This book examines how people use linguistic strategies such as repeating or paraphrasing others' words with multimodal resources like emojis and GIFs in online discussion boards focused on weight loss support to create intertextuality - or connections between texts, interactions, and other creations that facilitate meaning-making. These strategies allow posters to engage in metadiscourse, or communication about language and communication. By applying the perspective of metadiscourse in a study of intertextuality, Gordon offers important new insights into why intertextuality occurs and what it accomplishes: it helps people manage the challenges of communication.

    Abstract: The analysis and understanding of multilingualism, and its relationship to identity in the face of globalization, migration and the increasing dominance of English as a lingua franca, makes it a complex and challenging problem that requires insights from a range of disciplines. With reference to a variety of languages and contexts, this book offers fascinating insights into multilingual identity from a team of world-renowned scholars, working from a range of different theoretical and methodological perspectives. Three overarching themes are explored - situatedness, identity practices, and investment - and detailed case studies from different linguistic and cultural contexts are included throughout. The chapter authors' consideration of 'multilingualism-as-resource' challenges the conception of 'multilingualism-as-problem', which has dogged so much political thinking in late modernity. The studies offer a critical lens on the types of linguistic repertoire that are celebrated and valued, and introduce the policy implications of their findings for education and wider social issues

    Abstract: "This book uses the mythological hero Heracles as a lens for investigating the nature of heroic violence in archaic and classical Greek literature, from Homer through to Aristophanes. Heracles was famous for his great victories as much as for his notorious failures. Driving each of these acts is his heroic violence, an ambivalent force that can offer communal protection as well as cause grievous harm. Drawing on evidence from epic, lyric poetry, tragedy, and comedy, this work illuminates the strategies used to justify, constrain, and deflate the threatening aspects of violence. The mixed results of these strategies also demonstrate how the figure of Heracles inherently - and stubbornly - resists reform. The diverse character of Heracles' violent acts reveals an enduring tension in understanding violence: is violence a negative individual trait, that is to say, the manifestation of an internal state of hostility? Or is it one specific means to a preconceived end, rather like an instrument whose employment may or may not be justified? Katherine Lu Hsu explores these evolving attitudes towards individual violence in the ancient Greek world while also shedding light on timeless debates about the nature of violence itself"--

    Abstract: The Anthropocene is a concept which challenges the foundations of humanities scholarship as it is traditionally understood.     Abstract: "Applying critical kinship studies to the study of multilingual families, this book foregrounds kinship, gender, and sexuality in discussions of family language ideologies, practices, and planning and affords a new point of view on family language processes. It demonstrates how bringing together family discourse, family language socialization, and family language policy approaches to focus on the social construction of family provides insight into multilingual experiences in the family, children's language development, and societal level language maintenance and shift. Focusing on historically marginalized families in multilingual family research (i.e. adoptive, single parent, and LGBTQ+), this book centers nonnormative family configurations as a way to focus on kinship processes (located in, for example, the use of kinship terms, explicit talk about family, and routine family interactions) where family members "do" kinship. The volume explores the construction of family in private and public spheres including interview and interactional data in homes as well as public forms of production such as memoirs, documentaries, and even comedy. Ranging from discussions of how single and adoptive parents talk about and to their children and the use of Russian on a mother-daughter walk-to-school routine to the Trump family's invisible multilingualism and African American lesbian comedian Wanda Sykes's jokes about her family's exclusionary use of French, this book explores how bi- and multilingualism play a role in family construction."

