    Kurzfassung: Waiting for the Revolution to End explores the Syrian revolution through the experiences of citizens in exile. Based on more than three years of embedded fieldwork with Syrians displaced in the border city of Gaziantep (southern Turkey), the book places the Syrian revolution and its tragic aftermath under ethnographic scrutiny. It charts the evolution from peaceful uprising (2011) to armed confrontation (2012), descent into fully fledged conflict (2013) and finally to proxy war (2015), to propose an understanding of revolution beyond success and failure. While the Assad regime remains in place, the Syrian revolution (al-thawra) still holds a transformational power that can be located on intimate and world-making scales. Charlotte Al-Khalili traces the unintended consequences of revolution and its unexpected consequences to reveal the reshaping of Syrian life-worlds and exiles’ evolving theorizations, experiences and imaginations of al-thawra. She describes the in-between spatio-temporal realm inhabited by Syrians displaced to Turkey as they await the revolution’s outcomes, and maps the revolution’s multidimensional and multi-scalar effects on their everyday life. By following the chronology of events inside Syria and Syrians’ geography of displacement, the book makes the relation between revolution and displacement its centerpiece, both as an ethnographic object and an analytical device.     Kurzfassung: The history of Europe in the 20th century is closely tied to the history of urban planning. Social and economic progress but also the brute treatment of people and nature throughout Europe were possible due to the use of urban planning and the other levels of spatial planning. Thereby, planning has constituted itself in Europe as an international subject. Since its emergence, through intense exchange but also competition, despite country differences, planning has developed as a European field of practice and scientific discipline. Planning is here much more than the addition of individual histories; however, historiography has treated this history very selective regarding geography and content. This book searches for an understanding of the historiography of planning in a European dimension. Scholars from Eastern and Western, Southern and Northern Europe address the issues of the public led production of city and the social functions of urban planning in capitalist and state-socialist countries.     Kurzfassung: Die Covid-19-Pandemie fordert die europäische Idee heraus: Denn nicht nur die EU-Außengrenzen, sondern auch Binnengrenzen innerhalb des Schengen-Raums wurden ab Frühjahr 2020 wieder verstärkt kontrolliert, durch an deren Überquerung anknüpfende Quarantäne- und Test-Vorschriften zum Hindernis oder auch zeitweise ganz geschlossen. Damit sind die geographischen Grenzverläufe für Berufspendelnde, für Ausflügler:innen oder für Einkaufende wieder ,real‘. Doch reichen die Auswirkungen über Transit, Tourismus und Handel weit hinaus: Mit den verstärkten Kontrollen, Quarantänepflichten und Schließungen verändert sich auch die Wirkung der territorialen Grenz(ziehung)en. Das betrifft schließlich auch die grenzüberschreitende Zusammenarbeit in binneneuropäischen Grenzregionen.     Kurzfassung: This book examines prisons and imprisonment. Historically, prisons and prisoners have been a source of interest to the general public. However, despite near universal acceptance of imprisonment as a feature of society, the reality of prison life, and the effects it has on individuals and communities, remain a mystery to many. Using academic scholarship, empirical research, government papers, policy reports, and accounts from lived experiences of the institution, this book analyses the complexities and contradictions of prison life, the place of the prison in twenty-first century society, and its prospects for the future. Across the chapters, contributors from different countries examine the data, press coverage, and provide professional observations on how policing, law enforcement, police powers and community relations were managed. They focus on how security and governmental actors often failed to align with the formal scripts that were specifically designed for crisis-management, resulting in the wavering application of professional discretion and coercive powers. Their different approaches were evident: in some regions police were less dominantly visible compared to other regions, where the police used a top-down visible and repressive stance vis-à-vis public alignment with COVID rules, including the imposition of lockdown and curfews. Some contributors draw on data from the COROPOL (Corona Policing) Monitor which collated data on crime, plural policing and public order in Europe and around the world during the early phases of the COVID crisis. Overall, this book seeks to provide comparative critical insights and commentary as well as a practical and operational understanding of security governance during the COVID-19 crisis and the lessons learned to improve future preparedness. Monica den Boer is Professor of Military Policing Operations at the Netherlands Defence Academy. Her primary research focus is on the evolution of military policing, as well as border policing, international policing, urban policing and the policing of organised crime and terrorism. She served as member of the Dutch national parliament from 2017 to 2020. Prior to this she worked in several academic and professional environments, including the Police Academy of the Netherlands and the VU University Amsterdam. Eric Bervoets is a police scientist and criminologist. He has been active as a researcher since 1997. After a master's degree in public administration at Rotterdam Erasmus University, the Netherlands, Bervoets obtained his PhD in 2006 with a dissertation on policing troubled neighbourhoods. In 2020, he was appointed Research Fellow at the Netherlands Defence Academy. Linda Hak obtained her BSc in Criminology at Erasmus University and a master’s degree in Legal Psychology at Maastricht University, the Netherlands. She served as a research intern at Bureau Bervoets and is employed as a detective assistant for the National Police of the Netherlands.

