    Abstract: This book offers a critical analysis of global mobilities across China and Italy in history. In three periods in the twentieth century, new patterns of physical mobilities and cultural contact were established between the two countries which were either novel at the time of their emergence or impactful on subsequent periods. The first two chapters provide overviews of writings by Italians in China and by Chinese in Italy in the twentieth century. The remaining chapters cover: Republican Chinas relationships with Italy and Italian Fascist colonialism in China during the 1920s1930s; Italian travelers to China during the Cold War from the 1950s to the 1970s; migrations between China and Italy during the 2000s2010s. In analyzing these cultural mobilities, this book opens a new line of inquiry in Chinese-Italian Cultural Studies, which has been dominated by historical study, and contributes a significant case study to the scholarship on global cultural mobilities

    Abstract: "The field of biopolitics encompasses issues from health and hygiene, birth rates, fertility and sexuality, life expectancy and demography, to eugenics and racial regimes. This book is the first to provide a comprehensive view on these issues for Central and Eastern Europe in the 20th century. The cataclysms of imperial collapse, World War(s) and the Holocaust but also the rise of state socialism after 1945 provided extraordinary and distinct conditions for the governing of life and death. The volume collects the latest research and empirical studies from the region to showcase the diversity of biopolitical regimes in their regional and global context - from hunger relief for Hungarian children after World War I to abortion legislation in communist Poland. It underlines the similarities as well, demonstrating how biopolitical strategies in this area often revolved around the notion of an endangered nation; and how ideological schemes and post-imperial experiences in Eastern Europe further complicate a "western" understanding of democratic participatory and authoritarian repressive biopolitics. The new geographical focus invites scholars and students of social and human sciences to reconsider established perspectives on the history of population management and the history of Europe"--

    Abstract: Seit dem Ersten Weltkrieg galten Massenkommunikation und Propaganda als integrale Faktoren des politischen und militärischen Geschehens. Damit wuchs der Bedarf an systematischer Expertise und wissenschaftlicher Erforschung. Während des Zweiten Weltkrieges und im Kalten Krieg wurde die Planung, Beobachtung und Analyse von Propaganda zu einem wichtigen Feld strategischer Wissensproduktion. Im Wege einer dreiseitig verflochtenen Wahrnehmungs- und Beziehungsgeschichte untersucht Benno Nietzel, welche Rolle Kommunikationsexperten und Wissenschaftler in der Propaganda dreier Länder spielten: in den Vereinigten Staaten, in Deutschland und der Sowjetunion. Verschiedene Akteursgruppen konkurrierten jeweils um Gehör, Einfluss und Zuständigkeiten auf dem Gebiet der Propaganda. Aus ihren Erfolgen und ihrem Scheitern ergibt sich eine alternative Geschichte von Verwissenschaftlichungsprozessen und Expertentum im 20. Jahrhundert, die von Ungleichzeitigkeiten, Gegenläufigkeiten und Widersprüchen gekennzeichnet ist

    Abstract: Adopting a transnational lens, Immigrants’ Citizenship Perceptions: Sri Lankans in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand investigates Sri Lankan immigrants’ complex views towards their home (Sri Lankan) and host (Australian or Aotearoa New Zealand) citizenship and the factors that affect them. The book argues that the existing citizenship policies and popular discourses towards immigrants have a strong nation-statist bias in which native citizens believe that they know how exactly immigrants should behave or feel as host citizens. The book problematises this assumption by highlighting the fact that it represents more how immigrants’ citizenship perceptions should be while ignoring how they actually are. Unlike native citizens, immigrants must balance two different positions in how they view citizenship, that is, as native citizens of their home countries and as immigrants in their host countries. These two positionalities lead immigrants to a very different perspective of citizenship. Deliberating on the complexities displayed in Sri Lankan immigrants’ views on their home and host citizenship, the book presents a critical analysis of citizenship views from immigrants’ standpoint. This book will hence be useful for policy makers, students, and researchers in the fields of migration and citizenship as it looks at immigrants’ contextual realities in depth and suggests an alternative approach to understanding their perceptions of citizenship.“The study is an in-depth exploration into what makes ‘citizenship’ meaningful to Sinhalese and Tamil Sri Lankans living in Australia and New Zealand. Diese »extranjeros«, deren Ausweisung zwar oft angeordnet, aber selten praktiziert wurde, stehen im Zentrum der Studie. Martin Biersack geht dem widersprüchlichen und oft spannungsreichen Verhältnis von »Spaniern« und »Ausländern«, Norm und Praxis, Duldung und Ausweisung nach und kann so erklären, wie und warum die Integration nichtspanischer Immigranten in die vormoderne koloniale Gesellschaft gelang, obwohl sie formal von dieser ausgeschlossen waren.

