But was this influx of migration new to Germany? In this volume, Jan Plamper charts the groups and waves of post-1945 mobility to Germany. This is a narrative history of multicultural Germany told through life-stories. It explores the experiences of the 12.5 million German expellees from Eastern Europe who arrived at the end of the Second World War; the 14 million 'guest workers' from Italy and Turkey who turned West Germany into an economic powerhouse; the GDR's Vietnamese labor migrants; and the 2.3 million Germans and 230,000 Jews who came from the Soviet Union after 1987.

    Abstract: This volume brings together investigations from social scientists, philosophers, and legal scholars into the political dimensions of expertise.     Abstract: What makes some multiethnic states integrate and others descend into civil war? Ishiyama and Breuning extend traditional explanations centered on socioeconomic, cultural, and historical factors to argue that the actions of leaders of ethnic segments-too often ignored-are also critical determinants of policy outcomes. Applying a framework derived from comparative politics and IR theory, the authors explore two sets of empirical cases: the emergence of new nationalisms in old European democracies (the United Kingdom and Belgium) and the reemergence of old nationalisms in several new democracies (Bulgaria, Slovakia, Estonia, and Latvia). Their work sheds crucially important light on an issue that is one of the most prominent in world politics today

    Abstract: "This book looks at Salafi influencers and foreign fighters to examine how the origins and dynamics of radical milieus are related to the legacy of the Bosnian War and the Kosovo War. The work seeks to understand if and in what ways these wars influenced the consolidation of radical milieus and whether they impacted the recruitment of foreign fighters. In doing so, the book traces the path of more than 400 individuals that either traveled to Syria or were involved in recruitment locally. Employing a qualitative methodological approach, the book argues that radical influencers are likely to be more evident in postwar societies due to state and societal fragility, which create more power for social actors and constrain efforts to counter extremism. Through the activism of social actors emerging from wars, preceding conflicts resonate through society across different locations and particular postwar radical milieus do not need to be only in the place where war atrocities happened. Thus, radical milieus can spread to various locations including countries hosting postwar diaspora communities. This book will be of much interest to students of radicalisation, terrorism and political violence, Balkan politics, Middle Eastern politics, and IR in general"--

    Abstract: While the nation-state gave rise to the advent of museums, its influence in times of transculturality and post-/decolonial studies appears to have vanished. But is this really the case? With case studies from various geo- and sociopolitical contexts from around the globe, the contributors investigate which roles the nation-state continues to play in museums, collections, and heritage. They answer the question to which degree the nation-state still determines practices of collection and circulation and its amount of power to shape contemporary narratives.     Abstract: Der Kampf gegen die Emanzipation von Frauen und sexuellen Minderheiten ist fester Bestandteil extrem rechter Weltanschauungen. Die Vorstellung, der "westliche" Mann werde unterdrückt und müsse sich gegen eine "Verweiblichung" zur Wehr setzen, eint große Teile des rechten Milieus. Tobias Ginsburg hat sich undercover in diese Welt überhöhter Männlichkeit begeben und traf auf selbsternannte Männerrechtler, Burschenschaftler, Nazi-Rapper, US-amerikanische "Proud Boys" und in Polen auf ein einflussreiches Institut rechts-religiöser Fundamentalisten, deren Netzwerk von den USA bis nach Russland reicht. Mit seiner Recherche gibt er einen Einblick in die verschiedenen Verflechtungen antifeministischer und rechter Ideologien und beschreibt einzelne Radikalisierungsbiografien. Mit seinen Beobachtungen macht er auch auf Strategien der Rekrutierung und Vernetzung sowie das in der Szene vorhandene Gewaltpotenzial aufmerksam.

    Abstract: Klappentext: We are witnessing a worldwide resurgence of reactionary nationalist, religious, racist, and antifeminist ideologies and movements, as well as a rapid process of global de-democratization. Nevertheless, most studies remain tied to a methodological nationalism, while comparative research is almost exclusively limited to European countries and the USA. But authoritarian transformations in the Global South and the struggles against them have not only been at least as dramatic as in the North, they also often date back longer - and have been studied and theorized by Southern scholars for many years. Twenty scholar-activists from the Global South show in their in-depth studies how national processes of authoritarian capitalism have undermined political systems on a global scale.

    Abstract: "Black Neo-Victoriana is the first book-length study on contemporary re-imaginations of Blackness in the long nineteenth century. Located at the intersections of postcolonial studies, Black studies, and neo-Victorian criticism, this interdisciplinary collection engages with the global trend to reimagine and rewrite Black Victorian subjectivities that have been continually marginalised in both historical and cultural discourses. Contributions cover a range of media, from novels and drama to film, television and material culture, and draw upon cultural formations such as Black fandom, Black dandyism, or steamfunk. The book evidences how neo-Victorian studies benefits from reading re-imaginations of the long nineteenth century vis-à-vis Black epistemologies, which unhinge neo-Victorianism's dominant spatial and temporal axes and reroute them to conceive of the (neo-)Victorian through Blackness"

    Abstract: Der Sammelband stellt die Frage nach den Erscheinungsformen und Ausdrucksweisen des Antisemitismus in der Musik. Als „negative Leitidee der Moderne“ ist Antisemitismus in sämtlichen Musikrichtungen zu finden und wird auf unterschiedlichen Ebenen vermittelt: sei es durch Songtexte, Albumcover, Musikvideos, Bühnenauftritte, durch die Musikform bzw. des Stils an sich oder die ideologische und strukturelle Einbindung von Musiker:innen in die extrem rechte Szene bis hin zur Beeinflussung ganzer Musikszenen durch die antisemitische BDS-Kampagne. In den Aufsätzen geben die Autor:innen daher einen Überblick zu aktuellen Entwicklungen und liefern Analysen und Einschätzungen zu den mannigfaltigen antisemitischen Verstrickungen in der Musik. Mit Beiträgen von Lukas Geck, Maria Kanitz, Annica Peter, Jan Schäfer, Jakob Baier, Kai E.     Abstract: This anthology addresses the question of how anti-Semitism appears and is expressed in modern music. As a ‘negative guiding idea of modernity’, anti-Semitism can be found in all musical genres and is conveyed on different levels, be it through song lyrics, album covers, music videos, stage performances, through the musical form or style itself, or the ideological and structural integration of musicians into the extreme rightwing scene, all the way to the influence of entire music scenes through the anti-Semitic BDS campaign. In the essays in this book, the authors therefore give an overview of current develop-ments and provide analyses and assessments of the manifold anti-Semitic manifestations in music. The concept of genocide has proved its worth, but that expansion has also compounded the tensions between a rigid legal concept and the manifold realities researchers have discovered. The author brings to the fore unheard voices and unexplored narratives, especially those relating the experience of different groups of Muslims in the midst of the falling apart of the unified Muslim identity.
