    Abstract: This book analyzes the coloniality of the concept of taste that gastronomy constructed and normalized as modern. It shows how gastronomy's engagement with rationalist and aesthetic thought, and with colonial and capitalist structures, led to the desensualization, bureaucratization and racialization of its conceptualization of taste. The Coloniality of Modern Taste provides an understanding of gastronomy that moves away from the usual celebratory approach. Through a discussion of nineteenth-century gastronomic publications, this book illustrates how the gastronomic notion of taste was shaped by a number of specifically modern constraints. It compares the gastronomic approach to taste to conceptualizations of taste that emerged in other geographical and philosophical contexts to illustrate that the gastronomic approach stands out as particularly bereft of affect. The book argues that the understanding of taste constructed by gastronomic texts continues to burden the affective experience of taste, while encouraging patterns of food consumption that rely on an exploitative and unsustainable global food system. This book will appeal to students and scholars interested in cultural studies, decoloniality, affect theory, sensory studies, gastronomy and food studies

    Abstract: In Semiotics of Rape, Rupal Oza follows the social life of rape in rural northwest India to reveal how rape is not only a violation of the body, but a language through which a range of issues—including caste and gender hierarchies, control over land and labor, and the shape of justice—are contested. Rather than focus on the laws governing rape, Oza closely examines rape charges to show how the victims and survivors of rape reclaim their autonomy by refusing to see themselves as defined entirely by the act of violation. Oza also shows how rape cases become arenas where bureaucrats, village council members, caste communities, and the police debate women`s sexual subjectivities and how those varied understandings impact the status and reputations of individuals and groups. In this way, rape gains meaning beyond the level of the survivor and victim to create a social category. By tracing the shifting meanings of sexual violence and justice, Oza offers insights into the social significance of rape in India and beyond.

African Immigrants in the United States: The Gendering Significance of Race? takes a closer look at the growth of African immigration to the United States in recent decades, as well as implications of this growth. Mamadi Corra highlights several resulting sociodemographic processes underway, including the changing composition of the foreign-born and US Black populations. Corra also takes a closer look at sociodemographic profiles of these "new African Americans" or "new Americans," highlighting the increasing diversity, yet also the racialized portrait of this group of immigrants. Key patterns discussed include the shifting racial and gender composition of immigrants, with a growing proportion of "Black" and female African immigrants on one hand and a decreasing proportion of "White" and male immigrants on the other hand. The book also compares socioeconomic profiles of African immigrants with other immigrant groups, as well as native-American subgroups. Taken together, Corra discovers that the salience of race that is mediated by gender.

Julia Böcker geht empirisch der Frage nach, unter welchen Bedingungen es gesellschaftlich als legitim gilt, das vorzeitige Ende einer Schwangerschaft als Tod und Verlust eines Kindes zu behandeln. Im Ergebnis steht die Rekonstruktion subjektiver Verlusterfahrungen im Kontext der kulturellen Ordnungen um körperliche Materialität, medizinisch (un)bestimmtes Leben und soziale Personalität. Deutlich werden der Umgang mit Wissensgrenzen und das Paradox einer subjektverantworteten Trauerkultur in der Gegenwart.

Since cost and tropical disease limited the deployment of British metropolitan troops to the region, British colonial rule in West Africa depended heavily on locally recruited soldiers and their families. This force became Britain's largest colonial army in Sub-Saharan Africa. West African Soldiers looks at the development of this colonial military from the conquest era of the late nineteenth century to decolonization in the 1950s. Rather than describing the many battles fought by this army both regionally and overseas, and informed by the concept of military culture, the book looks at the broad and overlapping themes of identity, culture, daily life, and violence. Chapter topics include the enslaved origins of the force, military identities including the myth of martial races, religious life, visual symbols like uniforms and insignia, health care related to tropical and sexually transmitted diseases, the experience of army wives, disciplinary flogging, mutiny, day-to-day violence committed by troops, and the employment of former soldiers by the colonial state. Based on archival research in five countries, the book derives inspiration from previous work on ordinary African soldiers in the British and German colonies of East Africa and in French West Africa.

