Abstract: Prior to World War II, psychology had three main missions: make the lives of all people fulfilling; identify and enhance human excellence; and treat pathology. In the last half-century, however, psychology has largely focused on decreasing maladaptive emotions and behaviors, while ignoring optimal functioning (e.g., character strengths and virtues). Psychologists have traditionally focused on the treatment of mental illness from a perspective of repairing damaged habits, damaged drives, damaged childhoods, and damaged brains. In recent years, however, many psychological researchers and practitioners have attempted to re-focus the field away from the study of human weakness and damage toward the promotion of well-being among individuals, families, and communities. This new movement within the field of psychology has been labelled Positive Psychology and its goal is to identify and enhance the human strengths and virtues that make life worth living ("The good life") and allow individuals and communities to thrive (Seligman & Csikszentmihalyi, 2000). Positive psychology is the scientific study of optimal experience. Several disciplines and sub disciplines that focus exclusively on issues associated with the field of positive psychology have emerged (APA's division of Psychological Study of Aesthetics, Creativity, and the Arts, APA's division of Psychology and Religion). In addition, several different professional journals and handbooks on positive psychology and healthy adjustment attest to the emergence of positive psychology as a recognized field. The number of positive psychology courses taught at both the graduate and undergraduate level nationally has increased dramatically in the past five years. One domain within the field of positive psychology is the study of religious faith as a human strength that has the potential to enhance the

Abstract: The 'proactionary principle' was introduced by transhumanists. Whereas precautionaries believe that we are on the brink on environmental catastrophe because we're too willing to take risks, proactionaries believe that humans stand apart from the rest of nature by our capacity for successful risk taking. In terms of current environmental problems, therefore, solutions lie not in turning our backs on our love affair with technology but by intensifying it – through finding new energy sources or even looking at the possibility of inhabiting other worlds. In this fascinating new book, Steve Fuller and Veronika Lipinska explore attitudes towards the transformation of human nature. They point out that, politically, both those on the right and the left contribute to different sides of the precautionary-proactionary debate, and argue that it will be this distinction, between caution and action, that will come to dominate the political landscape and create new political divisions. Drawing on perspectives from both theology and biology, and completing a trilogy of works exploring 'Humanity 2.0', Fuller and Lipinska ultimately endorse the proactionary position, which supports individuals taking risks – for example with new health treatments, as they try to expand their life chances. They accept that such a risk-taking culture may result in set-backs and failures, but argue that this simply requires a new conception of the welfare state. The results may be an incredibly diverse society that will challenge our notions of tolerance, creating a world where 'traditional' humans live side by side with those who have artificial organs or have received substantial genetic modification. Humans have yet to treat all 'normal' members of Homo sapiens with proper respect and dignity and the proactionary principle opens up new challenges to our conceptions of equality. The book ends with a Manifesto that draws together the arguments to present a challenging vision for the future.

Abstract: This Handbook examines core questions still remaining in the field of child maltreatment. It addresses major challenges in child maltreatment work, starting with the question of what child abuse and neglect is exactly. It then goes on to examine why maltreatment occurs and what its consequences are. Next, it turns to prevention, treatment and intervention, as well as legal perspectives. The book studies the issue from the perspective of the broader international and cross-cultural human experience. Its aim is to review what is known, but even more importantly, to examine what remains to be known to make progress in helping abused children, their families, and their communities

Abstract: "This book offers new and compelling insight into the emergent shared culture of the relationship between political actors and journalists in nine European democracies. It is a truly comparative account of the attitudes of 2,500 political communication elites between Helsinki and Madrid on various aspects of the media's role in politics and on the mutual relationship of politicians, political spokespersons and journalists. The study identifies national political communication cultures across Europe over the importance of journalists in advocacy and commentary, pressures on the media and perceived political influence. It also highlights that professional roles determine the perception of news-making, the interpretation of daily political life and the ethos of professional conduct and interaction. "--

