    Abstract: Barry Buzan proposes a new approach to making International Relations a truly global discipline that transcends both Eurocentrism and comparative civilisations. He narrates the story of humankind as a whole across three eras, using its material conditions and social structures to show how global society has evolved. Deploying the English School's idea of primary institutions and setting their story across three domains - interpolity, transnational and interhuman - this book conveys a living historical sense of the human story whilst avoiding the overabstraction of many social science grand theories. Buzan sharpens the familiar story of three main eras in human history with the novel idea that these eras are separated by turbulent periods of transition. This device enables a radical retelling of how modernity emerged from the late 18th century. He shows how the concept of 'global society' can build bridges connecting International Relations, Global Historical Sociology and Global/World History.

    Abstract: Auf einer indonesischen Insel fällt eine Öllampe zu Boden, kurz danach begehen niederländische Soldaten ein Massaker an den Inselbewohnern.Wie hängen diese beiden Geschehnisse zusammen und was geschah danach? Mit dieser Frage beginnt Amitav Ghosh seine Recherche auf den Spuren der Muskatnuss. Heute alltägliches Gewürz, galt sie im 17. Jahrhundert als Luxusgut - allein eine Handvoll davon reichte aus, um einen Palast zu erbauen -, denn die seltene Frucht wuchs nur auf jener Insel, die niederländische Truppen vornehmlich deshalb in Besitz nahmen, um das Handelsmonopol für die Niederländische Ostindien-Kompanie zu sichern. Während Amitav Ghosh die Reise der Muskatnuss nachzeichnet, veranschaulicht er eindrucksvoll die Mechanismen von Kolonialismus und Ausbeutung der Einheimischen sowie der Natur durch westliche Länder. Mitreißend stellt er dabei die Verbindung geschichtlicher Entwicklungen mit aktuellen Realitäten her, verkettet niederländische Stillleben und die Nomenklatur nach Linné mit der Black-Lives-Matter-Bewegung, der Covid-Pandemie und der Standing Rock Sioux Reservation, um zu zeigen, dass der heutige Klimawandel in einer jahrhundertealten geopolitischen Ordnung verwurzelt ist, die vom westlichen Kolonialismus und seiner mechanistischen Weltsicht - die Erde als bloßem Ressourcenlieferant für die Menschheit - geschaffen wurde

Dabei ist in jüngster Zeit das Wort "Globalismus" zu einem Kampfbegriff geworden. David Kuchenbuch entschärft diese Debatten. Er erfasst »Globalismen« als Ausdruck eines globalen Bewusstseins, das auch die Kritik an der Globalisierung beinhaltet. In seinem Buch erzählt Kuchenbuch zum ersten Mal die wechselhafte Geschichte des globalen Denkens in der transatlantischen Moderne. Er rekonstruiert die sozialen Milieus, die kulturellen Konstellationen und die politischen Mobilisierungsprozesse, aus denen heraus Globalismen entstanden. Es geht um Phänomene wie die utopischen Hoffnungen, die sich Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs auf eine friedliche "One World" richteten, oder um die in den 1970er Jahren verbreitete Sorge angesichts "globaler Interdependenzen". So zeigt dieses konzise und anschaulich geschriebene Buch, wie stark historische Erfahrungen in gegenwärtigen Debatten fortwirken.

    Abstract: Wie prägten die globalen Integrationsvorgänge des „langen 19. Jahrhunderts“ die Angehörigen einer Hamburger Kaufmannsfamilie? Inwiefern entstand bei ihnen ein globales Bewusstsein? Dank eines an Selbstzeugnissen reichen Familienarchivs erforscht die vorliegende Studie diese Fragen aus einer akteurszentrierten Perspektive im Rahmen einer Sozial- und Kulturgeschichte der Globalisierung. Anhand des Konzepts der Translokalität analysiert sie die Auswirkungen der Globalisierungsprozesse auf die Praktiken, Wahrnehmungen und Zugehörigkeiten der in Hamburg, Bordeaux und Singapur aktiven Kaufmannsfamilie Meyer. Sie zeigt, dass die Meyer primär „translokal“ handelten und dachten. Indem sie auf die Diskrepanz zwischen der zunehmenden Bedeutung des Globalen und der begrenzten Wahrnehmung des globalen Charakters der Integrationsprozesse aufgrund dieses Vorrangs des Lokalen hindeutet, trägt sie zur schärferen Konturierung des Bildes der Erfahrungen der Globalisierungsprozesse durch europäische bürgerliche Eliten bei.