    Kurzfassung: Zugang zu Land ist begehrt und umkämpft. Das verdeutlichen Konflikte, die weltweit im Zusammenhang mit land grabbing auftreten. Wie aber lassen sich Entstehung und Verlauf dieser Konflikte erklären? Dieser Frage nähert sich Sarah Kirst in einer Fallstudie zu zwei Konflikten um Zugang zu Land im Kontext der Umsetzung agrarindustrieller Vorhaben in Ghana. Aus machtkritischer Perspektive beleuchtet sie die Rolle traditioneller Autoritäten, die zentrale Akteur*innen in diesen Konflikten sind. Ihre Analyse entschlüsselt die Bedeutung unterschiedlicher Machtformen für Konfliktentstehung und -verlauf und zeigt soziale Ungleichheitsverhältnisse im Kontext von land grabbing auf

    Kurzfassung: This volume analyzes the development of the reactions to Covid-19 by governments, the public and the crime patterns in 16 European countries. All countries are members of the European Union and share common European norms and values, but the Covid-19 pandemic can serve as an example of how these norms and values are interpreted differently with regard to people’s trust in public institutions, governmental control strategies, dealing with fear, anxiety and other emotional responses to the new virus, crime patterns and law enforcement priorities to prevent and combat them. The volume provides empirical data based on available statistics, media analysis and qualitative data from interviews and observations, and examines the similarities and differences in crime patterns and the consequences for local communities and law enforcement priorities. .

    Kurzfassung: The concept of »postmigration« has recently gained importance in the context of European societies' obsession with migration and integration along with emerging new forms of exclusion and nationalisms. This book introduces ongoing debates on the developing concept of »postmigration« and how it can be applied to arts and culture. While the concept has mainly gained traction in the cultural scene in Berlin, Germany, the contributions expand the field of study by attending to cultural expressions in literature, theatre, film, and art across various European societies, such as the United Kingdom, France, Finland, Denmark, and Germany. By doing so, they highlight this concept's potential and show how it can offer new perspectives on transformations caused by migration.

    Kurzfassung: Shared Margins tells of writers, writing, and literary milieus in Alexandria, Egypt's second city. It de-centres cosmopolitan avant-gardes and secular-revolutionary aesthetics that have been intensively documented and studied since 2011. Instead, it offers a fieldwork-based account of various milieus and styles, and their common grounds and lines of division. Structured in two parts, Shared Margins gives an account of literature as a social practice embedded in milieus that at once enable and limit literary imagination, and of a life-worldly experience of plurality in absence of pluralism that marks literary engagements with the intimate and social realities of Alexandria after 2011. Literary writing, this book argues, has marginality as an at once enabling and limiting condition. It provides shared spaces of imaginary excess that may go beyond the taken-for-granted of a societal milieu, and yet are never unlimited. Literary imagination is part and parcel of such social conflicts and transformations, its role being neither one of resistance against power nor of guidance towards norms, but rather one of open-ended complicity