    Abstract: People across the globe engage in social and solidarity economics to help themselves, their community, and society on their own terms. "Community Economies in the Global South" examines how people who conscientiously organize rotating savings and credit associations (ROSCAs) bring positive changes to their own lives as well as others. ROSCAs are a long-established and well documented practice, especially those organized by women of colour. Members make regular deposits to a fund as a savings that is then given in whole or in part to each member in turn based on group economics. This book spotlights women in Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia who organize and use these associations, composed of ordinary people belonging to similar class origins who decide jointly on the rules to suit the interests of their members. The case studies show how they vary greatly across countries in the Global South, demonstrating that ROSCAs are living proof that diverse community economies do exist and have been around for a very long time. The contributors recount stories of the self-help, activism, and perseverance of racialized people in order to push for ethical, community-focused business, and to hold onto local knowledge, grounded theory, and lived experience, reducing the need to rely on external funding as people find ways to finance sustainable, debt-free business ventures. The first collection on this topic edited by two women of colour with roots in the Global South, this volume is a rallying call to other scholar-activists to study and report on how racialized people come together, pool goods, and diversify business in the Global South.

    Abstract: Based on new evidence that challenges existing theories of urban inequality, Crankshaw argues that the changing pattern of earnings and occupational inequality in Johannesburg is better described by the professionalism of employment alongside high-levels of chronic unemployment.Central to this examination is that the social polarisation hypothesis, which is accepted by many, is simply wrong in the case of Johannesburg. Ultimately, Crankshaw posits that the post-Fordist, post-apartheid period is characterised by a completely new division of labour that has caused new forms of racial inequality. That racial inequality in the post-apartheid period is not the result of the persistence of apartheid-era causes, but is the result of new causes that have interacted with the historical effects of apartheid to produce new patterns of racial inequality.     Abstract: Analysing how water development projects unfolded in five rural communities in Mozambique, Emily Van Houweling offers an alternative perspective on water and the politicised nature of water management in the region. Using a hydro-social cycle framework, she demonstrates how water is tied to everyday life in matrilineal Nampula and how social relations, gender roles, and local politics were reconfigured during the project. While centring the experience of community members, Van Houweling also includes the perspectives of project implementers, showing how project plans were translated and negotiated as they worked their way down to the community. Employing the concept of organisational culture, Van Houweling reveals the tensions that resulted from different actors' decision-making processes and motivations, and illuminates possible explanations for the gaps between policy and practice. Exploring women's empowerment, community ownership, and participation, this book facilitates innovative ways for thinking about evaluation, sustainability, and gender-water relations.

    Abstract: Ob in der Antike, im Zweiten Weltkrieg oder im syrischen Bürgerkrieg: Invasoren setzen sexualisierte Gewalt gegen Frauen, Kinder und teilweise auch gegen Männer ein, um Gemeinschaften zu terrorisieren, zu demoralisieren und zu vertreiben sowie die eigene Macht zu demonstrieren. Die britische Journalistin und Kriegsreporterin Christina Lamb gibt Überlebenden eine Stimme. Eindrücklich schildern diese ihre schrecklichen Erlebnisse und verdeutlichen so den großen Aufklärungs- und Handlungsbedarf, den es hinsichtlich sexualisierter Gewalt in Kriegsgebieten gibt. Lamb reist für ihre Recherche um den Globus und spricht mit Überlebenden und ehrenamtlichen Helferinnen und Helfern in Asien, Afrika, Südamerika und Europa. Es wird deutlich, dass Vergewaltigungen und sexualisierte Gewalt nicht allein Begleiterscheinungen von Kriegen sind, sondern gezielt eingesetzt werden.
    Abstract: Das erschütternde Schicksal von Frauen in Kriegsgebieten wird gern übersehen, die Aufmerksamkeit gilt meist den Kämpfern an der Front. Dabei wird immer häufiger sexuelle Gewalt gegen Frauen systematisch als Kriegswaffe eingesetzt. Christina Lamb von der "Sunday Times" ist eine von ganz wenigen Kriegskorrespondentinnen. Seit Jahren bereist sie Krisengebiete wie Irak, Syrien, Nigeria und Myanmar und spricht mit den Frauen, Überlebenden, Geflüchteten über ihre Erfahrungen in Kriegszeiten: von Jesidinnen, die von IS-Kämpfern versklavt wurden, bis zur Ärztin im Kongo, die täglich Vergewaltigungsopfer versorgt. Ihnen will sie endlich eine Stimme geben und damit zugleich auf einen Missstand aufmerksam machen: Vergewaltigungen, die zur Massenvernichtungswaffe geworden sind, gehören endlich international geahndet!