Während ein kleiner Kreis Privilegierter heute nahezu überallhin reisen darf, bleibt die große Mehrheit der Weltbevölkerung weiterhin systematisch außen vor. Während die Mobilität von Menschen über Grenzen hinweg in den letzten Jahrzehnten stetig zunahm und Grenzen immer offener schienen, fand gleichzeitig eine in Wissenschaft und Öffentlichkeit unterschätzte Gegenentwicklung statt. Vielerorts ist es zu einer neuen Fortifizierung gekommen, zum Bau neuer abschreckender Mauern und militarisierter Grenzübergänge. Grenzen wurden zudem immer selektiver und – unterstützt durch die Digitalisierung – zu Smart Borders aufgerüstet. Und die Grenzkontrolle hat sich räumlich massiv ausgedehnt, ja ist zu einer globalen Unternehmung geworden, die sich vom Territorium ablöst. Der Soziologe Steffen Mau analysiert, auf welche Weise und mit welchen Mitteln die neuen Sortiermaschinen Mobilität und Immobilität zugleich schaffen: Für erwünschte Reisende sollen sich Grenzen wie Kaufhaustüren öffnen, für andere sollen sie fester denn je verschlossen bleiben. Nirgends tritt das Janusgesicht der Globalisierung deutlicher zutage als an den Grenzen des 21. Jahrhunderts

Steffen Mau zeigt, dass Grenzen im Zeitalter der Globalisierung von Anbeginn nicht offener gestaltet, sondern zu machtvollen Sortiermaschinen umgebaut wurden. Während ein kleiner Kreis Privilegierter heute nahezu überallhin reisen darf, bleibt die große Mehrheit der Weltbevölkerung weiterhin systematisch außen vor. Während die Mobilität von Menschen über Grenzen hinweg in den letzten Jahrzehnten stetig zunahm und Grenzen immer offener schienen, fand gleichzeitig eine in Wissenschaft und Öffentlichkeit unterschätzte Gegenentwicklung statt. Vielerorts ist es zu einer neuen Fortifizierung gekommen, zum Bau neuer abschreckender Mauern und militarisierter Grenzübergänge. Grenzen wurden zudem immer selektiver und - unterstützt durch die Digitalisierung - zu Smart Borders aufgerüstet. Und die Grenzkontrolle hat sich räumlich massiv ausgedehnt, ja ist zu einer globalen Unternehmung geworden, die sich vom Territorium ablöst. Der Soziologe Steffen Mau analysiert, auf welche Weise und mit welchen Mitteln die neuen Sortiermaschinen Mobilität und Immobilität zugleich schaffen: Für erwünschte Reisende sollen sich Grenzen wie Kaufhaustüren öffnen, für andere sollen sie fester denn je verschlossen bleiben. Nirgends tritt das Janusgesicht der Globalisierung deutlicher zutage als an den Grenzen des 21. Jahrhunderts.     Abstract: "The Survival Regime explores the concept of survival to describe the effects on politics of the fusion of war and capital in globalization. Survival defines a sort of degree zero governmentality that has resulted from the crumbling of the political and spatial architecture of modernity, particularly the state. Survival does not simply name the new content of all politics or the economic law of the strongest of neoliberalism. Rather, it theorizes how systemic violence and permanent instability force political life to struggle for its own existence, thus generating a regime based on productive engagement and urgent intervention. Through a critical dialogue with various contemporary thinkers (Galli, Hardt and Negri, Esposito, Agamben, Derrida, and Schmitt, among others), Edgar Illas theorizes survival as a global logic that overcomes the links between life and power explained by the Foucauldian paradigm of biopolitics. He examines parallel notions such as singularity, aleatoriness, eclecticism and distinction to question previous theorizations of the political based on class struggle, inclusion, hegemony, or recognition of demands. Through the intersection of different lines of inquiry, including Marxism, war theory, biopolitics, and deconstruction, The Survival Regime contributes to the rethinking of critical theory, political theory, and cultural studies in globalization"--

    Abstract: "A critical reading of both literary and non-literary German texts published between 1490 and 1540 exposes a populist backlash against perceived social and political disruptions, the dramatic expansion of spatial and epistemological horizons, and the growth of global trade networks. These texts opposed the twin phenomena of pluralization and secularization, which promoted a Humanist tolerance for ambiguity, boosted globalization and spatial expansion around 1500, and promoted new ways of imagining the world. Part I considers threats to the political order and the protestations against them, above all a vigorous defense of the common good. Part II traces the intellectual and epistemological upheaval triggered by the spatial discoveries and the new methods of visual and verbal representation of space. Part III examines the nationalistic backlash triggered by the rising global trade and related abusive trading practices and by perceived undue foreign influences. It is the basic premise of this book that the texts examined here protested the observed disruptions of the status quo and sought to reestablish a stable imperial order in the face of political and social upheaval and of the felt cultural decline of the German nation." --