However, their achievements largely remain unrecognized by the dominant societies, as their perspectives are excluded from traditional modes of marking public memory.     Abstract: As we face new global challenges - from climate change to the international political order - the need to re-examine the historical roots of cosmopolitanism and liberal principles on a global scale has become increasingly central to the political conversation. Cosmopolitanism and the Enlightenment brings together leading scholars in cultural history, the history of ideas and global politics in order to reassess the complexity of cosmopolitanism during the Enlightenment and its various interpretations over time. Through a fresh and revisionist perspective, the volume explores issues of universalism and cultural diversity, the idea of civilization, race, gender, empire, colonialism, global inequality, national patriotism, international and civil conflict, and other forms of political discourse, challenging the simple negative stereotype that the Enlightenment was inevitably hierarchical and Eurocentric.     Abstract: This book illustrates the multiple roles of textbooks as victim, transformer, and accomplice to conflict by introducing the Intersecting Roles of Education in Conflict (IREC) framework for use in the research, development, production, distribution, and dissemination of textbooks and learning materials. The framework illustrates these three potentially overlapping roles by mapping the complex educational contexts of conflict-affected societies and considering how textbooks, learning materials, and education systems more broadly may simultaneously operate within these various roles. Country case studies from Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East are used to analyze primary and secondary school textbook development, content, and application from a variety of approaches that articulate conflict as protracted and/or socio-political violence. The breadth of case studies shows how conflict discourse circulates in educational systems and materials in a wide range of contexts, indicating that the complexity of the relationship between textbooks and conflict is not unique to one culture, geographic region, or type of conflict.

    Abstract: In der Dissertation werden drei künstlerische Arbeiten zu Flucht und Migration nach und innerhalb von Europa untersucht. Es handelt sich dabei um eine Filminstallation von Isaac Julien sowie eine Fotografie und eine multimediale Rauminstallation von Tanja Ostojić. Es wird davon ausgegangen, dass die Art und Weise, wie Flucht- und Migrationsbewegungen auf den und innerhalb des europäischen Kontinents repräsentiert werden, nicht zuletzt auch davon abhängt, wie letzterer – verstanden als räumliches und identitäres Konzept – imaginiert wird. Daher liegt ein Schwerpunkt in der Analyse der künstlerischen Arbeiten auf den Repräsentationen Europas. Theoretischer Bezugspunkt hierfür sind postkoloniale und kritische Europastudien. Darüber hinaus spielt Weiblichkeit eine wichtige Rolle in der Formierung spezifischer (Vorstellungs-)Bilder von Flucht und Migration einerseits, Europa andererseits und schließlich ihres Verhältnisses zueinander. Sie stellt daher den zweiten Schwerpunkt in der Analyse dar, die auf Beiträge in der feministischen Forschung zur Formierung von (nationalen) Gemeinschaften Bezug nimmt.
    Abstract: The dissertation examines three artistic works dealing with migration to and within Europe. The works examined are a film installation by Isaac Julien as well as a photograph and a multimedia installation by Tanja Ostojić. It is assumed that the way in which migration is represented on and within the European continent depends not least on how the latter - understood as a spatial and identitary concept - is imagined. Therefore, the analysis of the artistic works focuses on the representation of Europe. Theoretical reference points for this are postcolonial and critical European studies. Furthermore, femininity plays an important role in the formation of specific (imagined) images of migration on the one hand, of Europe on the other, and finally their relationship to one another. It therefore constitutes the second focus of the analysis, which makes reference to contributions in feminist research on the formation of (national) communities.

