Abstract: Mainly investigating the share of women in national parliaments, the vast cross-national literature on women’s descriptive (numerical) representation frequently overlooks women’s local representation. Yet, local councils are important political arenas. To what extent are women underrepresented there? What are the determinants of the variation of women’s local representation within and across countries? We investigate these questions through a subnational-level study, covering 272 regions in 29 European countries. Using multilevel modeling, we find that regions with high female labor force participation support for leftist rather than radical right parties and high degrees of urbanization tend to elect more women. Our results also indicate that high women’s representation levels at the national level trickle down to the local level.

Abstract: While the average percentage of women in national legislatures increased by nearly 20 percentage points from less than 5 percent in the early 1960s to 22 percent in 2014, it will still take 70–80 years for women to achieve parity in political representation, if women’s presence in elected office continues to grow at the current rate. In this article, I focus on one factor, income inequality, which potentially slows down women’s advancements in politics. I hypothesize that high-income inequalities, because they are not gender neutral, disproportionally disadvantage women’s political careers. I test this hypothesis with the help of a large-scale database, which includes information on women’s representation, income inequalities, and eight theoretically informed control variables for more than 140 countries from 1960 to 2014. Through latent growth models and Tobit models, I find that income inequalities slow down the growth rate in women’s representation.

Abstract: Focusing on the Attac movements in France and Germany, this book seeks to explain the dramatic differences that exist between the individual and organisational levels of activism. The author derives engagement patterns for various types of activists and develops a typology of social movement organisations positing possible trends in membership, The Attac organisations in France and Germany are among the largest, best coordinated and most closely aligned bodies of the anti-globalisation movement that exist today yet there are glaring differences in the manner in which the organisations operate and in how individual members identify and engage with the movement. Through insightful interviews with Attac activists in France and Germany, Daniel Stockemer seeks to understand the significant divergences between the organisations despite their clear ideological parallels as well as the geographical, social and political similarities that exist between the two countries. In doing so this book provides a strong addition to the literature on activist movements on the national and international stage generally through the author's derivation of engagement patterns for various types of activists and development of a typology of social movement organisations that undercover possible trends in membership. The result is a book that will provide an informative and engaging read for students and scholars of activist movements at both an organisational and individual level
Abstract: An interesting comparative study. Playing with the interaction of individual motives and organizational appeals, the author accounts for the diverging trajectories of the branches of Attac in Germany and France. Applying and testing a motivational model he develops a dynamical approach to protest participation. Bert Klandermans, Faculty of Social Sciences, Vrije University Amsterdam, Netherlands Why do people join, participate in, and leave social movement organizations (SMOs)? What can explain these organizations' diverse trajectories? Daniel Stockemer analyzes these theoretical issues by comparing the French and German branches of ATTAC, the influential spearhead of the alter-globalization movement. His nuanced account cogently demonstrates the value of integrating theoretical analyses of collective action with an empirical focus on the dynamics of SMOs. Abstract: This textbook offers an essential introduction to survey research and quantitative methods with clear instructions on how to conduct statistical tests with R. Building on the premise that we need to teach statistical methods in a holistic and practical format, the book guides students through the four main elements of survey research and quantitative analysis: (1) the importance of survey research, (2) preparing a survey, (3) conducting a survey and (4) analyzing a survey. In detail, students will learn how to create their own questionnaire on the basis of formulating hypotheses; sampling participants; disseminating their questionnaire; creating datasets; and analyzing their data. The data analytical sections of this revised and extended edition explain the theory, rationale and mathematical foundations of relevant bivariate and multi-variate statistical tests. These include the T-test, F-test, Chi-square test and correlation analyses, as well as bivariate and multivariate regression analyses. In addition, the book offers a brief introduction to statistical computing with R, which includes clear instructions on how to conduct these statistical tests in R. Given the breadth of its coverage, the textbook is suitable for introductory statistics, survey research and quantitative methods classes in the social sciences.

Abstract: This book provides an overview of the identity and sense of belonging of Muslims in the Western world. By presenting case studies on European countries such as France, the Netherlands and the UK, as well as the USA and Canada, it offers a comparative perspective on how Muslims feel toward and are integrated in their country of residence. The respective contributions examine the sense of belonging and identity of Muslims and compare their levels of integration. Furthermore, they discuss the compatibility of their religious beliefs and values with the political and democratic order of their country of residence, and make concrete policy recommendations. The book is chiefly intended for scholars of political science and migration studies who are seeking a comparative perspective on the status quo of Muslims’ integration in the Western world.
