    Abstract: Über Religion wird seit jeher und offenbar unermüdlich gestritten. Auch in Deutschland geben aktuell religiöse Symbole im öffentlichen Raum, Missbrauchsskandale in den christlichen Kirchen und auch religiöser Fundamentalismus Anlass für leidenschaftlich geführte Debatten über den angemessenen Umgang mit Religion in liberalen Demokratien. Es verankert die Religionsfreiheit und definiert das Verhältnis zwischen Staat und Religionsgemeinschaften.

Leading commentators, United Kingdom courts, and the European Court of Human Rights have de-emphasised the special importance of religious liberty. They frequently contend it falls within a more general concern for personal autonomy. In this liberal egalitarian account, religious liberty claims are often rejected when faced with competing individual interests - the neutral secular state must protect us against the liberty-constraining acts of religions. Joel Harrison challenges this account. He argues that it is rooted in a theologically derived narrative of secularisation: rather than being neutral, it rests on a specific construction of 'secular' and 'religious' spheres. This challenge makes space for an alternative theological, political, and legal vision. Drawing from Christian thought, from St Augustine to John Milbank, Harrison develops a post-liberal focus on association. Religious liberty, he argues, facilitates creating communities seeking solidarity, fraternity, and charity - goals that are central to our common good"--

    Abstract: An enduring theme of Western philosophy is that we are all one another's equals. Yet the principle of basic equality is woefully under-explored in modern moral and political philosophy. In a major new work, Jeremy Waldron attempts to remedy that shortfall with a subtle and multifaceted account of the basis for the West's commitment to human equality. What does it mean to say we are all one another's equals? Is this supposed to distinguish humans from other animals? What is human equality based on? Is it a religious idea, or a matter of human rights? Is there some essential feature that all human beings have in common? Waldron argues that there is no single characteristic that serves as the basis of equality. He says the case for moral equality rests on four capacities that all humans have the potential to possess in some degree: reason, autonomy, moral agency, and ability to love. But how should we regard the differences that people display on these various dimensions? And what are we to say about those who suffer from profound disability--people whose claim to humanity seems to outstrip any particular capacities they have along these lines? Waldron, who has worked on the nature of equality for many years, confronts these questions and others fully and unflinchingly. Based on the Gifford Lectures he delivered at the University of Edinburgh in 2015, One Another's Equals takes Waldron's thinking further and deeper than ever before.--

    Abstract: "Human rights and inclusion are the leading legal paradigms of our time and are considered to be the cornerstone of democracy. In legal discourses on rights, freedom of religion occupies a pivotal position, receiving increasing attention from legal bodies. This book critically evaluates the emerging legal principles and standards that are applied to religious freedom in Europe. Focusing on religious pluralism as an interpretational principle stemming from attempts to define the boundaries of freedom of religion, it examines the expansion of religious pluralism as an underlying principle of different rights regimes and constitutional traditions. It is, however, the static and liberal shape this principle has assumed that is taken up critically here: in order to address how difference is vulnerable to elimination rather than recognition; and through the lens of a contemporary ethics of alterity to reconstruct the possibility of a true religious pluralism

    Abstract: "One of the most vexing problems in the theory and practice of politics is the issue of difference. How do we build a just and stable polity in the face of identity differences that have historically been the basis for inequality, injustice, and violence? Such differences can take a variety of forms, including religious difference, race and ethnicity, language difference, urban/rural tensions, and gender. In many countries, divisions such as these are the fault lines that threaten the stability of the social and legal order. This book addresses the role of constitutions and constitutionalism in dealing with the challenge of difference. In the spring of 2011, a conference held at Indiana University brought together a distinguished group of lawyers, political scientists, historians, religious studies scholars, and area studies experts to consider how constitutions and constitutionalism address issues of difference across a wide swath of the world we called "Pan-Asia." Pan-Asia runs from the Middle East, through Central Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, East Asia, and into Oceania. This is a meta-region across which ideas and influences have traveled for centuries. It is also an area of the world that includes every type of difference in abundant supply. Pan-Asia, therefore, provides a wonderful laboratory for examining the role of constitutions in addressing difference. The existing literatures, while rich in other ways, do not speak directly to this issue of constitutions as a mechanism for addressing difference. In the first part of the volume, leading scholars analyse and develop a range of theoretical perspectives, including constitutions as coordination devices, mission statements, contracts, products of domestic power play, transnational documents, and as reflection of the will of the people. In the second part of the volume, these theories are examined through in-depth case studies of the social and political foundations of constitutions in countries such as Egypt, Nigeria, Japan, Romania, Bulgaria, New Zealand, Israel, Argentina, and others. The result is a multidimensional study of constitutions as social phenomena and their interaction with other social phenomena. The approach combines social science analysis of the nature of constitutions with case studies of selected constitutions"--

    Abstract: Die Außengrenzen sind zu einem umkämpften Raum der EU-Politik zwischen Grenzkontrollen und Flüchtlingsrechten geworden. Silja Klepp stellt diese Aushandlungskämpfe in einer Ethnographie der Seegrenze dar. Forschungsreisen entlang der Küsten von Libyen, Italien und Malta verbinden sich zu einem einzigartig dichten Blick auf die Zwänge und Handlungslogiken der Akteure im Grenzraum. Auf der Spur der Flüchtlinge von Süden nach Norden werden die Lage der Migrantinnen in Libyen, die Grenzschutzagentur Frontex und die Verhältnisse auf See sowie schließlich Haftzentren und andere Grenzeinrichtungen in den Ankunftsorten Malta und Süditalien illustriert und auf die europäische Politik rückbezogen. Eine intensive Perspektive auf einen umstrittenen Teil der europäischen Außenpolitik.