    Abstract: Gerade in Zeiten des Corona-Virus wird erschreckend deutlich, dass das Gemeinwohl in unseren Gesellschaften in den letzten Jahren an Bedeutsamkeit verloren hat. Die Demokratien stehen auf dem Prüfstand, wir sind Zeugen einer populistischen Revolte. Die Wahl Trumps, der Brexit, der Erfolg der AfD – das sind die wütenden Antworten auf die wachsende Ungleichheit in der Gesellschaft. Der Moralphilosoph Michael J. Sandel sieht die Ursache dafür in der Tyrannei der Leistungsgesellschaft. Wer hat in unserer Gesellschaft Erfolg – und warum? Unter dem gesellschaftlich unumstrittenen Mantra »Wer hart arbeitet, kann alles erreichen« haben wir gelernt zu glauben, dass jeder genau das hat, was er verdient. Die Profiteure und Nutznießer dieses Systems, das Erfolg auf Leistung und Talent zurückführt, gehen darum davon aus, dass sie ihren Erfolg verdienen, dass er ihnen zusteht, eben weil sie sich angestrengt haben. Im Umkehrschluss bedeutet das, dass diejenigen, die am System scheitern, selbst Schuld sind. Die Hybris der Gewinner ebenso wie die Demütigung der Verlierer befeuern den populistischen Protest, dessen Zeugen wir aktuell weltweit sind. Im Kern zielt der Unmut gegenüber den Eliten auf eine Kritik an der Tyrannei der Leistungsgesellschaft, und diese Kritik ist berechtigt. Seit Jahrzehnten nimmt die Ungleichheit in den demokratischen Gesellschaften zu, Verlierer und Gewinner des Systems entfernen sich sowohl auf sozialer als auch auf finanzieller Ebene immer weiter voneinander. Statt an einer trennenden Ethik des Erfolgs festzuhalten, müssen wir an einer Politik des Gemeinwohls und der Gerechtigkeit arbeiten, die allen Mitgliedern der Gesellschaft zugutekommt.     Abstract: Rezension: Als das Deutsche Reich am 28. Juni 1919 den Vertrag von Versailles unterzeichnete, gingen die überseeischen Kolonien an die Siegermächte des Ersten Weltkriegs über. Lange vergessen, kehrt die Kolonialperiode in Ländern wie Namibia, Kamerun oder Ruanda in den letzten Jahren in die Erinnerung zurück. Was bedeutet dieses Wiederauftauchen für die Bundesrepublik? Müsste in der "postkolonialen" Sichtweise nicht auch das deutsche Eroberungsstreben in Richtung Osten eine Rolle spielen? Die neue Erinnerungskultur hat gravierende Auswirkungen für das Selbstverständnis eines Landes, dessen Bevölkerung immer diverser wird. Der lange Schatten der deutschen "Kulturmission" findet sich heute etwa im Umgang mit der "Schuldenkrise", mit Migration und Flucht und im alltäglichen Rassismus. „Die deutsche Kolonialpolitik ging über Südwestafrika hinaus.     Abstract: This book brings together theories of world society with poststructuralist and postcolonial work on modern subjectivity to understand the universalising and particularising processes of globalisation. It addresses a theoretical void in global studies by attending to the co-constituted process through which modern subjectivities and global processes emerge and interact. The editors outline a key problem in global studies, which is a lack of engagement between the local/particular/individual and the ‘universalising’ processes in which they are situated. The volume deals with this concern with contributions from historical sociologists, poststructuralist and postcolonial scholars and by focusing in the Middle East, religion in global modernity and non-human subjectivities.

    Abstract: The book critically analyzes the ongoing changes in the regional, intra-regional, and global dynamics of cooperation, from a multi-disciplinary and pluralist perspective. It is based on the insight that in a post-hegemonic world the formation of regions and the process of globalization can be largely disconnected from the orbit of the US, and that a plurality of power and worldviews has replaced US hegemony. In spite of these changes, most existing analyses of current changes in the world order still rely upon Western-centered approaches, and Westphalian thinking. Against this backdrop, the book proposes to advance a truly global IR understanding of the post-hegemonic world, and weaves together the pluralist and multi-disciplinary perspectives of scholars located all around the world. The book explores different questions, for example the status and role of BRICS in the changing international order; how countries in the Global South can use regionalism to change the world order; the competing worldviews that manifest themselves in the institutional variety of regionalism; and, most importantly, how all these changes push International Relations as a field to become more global, or at least to go beyond Westphalian thinking - thus bringing the role of multilateralism back to the discussion.

