Stops which engaged academics and practitioners from 29 countries to better understand the practice of police stops. It begins by examining how police stops are defined and the various legal rules and levels of accountability afforded. The chapters are arranged by theme to focus on a core aspect of the governance of police stops. These include: legal frameworks and police discretion; internal governance; external accountability and civilian oversight; possibilities for legal recourse; and the different roles of data and technology. Each compares the distinct approaches evident across Europe, often employing case studies. The book adopts a critical approach, acknowledging governance as contested and involving diverse (state, non-state and supranational) actors.     Abstract: Grenzen strukturieren nicht nur die Ordnung von Landschaft und Herrschaft, sondern auch von Gesellschaft. Als soziale Konstrukte vereindeutigen sie Zustände, öffnen aber auch Räume für Aushandlungen und Überschreitungen. In der Moderne dienten praktische und metaphorische »Grenzgänge« dazu, Beziehungen, die Verhältnisse gesellschaftlicher Teilsysteme und die Reichweite von Normen zu klären. Die Beiträger*innen schauen auf die Denkfigur des »Grenzgangs«, die es ermöglicht, zentrale Fragen moderner Gesellschaften zusammenzudenken: Gewaltvolle Identitätskämpfe, der Umgang mit funktionaler Differenzierung und mit der Fragilität von Werten und Wissen offenbaren sich als Praktiken, mit denen Grenzen gezogen, überquert oder ausgehandelt wurden

    Abstract: Pierre Bourdieu and Abdelmalek Sayad met in their twenties in the midst of the Algerian war of independence. From their first meeting, a strong intellectual friendship was born between the French philosopher and the activist from the colony, nourished by the same desire to understand the world in order to change it.The work of both men was driven by the necessity of putting knowledge to use, whether by unveiling the relations of domination that structured life in Algeria or by opening emancipatory perspectives for the Algerian people. Colonies were, of course, a customary site of ethnographic work, but Bourdieu and Sayad refused to sacrifice scientific rigor to political expediency, even as Algeria descended deeper into war. Indeed, the act of understanding as a political commitment to the transformation of society lay at the heart of their project.Based on extensive interviews and deep archival work, Amín Pérez rediscovers the anticolonial origins of the pathbreaking social thought of these brilliant thinkers. Bourdieu and Sayad, he argues, forged another way of doing politics, laying the foundations of a revolutionary pedagogy, not just for anticolonial liberation but for true social emancipation

    Abstract: In der juristischen Literatur wird der Begriff der "Pfadabhängigkeit" zumeist metaphorisch verwendet. Anders ist dies in den benachbarten Gesellschaftswissenschaften, wo das gleichnamige Konzept der Erklärung insbesondere institutioneller Entwicklungsprozesse dient. Nico Schröter geht der Frage nach, ob und wie eine Rezeption dieses Konzepts auch für die Rechtswissenschaft erkenntnisversprechend ist. Dabei kann eine (informierte) Rezeption insbesondere dazu dienen, informelle Strukturbildungsprozesse im Recht besser zu verstehen. So bietet Pfadabhängigkeit eine plausible Erklärung für die relative Stabilität judikativer Entscheidungsstandards und rechtsdogmatischer Sätze sowie - in Ansätzen - auch dafür, inwieweit diese einem Wandel unterliegen. Die Rezeption des Pfadabhängigkeitskonzepts liefert daher eine Antwort auf bestehende Theoriedefizite bei der Erklärung rechtlicher Phänomene

