    Abstract: A timely exploration of intellectual dogmatism in politics, economics, religion, and literature-and what can be done to fight itPolarization may be pushing democracy to the breaking point. But few have explored the larger, interconnected forces that have set the stage for this crisis: namely, a rise in styles of thought, across a range of fields, that literary scholar Gary Saul Morson and economist Morton Schapiro call "fundamentalist." In Minds Wide Shut, Morson and Schapiro examine how rigid adherence to ideological thinking has altered politics, economics, religion, and literature in ways that are mutually reinforcing and antithetical to the open-mindedness and readiness to compromise that animate democracy. In response, they propose alternatives that would again make serious dialogue possible.Fundamentalist thinking, Morson and Schapiro argue, is not limited to any one camp. It flourishes across the political spectrum, giving rise to dueling monologues of shouting and abuse between those who are certain that they can't be wrong, that truth and justice are all on their side, and that there is nothing to learn from their opponents, who must be evil or deluded. But things don't have to be this way.     Abstract: Sabine Exner-Krikorian untersucht in dieser Studie den Diskurs über die gleichgeschlechtliche Ehe in Deutschland von 1998 bis 2017. Sie geht der Frage nach, wie zeitgenössische religiöse, politische und gesellschaftliche Akteur*innen um die Deutungshoheit von Ehe wetteifern. Im Detail wird gezeigt, dass die Diskursakteur*innen in diesem Aushandlungsprozess die Prämisse einer angenommenen Moderne, die Dichotomie religiös/säkular sowie Narrative von und über Religion(en) als diskursive Strategien einsetzen. Eingebettet ist die Analyse in eine historische Rekonstruktion der Ehe seit der Reformation als Deutungs- und Machtkampf politischer und religiöser Akteur*innen. Mit einem zeit-, akteurs- und arenaspezifischen Ansatz verknüpft die Autorin methodologisch die Wissenssoziologische Diskursanalyse (WDA) nach Reiner Keller mit einem religionswissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisinteresse.

Die Studie liefert wichtige Impulse für die Jugendarbeit islamischer Gemeinden in Deutschland, aber auch für Politik und Bildungsinstitutionen, eingebrannte Bilder des Islams und seiner Gemeinden in Deutschland einer Revision zu unterziehen.

    Abstract: This comparative and multi-level study of state responses is confronted with huge complexity. Almost all existing theoretical and methodological approaches -such as secularism (including multiple secularisms or post-secularism)- do not take these complexities seriously into account, focusing on one concept only (wrong Leitdifferenz). They neglect different meanings of terms for agents in the field and they neglect the importance of different levels of governance, times, issues and minorities. This study, however, highlights minimally necessary complexity without drowning in this complexity. It draws clear conceptual, theoretical and methodological lessons, also in a broader sense for the study of governance of religious and cultural diversity and for the governance of migrations.     Abstract: "Islam through Objects represents the state of the field of Islamic material cultural studies. With contributions from scholars of religion, anthropologists, art historians, folklorists, historians, and other disciplines, Anna Bigelow brings together a wide range of perspectives on Islamic materiality to debunk myths of Islamic aversion to material aspects of religion. Each chapter focuses on a single object in daily use by Muslims - prayer beads, coins, amulets, a cistern well, clothing, jewellery, bodily and domestic adornments - to consider both generic and particular aspects of the object in question. These narratives will engage the reader by describing and analyzing each object in terms of its provenance, materials, uses, and history, as well as the broader history, variety and uses of the object in Islamic history and cultures. Temporal, regional, and sectarian variations in the styles, uses, and theological perspectives are also considered. Framed by an introduction that assesses the various approaches to Islamic material culture in recent scholarship, Islam through Objects provides a template for the study of religion and material culture, which engages current theory, subtle and nuanced narratives, and the creative and imaginal capacities of Muslims through history."

    Abstract: This book takes a global approach to violence between husbands and wives in faith contexts. It focuses primarily on Christians, and uses anthropological, theological and historical methods which intersect with and are challenged by lay and ordained women and men from eighteen countries. Focusing on marital violence, the book explores how to understand how various churches, their priests, preachers and members, approach the topic, interpret the texts, and, with the almost relentless collusion of theologians, hide from the sin. Drawing on ethnographic research over several decades from around the world, Elizabeth Koepping presents testimonies from abused women, as well as theological justification for spousal abuse from the perpetrators. She argues that violence against the (female) spouse can be understood as proper behaviour by manly men towards unruly wives, rather than an insult to the Image of God in all persons. The book shows that spousal abuse is an ecumenical phenomenon, in the sense that is present all over the inhabited world, and it is present in all Christian churches.

