Based on a translation of Demetrius Cantemir's seminal "Book of the Science of Music" from the early eighteenth century, this work is the first to bring together contemporaneous notations, musical treatises, literary sources, travellers' accounts and iconography. These present a synthetic picture of the emergence of Ottoman composed and improvised instrumental music.     Abstract: "The identity politics of the householder Naths (Yogis), on the one hand, is one of the oldest and most persistent identity assertions in Bengal and Assam. On the other, for an array of reasons, the identity assertion of the householder Naths of Bengal and Assam has failed to draw academic curiosity so far. Since the late nineteenth century, a segment of the Naths, largely educated and elite, has been crafting their identity as Brahman grounded on their "origin myth", negotiating with the British colonial administration through different census enumerations, as well as internal social reforms. One of the primary reasons for their current lagging is that the Naths never politicised their identity and demands, and did not mobilise themselves in the democratic political arena"--

    Abstract: "This book challenges prevailing models of the ways formerly enslaved individuals in Ancient Rome navigated their social and economic landscape. Drawing on the rich epigraphic evidence left behind by municipal freedmen and freedwomen, who had been owned and manumitted by the communities of Roman Italy, it pushes back against ameliorating views of slavery as a temporary condition and positive notions of a prosperous and consciously proud Roman freedman class. Manumission was a far more complex process, and it did not always put former slaves and their descendants on the straight and narrow path of upward mobility"--

    Abstract: This book offers an analysis of the complex and shifting conditions of being young as well as the new ways in which young people engage in politics in Turkey. It is based on a closer examination of young people’s participation in the Gezi protests in 2013. From the perspective of cultural sociology, this work presents a nuanced discussion of the roots and dynamics of young people’s unexpected engagement and spectacular appearance at the protests, with a theoretical focus on the concepts of youth and the political, by exploring questions such as: How did young people experience the protests? How did they reflect on being young? How did they define the political? Grounded in ethnographic field research conducted via in-depth interviews, this book demonstrates that what happened in the Gezi protests was not a sudden and miraculous transformation of apolitical youth into political subjects on the streets, as has often been argued in public discourse. Rather, the protests brought into view the changes which had already been taking place in young people’s lives in Turkey as a result of the effects of both local and global processes, i.e. the influence of authoritarian politics and social change characterized by religion in everyday life, as well as the implications of neoliberal policies in the restructuring of urban spaces.

    Abstract: Die zentrale These des Buches lautet, dass nicht Natur, Unfälle, Gewalt, Katastrophen, Macht usw., sondern Wissen mehr denn je die Grundlage und Richtschnur menschlichen Handelns in allen Bereichen unserer Gesellschaft ist. Diese Untersuchung über Wissensgesellschaften ist daher als Antwort auf die grundlegende Beobachtung geschrieben, dass die moderne Wissenschaft keineswegs nur, wie heute noch oft angenommen wird, der Schlüssel und Zugang zu den Geheimnissen der Natur und des menschlichen Verhaltens ist, sondern vor allem das Werden einer Welt: Wissen als Motor und nicht nur als Kamera. Diese beispiellose Bedeutung des wissenschaftlichen Wissens bedeutet jedoch nicht, dass es ihm gelingen wird, traditionelle Lebensweisen und Einstellungen einfach zu überrollen, wie immer wieder erhofft oder ernsthaft befürchtet. Gleichzeitig sind Wissensgesellschaften keine soziale Formation im Stillstand. Die Dynamik des Wirtschaftssystems von Wissensgesellschaften, die Hand in Hand mit der Verrechtlichung von Wissen als der wichtigsten Ressource von Wissensgesellschaften geht, führt unmittelbar zur Transformation der Wissensgesellschaft in einen Wissenskapitalismus.

Chivalry is important not only for the self-image of the social group of knighted men, whose numbers declined over the course of the Middle Ages. An extraordinary power radiated from it: chivalrous norms shaped medieval societies as a whole, from Holy Roman Emperor to burgher. This knightly culture was especially expressed in the knight's self-understanding as warrior. Consequently, physical violence stood at the centre, not periphery, of representation and communication in social, military, and political life.