    Abstract: Spätestens seit der Corona-Pandemie werden Verschwörungstheorien zunehmend als gesellschaftspolitisches Problem wahrgenommen und sind zum Politikum geworden. Ängste vor Verschwörungen einerseits und Ängste vor Verschwörungstheorien andererseits schaukeln sich offenbar gegenseitig hoch.     Abstract: The history of Europe in the 20th century is closely tied to the history of urban planning. Social and economic progress but also the brute treatment of people and nature throughout Europe were possible due to the use of urban planning and the other levels of spatial planning. Thereby, planning has constituted itself in Europe as an international subject. Since its emergence, through intense exchange but also competition, despite country differences, planning has developed as a European field of practice and scientific discipline. Planning is here much more than the addition of individual histories; however, historiography has treated this history very selective regarding geography and content. This book searches for an understanding of the historiography of planning in a European dimension. Scholars from Eastern and Western, Southern and Northern Europe address the issues of the public led production of city and the social functions of urban planning in capitalist and state-socialist countries.     Abstract: Os estudos reunidos nesta obra constituem um contributo importante para o alargamento do conhecimento das relações interculturais estabelecidas entre a Europa, nomeadamente Portugal, e a China, durante os séculos XVII e XVIII. Os treze textos revelam aspectos pouco conhecidos sobre arquivos e materiais e trazem à luz um conjunto de fundos documentais, boa parte deles inéditos. Em estreita articulação com os núcleos de documentação publicados na plataforma digital Res Sinicae, surgem abordadas obras e percursos colectivos e individuais de alguns agentes dessa interculturalidade, nomeadamente, alguns jesuítas portugueses da vice-província da China e da província do Japão: Álvaro Semedo (1585–1658), Francisco Furtado (1587–1653), António de Gouveia (1592/1594–1677), Francisco Cardim (1596–1659), Tomás Pereira (1646–1708) e Marcelo Leitão (1679–1755). O livro dá ainda a conhecer algumas das vias e meios da transmissão cultural e científica operada nos dois sentidos, entre a China e a Europa, no período 1600–1800. São tratados temas como a recepção de Martino Martini em Portugal, em 1657; o papel de jesuítas estrangeiros no ensino da matemática nos colégios jesuítas de Évora e de Lisboa, no século XVIII; a disseminação da astrologia europeia na Ásia; ou, ainda, de que forma a sinologia ocidental, já no século XIX, deixou de ser um campo de conhecimento dominado por missionários católicos. O livro «Res Sinicae». Pessoas, papéis e intercâmbios culturais entre a Europa e a China (1600–1800) reúne um conjunto de estudos inicialmente apresentados nas Jornadas «Res Sinicae 2021. Arquivos e Materiais», realizadas a 15 e 16 de Abril desse ano. Posteriormente, outros textos foram incorporados ao livro de modo a completar a temática em estudo. Os textos aqui publicados foram, numa primeira fase, objecto de avaliação do Conselho Editorial do projecto Res Sinicae e, numa segunda fase, alvo de peer review. A publicação desta obra, no quadro do projecto da Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) intitulado «Res Sinicae. Base digital de fontes documentais em latim e em português sobre a China (séculos XVI a XVIII). Levantamento, edição, tradução e estudos» (PTDC/LLT-OUT/31941/2017), albergado no Centro de Estudos Clássicos da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa, responde a uma das suas principais prioridades, a de produção e divulgação dos resultados científicos da investigação desenvolvida pela equipa e colaboradores. Os treze estudos reunidos neste volume revelam um conjunto de fundos documentais, boa parte deles inéditos, e apontam para novas vias de investigação no quadro das relações interculturais estabelecidas entre a Europa, com enfoque especial para Portugal, e a China, entre 1600 e 1800.     Abstract: This book deals with the economic impact of technological changes and the rise of passenger shipping on social relations on board and ashore in European shipping industries between c.1850 and 2000. The changes in motive power, communication techniques and positioning technologies and the rise of passenger shipping went together with the creation of new tasks and functions and the marginalization or disappearance of traditional jobs and skills. This book presents case-studies on changes in different maritime professions between the middle of the nineteenth century and the end of the twentieth century, covering the shipping industries of a variety of seafaring countries in Europe. The subjects include changes in maritime labour at large, changes in specific groups of deck, catering or engine room personnel, such as captains, cooks, catering personnel, engineers, or radio-operators. A number of chapters employ a prosopographical or micro-historical approach, while others apply a spatial perspective, analyze business records, materials from professional associations or distil information from large sets of quantitative data. This book will be of interest to academics and students of economic history, maritime and labour history. Karel Davids is Professor Emeritus of Economic and Social History at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He has published and taught on economic and social history, maritime history, the history of technology and global history. Joost Schokkenbroek has been Executive Director of the Vancouver Maritime Museum since July 2017. Prior to this he was affiliated with The Kendall Whaling Museum in the USA (1988-1990) and Het Scheepvaartmuseum (The Dutch National Maritime Museum) in Amsterdam (1991-2017), where he worked as Chief Curator, in combination with a Professorship of Maritime History and Maritime Heritage at Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. .