    Abstract: What would it mean to imagine Islam as an immanent critique of the West? Sayyid Ahmad Khan lived in a time of great tribulation for Muslim India under British rule. By examining Khan's work as a critical expression of modernity rooted in the Muslim experience of it, Islam as Critique argues that Khan is essential to understanding the problematics of modern Islam and its relationship to the West. The book re-imagines Islam as an interpretive strategy for investigating the modern condition, and as an engaged alternative to mainstream Western thought. Using the life and work of nineteenth-century Indian Muslim polymath Khan (1817-1898), it identifies Muslims as a viable resource for both critical intervention in important ethical debates of our times and as legitimate participants in humanistic discourses that underpin a just global order. Islam as Critique locates Khan within a broader strain in modern Islamic thought that is neither a rejection of the West, nor a wholesale acceptance of it. The author calls this "Critical Islam". By bringing Khan's critical engagement with modernity into conversation with similar critical analyses of the modern by Reinhold Niebuhr, Hannah Arendt, and Alasdair MacIntyre, the author shows how Islam can be read as critique

    Abstract: In this book, Glenn Barenthin provides a new solution to a key question in the cognitive and evolutionary study of religion: why do humans cooperate? What led humans, uniquely among animals, to have large-scale civilizations with unprecedented cooperation? One explanation, propagated by the Big God Proponents (BGP), argues that a moralizing God is the crucial motivator for the pro-social behaviour necessary for large scale civilization. To explore this idea, Barenthin provides a critical assessment of the evidence provided by the BGP, and also discusses the place of God in our moral thinking. However, using evidence from anthropology, history, cognitive science, psychology and game theory, Barenthin presents a new theory: that the evolutionary pressures faced by our forebears paved the way for emerging humans to engage in what he terms 'thin cooperation'. This type of cooperation requires individuals to comprehend the reasons for their actions, and it is often done with others in mind. Finally, Barenthin argues that humans also have the capacity for 'thick cooperation', which is made possible by those fighting for the rights of strangers in an attempt to make the world a fairer place for a greater number of people

Wasserstrom's Religion after Religion (1999) and Between Muslim and Jew (1995), provided a theoretical reorientation for the study of religion away from hierophanies and ultimacy, and toward lived history and deep pluralism.     Abstract: The Routledge Handbook of Minorities in the Middle East gathers a diverse team of international scholars, each of whom provides unique expertise into the status and prospects of minority populations in the region. The dramatic events of the past decade, from the Arab Spring protests to the rise of the Islamic state, have brought the status of these populations onto centre stage. The overturn of various long-term autocratic governments in states such as Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, and Yemen, and the ongoing threat to government stability in Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon have all contributed to a new assertion of majoritarian politics amid demands for democratization and regime change. In the midst of the dramatic changes and latent armed conflict, minority populations have been targeted, marginalized, and victimized. Calls for social and political change have led many to contemplate the ways in which citizenship and governance may be changed to accommodate minorities - or indeed if such change is possible. At a time when the survival of minority populations, and the utility of the label minority has been challenged, this handbook answers the following set of research questions: What are the unique challenges of minority populations in the Middle East? How do minority populations integrate into their host societies, both as a function of their own internal choices, and as a response to majoritarian consensus on their status? Finally, given their inherent challenges, and the vast, sweeping changes that have taken place in the region over the past decade, what is the future of these minority populations? What impact have minority populations had on their societies, and to what extent will they remain prominent actors in their respective settings?

    Abstract: "Through the creation of post-colonial citizenship, India adopted a hybridisation of specific secular and western conception of citizenship. In this democratic framework, Indian Muslims are observed on how they make use of the spaces and channels to accommodate their Islamic identity within a secular one. This book analyses how the socio-political context shapes citizens' perceptions of multiple variables, such as their sense of political efficacy, agency, conception of citizenship rights and belief in democracy. Based on extensive surveys and interviews and through presenting and investigating the various meanings of jihād, the author explores the usage of non-Eurocentric conceptual approaches to the study of postcolonial and Muslim societies, in particular the meaning it carries in the psyche of the Muslim community. She argues that through means of argumentative and spiritual jihād, Indian Muslims fight their battle towards a realisation of citizenship ideals despite the unfavourable conditions of intra and inter community conflicts. Presenting new examinations of Islamic identity and citizenship in contemporary India, this book will be a useful contribution to the study of South Asian Studies, Religion, Islam, and Race and Ethnicity"...Provided by publisher

    Abstract: "Religion, and the history of its study in the modern academy, has affected not only the methodologies, but also the disciplinary and regional arrangements of different Asian Studies fields over the past century. Asian Studies has in turn affected, and is increasingly shaping, the study of religion. Religion and Orientalism in Asian Studies looks into this symbiotic relationship - both in current practice, and in the modern histories of both Orientalism and Area Studies. The chapters of the book are integrated by shared themes that run through the past and present practice of Area studies, covering the role of state actors in originating Asian studies, the role of local scholarship in defining and developing it, and the interaction between humanities and social science approaches. Debates over the dominance of Western and/or modern categories and frameworks, the interaction of past and present and the role of religious actors and religious sensibilities in shaping Asian studies, are also covered. Each chapter deals with one regional sub-discipline in Asian studies and is authored by a leading scholar. Shared thematic approaches running through each essay serve to link scholarly approaches in the fields of Chinese studies, Japanese studies, Korean studies, South Asian studies and South East Asian studies."--

