    Abstract: In Shifts of Power: Modern Chinese Thought and Society , Luo Zhitian brings together nine essays to explore the causes and consequences of various shifts of power in modern Chinese society, including the shift from scholars to intellectuals, from the traditional state to the modern state, and from the people to society. Adopting a microhistorical approach, Luo situates these shifts at the intersection of social change and intellectual evolution in the midst of modern China’s culture wars with the West. Those culture wars produced new problems for China, but also provided some new intellectual resources as Chinese scholars and intellectuals grappled with the collisions and convergences of old and new in late Qing and early Republican China

These groups varied greatly in their organisation and teaching, yet in official state records they are routinely portrayed as belonging to the same esoteric tradition, stigmatised under generic labels such as "White Lotus" and "evil teaching", and accused of black magic, sedition and messianic agitation. Wu Junqing convincingly demonstrates that this "heresy construct" was not a reflection of historical reality but a product of the Chinese historiographical tradition, with its uncritical reliance on official sources. The imperial heresy construct remains influential in modern China, where it contributes to shaping policy towards unlicensed religious groups."--

    Abstract: In Martial Arts and the Body Politic in Indonesia Lee Wilson offers an innovative study of nationalism and the Indonesian state through the ethnography of the martial art of Pencak Silat. Wilson shows how technologies of physical and spiritual warfare such as Pencak Silat have long played a prominent role in Indonesian political society. He demonstrates the importance of these technologies to the display and performance of power, and highlights the limitations of theories of secular modernity for understanding political forms in contemporary Indonesia. He offers a compelling argument for a revisionist account of models of power in Indonesia in which authority is understood as precarious and multiple, and the body is politically charged because of its potential for transformation

    Abstract: Between Harmony and Discrimination explores the varying expressions of religious practices and the intertwined, shifting interreligious relationships of the peoples of Bali and Lombok. As religion has become a progressively more important identity marker in the 21st century, the shared histories and practices of peoples of both similar and differing faiths are renegotiated, reconfirmed or reconfigured. This renegotiation, inspired by Hindu or Islamic reform movements that encourage greater global identifications, has created situations that are perceived locally to oscillate between harmony and discrimination depending on the relationships and the contexts in which they are acting. Religious belonging is increasingly important among the Hindus and Muslims of Bali and Lombok; minorities (Christians, Chinese) on both islands have also sought global partners.     Abstract: As China enters the second decade of the 21st century, it faces tremendous challenges and crisis. How did China arrive at this point of crisis? How do we understand the nature of the challenges? More than any existing study of reform-era China, this volume offers a theoretical discussion of the cultural and social roots of the reform. It does so for the purpose of further exploring whether or not it is possible to imagine alternatives.     Abstract: Unter den Augen der staunenden Weltöffentlichkeit haben Islamisten der Miliz «Islamischer Staat» (IS) ein riesiges Gebiet in Irak und Syrien mit Großstädten, Waffenarsenalen und Ölvorkommen unter ihre Kontrolle gebracht - ein «Kalifat», das einmal die gesamte islamische Welt beherrschen und alle «Ungläubigen» unterjochen soll. Die riesige Terrororganisation zerstört den Frieden in der Region, bedroht Israel, verfolgt rücksichtslos Christen, Aleviten, Jeziden, Schiiten und überhaupt alle, die sich nicht zum «Islamischen Staat» bekennen, und vernichtet ihr kulturelles Erbe. Der Jihadismus-Experte Behnam T. Said geht den Hintergründen dieser Gefahr nach. Er erklärt, wie in Syrien seit Jahrzehnten im Geheimen islamistische Gruppen entstanden sind, die sich im Schatten der Aufstände gegen das Asad-Regime eine Machtbasis schaffen konnten, und wie es zur Feindschaft zwischen IS und al-Qaida - vertreten durch die kaum weniger gefährliche al-Nusra-Front - gekommen ist. Nicht zuletzt macht er deutlich, warum so viele Islamisten aus aller Welt, aus dem Westen und gerade aus Deutschland den Jihad unterstützen. Ein «Muss» für alle, die die Gefahr vor den Toren Europas besser verstehen wollen. Behnam T. Said, geb. 1982, Islamwissenschaftler am Landesamt für Verfassungsschutz in Hamburg, beobachtet seit Jahren salafistische und gewaltorientierte islamistische Bestrebungen in Deutschland und der arabischen Welt und ist durch seine Artikel, Vorträge und Blogbeiträge ein gefragter Experte zu diesem Thema. Zuletzt erschien von ihm «Salafismus. Auf der Suche nach dem wahren Islam» (Hrsg. mit Hazim Fouad, 2014).