    Kurzfassung: To what extent can Islam be localized in an increasingly interconnected world? The contributions to this volume investigate different facets of Muslim lives in the context of increasingly dense transregional connections, highlighting how the circulation of ideas about 'Muslimness' contributed to the shaping of specific ideas about what constitutes Islam and its role in society and politics. Infrastructural changes have prompted the intensification of scholarly and trade networks, prompted the circulation of new literary genres or shaped stereotypical images of Muslims. This, in turn, had consequences in widely differing fields such as self-representation and governance of Muslims. The contributions in this volume explore this issue in geographical contexts ranging from South Asia to Europe and the US. Coming from the disciplines of history, anthropology, religious studies, literary studies and political science, the authors collectively demonstrate the need to combine a translocal perspective with very specific local and historical constellations. The book complicates conventional academic divisions and invites to think in historically specific translocal contexts

    Kurzfassung: Long description: Bevölkerungspolitik hat sich seit der UN-Bevölkerungs-Konferenz in Kairo 1994 grundlegend verändert. Geburtensteuernde Zwangsmaßnahmen wurden offiziell abgeschafft und selbstbestimmte Fortpflanzung auf die Grundlage von Menschenrechten gestellt. Allerdings sind auch die hier zugrunde liegenden Konzepte nicht frei von normativen Prämissen in Bezug auf Geschlecht, Sexualität, Ethnie und Gesundheit. Franziska Schutzbach stellt in ihrer Untersuchung - in deren Zentrum die Adaption der UN-Agenda im europäischen Kontext steht - heraus, dass die gegenwärtige Essenzialisierung der Generativität im Rahmen einer heteronormativen Zweigeschlechtlichkeit zentral für die Reproduktion der herrschenden Gesellschafts- und Geschlechterverhältnisse ist

    Kurzfassung: Die vermeintliche Beschleunigung des Lebenstempos ist eine der populärsten Annahmen der Gegenwart. Besonders Medien wird in diesem Prozess eine verstärkende Rolle zugesprochen. Die Studie von Stephan O. Görland analysiert die Interdependenzen zwischen Zeitumgang und praktiken mit mobilen Medien und Zeiterleben in Warte- und Transitzeiten, sog. Interimszeiten. Dazu wird eine Methodentriangulation verwendet. Im Ergebnis zeigt sich, dass die Nutzung von mobilen Medien in Interimszeiten zu einem Gefühl der Beschleunigung führt und Nutzerinnen und Nutzer mittels verschiedener Zeitpraktiken versuchen, diese Zeitspannen optimal zu nutzen. Der Autor liefert eine erstmalige empirische Analyse von Beschleunigung und Medien sowie neue Einblicke in die mediale Ausgestaltung von Interimszeiten. Görland ist wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Zentrum für Medien-, Kommunikations- und Informationsforschung der Universität Bremen.     Kurzfassung: Current understandings of ageing and diversity are impoverished in three main ways. Firstly, with regards to thinking about what inequalities operate in later life there has been an excessive preoccupation with economic resources. On the other hand, less attention has been paid to cultural norms and values, other resources, wider social processes, political participation and community engagement. Secondly, in terms of thinking about the 'who' of inequality, this has so far been limited to a very narrow range of minority populations. Finally, when considering the 'how' of inequality, social gerontology's theoretical analyses remain under-developed. The overall effect of these issues is that social gerontology remains deeply embedded in normative assumptions which serve to exclude a wide range of older people. This book aims to challenge and provoke the above described normativity and offer an alternative approach which highlights the heterogeneity and diversity of ageing.

