    Abstract: This book establishes, and then analyses, the interrelation between series and dependence by focusing on two aspects of their connection: the overconsumption of TV series, and the production devices that lead to it. Due to its two-sided nature, the volume brings together specialists from different backgrounds. On the one hand, it involves people working with addiction, such as psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers, whose analytical tools and statistics are extremely useful in assessing the prevalence of TV series addiction, as well as its consequences, in order to make sense of its mechanics. For similar reasons, the authors also include professionals working with children and teenagers, since youths under 18 are largely affected by addictive tendencies. On the other hand, other contributions here are authored by TV series specialists, producers and scriptwriters, as well as academics in the fields of film and TV series studies, cultural studies, and narratology. Their specific perspectives on the topic help better understand what it is about the construction or reception of TV series that aims to create, maintain, amplify, or, on the contrary, curb their ingrained addictive effects.

    Abstract: The debate surrounding the transformation of work at the hands of digital technology and the anxieties brought forth by automation, the sharing economy, and the exploitation of leisure We have been told that digital technology is now threatening the workplace as we know it, that advances in computing and robotics will soon make human labor obsolete, that the sharing economy, exemplified by Uber and Airbnb, will degrade the few jobs that remain, and that the boundaries between work and play are collapsing as Facebook and Instagram infiltrate our free time.In this timely critique, Greg Goldberg examines the fear that work is being eviscerated by digital technology. He argues that it is not actually the degradation or disappearance of work that is so troubling, but rather the underlying notion that society itself is under attack, and more specifically the bonds of responsibility on which social relations depend. Rather than rushing to the defense of the social, however, Goldberg instead imagines the appeal of refusing the hard work of being a responsible and productive member of society.

Um die sozialen Verhältnisse von Ästhetiken, Ökonomien und Generationenbeziehungen in den Blick zu nehmen, versammelt dieser interdisziplinäre Band Forschungsperspektiven zu Alltagsästhetiken in Kindheit und Jugend.

    Abstract: Introduces key ideas and offers a sense of the new frontiers and questions in the emerging field of disability media studies Disability Media Studies articulates the formation of a new field of study, based in the rich traditions of media, cultural, and disability studies. Necessarily interdisciplinary and diverse, this collection weaves together work from scholars from a variety of disciplinary homes, into a broader conversation about exploring media artifacts in relation to disability. The book provides a comprehensive overview for anyone interested in the study of disability and media today. Case studies include familiar contemporary examples—such as Iron Man 3, Lady Gaga, and Oscar Pistorius—as well as historical media, independent disability media, reality television, and media technologies. The contributors consider disability representation, the role of media in forming cultural assumptions about ability, the construction of disability via media technologies, and how disabled audiences respond to particular media artifacts. The volume concludes with afterwords from two different perspectives on the field—one by disability scholar Rachel Adams, the other by media scholars Mara Mills and Jonathan Sterne—that reflect upon the collection, the ongoing conversations, and the future of disability media studies. Disability Media Studies is a crucial text for those interested in this flourishing field, and will pave the way for a greater understanding of disability media studies and its critical concepts and conversations

    Abstract: Gaming Representation' offers a timely and interdisciplinary call for greater inclusivity in video games. The issue of equality transcends the current focus in the field of Game Studies on code, materiality, and platforms. Journalists and bloggers have begun to hold the digital game industry and culture accountable for the discrimination routinely endured by female gamers, queer gamers, and gamers of color. Video game developers are responding to these critiques, but scholarly discussion of representation in games has lagged behind. Contributors to this volume examine portrayals of race, gender, and sexuality in a range of games, from casuals like Diner Dash, to indies like Journey and The Binding of Isaac, to mainstream games from the Grand Theft Auto, BioShock, Spec Ops, The Last of Us, and Max Payne franchises. Arguing that representation and identity function as systems in games that share a stronger connection to code and platforms than it may first appear, 'Gaming Representation' pushes gaming scholarship to new levels of inquiry, theorizing, and imagination