    Abstract: "Elisa Giomi and Sveva Magaraggia propose that men engage in violent conduct at a higher rate than women because they are socially and culturally 'programmed' to do so. Popular culture representations play a crucial role in this process: TV series, films, pop music and videos, advertising commercials and tabloids all tend to 'normalise' violence against women as an allegedly natural inclination of males. Violent women, on the other hand, are believed to transgress both criminal and 'natural' laws, according to which they are supposed to give life, not death. By examining popular culture's depiction of men and women in their opposite, yet complementary, roles of perpetrators and victims, the authors show unexplored interconnections, namely that gender 'does' violence and violence 'does' gender.     Abstract: Aus der vom französischen Soziologen Bruno Latour eingeforderten Berücksichtigung der praktischen Disziplinen und ihrer Objekte lässt sich eine Neuausrichtung der Stadtsoziologie ableiten. Jessica Wilde zeigt auf, wie sich eine solche Soziologie von der menschlichen Gesellschaft als Fluchtpunkt sozialtheoretischen Denkens verabschiedet und sich programmatisch als Technik-, Stadtbau-, Architektur-, Planungs- und Designsoziologie neu aufstellt. Den urbanen Artefakten - vom Verkehrspoller bis zum Bebauungsplan - spürt sie dabei bis in die Werkstätten der planenden und gestaltenden Berufspraktiker*innen nach und macht die »Fabrikation der Stadt« zum Gegenstand soziologischen Forschens.

    Abstract: Die öffentlichen Bilder und Diskurse über die jüngsten Fluchtmigrationsbewegungen lösen im Kontext des europäischen Grenzregimes eine Art moralische Panik aus. Im Gegensatz dazu plädiert Frauke Schacht für eine Denkhaltung, aus der Menschen als handelnde Personen, als Expertinnen ihres eigenen Lebens in Erscheinung treten: Eine Haltung, die nicht nur die hegemoniale Normalität dekonstruiert, sondern neue Perspektiven auf marginalisierte Geschichten, alltägliche Erfahrungen und kreative (Über-)Lebensstrategien eröffnet. Damit liefert sie eine konzeptionelle Idee für eine zukünftige Forschung zum Thema Flucht, die die Perspektive der Flüchtenden ins Zentrum stellt.

    Abstract: Was macht eine Moschee aus? In ihrer Untersuchung der Strukturen und zentralen Angebote »Gebet«, »Bildung« und »öffentliche Veranstaltungen« gibt Veronika Rückamp Einblicke in das Alltagshandeln in Moscheen. Anhand qualitativer Interviews und Feldforschung in Zürich und Wien zeigt sie, dass sich Moscheen in einem Spannungsfeld zwischen sich wandelnden Mitgliedererwartungen und externen Einflüssen befinden und sich dabei immer wieder neu definieren müssen. Damit leistet sie einen wichtigen Beitrag, um Moscheen in der Schweiz und in Österreich jenseits von Integrationsfragen besser zu verstehen.

    Abstract: The smartphone is often literally right in front of our nose, so you would think we would know what it is. But do we? To find out, 11 anthropologists each spent 16 months living in communities in Africa, Asia, Europe and South America, focusing on the take up of smartphones by older people. Their research reveals that smartphones are technology for everyone, not just for the young. The Global Smartphone presents a series of original perspectives deriving from this global and comparative research project. Smartphones have become as much a place within which we live as a device we use to provide `perpetual opportunism`, as they are always with us. The authors show how the smartphone is more than an `app device` and explore differences between what people say about smartphones and how they use them.The smartphone is unprecedented in the degree to which we can transform it. As a result, it quickly assimilates personal values. In order to comprehend it, we must take into consideration a range of national and cultural nuances, such as visual communication in China and Japan, mobile money in Cameroon and Uganda, and access to health information in Chile and Ireland - all alongside diverse trajectories of ageing in Al Quds, Brazil and Italy.     Abstract: In the spring of 1973, the Baharvand tribe from the Luristan province of central western Iran prepared to migrate from their winter pastures to their summer camp in the mountains. Seasonal migration in spring and fall had been their way of life for as long as anyone in the camp could remember. They moved their camp and their animals—sheep, goats, horses, donkeys, and chickens—in order to find green pastures and suitable temperatures. That year, one migrating family in the tribe allowed an outsider to make the trip with them. Anthropology professor Frank Hole, accompanied by his graduate student, Sekandar Amanolahi-Baharvand, traveled with the family of Morad Khan as they migrated into the mountains. In this volume, Hole describes the journey, the modern and prehistoric sites along the way, and the people he traveled with.
