    Abstract: Creativity has become part of the language of regeneration experts, urban planners and government policy makers attempting to revive the economic and cultural life of cities in the 21st century. Concepts such as the creative class, the creative industries and bohemian cultural clusters have come to dominate thinking about how creativity can contribute to urban renewal. Spaces of Vernacular Creativity offers a critical perspective on the instrumental use of arts and creative practices for the purposes of urban regeneration or civic boosterism. Several important contributions are brought into one volume to examine the geography of locally embedded forms of arts and creative practice. There has been an explosion of interest in both academic and policy circles in the notion of creativity, and its role in economic development and urban regeneration. This book argues for a rethinking of what constitutes creativity, foregrounding non-economic values and practices, and the often marginal and everyday spaces in which creativity takes shape. Drawing on a range of geographic contexts including the U.S., Europe, Canada and Australia, the book explores a diverse array of creative practices ranging from art, music, and design to community gardening and anticapitalist resistance. The book examines working class, ethnic and non-elite forms of creativity, and a variety of creative spaces, including rural areas, suburbs and abandoned areas of the city. The authors argue for a broader and more inclusive conception of what constitutes creative practice, advocating for an approach that foregrounds economies of generosity, conviviality and activism. The book also explores the complexities and nuances that connect the local and the global and finally, the book provides a space for valuing alternative, marginal and displaced knowledges.     Abstract: Reisen zu indigenen Kulturen sind wegen deren angeblichen Verletzlichkeit verpönt. Diese Berechtigung dieser Ansicht wird am Beispiel von Tourismus zu Tuareg-Nomaden in der Region Agadez, Zentralsahara, überprüft. Dazu wurden die historischen, politischen, ökonomischen und kulturellen Rahmenbedingungen und Entwicklungsprozesse der Region sowie auch jene des Bergdorfes Timia in den Aïr-Bergen untersucht. Besonderes Augenmerk galt den Strukturen der regionalen Tourismusentwicklung, wozu regionale Agenturbetreiber, Sahara-Touristen sowie Angehörige der betroffenen Landbevölkerung interviewt wurden. Weiters wurden die Kataloge von europäischen Reiseveranstaltern analysiert. Schließlich wurde auch eine Trekking-Reise mittels teilnehmender Beobachtung evaluiert, wobei keine wesentlichen soziokulturellen und ökologischen Belastungen nachweisbar waren. Als Evaluationsmaßstab wurde das System einer kybernetischen Ethik entwickelt, die sich als personelle Ausprägung der "nachhaltigen Entwicklung" versteht. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt war die ideologiekritische Analyse des Tuareg-Mythos."Tuareg-Tourismus" wird überwiegend von urbanisierten Tuareg-Nomaden und einstigen Tuareg-Rebellen betrieben. Charakteristisch sind das weitgehend ungelenkte Tourismuswachstum, intensives Konkurrenzverhalten der Reiseveranstalter und geringe interkulturelle Qualifikation des Personals. Die Region leidet unter Arbeitslosigkeit und Dürren, weshalb die ökonomische Rolle des Tourismus signifikant ist. Jedoch trägt diese Einkommenschance auch zu inneren Konflikten bei. Insofern weist Tourismus sowohl stabilisierende als auch destabilisierende Tendenzen auf. Die Belastungen des gesamten Tourismusaufkommens, maximal 4.000 Personen pro Jahr, halten sich aufgrund des großen Reisegebiets in Grenzen.     Abstract: Einkommensalternative sowie als Mittel zur Requirierung von Entwicklungsprojekten betrachtet wird. Dieser Sichtweise wurde abschließend vor dem Hinterrund der Transzendentalpragmatik und des Kulturalismus auf deren Legitimationskraft analysiert. Im Ergebnis konnte die spezifische Form des Tuareg-Tourismus als vertretbar nachgewiesen werden, weil in seiner gegenwärtigen Form die stabilisierenden Effekte dominieren.     Abstract: Abstract: "In Deutschland werden das niedrige Geburtenniveau, die steigende Lebenserwartung und Effekte der gegebenen Altersstruktur Prozesse der Schrumpfung und Alterung der Bevölkerung verstärken. In Zukunft ist daher mit einem weiter zunehmenden Einfluss von Wanderungsbewegungen auf die Bevölkerungsentwicklung zu rechnen. Unsicher ist jedoch, wie sich die künftige Zuwanderung entwickeln wird. Vor diesem Hintergrund beschäftigen sich die Ausführungen mit dem bisherigen Einfluss und den zukünftigen Wirkungen der Migration auf die Bevölkerungsentwicklung. Hierbei wird das Wanderungsgeschehen auf nationaler, europäischer und globaler Ebene dargestellt, wobei Deutschland besondere Aufmerksamkeit zuteil wird. Diskutiert wird zudem die Frage, wie die künftige Wanderungsentwicklung nach Deutschland einzuschätzen ist. Or Laura, who identifies as Catholic but rarely attends Mass, and engages daily in Buddhist-style meditation at her home altar arranged with symbols of Mexican American popular religion? Diverse religious practices such as these have long baffled scholars, whose research often starts with the assumption that individuals commit, or refuse to commit, to an entire institutionally framed package of beliefs and practices. Meredith McGuire points the way forward toward a new way of understanding religion. She argues that scholars must study religion not as it is defined by religious organizations, but as it is actually lived in people's everyday lives. Drawing on her own extensive fieldwork, as well as recent work by others, McGuire explores the many, seemingly mundane, ways that individuals practice their religions and develop their spiritual lives. By examining the many eclectic and creative practices -- of body, mind, emotion, and spirit -- that have been invisible to researchers, she offers a fuller and more nuanced understanding of contemporary religion.