    Kurzfassung: For a decade now, borders in Europe have been back on the political agenda. Border research has responded and is breaking new ground in thinking about and exploring borders. This book follows this development and strengthens a perspective that is interested in life realities and that focuses on everyday cultural experiences of borders. The authors reconstruct such experiences in the context of different forms of migration and mobility as well as language contact situations and are sensitive to the freedom of the participants. In this way, they empirically identify everyday cultural usage or appropriation strategies of borders as vastly different experiences of borders. The readers of this volume will gain insights into current developments in border research and liefe realities in Europe where borders are (made) relevant. With contributions by Christian Wille, Birte Nienaber, Carsten Yndigegn, Isabelle Pigeron-Piroth, Rachid Belkacem, Ursula Roos, Elisabeth Boesen, Ariela House, Ignacy Jóźwiak, Corinne Martin, Erika Kalocsányiová, Xosé-Afonso Álvarez, Konstanze Jungbluth, Florian Dost, Nicole Richter, Dominik Gerst Seit einem Jahrzehnt stehen Grenzen in Europa wieder auf der politischen Agenda. Die Grenzforschung hat darauf reagiert und schlägt neue Wege ein, um Grenzen zu denken und zu untersuchen. Das Buch folgt dieser Entwicklung und macht eine Perspektive stark, die sich für Lebenswirklichkeiten interessiert und die alltagskulturelle Erfahrung der Grenze in den Blick rückt. Die Autor_innen rekonstruieren solche Erfahrungen im Kontext verschiedener Migrations- und Mobilitätsformen sowie Sprachkontaktsituationen und sind sensibel für die Gestaltungsspielräume der Akteure.     Kurzfassung: Das Handbuch zeichnet die Entwicklung des gerichtlichen Verwaltungsrechtsschutzes vom 19. Jahrhundert bis zur Gegenwart vor dem jeweiligen politischen, sozialen und rechtskulturellen Hintergrund nach, deutet sie und ordnet sie im europäischen Vergleich ein. Zugleich werden den Lesern die maßgeblichen Primärquellen zugänglich gemacht. Dazu wird die historische Entwicklung der Verwaltungsgerichtsbarkeit in Deutschland und Europa in Länderberichten nachgezeichnet; Querschnittsanalysen sowie Beiträge zum Rechtsschutz auf europäischer und internationaler Ebene eröffnen eine übergreifende Perspektive. Erstmals analysiert das Handbuch dabei systematisch alle in Deutschland eingeführten Systeme der Verwaltungsgerichtsbarkeit, von Baden (1864) bis Bremen (1924). Vorangestellt sind Beiträge zu den Formen der Verwaltungskontrolle auf Reichsebene einschließlich ihrer Ursprünge sowie die Vorgeschichte in den Ländern. Auch die Besatzungszeit und die Zusammenführung der verschiedenen Traditionen in der Verwaltungsgerichtsordnung werden einschließlich der nachfolgenden Reformetappen ausführlich behandelt. Die Entwicklung des Verwaltungsrechtsschutzes in anderen europäischen Staaten wird bis hin zur Gegenwart ebenfalls in Einzeldarstellungen präsentiert und durch Vergleichs- und Querschnittsanalysen eingeordnet. Über den Titel des Handbuchs hinaus wird der Blick auf ausgewählte, mit Europa in engem Rezeptionszusammenhang stehende Systeme des Verwaltungsrechtsschutzes erweitert. Der praktische Nutzen des Handbuchs wird dadurch erhöht, dass Originalquellen über die Errichtung, die Zuständigkeiten und das Verfahren der Verwaltungsgerichte abgedruckt sind. Das mit Unterstützung des Bundesministeriums der Justiz edierte Werk, mit dem mehrere Länder erstmals eine Geschichtsschreibung ihrer Verwaltungsgerichtsbarkeit erhalten, vereint fachlich ausgewiesene Autoren aus Wissenschaft und Praxis

    Kurzfassung: Im Jahr 2006 hat die Europäische Kommission ihre vertragliche Handelspolitik neu ausgerichtet. Seitdem setzt sie auf den Abschluss reformierter bilateraler Handelsverträge mit strategischen Partnerstaaten, in welche Vorschriften und Konzepte des europäischen Beihilfenrechts exportiert werden sollen, um im globalisierten Umfeld verbesserte Wettbewerbsbedingungen zu schaffen. Felix Neumann analysiert erstmalig die subventionsrechtlichen Vorschriften dieser bilateralen Übereinkünfte der neuen Generation, zeigt die Grenzen für eine Europäisierung des internationalen Subventionsrechts mittels bilateraler Handelsabkommen auf und betrachtet die Interdependenzen zwischen den verschiedenen Subventionsordnungen.