    Abstract: This book is about re-writing the history of cultures from a non-patriarchal perspective, bringing the forgotten matriarchal epoch to light again. It is based on Heide Goettner-Abendroth’s pioneering anthropological research on still extant matriarchal societies worldwide, which provided her with a new definition of "matriarchy" as true gender-egalitarian societies. According to modern Matriarchal Studies, matriarchies have never needed patriarchy’s hierarchical structures of domination, as they are socially egalitarian, economically balanced, and politically based on consensus decisions.This is the author’s background for re-examining the history of cultures.     Abstract: Klappentext: Issues of cultural identity and cultural heritage are at the heart of contemporary discourses in many parts of the world. They are used to identify and address the inequalities by marginalized groups; however, they also feed the re-nationalization and ethno-purist fantasies. But what exactly is culture? In this volume, the authors explore how culture is conceptualized and practised by young people in eight countries in numerous and very diverse contexts - schools, interest clubs, organizations and informal youth groups. The chapters show that concepts of culture vary widely within and across sites, regions and countries, highlighting the common, as well as particular, challenges that notions of identity and heritage pose for young people who often aspire to an inclusive and open society.

    Abstract: Vorstellungen Europas, Selbst- und Fremdbilder, Raum- und Grenzkonstruktionen wurden und werden besonders seit der Sattelzeit um 1800 gerade auch über Diskurse eines ‚Abendlandes‘ geformt. Abendlanddiskurse lassen sich als polyvalent einsetzbare, modellier- und adaptierbare Diskurskomplexe und als Gewebe von Erinnerungsdiskursen bezeichnen, die mal stärker nationalistisch, mal stärker religiös, mal stärker universalistisch ausgeformt, mehr oder weniger stark auf Grenzkonstruktion ausgerichtet sind und mehr oder weniger konkret politisch verwendet werden. Dem interdisziplinären Band wird die These zugrunde gelegt, dass Abendlanddiskurse wesentlich durch den Gebrauch von Gedächtnisbeständen, durch eine Pluralität miteinander verwobener Erinnerungsnarrative konstruiert werden. Im Fokus der Beiträge von Historikerinnen, Geschichtsdidaktikern und Literaturwissenschaftlern aus Deutschland, Österreich, Frankreich, Italien, Belgien und der Schweiz stehen Intellektuellendiskurse und deren Vermittlung im öffentlichen Raum, Literatur und Kunst.

    Abstract: Moving beyond two main concepts of 'interlingual' and 'intralingual' discrimination, this Cambridge Element addresses the concept of 'translingual discrimination', which refers to inequality based on transnational migrants' specific linguistic and communicative repertoires that are (il)legitimized by the national order of things. Translingual discrimination adds intensity to transnational processes, with transnational migrants showing two main characteristics of exclusion - 'translingual name discrimination' and its associated elements such as 'name stigma' and 'name microaggression'; and 'translingual English discrimination' and its elements such as 'accentism', 'stereotyping' and 'hallucination'. The accumulation of these characteristics of translingual discrimination causes negative emotionality in its victims, including 'foreign language anxiety' and 'translingual inferiority complexes'. Consequently, transnational migrants adopt coping strategies such as 'CV whitening', 'renaming practices', 'purification', and 'ethnic evasion' while searching for translingual safe spaces