    Abstract: Based on the chance survival of a remarkable cache of documents, India and the Islamic Heartlands recaptures a vanished and forgotten world from the eighteenth century spanning much of today's Middle East and South Asia. Gagan Sood focuses on ordinary people - traders, pilgrims, bankers, clerics, brokers, scribes, among others - who were engaged in activities marked by large distances and long silences.     Abstract: The book challenges the popular notion of a clash of cultures pitting Muslim and non-Muslim Europeans against one another. The study finds instead vehement conflict among three longstanding European public philosophies: liberalism, nationalism, and postmodernism. The consequential differences of outlook are demonstrated in four policy areas: 1) citizenship requirements, 2) the headscarf debate, 3) mosque-state relations and 4) counter-terrorism. The book reaches three important conclusions. First, Muslim Europeans do not represent a monolithic anti-Western bloc -- a Trojan Horse -- within Europe. They vehemently disagree among themselves but along the same basic liberal, nationalist, and postmodern contours as non-Muslim Europeans. Second, ideological discord significantly contributes to policy “messiness,” that is, to inconsistent, contradictory policies. Third, both the discord and the messiness are remarkably similar from one European country to the next, thereby casting doubt on the dominant theory in comparative migration studies that posits distinct national styles such as French republicanism, German ethno-nationalism and British multiculturalism.

    Abstract: "This volume highlights the ways in which the prospect of peace can generate anxieties and consequently set in motion social and political processes that reproduce and reactivate conflicts. In analysing this issue, the volume builds on the notion of ontological security and its recent applications to international relations theory. Although conflicts threaten the physical security of the parties involved, they also help settle existential questions about basic parameters of life, being, and identity, and thus over time become sources of ontological security. The prospect of peace, through the resolution or transformation of conflict, threatens to unsettle the stability and consistency of self-narratives, and their associated routines and habits at the individual, group, and state levels.The contributors argue two key points: 1) that ontological insecurity may set in motion political and social processes that reproduce and reactivate conflicts; 2) that coping with peace anxieties necessitates the formulation of alternative self-narratives at the individual, societal, and state levels that re-situate the Self in relation to Other and to the world at large. Consequently, the book analyses the ways in which, and the conditions under which, conflict resolution induces ontological insecurity, and the different ways in which ontological insecurity has prevented the successful culmination of peace processes in different conflict contexts, including Cyprus, Israel-Palestine and Northern Ireland.     Abstract: The Book of the Order of Chivalry was written in Catalan by Ramon Llull between 1274 and 1276 and is one of the author's earliest works. After his death, it achieved a wide dissemination throughout Europe in part because it was considered the theoretical manual on knighthood par excellence. The book was written in Catalan for knights who might not have a knowledge of Latin. Llull devotes his treatise to the definition of the duties of a perfect knight. In addition, he is interested in delving into the religious and moral aspects of chivalry as well as in trying to reform this institution.This

    Abstract: Rund vier Millionen Muslime leben in Deutschland - zum Teil seit einigen Jahrzehnten. Bisher ist in der deutschen Bevölkerung allerdings noch sehr wenig über die Glaubensvielfalt in dieser Religionsgruppe bekannt. Die Publikation zeigt, wie Angehörige des Islams in Deutschland ihren Glauben verstehen und ihre Religion praktizieren. Die beiden Autoren Dirk Halm und Martina Sauer gehen dabei der Frage nach, welche Wechselwirkungen zwischen muslimischer Religiosität und anderen Wertorientierungen bestehen: Wie wirkt sich Religiosität auf ethisch-moralische sowie politische Sichtweisen aus? Haben fromme Muslime eine andere Vorstellung von einem guten Leben? Ein weiteres Themenfeld ist die Bedeutung von Religion und Religiosität für die Sozialintegration der Muslime. Dabei geht es auch um den Einfluss von Religiosität auf gesellschaftliche Teilhabe und Lebenszufriedenheit. Eine Besonderheit der Untersuchung: Zur besseren Einordnung der Situation in Deutschland stellt sie einen Vergleich mit der Lebens- und Glaubenswelt der Muslime in der Türkei her. Hierbei werden sowohl Ähnlichkeiten als auch Unterschiede deutlich. Anspruch der Studie ist es, mit einem differenzierten Zugang Vorurteilen entgegenzuwirken und den Blick für die gesellschaftliche Bedeutung von Religiosität zu öffnen.