It examines the tensions between formal and substantive rationality; between courses of action which are instrumentally rational and those which are formulated with particular cultural values in mind; between impersonal forces and creative impulses; between the logic of profit and the ambiguity of aesthetics; between a tendency to like what we are trained to like and affective or contrarian impulses. Simon Stewart argues that sociology can contribute to debates about aesthetic value and to an understanding of how people evaluate and seeks to contribute to alternative approaches that draw attention to other values and to other ways of valuing
Abstract: "This finely written book provides an excellent overview of culture from the sociological perspective. It outlines the theories of culture central to the discipline, and does so with clarity and sophistication. It should be of great use to both students and specialists."- John Carroll, Professor of Sociology, La Trobe University, Australia "In this carefully written book, Stewart embarks on a creative exploration of the work of leading theorists of social organization and culture to probe the interconnections between taste, value, and globalization. Readers will be thoroughly engaged by this comprehensive and original integration that breaks new ground for the discipline."- Denise Bielby, Professor of Sociology, University of California, US

Abstract: Research about children and young people's participation and involvement in research is an emerging area of academic inquiry. Based on the themes of participation, citizenship and intergenerational relations, this edited collection draws on the latest research in this area, and includes chapters co-authored with children and young people, In 2012, over 200 academics who are active in international childhood and youth research gathered together alongside young people for a unique ICYRNet conference where they debated and discussed participatory approaches. Participation, Citizenship and Intergenerational Relations in Children and Young People's Lives continues the dialogue between young people and adults that started then. This edited collection draws together work from six countries about participatory research and intergenerational relations. Adopting participatory techniques, the editors worked with children and young people to co-author three chapters that each reflect young people's interpretations of three chapters written by adults. This provides a unique insight into how children and young people view research which is about them as well as highlighting their perspectives on research which resonates with their own life experiences. The book includes reference to a wealth of supplementary visual and audio materials which are available on the conference website at www.dvigc.com

Abstract: This book explores continuity and change in British multiculturalism. It offers an original perspective on British multiculturalism and also presents an exploration of the politics of ethnic diversity in all the national contexts of the British Isles as well as the United Kingdom, This book presents a detailed exploration of continuity and change in the British debates and policies relating to ethnic diversity since 9/11, focusing in particular on key policy areas which include the prevention of terrorism and citizenship, forced marriage, and the resentment of the 'white working class'. It offers an original perspective, which assesses the evolution of multiculturalism as a policy guideline in the United Kingdom and suggests that, while the rhetoric of multiculturalism has been toned down by successive governments since 2001, British debates and policies have continued to reflect a specific sensitivity to ethnic diversity

Abstract: This comprehensive, state-of-the-art reference work provides the first systematic review to date of how sociologists have studied the relationship between race/ethnicity and educational inequality over the last thirty years in eighteen different national contexts, This authoritative, state-of-the-art reference work provides the first systematic review to date of how sociologists have studied the relationship between race/ethnicity and educational inequality in eighteen different national contexts: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Cyprus, Finland, France, England, Germany, Ireland, Japan, Russia, South Africa, the Netherlands and the USA. Using a similar, comprehensive literature review methodology, national experts critically review how sociologists have studied race and ethnic inequalities in education over the last thirty years. The analysis focuses on the main research traditions that developed over time and their relationships with developments in social policy and social thought. This book ultimately integrates the findings of the national reviews and maps out new directions for future research. Additionally, the editors explore how national contexts of race/ethnic relations shape the character and content of educational inequalities. Global in its perspective and definitive in content, this one-stop volume will be an indispensable reference resource for a wide range of academics, students and researchers in the fields of education, sociology, race and ethnicity studies and social policy