In this highly approachable volume, the authors provide a robust framework for addressing cultural conflicts within organizations not just for practitioners in the field of consulting and organizational psychology, but for a broad spectrum of professionals, executives, and community leaders.     Abstract: Visual Framing hat sich in den letzten Jahren zu einem lebhaften Forschungsfeld der Visuellen Kommunikationsforschung entwickelt. Die vorliegende Publikation gibt einen aktuellen Überblick über gegenwärtige Forschungsströmungen aus theoretischer und empirischer Perspektive. Visual Framing wird dabei als ein mehrstufiger Prozess verstanden, in dem bestimmte Bilder oder Bildaspekte zu einem Thema ausgewählt, andere hingegen vernachlässigt werden, was den Rezipierenden eine bestimmte Bedeutung oder Interpretation implizieren kann. Neben Fragen der Produktion, Selektion und Konstruktion visueller Medienframes widmen sich die Beiträge daher auch gezielt den Wirkungspotenzialen von Visual Framing. Aus theoretischer und methodischer Perspektive werden Konzepte und Ansätze zur Analyse von Visual Frames und Visual Framing diskutiert. Die Autorinnen und Autoren setzen dazu einen theoretischen Rahmen und reflektieren die zusammengetragenen Befunde aus einer interdisziplinären, originären Perspektive der Visuellen Kommunikationsforschung - nicht zuletzt um auszuloten, welche theoretischen, methodischen und empirischen Herausforderungen zukünftig für die Visuelle Kommunikationsforschung bestehen.   Biographische Informationen Stephanie Geise, Dr., ist seit 2010 Akademische Rätin und Habilitandin an der Universität Erfurt am Seminar für Empirische Kommunikationsforschung und Methoden.     Abstract: Susan Leigh Star (1954-2010) was one of the most influential science studies scholars of the last several decades. In her work, Star highlighted the messy practices of discovering science, asking hard questions about the marginalizing as well as the liberating powers of science and technology. In the landmark work Sorting Things Out, Star and Geoffrey Bowker revealed the social and ethical histories that are deeply embedded in classification systems. Star's most celebrated concept was the notion of boundary objects: representational forms - things or theories - that can be shared between different communities, with each holding its own understanding of the representation. Unfortunately, Leigh was unable to complete a work on the poetics of infrastructure that further developed the full range of her work. This volume collects articles by Star that set out some of her thinking on boundary objects, marginality, and infrastructure, together with essays by friends and colleagues from a range of disciplines - from philosophy of science to organization science - that testify to the wide-ranging influence of Star's work.     Abstract: Our encounters with websites, avatars, videos, mobile apps, discussion forums, GIFs, and nonhuman intelligent agents allow us to experience sensations of connectivity, interest, desire, and attachment -- as well as detachment, boredom, fear, and shame. Some affective online encounters may arouse complex, contradictory feelings that resist dualistic distinctions. In this book, leading scholars examine the fluctuating and altering dynamics of affect that give shape to online connections and disconnections. Doing so, they tie issues of circulation and connectivity to theorizations of networked affect. Their diverse investigations -- considering subjects that range from online sexual dynamics to the liveliness of computer code -- demonstrate the value of affect theories for Internet studies. The contributors investigate networked affect in terms of intensity, sensation, and value. They explore online intensities that range from Tumblr practices in LGBTQ communities to visceral reactions to animated avatars; examine the affective materiality of software in such platforms as steampunk culture and nonprofit altporn; and analyze the ascription of value to online activities including the GTD ("getting things done") movement and the accumulation of personal digital materials.     Abstract: »Entwicklung« wird unter den Bedingungen der globalisierten Wissensgesellschaft unweigerlich zu einem reflexiven kommunikativen Prozess. Nachdem man erkennen musste, dass es keinen Königsweg hin zu nachhaltiger Entwicklung gibt, werden neue Wege der Zusammenarbeit beschritten, bei denen globales und lokales Wissen in eine fruchtbare Beziehung zueinander gebracht werden. Für die hier tätigen Experten bedeutet dies, dass sie in erster Linie als Berater, Vermittler und Übersetzer agieren.Der Band portraitiert die Entwicklungszusammenarbeit anhand vieler Beispiele aus der Praxis (Politikberatung, Demokratieförderung, good governance, Umweltprojekte u.a.) als einen Bereich, in dem ständig neues global-lokal verankertes Weltwissen produziert und kommuniziert wird

    Abstract: Online comment can be informative or misleading, entertaining or maddening. Haters and manipulators often seem to monopolize the conversation. Some comments are off-topic, or even topic-less. In this book, Joseph Reagle urges us to read the comments. Conversations "on the bottom half of the Internet," he argues, can tell us much about human nature and social behavior.Reagle visits communities of Amazon reviewers, fan fiction authors, online learners, scammers, freethinkers, and mean kids. He shows how comment can inform us (through reviews), improve us (through feedback), manipulate us (through fakery), alienate us (through hate), shape us (through social comparison), and perplex us. He finds pre-Internet historical antecedents of online comment in Michelin stars, professional criticism, and the wisdom of crowds. He discusses the techniques of online fakery (distinguishing makers, fakers, and takers), describes the emotional work of receiving and giving feedback, and examines the culture of trolls and haters, bullying, and misogyny. He considers the way comment -- a nonstop stream of social quantification and ranking -- affects our self-esteem and well-being. And he examines how comment is puzzling -- short and asynchronous, these messages can be slap-dash, confusing, amusing, revealing, and weird, shedding context in their passage through the Internet, prompting readers to comment in turn, "WTF?!?"

Nanna Heidenreich sets the history-making power of film and the art of migration against the apparent ahistoricity with which migration in Germany is addressed. She illustrates how the juridical category of »foreigner« is indeed as stubborn as it is socially misunderstood, yet how the cinema enacts not just the recognition (and failed recognition) services of this German immigration discourse - it portrays other negotiations of history and stories, genealogies and gender, iconoclastic controversies, transparency and veil, secularization, blood, sex, and skin.