    Abstract: Although many of its stories originated centuries ago in the Middle East, the 1001 Nights is regarded as a classic of world literature by virtue of the seminal French and English translations produced in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Supporting the suspicion that the story collection is more Parisian than Persian, some of its most famous tales, including the stories of Aladdin and Ali Baba, appear nowhere in the original sources. Yet as befits a world where magic lamps may conceal a jinni and fabulous treasures lie just beyond secret doors, the truth of the Nights is richer than standard criticism suggests. Marvellous Thieves recovers the cross-cultural encounters--the collaborations, borrowings, and acts of literary larceny--that produced the 1001 Nights in European languages. Ranging from the coffeehouses of Aleppo to the salons of Paris, from colonial Calcutta to Bohemian London, Paulo Lemos Horta introduces readers to the poets and scholars, pilgrims and charlatans who made crucial but largely unacknowledged contributions to this most famous of story collections. Each version of the Nights betrays the distinctive cultural milieu in which it was produced and the workshop atmosphere of its compilation. Time and again, Horta shows, stories were retold and elaborate commentaries added to remake the Nights in accordance with the personalities and ambitions of the storytellers and writers. Untangling the intricate web of invention and plagiarism that ensnares the Nights, Horta rehabilitates the voices hidden in its long history--voices that mirror the endless potential of Shahrazad's stories to proliferate.--

    Abstract: Differences That Matter challenges existing ways of theorising the relationship between feminism and postmodernism which ask 'is or should feminism be modern or postmodern?' Sara Ahmed suggests that postmodernism has been allowed to dictate feminist debates and calls instead for feminist theorists to speak (back) to postmodernism, rather than simply speak on (their relationship to) it.     Abstract: Main description: Anhand einer umfangreichen Sammlung englisch- und deutschsprachiger Beispiele werden Mißverständnisse empirisch untersucht. Die Grundlage bildet ein auf der Sprechakttheorie aufbauendes Kommunikationsmodell. Es ermöglicht eine Ursachenanalyse von Mißverständnissen ebenso wie eine Typologie auf Grund verschiedener Aspekte der Äußerungsfunktion, die vom Mißverstehen betroffen sind. Überlegungen anhand benachbarter interaktiver Phänomene wie unbemerktem Mißverstehen und Nichtverstehen führen darüber hinaus zu dem Ergebnis, daß vollständiges Verstehen eher ein soziales Konstrukt als eine interaktive Realität darstellt.
    Abstract: Main description: In this book misunderstandings are analyzed using a pragmatically-oriented modell of communication. The empirical basis is a large corpus of examples from English and German. The theoretical approach makes it possible in many instances to identify the reason why a misunderstanding occurs. A three-level concept of communicative functions, making use of some fundamental concepts of speech act theory, leads to a classification of three major types of misunderstandings. An investigation into the relationship between misunderstandings and phenomena such as nonunderstanding and unnoticed misunderstandings leads to the conclusion that 'total' understanding must be regarded as a social construct rather than as interactive reality.

    Abstract: In this book Jonathan Hall seeks to demonstrate that the ethnic groups of ancient Greece, like many ethnic groups throughout the world today, were not ultimately racial, linguistic, religious or cultural groups, but social groups whose 'origins' in extraneous territories were just as often imagined as they were real. Adopting an explicitly anthropological point of view, he examines the evidence of literature, archaeology and linguistics to elucidate the nature of ethnic identity in ancient Greece. Rather than treating Greek ethnic groups as 'natural' or 'essential' - let alone 'racial' - entities, he emphasises the active, constructive and dynamic role of ethnography, genealogy, material culture and language in shaping ethnic consciousness. An introductory chapter outlines the history of the study of ethnicity in Greek antiquity

Auf dieserGrundlage werden konkrete Prozesse der Textproduktion hinsichtlich ihrerrealzeitlichen Verläufe sowie der auftretenden Planungs-, Formulierungs-und Revisionsaktivitäten genauer analysiert. Die Studie kommt zu demErgebnis, daß die bisher vorliegenden und weitgehend dem kognitivenParadigma verpflichteten Einsichten in die Natur des Schreibprozesses inwesentlichen Teilen ergänzt oder modifiziert werden müssen.
    Abstract: Main description: This study proceeds from the working assumption that writing may plausibly be regarded as a form of complex linguistic action. On this basis concrete processes characteristic of text production are subjected to closer analysis with regard to their real-time extension and the planning, wording and revision activities they involve. The conclusion arrived at is that, with their almost total allegiance to the cognitive paradigm, existing insights on the nature of the writing process need to be substantially extended or modified.
