Wie stehen das Erzählen und das Erleben in der Gegenwart im Zusammenhang mit dem Erleben und dem Erzählen in der Vergangenheit?     Abstract: "Extreme polarization in American politics - and especially in the U.S. Congress - is perhaps the most confounding political phenomenon of our time. This book binds together polarization in Congress and polarization in the electorate within an ever-expanding feedback loop. This loop is powered by the discipline exerted by the respective political parties on their Congressional members and district candidates and maintained by the voters in each Congressional district who must choose between the alternatives offered. These alternatives are just as extreme in competitive as in lop-sided districts. Tight national party discipline produces party delegations in Congress that are each ideologically narrowly distributed but widely separated from one another. As district constituencies become more polarized and are egged on by activists, parties are further motivated to move past a threshold and appeal to their respective bases rather than to voters in the political center. America has indeed acquired parties with clear platforms - once thought to be a desirable goal, but these parties are now feuding camps. What resolution might there be? Just as the progressive movement slowly replaced the Gilded Age, might a new reform effort replace the current squabble? Or could an asymmetry develop in the partisan constraints that would lead to ascendancy of the center, or might a new and over-riding issue generate a cross-cutting dimension, opening the door to a new politics? Only the future will tell"--

    Abstract: In Tamil Nadu, the nine-night autumnal Navarātri festival can be viewed as a celebration of feminine powers in association with the goddess. This book explores Navarātri as it is celebrated in the South Indian temple town of Kanchipuram. It investigates the local mythologies of the goddess, two temple celebrations, and the domestic ritual practice known as kolu (doll displays). The author highlights three intersecting themes: namely the play of the goddess in myth and ritual, the religious agency and images of women and the divine feminine, and notions of playfulness in Navarātri rituals; as articulated in creativity, aesthetics, competition, and dramatic expressions.

    Abstract: "Why do women accumulate less wealth than men? Why do marital separations impoverish women while they do not prevent men from becoming wealthy? This groundbreaking work approaches the institution of family from a materialist point of view, breaking with the dominant theory of modern, economically disinterested family relations. It takes seriously the economists, in the wake of Thomas Piketty, who observe a return to property inequality, based on the legacy of capitalism in the twenty-first century. It reconsiders the effectivity of legal changes that profess formal equality between men and women while condoning inequality in practice"--

    Abstract: Examines the role of the American Revolution in the everyday lives of womenPatriarchal forces of law, finance, and social custom restricted women's rights and agency in revolutionary America. Yet women in this period exploited these confines, transforming constraints into vehicles of female empowerment. Through a close reading of thousands of legislative, judicial, and institutional pleas across seventy years of history in three urban centers, Jacqueline Beatty illustrates the ways in which women in the revolutionary era asserted their status as dependents, demanding the protections owed to them as the assumed subordinates of men. In so doing, they claimed various forms of aid and assistance, won divorce suits, and defended themselves and their female friends in the face of patriarchal assumptions about their powerlessness. Ultimately, women in the revolutionary era were able to advocate for themselves and express a relative degree of power not in spite of their dependent status, but because of it.Their varying degrees of success in using these methods, however, was contingent on their race, class, and socio-economic status, and the degree to which their language and behavior conformed to assumptions of Anglo-American femininity. In Dependence thus exposes the central paradoxes inherent in American women's social, legal, and economic positions of dependence in the Revolutionary era, complicating binary understandings of power and weakness, of agency and impotence, and of independence and dependence. Significantly, the American Revolution provided some women with the language and opportunities in which to claim old rights—the rights of dependents—in new ways. Most importantly, In Dependence shows how women's coming to consciousness as rights-bearing individuals laid the groundwork for the activism and collective petitioning efforts of later generations of American feminists

Crafted by one of the nineteenth century's most prominent voices for social change, 'Against High-Caste Polygamy' demonstrates Vidyasagar's ability to call upon the classical discourse and argumentation of the Sanskrit legal tradition while engaging the norms of modern historical and social criticism. In this work, Vidyasagar utilizes both a kind of 'imaginative sociology' geared at capturing the suffering of Kulin women and a kind of proto-statistical analysis aimed at opening the eyes of readers to the extent and ramifications of polygamous practices that left Hindu women ostracized, neglected, and abused.