    Abstract: "In the last 20 years, the related phenomena of honour-based violence and forced marriages have received increasing attention at the international and European level. Punitive responses towards this type of violence have been adopted, including ad hoc criminalisation and legislation containing direct references to the concepts of honour, culture and tradition. However, criminal law-based responses present several shortcomings and have often disregarded the specific needs that victims of such crimes might encounter. This book examines the possibility of using alternative programmes to address cases of honour-based violence and forced marriages. After reviewing previous existing literature, it presents new empirical data. Introducing a case-study from the United Kingdom, the book recalls the debate on Sharia Councils and the Muslim Arbitration Tribunal but examines instead other community-based, secular, programmes. By comparison, a study from Norway on the work of the National Mediation Agency and the so-called Cross-Cultural Transformative Mediation model is investigated as part of a larger multi-agency approach. Ultimately, in an attempt to reconcile pluralism and the rule of law, the book proposes effective ways to tackle honour crimes based on cooperation and individualisation of the proceedings, and capable of improving women's access to justice and reducing secondary victimisation. The book will be essential reading for researchers and academics in Law, Criminology, Sociology, and Anthropology and for policy-makers and practitioners working with honour-based violence cases"--

    Abstract: This book reveals the importance of personal letters in the history of European women between the year 1000 and the advent of the telephone. It explores the changing ways that women used correspondence for self-expression and political mobilization over this period, enabling them to navigate the myriad gendered restrictions that limited women s engagement in the world. Whether written from the medieval cloister, or the renaissance court, or the artisan s workshop, or the drawing room, letters crossed geographical and social distance and were mobile in ways that women themselves could not always be. Women wrote to govern, to argue, to plead, and to demand. They also wrote to express love and intimacy, and in so doing, to explain and to understand themselves. This book argues that the personal letter was a crucial place for European women s self-fashioning, and that exploring the history of their letters offers a profound insight into their subjectivity and agency over time

    Abstract: Some manufacturing activities are among the most difficult human activities to make climate neutral and they are typically regionally concentrated. Across Europe these regions are often socioeconomically relatively weak. Yet these sectors provide relatively well-paid jobs in many of these regions. Some of these regions may also have more difficult access to infrastructure to provide the hydrogen, carbon capture and storage and zero-emission freight, which can be important to some of these activities. Industrial transitions to climate neutrality therefore have regional development implications. Since regions differ in their socio-economic conditions, understanding these regional development implications will help policy makers prepare a just transition. This publication identifies manufacturing activities that are particularly difficult to decarbonise and the transformations they require. It shows how these activities are distributed across European regions, focusing on employment at emission-intensive production locations. It identifies conditions for getting access to needed infrastructure and how access conditions differ across regions. It investigates the socio-economic vulnerabilities of affected regions, their manufacturing businesses and workers. In some regions, workers and firms may be particularly vulnerable, for example, because of low-skill jobs, type of employment contract or low productivity.

    Abstract: This book examines similarities and differences in 31 European governments’ responses to the COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic hit Europe in early 2020. It spread across the continent during the Spring while anxious electorates were treated to news reports about health systems under duress and frustrated attempts by public procurement officials to obtain adequate supplies of medical and protective equipment. Over the next 15–18 months considered by this book, national responses exhibited both similarities and profound variations as the different endeavours to regulate social interactions constituted a stress test for political systems across Europe.     Abstract: Why does an entire society believe that there are witches who must be burned? What roles did the emerging 'state', the professions of clerics and jurists, and the public involved play in each case? And how could this project be finished? From a sociological point of view, the findings of recent international research on witches provide a model of a more general, highly ambivalent, 'pastoral' attitude, according to which a shepherd has to care for the welfare of his flock as well as for its erring sheep. The first main part describes the clerical initial situation, which developed the 'Dominican' demonological model of witchcraft on the basis of the still dominant magico-religious mentality in the 15th century. A model, according to the second part of the book, which then in the course of the 16th century in Western Europe increasingly fell into the hands of the not so innocent jurists. From there it developed into a legal witch persecution that realized the early European witch model from the village witch to the mass persecutions to the late child witches. The third part describes how witch persecutions slowly became less important towards the end of the 17th century as a general witchcraft 'politics' game in the transition from a confessional state to a (court) 'civil service' state. The author Prof. Dr. Stephan Quensel is a lawyer and criminologist. Until his retirement in 2002, he was a professor in the Department of Resocialization and Rehabilitation in the Sociology program at the University of Bremen. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence. A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content.

    Abstract: This book discusses the emerging threats to European stability in different borderland regions, from the Greater Middle East to the Eastern Mediterranean, the Balkans and the Black Sea. It highlights the specific geopolitical risks that could, left unchecked, have global repercussions. The book shows how recent events have exasperated underlying problems that have been slowly destabilizing each of these regions for years. It also looks at the geopolitical constraints and objectives of the countries within these regions to build a basis for understanding their current and future security challenges. While doing so, the book discusses the European borderlands in a non-traditional way, proposing a specific framework to study them, going beyond historical analysis and employing a heuristic process and in-depth socio-economic analysis to understand regional power relations and trends. It develops the key concepts of "core borderland" and "geopolitical node" to understand the future challenges that Europe in particular and Eurasia, in general, will face, discussing specific features shaping current affairs and identifying the main drivers - countries and specific regional elements - for the future stability of the borderlands. This book will appeal to students and scholars of international relations, as well as policy-makers, practitioners, and international organizations interested in a better understanding of current and future challenges at Europe's borderlands and the security risks the European continent faces.