Abstract: "This book explores the role of children and young people within early modern England's most controversial minority: Catholicism. It examines Catholic attempts to capture the next generation, Protestant reactions to these initiatives, and the religious, social, legal and political contexts in which young people formed, maintained and attempted to explain their religious identity. The young, it argues, were not inevitably pawns in a world governed by hierarchies of kinship, workplace, church and state. The motives and even the voices of those who challenged various manifestations of authority in the early modern world can often be recovered, and the choices they made tell us much about the complex and changing relationships between society, church and state in the post-Reformation world"--

Abstract: The abuses and atrocities committed against indigenous populations during the colonial era are coming back to haunt the old imperial powers. As the idea of retributive justice becomes increasingly popular, former colonizing countries such as Britain, Spain, and the Netherlands are being held to account, through lawsuits and national apologies, for crimes they committed against native populations, requiring them to confront some of the grimmer aspects of their imperial pasts. This comparative study explores attitudes toward the existence of German, Spanish, American, and British concentration camps at the turn of the 19th Century. Through a critical genealogical study of these camp cultures, this text explores how imperialists and anti-imperialists have justified and condemned these camps and analyzes the continued debate on their legality, legitimacy, and necessity. Crucially, the study looks at current disputes between those who wish to revive memories of the struggles faced by Cuban guerillas, the Boers, and the Herero and Nama communities who were the victim of such horrendous atrocities and those who against calls for restorative justice for these crimes

Abstract: In the 21st Century, a perfect storm appears to have engulfed many of Britain's most important institutions. The list of those it has enveloped is extensive, but headline acts would include - the banking sector for malpractice, Parliament for its expenses scandal, the media for phone-hacking and the police for duplicity and corruption. It raises a fundamental question of whether there is an endemic and fundamental crisis in British political, economic and social institutions or instead simply a set of contingent events that have been discursively constructed and presented as a collective crisis. This volume offer the first major, wholesale consideration of the extent to which a crisis of legitimacy has taken root in Britain's key institutions. It does so by exploring the nature of crisis across a diverse range of institutions, assessing the accuracy of the 'crisis' label and crucially considers whether a set of shared underlying pathologies exist that has led to a point of collective crisis and the need for fundamental renewal

Abstract: Why have the minutiae of how parents raise their children become routine sources of public debate and policy making? This book provides in-depth answers to these features drawing on a wide range of sources from sociology, history, anthropology and psychology, covering developments in both Europe and North America, Why do we live at a time when the minutiae of how parents raise their children - how they feed them, talk to them, play with them or discipline them - have become routine sources of public debate and policy making? Why are there now so-called 'parenting experts', and social movements like Attachment Parenting, telling us that 'science says' what parents do is the cause of and solution to social problems? Parenting Culture Studies provides in-depth answers to these features of contemporary social life drawing on a wide range of sources from sociology, history, anthropology, psychology and policy studies to do so, covering developments in both Europe and North America. Key chapters cover the 'intensification of parenting', the rise of the 'parenting expert', the politicizing of parent-child relationships, and the weakening of bonds between generations. Five essays detail contemporary examples of obsessions with parenting, discussing drinking and pregnancy, attachment theory, neuroscience and family policy, fathering, and 'helicopter parenting'. The Introduction situates parental determinism in the wider context of risk consciousness and the demise of social confidence about how to approach the future. Comprehensive in scope and accessibly written, this book will be an indispensable resource for students, researchers, policy-makers and parents seeking a deeper understanding of the debates surrounding parenting and society today
Abstract: "The authors of this timely collection are in the forefront of analyses of contemporary parenting. The discourses and practices of parenting are rarely held up for sustained critique. Readers of this book will be challenged to question the politics and rationales of parenting cultures in this provocative and cogently argued book." - Deborah Lupton, University of Sydney, Australia