    Abstract: Taiwan—together with India, Japan and South Korea—is one of only four consolidated Asian democracies. Democratizing Taiwan provides the most comprehensive analysis of Taiwan's peaceful democratization including its past violent authoritarian experiences, leadership both within and outside government, popular protest and elections, and constitutional interpretation and amendments. Using extensive field research including the conduct of many interviews with government and party leaders, journalists, academics and a wide variety of citizens over many years as well as substantial research into documents, newspapers and academic research, Professor Jacobs provides many new insights into Taiwan's democratization. He also analyses areas in which Taiwan continues to face difficulties

    Abstract: This is the first time that indigenous Papuan administrators share with an international public their experiences governing their country. These administrators were the brokers of development. After graduating from the School for Indigenous Administrators (OSIBA) they served in the Dutch administration until 1962. The period 1962-1969 stands out as turbulent and dangerous, and for many curtailed their professional careers. These administrators' having been in active service until their retirement in the early 1990s allows for a complete recounting of political and administrative transformations under the Indonesian governance of Irian Jaya/Papua. This book brings together 17 oral histories of the everyday life of Papuan civil servants, including their relationships with superiors and colleagues, the murder of a Dutch administrator, their translation of 'development' to the Papuan people, the organization of their first democratic institutions, and the actual political and economic conditions leading up to the so-called Act of Free Choice. Finally, they share their experiences in the UNTEA and Indonesian government organization. Leontine Visser is Professor of Development Anthropology at Wageningen University. Her research focuses on governance and natural resources management in eastern Indonesia

    Abstract: Die Rolle und Stellung der muslimischen Frau wird im Westen größtenteils kritisch betrachtet und gibt immer wieder Anlass für kontroverse Diskussionen, die aber nicht immer auf profundem Hintergrundwissen basieren. Irene Schneider ist Professorin für Arabistik und Islamwissenschaft mit dem Forschungsschwerpunkt Geschlechterforschung und beschreibt auf Grundlage fundierter Quellen die Stellung und die Rechte der Frau im islamischen Kontext. Sie beginnt mit einem historischen Rückblick, erläutert anhand zahlreicher Zitate die Auslegung des Korans und Hadithe und geht auf die heutige Rechtslage ein. Gleichzeitig wirft sie einen Blick auf die derzeitige gesellschaftliche Situation in muslimischen als auch westlichen Ländern. Dabei wird deutlich, dass das Thema facettenreich ist und Problemstellungen aus verschiedenen Perspektiven betrachtet werden müssen. Ein insgesamt wissenschaftlich neutraler Überblick, der aufgrund der Fülle detaillierter Informationen eine intensive Auseinandersetzung mit dem Stoff voraussetzt, aber durch die Aktualität des Themas für eine breite Leserschaft von Interesse ist.     Abstract: The existing literature on Chinese Indonesians has so far tended to take an approach of either victimization and marginalization or a focus on elite businessmen and their economic influence. This volume takes a different perspective. The Chinese in Indonesia were not only innocent victims of history, but were simultaneously active agents of change. Chinese Indonesians from different walks of life played an active role in shaping society during regime changes and found creative and constructive ways to deal with situations of adversity. This book demonstrates that regime changes in Indonesia did not only pose threats of violence, but also offered opportunities that induced “agency” on the part of Chinese Indonesians to shape their own destinies and that of the country

    Abstract: Die Volksrepublik China hat 1,3 Milliarden Einwohner. Davon gehören 8,4 % zu 55 nationalen Minderheiten. Sie bewohnen 60 % des Staatsgebietes - insbesondere in den strategisch wichtigen Grenzregionen. Nach einem längeren historischen Überblick der staatlichen Nationalitätenpolitik "zwischen Sinisierung und Diskriminierung" stellt Klemens (siehe vom selben Autor: "Dalai Lama", BA 6/08) diese Völker, die er in mehrere Gruppen einteilt (tibeto-birmanisch, mongolisch, tungusisch etc.), einzeln vor. Bei den Tibetern und Uiguren finden sich längere Darlegungen auch zur zentralstaatlichen Repression und zum Widerstand gegen Beijing. Die meisten anderen ethnischen Gruppen, die zum Teil sehr knapp porträtiert werden, sind inzwischen sinisiert oder akzeptieren die Vorherrschaft der Han-Chinesen. Es folgt ein abschließender Artikel zur Renaissance religiöser Gemeinschaften. Klemens plädiert für eine tolerante Nationalitätenpolitik, bei der den Minderheiten Sonderautonomie-Rechte gewährt werden. Nur so könnten sezessionistische Bewegungen wirksam geschwächt werden, ohne Minderheitenrechte zu verletzen. (2 S) (Andreas Ufen)