    Abstract: Due to the significant number of immigrants in Europe, especially Germany, integration is an ongoing subject of debate. Since the 1970s, with the emergence of the discussions on ‘place,’ it has also been realized that the immigrant experience is associated with location. Nevertheless, due to the challenges in capturing the place and migration relevance, there is a gap in understanding the role of the migrant’s geography of experiences and its outcomes (Phillips & Robinson, 2015). This research aims to investigate the extent to which both the process of objective integration and the socio-spatial practices of high-skilled Iranian immigrants in Berlin outline and influence their sense of belonging to Berlin as the new “home.” The embedded mixed-method design had employed for this study. The quantitative analysis through Pearson’s correlation technique measured the strength of the association between Iranians’ settlement distribution and the characteristics of Berlins’ districts. The quantitative analysis provides contextual data to get a greater level of understanding of the case study’s interaction with place. The units of place intend to demonstrate the case study’s presence and possible interaction with places around their settlement location that relatively shapes their perception. The qualitative analysis comprises ethnographic fieldwork and semi-structured in-depth interviews with a homogeneous sample of Iranian immigrants in Berlin that provide data on individual and ethnic behaviors and trajectories and analyze the complex interactions between the immigrant’s experience and the role of place. This research uncovers that Iranian highly skilled immigrants are successful in integrating objectively; However, in regards to their state of belonging, it illustrated the following: The role of socio-ethnic culture of the case study in denotation of home and belonging; Iranian high-skilled immigrants’ efforts towards reaching a level of upward mobility overshadow their attempt to shape social and spatial interaction with Berliners and Berlin itself, which manifests both in their perception and use of urban space; and finally, the identification practice and the boundary-making as an act of reassurance and self-protection against the generalization of adjacent nationalities, demonstrated in the intersection of demographical settlement distribution of Iranians in Berlin and the ethnic diversity, impact the sense of belonging and place-making.

Sie ist zum politischen Massenphänomen unserer Zeit und vor allem im globalen Süden zu einer Alternative zum sozialen Protest geworden. Die massenhafte Abwanderung aus verarmten Regionen etwa auf dem afrikanischen Kontinent verschärft sich nicht zuletzt infolge des Klimawandels, der den globalen Süden ungleich härter trifft als den globalen Norden. Dadurch entstehen sowohl in den Immigrations- als auch in den Emigrationsländern neue politische Konfliktkonstellationen. Die Fragmentierung der europäischen Parteienlandschaft etwa wäre ohne die neuen Formen globaler Migration im 21. Jahrhundert undenkbar. Auf der anderen Seite wird die weltweite soziale Ungleichheit, die Schere zwischen Nord und Süd, durch immer rigidere Migrationsregime zementiert statt abgemildert. Es bedarf folglich einer neuen, fairen Migrationspolitik, um den Exit im globalen Süden in eine für alle Beteiligten gewinnbringende Mobilität zulenken. Thomas Faist, einer der führenden Migrationsexperten in Europa, legt in seinem Buch die Summe seiner Forschung zum Thema vor.

    Abstract: "This book is a vital exploration of the harrowing stories of mass displacement that took place in the first half of the 20th century from the perspective of forced migrants themselves. The volume brings together 15 interrelated case studies which show how the deportation, evacuation and flight of millions of people as a result of the First World War intensified rather than alleviated ethnic conflicts which culminated in population transfers on an even larger scale during and immediately after the Second World War. While each chapter focuses on a different group of refugees and displaced persons, the text as a whole looks at the experience of forced migration as a complex set of evolving relationships with the receiving society, the homeland, the broader diaspora and other migrant communities living within the same host country. This innovative, four-dimensional model provides an overarching conceptual framework that binds the chapters together within the longer arc of European history. By going beyond the conventional narratives of national victimhood and (un)successful assimilation of refugees, A Transnational History of Forced Migrants in Europe reveals that identities of forced migrants in the first half of the 20th century were individualised, hybrid and constantly reconstructed in response to socioeconomic forces and political pressures. The case studies collected in this volume further suggest that age, gender, social class, educational level and the personal experiences of 'unwilling nomads' are more important to the understanding of forced migration history than ethnoreligious identities of victims and perpetrators."--
