    Abstract: "Extreme polarization in American politics - and especially in the U.S. Congress - is perhaps the most confounding political phenomenon of our time. This book binds together polarization in Congress and polarization in the electorate within an ever-expanding feedback loop. This loop is powered by the discipline exerted by the respective political parties on their Congressional members and district candidates and maintained by the voters in each Congressional district who must choose between the alternatives offered. These alternatives are just as extreme in competitive as in lop-sided districts. Tight national party discipline produces party delegations in Congress that are each ideologically narrowly distributed but widely separated from one another. As district constituencies become more polarized and are egged on by activists, parties are further motivated to move past a threshold and appeal to their respective bases rather than to voters in the political center. America has indeed acquired parties with clear platforms - once thought to be a desirable goal, but these parties are now feuding camps. What resolution might there be? Just as the progressive movement slowly replaced the Gilded Age, might a new reform effort replace the current squabble? Or could an asymmetry develop in the partisan constraints that would lead to ascendancy of the center, or might a new and over-riding issue generate a cross-cutting dimension, opening the door to a new politics? Only the future will tell"--

    Abstract: Adopting a transnational lens, Immigrants’ Citizenship Perceptions: Sri Lankans in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand investigates Sri Lankan immigrants’ complex views towards their home (Sri Lankan) and host (Australian or Aotearoa New Zealand) citizenship and the factors that affect them. The book argues that the existing citizenship policies and popular discourses towards immigrants have a strong nation-statist bias in which native citizens believe that they know how exactly immigrants should behave or feel as host citizens. The book problematises this assumption by highlighting the fact that it represents more how immigrants’ citizenship perceptions should be while ignoring how they actually are. Unlike native citizens, immigrants must balance two different positions in how they view citizenship, that is, as native citizens of their home countries and as immigrants in their host countries. These two positionalities lead immigrants to a very different perspective of citizenship. Deliberating on the complexities displayed in Sri Lankan immigrants’ views on their home and host citizenship, the book presents a critical analysis of citizenship views from immigrants’ standpoint. This book will hence be useful for policy makers, students, and researchers in the fields of migration and citizenship as it looks at immigrants’ contextual realities in depth and suggests an alternative approach to understanding their perceptions of citizenship.“The study is an in-depth exploration into what makes ‘citizenship’ meaningful to Sinhalese and Tamil Sri Lankans living in Australia and New Zealand.     Abstract: Eine Besonderheit der spanischen Kolonialherrschaft ist das explizite Verbot für »Ausländer«, nach Amerika zu reisen oder sich dort anzusiedeln. Dennoch lebten viele Immigranten englischer, portugiesischer, italienischer oder französischer Herkunft in den hispano-amerikanischen Kolonien. Diese »extranjeros«, deren Ausweisung zwar oft angeordnet, aber selten praktiziert wurde, stehen im Zentrum der Studie. Martin Biersack geht dem widersprüchlichen und oft spannungsreichen Verhältnis von »Spaniern« und »Ausländern«, Norm und Praxis, Duldung und Ausweisung nach und kann so erklären, wie und warum die Integration nichtspanischer Immigranten in die vormoderne koloniale Gesellschaft gelang, obwohl sie formal von dieser ausgeschlossen waren.

Mit ihren Erkenntnissen leistet die Arbeit einen Beitrag zur diskriminierungs- und rassismuskritischen Organisationsforschung. While the subject has long been the focus of the integration discourse, migrant organisations are increasingly taking a central position in the struggle for the power to interpret this transition. Against this background, the study analyses the conditions under which collectives within a (post-)migrant society attain social existence and agency. How are they addressed in integration policy and how do they position themselves in relation to this appropriation?

Wie aber lassen sich Entstehung und Verlauf dieser Konflikte erklären? Dieser Frage nähert sich Sarah Kirst in einer Fallstudie zu zwei Konflikten um Zugang zu Land im Kontext der Umsetzung agrarindustrieller Vorhaben in Ghana. Aus machtkritischer Perspektive beleuchtet sie die Rolle traditioneller Autoritäten, die zentrale Akteur*innen in diesen Konflikten sind.     Abstract: "The book is a sociocultural microhistory of migrants. From the 1880s to the 1930s, it traces the lives of the occupants of a housing complex located just north of the French capital, in the heart of the Plaine-Saint-Denis. Starting in the 1870s, that industrial suburb became a magnet for working-class migrants of diverse origins, from within France and abroad. The author examines how the inhabitants of that particular place identified themselves and others. The study looks at the role played, in the construction of social difference, by interpersonal contacts, institutional interactions and, migration. The objective of the book is to carry out an original experiment: applying microhistorical methods to the history of modern migrations. Beyond its own material history, the tenement is an observation point: it was deliberately selected for its high degree of demographic diversity, which contrasts with the typical objects of the traditional, ethnicity-based scholarship on migration. The micro lens allows for the reconstruction of the itineraries, interactions, and representations of the tenement's occupants, in both their singularity and their structural context. Through its many individual stories, the book restores a degree of complexity that is often overlooked by historical accounts at broader levels"--

    Abstract: Warum folgt aus einer prekären gesellschaftlichen Lage nicht automatisch ein politisches Subjekt? Anhand von Interviews mit Teilnehmerinnen von Aktivierungsmaßnahmen werden aus poststrukturalistischer Perspektive die Kämpfe untersucht, die unternommen werden müssen, um den eigenen Subjektstatus gegen die Gefahr der Verwerfung zu sichern. Damit leistet die Studie einen Beitrag zur Theoretisierung und Empirie von Subjektivierung im Horizont sozialer Ungleichheit, Prekarität und Politik