Abstract: This book provides the first comprehensive collection of topics that lie within the intersection of positive psychology and multicultural issues. Written by leaders in the field and using a broad definition of culture (including race, ethnicity, socioeconomic or social class status, disability status, religion/spirituality, sexual orientation, and gender), this book reviews relevant research, theory, and suggestions for practice and highlights the importance of considering context within a strengths-based framework. Beginning with a history of the intersection of multiculturalism and positive psychology and issues related to measurement and methodology, the volume proceeds to specific examples of current research in multiple areas of cultural identity. Finally, domains (e.g., school, work, psychotherapy) in which the findings of this work can be applied are described, as are directions for future theory and research in this area. This volume is aimed at students, scholars, and practitioners across several fields including multicultural psychology, positive psychology, counseling and clinical psychology, school psychology, social psychology, as well as marriage and family counseling, and social work. It will serve as an important reference to any who are interested in learning about the intersection of positive psychology and multiculturalism

Abstract: Schools are unique places. They pay a central role in the formation of young people. The importance of how young people are educated and how they are encouraged to live and learn cannot be underestimated. This book advocates for the fostering of agency not only amongst school personnel but also amongst younger generations for health and sustainability. Abstract: This book offers an exciting new perspective on the origins of language. Language is conceptualized as a collective invention, on the model of writing or the wheel, and the book places social and cultural dynamics at the centre of its evolution: language emerged and further developed in human communities already suffused with meaning and communication, mimesis, ritual, song and dance, alloparenting, new divisions of labour and revolutionary changes in social relations. The book thus challenges assumptions about the causal relations between genes, capacities, social communication and innovation: the biological capacities are taken to evolve incrementally on the basis of cognitive plasticity, in a process that recruits previous adaptations and fine-tunes them to serve novel communicative ends. Topics include the ability brought about by language to tell lies, that must have confronted our ancestors with new problems of public trust; the dynamics of social-cognitive co-evolution; the role of gesture and mimesis in linguistic communication; studies of how monkeys and apes express their feelings or thoughts; play, laughter, dance, song, ritual and other social displays among extant hunter-gatherers; the social nature of language acquisition and innovation; normativity and the emergence of linguistic norms; the interaction of language and emotions; and novel perspectives on the time-frame for language evolution. The contributors are leading international scholars from linguistics, anthropology, palaeontology, primatology, psychology, evolutionary biology, artificial intelligence, archaeology, and cognitive science.

Abstract: "Mobbing is a destructive social process in which individuals, groups, or organizations target a person for ridicule, humiliation, and removal from the workplace. It can lead to deteriorating physical and mental health, workplace violence, and even suicide. Studies indicate that as many as 37% of American workers have experienced workplace abuse at some time in their working lives. Overcoming Mobbing is an informative, comprehensive guidebook written for the victims of mobbing and their families who often can't make sense of the experience or mobilize resources for recovery. In an engaging, reader-friendly style, the book distinguishes mobbing from bullying in that it takes place within organizational or institutional settings and involves organizational dynamics. Mobbing is not about the occasional negative experience at work; it is ongoing negative acts, both overt and covert, over time, that erode workers' confidence in themselves and in their workplaces and that no amount of sophistication or maturity can make sense of. Duffy and Sperry, leading authorities on this special type of aggression, provide effective strategies for recovery from mobbing as well as for prevention, and they demystify the experience through the use of case vignettes. More than a simple self-help book, this volume brings the concept and terminology relating to mobbing into the public vocabulary by virtue of its strong foundation in psychological and organizational research. It offers a detailed presentation of the causes and consequences of mobbing, helps readers avoid falling into the trap of misplacing blame, and holds organizations at the center of responsibility for preventing the abuse. In addition to those who have experienced mobbing themselves, this book is an invaluable resource for workplace managers and human resources personnel who wish to prevent or reverse mobbing within their own professional settings"--

