    Kurzfassung: This handbook provides a comprehensive account of the languages spoken in Ethiopia, exploring their structures and their function and use in society. It offers overviews of individual languages, many of them less documented, as well as detailed studies of specific aspects of language use in Ethiopia.
    Kurzfassung: "Ethiopia - a country in the Horn of Africa - hosts about 100 million people speaking more than eighty languages belonging to the Cushitic, Omotic, Nilo-Saharan, and Semitic languages families (CSA 2013: 28; Meyer & Richter 2003: 23-29; Eberhard, Simons & Fennig 2019). Speakers of these languages have been in contact for a long time resulting in widespread bi- and multilingualism and in the creation of regional and national lingua francas. Eventually, this situation yielded the Ethiopian Linguistic Area whose features are still open for ongoing discussion (see Crass & Meyer 2008). In 1991, the Ethiopian government established a policy promoting the use of all Ethiopian languages in primary education and local administration. Since then, research on Ethiopian languages has experienced an unprecedented expansion and has become a major field of study for the new generation of Ethiopian linguists (see Bulakh et al. 2019: 98-106). Despite the remarkable amount of research on individual Ethiopian languages, language groups and sociolinguistic topics over the last few decades, the most frequently cited general reference works on Ethiopian languages and linguistics still remain Bender et al. (1976a) and Bender (1976a), which obviously no longer represent the state of the art. These two works have remained easily available in Ethiopia and beyond over the last forty years, and are written in a very accessible descriptive-linguistic style so they are also frequently used by students of Ethiopian linguistics. Moreover, they combine information on sociolinguistic, historical linguistic, and applied linguistic issues with basic linguistic descriptions of Ethiopian languages. More recent handbooks, such as Kaye (1997; 2007), Hetzron (1997) or its second edition by Huehnergard & Pat-El (2019), and Weninger (2011a), focus only on Semitic languages, and thus lack information on the other language families found in Ethiopia. The Encyclopedia Aethiopica (Uhlig & Bausi 2003-2014) - the most up-to-date general reference work on Ethiopia - also contains information on Ethiopian languages but usually only in the form of very brief, fairly standardized entries that provide basic information on the phonology, morphology and syntax. Handbooks on African languages like Heine et al. (1981), Heine & Nurse (2000; 2008), Güldemann (2018), and Wolff (2019) also deal with various Ethiopian languages but do not provide a comprehensive description of them and their subgroups. Edzard (2012) and Frajzyngier & Shay (2012) deal with genetic and typological aspects of Afroasiatic and its major groups; Edzard (2012) also contains short grammatical descriptions of a very few languages. However, the language descriptions are very selective, and information on sociolinguistic issues is inadequate"--

Part I covers the key techniques and technologies used to study the neurobiology of language today. Part III covers the many facets of the articulate brain, and its capacity for language production: written, spoken, and signed. Questions regarding how the brain comprehends meaning, including emotions, at word and discourse levels are addressed in Part IV. The final Part V reaches into broader territory, characterizing and contextualizing the neurobiology of language with respect to more fundamental neuroanatomical mechanisms and general cognitive domains.

    Kurzfassung: Reference, the ability to refer to and pick out entities, is essential to human language and thought/cognition. The chapters in this volume attempt to provide a state of the art overview of this ability. The book is divided into two sections. The chapters in Part I, Foundations, are concerned with basic questions related to different types of referring expression and their interpretation. They address questions about the role of the speaker (including speaker intentions) and of the addressee, as well as the contribution of (the semantics of) the linguistic forms themselves, in establishing reference. They are also concerned with the nature of such concepts as definite and indefinite reference and specificity and the conditions under which reference may fail. The chapters in Part II, Implications and Applications, address questions about the acquisition of reference by children, and the processing of reference in the brain (neurolinguistics, psycholinguistics) as well as by machines, including robots (computational linguistics).

    Kurzfassung: This handbook is the first volume to provide a comprehensive, in-depth, and balanced discussion of ellipsis phenomena, whereby a perceived interpretation is fuller than would be expected based solely on the presence of linguistic forms. Natural language abounds in these apparently incomplete expressions, such as I laughed but Ed didn’t, in which the final portion of the sentence, the verb ‘laugh’, remains unpronounced but is still understood. The range of phenomena involved raise general and fundamental questions about the workings of grammar, but also constitute a treasure trove of fine-grained points of inter- and intralinguistic variation. The volume is divided into four parts. In the first, the authors examine the role that ellipsis plays and how it is analyzed in different theoretical frameworks and linguistic subdisciplines, such as HPSG, construction grammar, inquisitive semantics, and computational linguistics. Chapters in the second part highlight the usefulness of ellipsis as a diagnostic tool for other linguistic phenomena including movement and islands and codeswitching, while Part III focuses instead on the types of elliptical constructions found in natural language, such as sluicing, gapping, and null complement anaphora. Finally, the last part of the book contains case studies that investigate elliptical phenomena in a wide variety of languages, including Dutch, Japanese, Persian, and Finnish Sign Language.

    Kurzfassung: The Oxford Handbook of Taboo Words and Language defines taboo as a proscription of behaviour for a specifiable community of one or more persons at a specifiable time in specifiable contexts. What is in fact tabooed is the use of those words and language in certain contexts; in short, the taboo applies to instances of language behaviour. For behaviour to be proscribed it must be perceived as in some way harmful to an individual or their community but the degree of harm can fall anywhere on a scale from a breach of etiquette to out-and-out fatality. All tabooed behaviours are deprecated and they lead to social if not legal sanction. Taboos are described and the reasons and beliefs behind them are investigated.

    Kurzfassung: This book places tipping points in their scientific, economic, governmental, creative, and spiritual contexts. It seeks to offer a comprehensive set of interpretations on the meaning and application of tipping points. Its contribution focuses on the various characterisations and metaphors of tipping points, on the scope for anticipating their onset, the capacity for societal resilience in the face of their impending arrival, and for better ways of communicating and preparing societies, economies, and governments for accommodating them, and hence to turn them into responses which buffer and better human well-being. Above all, the possibility of preparing society for creative and benign "tips" is a unifying theme. The conclusion is sombre but not without hope. Thresholds of profound change can combine earth system-based relatively abrupt shifts with human-caused alterations of these disturbed patterns which, coupled together, produce more rapid onsets and greater tensions and stresses for governments and economies, as well as socially unequal societies. There is still time to predict and address these thresholds but too much delay will make the task of accommodation very difficult to achieve with relevant-scale community support. There are many examples of adaptive resilience throughout the world. These should be identified, supported, and emulated according to cultural acceptance and emerging economic realities. But there is no guarantee that the necessary adjustments can be made in time, as emerging patterns of outlook and governance do not appear to be conducive to manage the very awkward transitions of appropriate response.

Dance practices and attitudes about ethnicity have sometimes been the source of outright discord, such as when African Americans were - and sometimes still are - told that their bodies are "not right" for ballet, when Anglo Americans painted their faces black to perform in minstrel shows, when nineteenth-century Christian missionaries banned the performance of particular native dance traditions throughout much of Polynesia, and when the Spanish conquistadors and church officials banned sacred Aztec dance rituals. The Oxford Handbook of Dance and Ethnicity brings together scholars from across the globe to investigate what it means to define oneself in an ethnic category and how this category is performed and represented by dance as an ethnicity.