    Abstract: In recent years geographers interested in ethnicity, 'race' and racism have extended their focus from examining geographies of segregation and racism to exploring cultural politics, social practice and everyday geographies of identity and experience.     Abstract: Where does the nation-state end and globalization begin? In Territory, Authority, Rights, one of the world's leading authorities on globalization shows how the national state made today's global era possible. Saskia Sassen argues that even while globalization is best understood as "denationalization," it continues to be shaped, channeled, and enabled by institutions and networks originally developed with nations in mind, such as the rule of law and respect for private authority. This process of state making produced some of the capabilities enabling the global era. The difference is that these capabilities have become part of new organizing logics: actors other than nation-states deploy them for new purposes. Sassen builds her case by examining how three components of any society in any age--territory, authority, and rights--have changed in themselves and in their interrelationships across three major historical "assemblages": the medieval, the national, and the global. The book consists of three parts. The first, "Assembling the National," traces the emergence of territoriality in the Middle Ages and considers monarchical divinity as a precursor to sovereign secular authority. The second part, "Disassembling the National," analyzes economic, legal, technological, and political conditions and projects that are shaping new organizing logics. The third part, "Assemblages of a Global Digital Age," examines particular intersections of the new digital technologies with territory, authority, and rights. Sweeping in scope, rich in detail, and highly readable, Territory, Authority, Rights is a definitive new statement on globalization that will resonate throughout the social sciences.

    Abstract: Die These von der doppelten Benachteiligung ist die grundlegende Annahme in der Literatur über die Auswirkungen der Kontexteffekte armer oder benachteiligter Wohngebiete auf die Bewohner/innen. Diese These wird in einer repräsentativen Befragung deutscher und türkischer Bewohner von Köln-Vingst/Höhenberg untersucht, ergänzt um qualitative Interviews. Zunächst wird die interne Differenzierung des Gebietes untersucht und daran anschließend die Strategien der Alltagsbewältigung der deutschen und türkischen Bewohner/innen sowie ihre Netzwerke und das soziale Kapital. Zur Verhandlung steht des Weiteren die Frage, in welchem Ausmaß abweichendes Verhalten wahrgenommen wird. Für die einzelnen Verhaltensbereiche werden zahlreiche Hypothesen getestet. Bei den deutschen Befragten kann eine doppelte Benachteiligung nachgewiesen werden. Für die türkischen gilt sie nur eingeschränkt. Die türkischen Bewohner eines benachteiligten Gebietes können offenbar Krisensituationen besser bewältigen.