Abstract: This volume offers a panoramic and interdisciplinary view of the growing field of Sports Mega-Event studies. Contributions explore leveraging strategies and the legacies from previous sports megas (London, Seoul, Sydney, Vancouver) and recent and future 'emerging' states and their hosting strategies (India, China, Qatar, Russia, Brazil), Have you ever wondered why states invest so heavily in sports mega-events? Ever considered who benefits from these (mostly publicly financed) 'mega' events? Part of the rationale of this edited collection is to go beyond the positive discourse that attends sports 'megas'. The volume of essays from a stellar international cast of experts offers a panoramic and interdisciplinary view of the growing field of Sports Mega-Event studies. The contributions cover discussion of the key concepts and debates in cutting-edge research, examples of leveraging strategies and the legacies from previous sports megas (such as London, Seoul, Sydney, Vancouver) and examples and analyses of recent and future 'emerging' states and their hosting strategies (such as India, China, Qatar and Russia)
Abstract: "International sports mega-events and their legacies are much debated features of contemporary culture. In this book many of the main writers in the field provide valuable new and accessible studies of this phenomenon. This book deserves to be widely read." -Maurice C. Abstract: Contemporary culture offer contradictory views of the internet and new media technologies, painting them in extremes of optimistic enthusiasm and pessimistic concern. This book explores such representations, uncovering the roots of our cultural responses to the internet, centred upon a profoundly ambivalent reaction to technological modernity, Contemporary culture offer contradictory views of the internet and new media technologies, painting them in extremes of optimistic enthusiasm and pessimistic foreboding. While some view them as a repository of hopes for democracy, freedom and self-realisation, others consider these developments as sources of alienation, dehumanisation and danger. This book explores such representations, and situates them within the traditions of utopian and dystopian thought that have shaped the Western cultural imaginary. Ranging from ancient poetry to post-humanism, and classical sociology to science fiction, it uncovers the roots of our cultural responses to the internet, which are centred upon a profoundly ambivalent reaction to technological modernity. Majid Yar argues that it is only by better understanding our society's reactions to technological innovation that we can develop a balanced and considered response to the changes and challenges that the internet brings in its wake

Abstract: Port cities have distinctive global dynamics, with long histories of casual labour, large migrant communities, and international trade networks. This in-depth comparative study examines contradictory global legacies across themes of urban identity, waterfront work and radicalism in key post-industrial port cities worldwide, This book advances the concept of 'global legacies' - enduring forms, processes, or ideas of the 'global' that shape urban identity and politics. Global legacies provide a key lens on the difficult pasts and uncertain futures of cities. In particular, port cities, with their distinctive global dynamics, long histories of casual labour, large migrant communities, and roles within international trade networks, exhibit fascinating global legacies. Employing a rich methodological repertoire, Alice Mah combines approaches from critical political economy, global history and sociology, and ethnographic case study methods in this comparative study. The result is a careful examination of the contradictory legacies of empire, capitalism, casual labour, and radicalism in Liverpool, Marseille, and New Orleans. These major port cities faced painful processes of ruination followed by attempts at recovery in the recent past. This book reveals that while global legacies are fraught and contradictory, they also offer a framework of possibilities and resources for imagining alternative urban futures
Abstract: "What becomes of once-preeminent world harbors when a new global age relegates them to the minor leagues of seaports? In this rich and imaginative joining of Liverpool, Marseille, and New Orleans, two mere shadows of their former glories, a third a troubled giant, Alice Mah ranges across waterfront developments, museum projects, crime stories, and traditions of radical action to capture their quest for a return to greatness amidst the need to confront a conflicted past and a dubious future." - Michael B. Miller, Professor of History, University of Miami, USA "Transformation along waterfronts in port cities has been analysed through many case studies. This book offers a new comparative and cross-disciplinary approach. It focuses on how labour can create a specific port identity and provide new perspectives of transformation, which can include heritage for developing a more modern image for port cities in the future." - Dirk Schubert, Professor of Urban Planning, HafenCity University Hamburg, Germany "Alice Mah's sensitively written and deftly researched study explores Liverpool, Marseille and New Orleans as these port cities of 'the first global age' face the complex challenges of redevelopment, restructuring and recovery. Moving between the realms of cultural representation, histories of labour solidarity and struggle, and contested futures, the book traces the tangled lines that lead from legacies of empire, colonialism and slavery, through decline and ruination to a new urban politics of hope." - Fran Tonkiss, Director, Cities Programme, London School of Economics, UK