Schmidt behandelt sowohl die strukturellen und normativen Voraussetzungen (Verfassung) als auch die handelnden Akteure im politischen System. - Wähler, Interessengruppen/Verbände und Medien. Besonderen Wert legt er auf die Darstellung der politischen Willensbildung in einzelnen Politikfeldern. Sehr verdienstvoll ist zudem die Beschreibung der Regierungspraxis im Wechselspiel zwischen Verfassungsorganen, öffentlicher Meinung und Lobbyismus. Aktuelle Entwicklungen (Föderalismusreform, 2. Grosse Koalition) finden Berücksichtigung. Im Umfeld von Hochschulen, aber auch für die gymnasiale Oberstufe als Lehrbuch einsetzbar. Sehr empfohlen. (2 S)

    Abstract: Selbst in einer Demokratie können wir lückenlos beobachtet werden, behauptet W. Sofsky (zuletzt ID 51/05) und beklagt, dass diese Gefahr kaum zur Kenntnis genommen wird, da der Zeitgeist alles zum Politikum erklärt habe und Bekanntheit höher geschätzt werde als Privatheit. Diese wird, nicht zuletzt auch durch Konformismus, Fügsamkeit, Macht der Gewohnheit, Trägheit, Feigheit, Gleichgültigkeit jedes einzelnen und durch das Machtstreben des Staates immer mehr zerstört. Sofsky malt die Risiken in grellen Farben aus, wirft einen Blick auf vergangene Diktaturen und beschreibt die Reservate des Individuums, zu denen auch die Freiheit gehört, religiös oder nicht religiös zu sein. Viele richtige Gedanken werden, wie in einer Streitschrift üblich, apodiktisch und polemisch vorgetragen. Aber: Sofsky übertreibt sein Misstrauen gegenüber dem Staat und verkennt dessen positive Funktion. Würden wir tatsächlich so kontrolliert und überwacht, wie er suggeriert, dann gäbe es keine Gewalt in der Ehe und keine misshandelten Kinder in den Familien, von denen fast tagtäglich die Medien berichten. Jahrhunderts haben die Entstehung der heutigen baltischen Staaten ermöglicht. Ralph Tuchtenhagen schildert die politischen, wirtschaftlichen, sozialen und kulturellen Entwicklungen, welche die EU-Staaten bis heute prägen.
    Abstract: Die Länder Estland, Lettland und Litauen als Staatsverbände der jeweiligen "Titularnation" existieren seit 1918 bzw. wieder seit 1991; seit dem Mittelalter hatten die Völker zwischen Finnischem Meerbusen und Memelfluss teils nacheinander, teils gleichzeitig unter deutscher und dänischer, polnischer und schwedischer sowie russischer (bis 1918) und schließlich (seit 1940) sowjetischer Herrschaft gelebt. Der in Hamburg lehrende Nordeuropa-Historiker bietet einen reihenüblich knappen, chronologisch gegliederten, gut lesbaren Überblick schwerpunktmäßig über die politische Geschichte jener Region im Nordosten Europas. Mit ausführlicher, aber klein gedruckter Zeittafel, Karten, Literaturverzeichnis und Register.

    Abstract: Der Band (mehr noch als "Deutsche und Polen", BA 12/92) hat fast enzyklopädische Ausmaße. Die 80 Beiträge von tschechischen und deutschen Wissenschaftlern und Politikern beziehen sich nicht allein auf "Geschichte, Kultur, Politik", auch auf Wirtschaft, Alltag, Ideologie - fast zuviel des Guten, zumal öfter nur gewaltsam oder gar nicht Parallelen von tschechischer und deutscher Entwicklung thematisiert werden (so bei Betrachtungen über die Caféhaus-Kultur, Fensterstürze, Einwanderungspolitik - abgehandelt am Beispiel der Türken). Meist aber gelingt das Herausarbeiten der spezifischen Bezüge gut, so beim vergleichenden Nachdenken über Feminismus oder Kafkas Verhältnis zu Prag und Berlin. Eine wahre Fundgrube (nach der Devise "für jeden etwas") für am Nachbarland Interessierte, auch Touristen. Nutzbar zugleich - mit "Tschechien, der ferne Nachbar" (BA 8/99) - als Speziallexikon (gut sortiertes Inhaltsverzeichnis, Personenregister), wenngleich der unter dem Patronat der Regensburger Uni entstandene Band auch öfter pathetisch-feierliche Grundtöne aufweist und "Schicksal" ziemlich häufig strapaziert.