    Abstract: This volume aims to revisit, further explore and tease out the textual, but also non-textual sources in an attempt to reconstruct a clearer picture of a particular aspect of sexuality, i.e. sexual practices, in Greco-Roman antiquity. Sexual practices refers to a part of the overarching notion of sexuality: specifically, the acts of sexual intercourse, the erogenous capacities and genital functions of male and female body, and any other physical or biological actions that define one's sexual identity or orientation. This volume aims to approach not simply the acts of sexual intercourse themselves, but also their legal, social, political, religious, medical, cultural/moral and interdisciplinary (e.g. emotional, performative) perspectives, as manifested in a range of both textual and non-textual evidence (i.e. architecture, iconography, epigraphy, etc.). The insights taken from the contributions to this volume would enable researchers across a range of disciplines - e.g. sex/gender studies, comparative literature, psychology and cognitive neuroscience - to use theoretical perspectives, methodologies and conceptual tools to frame the sprawling examination of aspects of sexuality in broad terms, or sexual practices in particular

    Abstract: There is an intimate relationship between clothes and identity. Clothes express our ideas, values and social norms to others. Therefore, dresses can be utilized to explore and explain the identity transformation from an older to a newer socio-cultural context. This dissertation reads the shifts in Egyptian Muslim women's attitude towards modern dress and clothing style and their entanglement with gender, nationalism, faith, and socio-economic contexts starting from the 19th century from a post-colonial perspective. I rely on fashion and post-colonial theories to address three sets of questions: (i) to what extent do the shifts in socio-economic and political discourses construct gender norms and redefine the feminist quest concerning clothing choice in modern / post-colonial Egypt? (ii) Can we read fashion as a resistance strategy to Egyptian patriarchal forces and hegemonic Western secular modernity in contemporary post-colonial Egypt? (iii) How does fashion disrupt the claimed monolithic Muslim women's identity? Finally, I discuss how Leila Aboulela's literary texts deconstruct the claimed fixed relationship between modernity and its assumed emancipating values and Western dress in her texts Lyrics Alley (2010) and Bird Summons (2019). The term "clothes" is used mainly to refer to the process of veiling and unveiling as an expression of a feminist quest of Egyptian women in the public sphere.

    Abstract: Aktuelle Zahlen zum Verlust der Artenvielfalt verdeutlichen die dringende Notwendigkeit, Strategien der Biodiversitätserhaltung zu entwickeln. Vor diesem Hintergrund ist es Ziel des Beitrages, erstens treibende Faktoren, die zur Abnahme der Vielfalt geführt haben, durch Rückgriff auf feministische Perspektiven zum gesellschaftlichen Naturverhältnis zu erklären und so wesentliche Blindstellen und dominante Narrative im Biodiversitätsdiskurs offenzulegen. Zweitens plädieren wir für eine Perspektivenerweiterung des Diskurses in die Küche: Die alltägliche Ernährung muss stärker in Biodiversitätspolitiken einbezogen werden, denn – so die zentrale These unseres Beitrages – sie bietet die Chance, Agrobiodiversität mit der eigenen Lebenswelt in Verbindung zu bringen und durch die Mahlzeit zu ›schmecken‹ und ›erleben‹. Diese Erweiterung bietet Potential, die Diskussion um Biodiversität von einer profit- zu einer bedürfnisorientierten Debatte zu lenken, jenseits von der Ausbeutung natürlicher Ressourcen und der Minderbewertung der Sorgearbeit von Frauen. Dabei stützen wir uns auf den Ansatz der Feministischen Politischen Ökologie, der gesellschaftserhaltende Sorgearbeit explizit mit ökologischen Fragen und natürlichen Ressourcen in einen Zusammenhang stellt. Anhand empirischer Befunde einer qualitativ-partizipativen Untersuchung zu indigenem Blattgemüse in Kenia illustrieren wir, wie Frauen in unterschiedlichen lokalen und sozioökomischen Kontexten Sorge für die Erhaltung von Biodiversität tragen und von der Küche aus aktiv zu einer nachhaltigen Lebensgrundlage für sich, Erzeuger*innen und ihre Umwelt beitragen.