Abstract: This book compares understandings and experiences of love and intimacy of one distinct cultural group - Gujarati Indians - born and brought up in two different countries. In a rapidly globalizing world, this comparative ethnographic study explores how the context in which we are brought up shapes our most intimate attachments and family lives, One of the first of its kind, this book compares understandings and experiences of love and intimacy of one distinct cultural group - Gujarati Indians - born and brought up in two different countries. Using in-depth ethnographic fieldwork with middle-class Gujaratis aged between 20 and 30 years of age, it explores their relationship ideals and early experiences of marriage formation. It shows how discourses on what it means to be modern have interacted with pervasive ongoing status ideologies in both the UK and India. In bringing together the findings from both contexts, the book addresses the connections between intimacy, class, globalisation and kinship. Young Gujaratis are concerned not only with global ideals of 'companionate marriage', but also with national and local ideologies of what constitutes a 'respectable' middle-class marriage and family ideal. Such ideals shape not only practices of courtship and relationships, but the very experiences of love and desire

Abstract: Contributors address questions about gender equality in a Confucian context across a wide and varied social policy landscape, from Korea and Taiwan, where Confucian culture is deeply embedded, through China, with its transformations from Confucianism to communism and back, to the mixed cultural environments of Hong Kong and Japan, Is a Confucian cultural climate hostile to gender equality in families and public decision-making? What is the impact of gender equality legislation in East Asia? Approaches to these welfare regimes have ignored gender, while gendered accounts of welfare have neglected East Asia. Comparisons with Western welfare states show strong economies with life expectancy in Japan and South Korea above those of Western social democracies but in contrast there are extremely large gender gaps in employment, earning, unpaid work and parliamentary representation and conjoined with this low fertility rates and and minimal public social spending on childcare and early education. In this volume, contributors address questions about gender equality in a Confucian context across a wide and varied social policy landscape, from Korea and Taiwan, where Confucian culture is deeply embedded, through China, with its transformations from Confucianism to communism and back, to the mixed cultural environments of Hong Kong and Japan. Overall, the collections asks: Has East Asia's rapid economic transformation been accompanied by social and cultural transformation?

Building on Parson's distinction between social, cultural, personal and organismic systems, it presents a four-dimensional scheme that aims to identify modernity's key structural components. Each dimension is explored in turn, highlighting different aspects of the modern condition. While focusing on universal features, the scheme leaves ample room for capturing cross-regional diversity. A highly interdisciplinary work, this book brings together insights from many different fields including sociology, political science, cultural studies, social psychology, and historiography, and integrates them in an illuminating, original manner. The key argument is that we have entered a new phase of global, polycentric modernity which brings to a close several centuries of Western world domination and gives rise to a new world order
Abstract: "To say this book is impressive would be an understatement. It gets at the heart of a matter that is central to the social sciences and that has been discussed for a long time. Highly thoughtful and extremely well written, the book combines a wealth of insights from a multitude of sources and disciplines. It thereby makes a major, fascinating contribution to our understanding of the contemporary world. A must read for anyone interested in social theory today." - Zaheer Baber, Professor of Sociology, University of Toronto, Canada "One of the most rewarding books I've read in years, Global Modernity. A Conceptual Sketch offers a tour de force that can stand as a benchmark for future discussions of the subject. Its ideas are original and authoritative, well-formulated, and wondrously usable. The author treats major contributors to the debate on modernity deftly, respectfully, and creatively - thereby manifesting a kind of civilized inquiry that is regrettably rare in academic discourse. Overall, I find Volker Schmidt's book to be one of the very few statements in general sociological theory today worthy engaging with seriously." - Donald N. Levine, Peter B. Abstract: This book examines parenting in an unequal society and questions whether it is a key mechanism through which poverty translates into underachievement and reduced life chances in children, Western societies face many challenges. The growing inequality and the diminishing role of the welfare state and the rapid accumulation of the resources of a finite planet at the top 1% have made the world an inhospitable place to many families. Parents are left alone to deal with the big societal problems and reverse their impact on their children's educational achievement and life chances. The 'average' working family is sliding down the social ladder with a significant impact on children's learning and wellbeing. We now know that parental involvement with children's learning (although important in its own right) is not the primary mechanism through which poverty translates to underachievement and reduced social mobility. Far more relevant to children's learning and emotional wellbeing is their parents' income and educational qualifications. The mantra of 'what parents do matters' is hypocritical considering the strong influence that poverty has on parents and children. We can no longer argue that we live in a classless society, especially as it becomes clear that most governmental reforms are class based and affect poor families disproportionately. In this book, Dimitra Hartas explores parenting and its influence on children's learning and wellbeing while examining the impact of social class amidst policy initiatives to eradicate child poverty in 21st Century Britain
Abstract: "This is a powerful, persuasive and extremely important book. Dimitra Hartas forensically demolishes core presumptions underpinning contemporary parenting policy through a trenchant and compelling analysis of the evidence. This myth busting, ground-breaking, text should be compulsory reading for politicians, policy makers and family practitioners." - Professor Val Gillies, London South Bank University, UK