    Abstract: "As we will demonstrate in this book, the new fault lines around globalization can no longer be fully captured along the classic redistributional left-right axis. In important respects, they run perpendicular to it. Since the end of the Cold War, parties of the mainstream Left and Right, which had transformed themselves in the decades before from 'class' to catch-all parties (Kirchheimer 1965), have converged further on pro-globalization positions on a range of issues, such as support for European integration, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and trade agreements such as TTIP. Even on immigration, probably the most divisive of the issues related to globalization, differences between the mainstream Left and Right have become much smaller than they used to be - both because mainstream left parties have distanced themselves from earlier experiments with multicultural policies and because Conservatives have, at least in large parts of Western Europe, embraced pro-immigration views"--

Rezension (ekz): Der kenianische Autor (Jahrgang 1938) ist mit seinen Lebenserinnerungen "Träume in Zeiten des Krieges" (2010) und "Im Haus des Hüters" (2013) bei uns bekannt geworden und (war?) für den Literatur-Nobelpreis im Gespräch. In diesem Buch sind sieben Essays und Vorträge aus der Zeit vor 2009 versammelt, die grundsätzliche Themen behandeln wie die Verschleierungsfunktion des Wortes "Stamm", die Geschichte und gegenwärtige Bedeutung von Sklaverei, die afrikanischen Intellektuellen und ihr Verhältnis zur Sprachenvielfalt, zur Globalisierung und zu Massenvernichtungswaffen. Den Essays liegt "der Ruf nach einer visionären, geeinten afrikanischen Führung zugrunde", was nicht bedeutet, dass die Tatsache von 50 durchaus unterschiedlichen afrikanischen Staaten und die vielfach noch bestehenden Diktaturen übergangen würden. - Das Buch mag als Hintergrundmaterial für die innerafrikanische Kritik an der Art der Dekolonisation und auch an der westlichen "Entwicklungshilfe" genutzt werden und wäre dann eine gute Ergänzung zur westlichen Kritik etwa bei V. Seitz in "Afrika wird armregiert" (2018). (2)

Seit Jahrhunderten strukturiert sie die Gesellschaft und beeinflusst Bildung, Religion und Kultur. Einwanderung prägt die gesamte Arbeitswelt – von Winzerbetrieben bis zu Minen und Fabriken. Nationalökonomische Planungen zielten immer darauf ab, Migrationsprozesse zu steuern. Das betraf den Import und die Ausbeutung von Sklaven, Vertrags- und Wanderarbeitern. Couragiert organisierten sie Widerstand gegen die rassistische Kolonialverwaltung und das Apartheidregime. Südafrika ist auch das Ziel von Kriegsflüchtlingen: Vertriebene und Verfolgte suchen am Kap der guten Hoffnung Schutz vor Gewalt. Das Asylrecht des Landes gilt als vorbildlich und seine Demokratie wird von Menschen, die aus Diktaturen geflüchtet sind, geschätzt.     Abstract: The book critically analyzes the ongoing changes in the regional, intra-regional, and global dynamics of cooperation, from a multi-disciplinary and pluralist perspective. It is based on the insight that in a post-hegemonic world the formation of regions and the process of globalization can be largely disconnected from the orbit of the US, and that a plurality of power and worldviews has replaced US hegemony. In spite of these changes, most existing analyses of current changes in the world order still rely upon Western-centered approaches, and Westphalian thinking. Against this backdrop, the book proposes to advance a truly global IR understanding of the post-hegemonic world, and weaves together the pluralist and multi-disciplinary perspectives of scholars located all around the world. The book explores different questions, for example the status and role of BRICS in the changing international order; how countries in the Global South can use regionalism to change the world order; the competing worldviews that manifest themselves in the institutional variety of regionalism; and, most importantly, how all these changes push International Relations as a field to become more global, or at least to go beyond Westphalian thinking - thus bringing the role of multilateralism back to the discussion.

    Abstract: "Gerard Delanty offers a critical interpretation of the European heritage today in light of recent developments in the human and social sciences, and in view of a mood of crisis in Europe that compels us to re-think the European past. One of the main insights informing this book is that a transnational and global perspective on European history can reorient the European heritage in a direction that offers a more viable way for contemporary Europe to articulate an intercultural identity in keeping with the emerging shape of Europe, and with its own often acknowledged past. He argues that the European heritage is based less on a universalistic conception of culture than on a plurality of interconnecting narratives, and the inclusion of new voices and is being forged in new spaces of critical dialogue. Such a perspective opens up new directions for scholarship and public debate on heritage that are guided by critical cosmopolitan considerations that highlight contention, resistances, competition and dissonance. He argues that the specificity of the European dimension of culture is in the entanglement of many cultures rather than in an original culture. The cultures of Europe are not separated but have been shaped in close interaction with each other and with the non-European world. Nations are not therefore unique, exceptional or fundamentally different from each other.