In manchen Weltregionen brechen heute immer mehr Menschen auf, um ihr Glück dauerhaft woanders zu suchen. Was macht das mit ihrer Heimat – und was folgt daraus für die reichen Zielländer im globalen Norden? Der Soziologe Thomas Faist bringt Licht ins Dunkel – und räumt mit einigen grassierenden Mythen zur globalen Migration im 21. Jahrhundert auf. Der Begriff «Exit» bezeichnet die Entscheidung, die eigene Heimat zu verlassen, weil es dort schlichtweg keine Perspektiven mehr gibt. Sie ist zum politischen Massenphänomen unserer Zeit und vor allem im globalen Süden zu einer Alternative zum sozialen Protest geworden. Die massenhafte Abwanderung aus verarmten Regionen etwa auf dem afrikanischen Kontinent verschärft sich nicht zuletzt infolge des Klimawandels, der den globalen Süden ungleich härter trifft als den globalen Norden. Dadurch entstehen sowohl in den Immigrations- als auch in den Emigrationsländern neue politische Konfliktkonstellationen. Die Fragmentierung der europäischen Parteienlandschaft etwa wäre ohne die neuen Formen globaler Migration im 21. Jahrhundert undenkbar. Auf der anderen Seite wird die weltweite soziale Ungleichheit, die Schere zwischen Nord und Süd, durch immer rigidere Migrationsregime zementiert statt abgemildert. Es bedarf folglich einer neuen, fairen Migrationspolitik, um den Exit im globalen Süden in eine für alle Beteiligten gewinnbringende Mobilität zulenken. Thomas Faist, einer der führenden Migrationsexperten in Europa, legt in seinem Buch die Summe seiner Forschung zum Thema vor.

    Abstract: Moving beyond two main concepts of 'interlingual' and 'intralingual' discrimination, this Cambridge Element addresses the concept of 'translingual discrimination', which refers to inequality based on transnational migrants' specific linguistic and communicative repertoires that are (il)legitimized by the national order of things. Translingual discrimination adds intensity to transnational processes, with transnational migrants showing two main characteristics of exclusion - 'translingual name discrimination' and its associated elements such as 'name stigma' and 'name microaggression'; and 'translingual English discrimination' and its elements such as 'accentism', 'stereotyping' and 'hallucination'. The accumulation of these characteristics of translingual discrimination causes negative emotionality in its victims, including 'foreign language anxiety' and 'translingual inferiority complexes'. Consequently, transnational migrants adopt coping strategies such as 'CV whitening', 'renaming practices', 'purification', and 'ethnic evasion' while searching for translingual safe spaces

    Abstract: Khawaja Sira of Pakistan are a heterogeneous group of marginalized gender nonconforming individuals who defy traditional notions of gender and sexuality. Based on ethnographic fieldwork in Lahore, Pakistan, Governing Thirdness provides important insights about the identity, marginalization and governance of the Khawaja Sira as they try to live an unliveable life. Taking a broad view of governance, this book includes a comprehensive analysis of governance of the Khawaja Sira across legal, social and administrative institutions. It also argues that labels like third gender and transgender fails to account for the gender fluid lives and multiple types of individuals who identify as Khawaja Sira, yet these categories, largely imported from the west, are used without much thought to govern this heterogeneous group

    Abstract: Arguing that demographic thought begins not with quantification but in attempts to control the qualities of people, Human Empire traces two transformations spanning the early modern period. First was the emergence of population as an object of governance through a series of engagements in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century England, Ireland, and colonial North America, influenced by humanist policy, reason of state, and natural philosophy, and culminating in the creation of political arithmetic. Second was the debate during the long eighteenth century over the locus and limits of demographic agency, as church, civil society, and private projects sought to mobilize and manipulate different marginalized and racialized groups - and as American colonists offered their own visions of imperial demography. This innovative, engaging study examines the emergence of population as an object of knowledge and governance and connects the history of demographic ideas with their early modern intellectual, political, and colonial contexts

Natascha Müller nimmt sich diesem Komplex an und untersucht, wie »menschenrechtsorientierte Antisemitismen« weltweit für den BDS-Diskurs mobilisieren.     Abstract: "This book explores the multiform and shifting locations of borders and boundaries in social life, related to difference and belonging. It contributes to understanding categories of difference as a building block for forms of belonging and inequality in the world today and as underpinning modern capitalist societies and their forms of governance. Reflecting on the ways in which we might theorise the connections between different social divisions and identities, a translocational lens for addressing modalities of power is developed, stressing relationality, the spatio-temporal and the processual in social relations. The book is organised around contemporary dilemmas of difference and inequality, relating to fixities and fluidities in social life and to current developments in the areas of racialisation, migration, gender, sexuality and class relations, and in theorising the articulations of gender, class and ethnic hierarchies. Rejecting the view that gender, ethnicity, race, class or the more specific categories of migrants or refugees pertain to social groups with certain fixed characteristics, they are treated as interconnected and interdependent places within a landscape of inequality making. This innovative and groundbreaking book constitutes a significant contribution to scholarship on intersectionality"--