Abstract: This book provides a historically-informed survey critically outlining sociological, psychological, political, and economic approaches to the role of public intellectuals. Sassower suggests how the state might financially support the essential work of public intellectuals so as to critically engage the public and improve public policies, Who are our public intellectuals? Are they needed in a democracy? Should the state underwrite their activities even if they end up, like Socrates, being gadflies? Shouldn't they refrain from public debates so as to retain their critical vantage point? These and other questions are answered in this historically-informed survey of the role of public intellectuals in western democracies. In addition to a taxonomy of the various labels and definitions of public intellectuals, this book outlines the competing, and at times complementary approaches that position intellectuals in the public sphere. Contemporary presentations of intellectual leaders are reviewed with a sample of interviews with intellectuals who are engaged in public debates. The book ends with a set of recommendations as to how the state might financially support the essential work of public intellectuals so as to critically engage the public and improve public policies

Abstract: Historically, bubbles have been understood primarily in financial-economic terms. In this exciting new work, Dholakia and Turcan argue that bubbles are also a socio-political and cultural phenomena, with intense and accelerating interactions of engineered hype and feverish expectations, Dholakia and Turcan present their interdisciplinary metatheory of bubbles with short case studies of minor and major bubbles. They comprehensively identify and exemplify constructs of the theory, set its temporal and contextual boundaries, and examine the underlying economic, psychological, and social dynamics assumptions, explaining how these elements are related. By doing so, they provide a partial window into the precarious nature of contemporary finance-driven capitalism and suggest some possible ways of overcoming the wrenching ups and downs of the prevalent system. The case studies and original research in Toward a Metatheory of Economic Bubbles have far-reaching implications for the study and practice of entrepreneurship and marketing, public and corporate finance, and public policies towards innovation, economy, and finance. It contributes to the defining issues for economic sociology that describe the relationship between the economic and the social