    Abstract: Seit mehr als 100 Jahren begleiten Soziolog*innen gesellschaftliche Entwicklungen mit ihren Überlegungen, beobachten und beschreiben gesellschaftliche Spannungen entlang unterschiedlicher Bruchlinien und Konjunkturen. Dieser Band geht der Frage nach, wie sich die Soziologie in unterschiedlichen Phasen ihrer Fachgeschichte mit wirtschaftlichen, politischen, sozialen und kulturellen Spannungen, mit Macht- und Ungleichheitsstrukturen und mit daraus resultierenden Krisen auseinandergesetzt hat. Eng damit verbunden ist die Frage, wie gesellschaftliche Rahmenbedingungen die Entwicklung der Soziologie beeinflusst haben, vielleicht sogar zu Motoren für das Fach geworden sind. Die Beiträge nähern sich auf unterschiedliche Weise dem historischen Zusammenhang zwischen gesellschaftlichen Spannungsverhältnissen und Soziologie in Zeiten von Krisen.     Abstract: This book, a follow-up publication to the 2016 volume Foreign Fighters under International Law and Beyond, zooms in on the responses that the international community and individual States are implementing in response to (prospective and actual) returning foreign fighters (FFs) and their families, focusing on returnees from Syria and Iraq to European countries. As States and international organisations are still ‘learning by doing’, the role of the academic community is to help steer the process by bridging the divide between international standards and their implementation at the national level and between security concerns and human rights law. Furthermore, the academic community can and should assist in identifying ways forward that are both effective, sustainable and international law-compliant. Those are, ultimately, the goals that the present volume seeks to pursue.     Abstract: In state formation research, princely houses have been a blind spot. The development of states has been discussed from many perspectives, like interstate competition, internal social conflicts, fiscal-military developments, etc., but at the centre of most European states, there was a princely house. These ruling houses have been overlooked in studies about state formation. What's more, when discussing such dynasties, the vertical chronological perspective (grandfather-father-son) is all dominating, for instance in the focus on dynastic continuity, dynastic culture and representation, and the like. This collection of essays highlights the horizontal perspective (ruler, all children, siblings, cousins), in asking how the members of a princely family acted as a power network. The quest is to develop an understanding how this family network interplayed with other factors in the state formation process. This collection contains several insights and lessons learnt for scholars as well as practitioners of policing.” —Marleen Easton, Professor and head of the research group 'Governing and Policing Security' (GaPS) at the Department of Public Governance and Management at Ghent University, Belgium This book critically examines how countries across Europe have dealt with the COVID crisis from a policing and security perspective. Across the chapters, contributors from different countries examine the data, press coverage, and provide professional observations on how policing, law enforcement, police powers and community relations were managed. They focus on how security and governmental actors often failed to align with the formal scripts that were specifically designed for crisis-management, resulting in the wavering application of professional discretion and coercive powers. Their different approaches were evident: in some regions police were less dominantly visible compared to other regions, where the police used a top-down visible and repressive stance vis-à-vis public alignment with COVID rules, including the imposition of lockdown and curfews. Some contributors draw on data from the COROPOL (Corona Policing) Monitor which collated data on crime, plural policing and public order in Europe and around the world during the early phases of the COVID crisis. Overall, this book seeks to provide comparative critical insights and commentary as well as a practical and operational understanding of security governance during the COVID-19 crisis and the lessons learned to improve future preparedness. Monica den Boer is Professor of Military Policing Operations at the Netherlands Defence Academy. Her primary research focus is on the evolution of military policing, as well as border policing, international policing, urban policing and the policing of organised crime and terrorism. She served as member of the Dutch national parliament from 2017 to 2020. Prior to this she worked in several academic and professional environments, including the Police Academy of the Netherlands and the VU University Amsterdam. Eric Bervoets is a police scientist and criminologist. He has been active as a researcher since 1997. After a master's degree in public administration at Rotterdam Erasmus University, the Netherlands, Bervoets obtained his PhD in 2006 with a dissertation on policing troubled neighbourhoods. In 2020, he was appointed Research Fellow at the Netherlands Defence Academy. Linda Hak obtained her BSc in Criminology at Erasmus University and a master’s degree in Legal Psychology at Maastricht University, the Netherlands. She served as a research intern at Bureau Bervoets and is employed as a detective assistant for the National Police of the Netherlands.