    Abstract: Die alltägliche Begegnung mit dem Fremden wird oft als eine Quelle der Verunsicherung gesehen - und als eine der Ursachen für Fremdenfeindlichkeit. Was aber, wenn das Gegenteil der Fall ist? Abseits der Diskussionen um Minaretthöhen stellt diese Studie anhand des konkreten Beispiels kleiner migrantengeführter Lebensmittelgeschäfte die Integrationsfrage dort, wo das Zusammenleben mit dem Fremden tagtäglich erprobt wird. Dabei wird von alltagspraktischem Wirtschaftshandeln auf lokaler Ebene ausgegangen und mittels ethnographischer Methoden schrittweise ein praktisches und theoretisches Verständnis der eigentlichen Problematik gewonnen. Diese zeigt sich hier weniger in kultureller Differenz als in der Aushandlung sozialer Rollen vor dem Hintergrund alltäglicher Praktiken des Einkaufs.

In Authentic New Orleans, Kevin Fox Gotham explains how New Orleans became a tourist town, a spectacular locale known as much for its excesses as for its quirky Southern charm. Gotham begins in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina amid the whirlwind of speculation about the rebuilding of the city and the dread of outsiders wiping New Orleans clean of the grit that made it great. He continues with the origins of Carnival and the Mardi Gras celebration in the nineteenth century, showing how, through careful planning and promotion, the city constructed itself as a major tourist attraction. By examining various image-building campaigns and promotional strategies to disseminate a palatable image of New Orleans on a national scale Gotham ultimately establishes New Orleans as one of the originators of the mass tourism industry-which linked leisure to travel, promoted international expositions, and developed the concept of pleasure travel. Gotham shows how New Orleans was able to become one of the most popular tourist attractions in the United States, especially through the transformation of Mardi Gras into a national, even international, event. All the while Gotham is concerned with showing the difference between tourism from above and tourism from below-that is, how New Orleans' distinctiveness is both maximized, some might say exploited, to serve the global economy of tourism as well as how local groups and individuals use tourism to preserve and anchor longstanding communal traditions.

    Abstract: A narration of the mutually mortal historical contest between humans and nature in Latin America. Covering a period that begins with Amerindian civilizations and concludes in the region's present urban agglomerations, the work offers an original synthesis of the current scholarship on Latin America's environmental history and argues that tropical nature played a central role in shaping the region's historical development. Human attitudes, populations, and appetites, from Aztec cannibalism to more contemporary forms of conspicuous consumption, figure prominently in the story. However, characters such as hookworms, whales, hurricanes, bananas, dirt, butterflies, guano, and fungi make more than cameo appearances. Recent scholarship has overturned many of our egocentric assumptions about humanity's role in history. Seeing Latin America's environmental past from the perspective of many centuries illustrates that human civilizations, ancient and modern, have been simultaneously more powerful and more vulnerable than previously thought

    Abstract: 'Natural Resources and Conflict in Africa' is the first book to offer a detailed look at conflict over various natural resources in several African countries. Abiodun Alao undertakes this broad survey by categorizing natural resources into four groups: land (including agricultural practices and animal stock), solid minerals, oil, and water. Themes linking these resources to governance and conflict are then identified and examined with numerous examples drawn from specific African countries. Alao's approach offers considered conclusions based on comparative discussions and analysis, thus providing the first comprehensive account of the linkage between natural resources and political and social conflict in Africa. Abiodun Alao is a Senior Research Fellow at the Conflict, Security, and Development Group, School of Social Science and Public Policy, King's College, University of London.