Abstract: This book examines Russia's 2013 anti-gay laws and their implications for the Sochi 2014 Olympics. Lenskyj argues that Putin's Russia and the International Olympic Committee wield power in similar ways, as evident in undemocratic governance, fraudulent voting processes, hypocrisy and absence of accountability, Sexual Diversity and the Sochi 2014 Olympics: No More Rainbows examines Russia's 2013 anti-gay laws and their implications for the Sochi 2014 Olympics. A century in the making, these laws reflect decades of sexual repression in the former Soviet Union. Despite societal changes since 1993, there is little acceptance of sexual diversity, and the 2013 anti-gay law has led to an increase homophobic violence. In its inadequate response to yet another human rights crisis in an Olympic host country, the International Olympic Committee relied on the myth that sport is apolitical. Once again, this strategy was successful. Magical thinking that sport unites the world led many critics to oppose an Olympic boycott, although some supported boycotts of sponsors' products. Helen Jefferson Lenskyj argues that Putin's Russia and the IOC are, in fact, well matched. Common features include undemocratic governance, fraudulent voting processes, hypocrisy and moral bankruptcy in leadership, homophobia, lesbian/gay invisibility, and promotion of 'sport-as-special' propaganda
Abstract: "Once again, Helen Lenskyj exposes the seamy side of the IOC and their friends the Games promoters and their preference for caviar and comforts over Human Rights, freedom of sexual orientation, and freedom of expression. She spotlights the hypocrisies and abuses that marred the Beijing Olympics and will blight Putin's Sochi showcase of 'traditional' Russian values." - Andrew Jennings, investigative journalist "In Sexual Diversity and the Sochi 2014 Olympics, Professor Helen Lenskyj rightly condemns the IOC for ignoring Russia's anti-gay legislation. The IOC's silence, Lenskyj laments, belies its claim of moral leadership and reaffirms its tradition of side stepping issues of social justice. Another sharp critique from this astute observer of the Olympic movement." - Professor Douglas Booth, Dean of School of Physical Education, Sport & Exercise Sciences, University of Otago, New Zealand

Abstract: Yar examines the autobiographies of fallen sports stars, exploring their fall from grace and the stigma it entails. Drawing upon sociological and criminological perspectives, it illuminates how fallen stars use confessional acts of story-telling to seek forgiveness, vindication and redemption, Today's sports stars are hailed as heroes and marketed as celebrities, but can also suffer disgrace in the face of scandals about doping. Such a fall from grace turns heroes and role-models into villains, and sees them labelled them as 'cheats', 'liars', dopers' and even 'criminals'. How do fallen stars respond to such stigma? Majid Yar suggests that these sports stars use autobiographical story-telling as a form of public performance, in an attempt to explain their transgressions and challenge the deviant labels that they have acquired. Drawing upon sociological and criminological perspectives, and centred upon Erving Goffman's account of self-presentation and identity, this fascinating study illuminates how five fallen stars, Lance Armstrong, Dwain Chambers, Tyler Hamilton, Marion Jones and Mark Millar, use confessional acts of story-telling to seek forgiveness, vindication and redemption
Abstract: "A highly readable account of the spectacular falls-from-grace of some of the most acclaimed sporting heroes of our time. Weaving sports stars' own accounts with classic sociological theory, Majid Yar offers fascinating insight into the stages that athletes caught doping go through: from stigma and spoiled identities, through neutralisation of their offences, to redemption and transcendence. Scholars of identity, drugs offences and crime in sport will all admire this book and students will be inspired by it for their own research projects. This is how to apply criminological theory!" - Yvonne Jewkes, University of Leicester, UK

Abstract: "In an arguably increasingly mobile world, mobilities are represented in society in many ways. There is a growing awareness that these representations not only help us understand the complexities of social relations in space but also produce society and space. There is also an increased interest in the adoption of research methodologies that are distinctly mobile. Simultaneously, the contested nature of representation is reflected in current discussions around the capacity for the practices of the mobile and sensuous body to be represented, as some movements are considered non-representable.This book engages with these debates, and, by exploring representations of mobilities in government policy, literature, visual arts, music, and in research, it examines the methodological potential of representations and the ways in which they co-produce mobilities"--

Abstract: This book approaches the field of positive psychology from a post-modern perspective. It explores the consequences of combining current trends and models with supplementary participatory and transformative methods. The book brings a more collective, qualitative, culturally sensitive and transformative approach to the processes of making sense and implementing the science of positive psychology. It moves beyond the individual level towards a “knowledge community” and “knowledge of the communities”. The book is an invitation to more participatory and polyphonic dialogues in the field of positive psychology.
