    Abstract: Wie lässt sich das ambivalente Verhältnis zwischen Menschenrechtspolitik und Erinnerungskulturen fassen? Ein Beispiel dafür, dass kollektive Erinnerung an vergangene Gewalt ihrerseits Menschenrechte verletzen und neue Gewalt hervorbringen kann, statt sie einzudämmen, ist Indien. Michael Gottlob verdeutlicht die geschichtspolitischen Strategien, die die Konfrontation zwischen der hindunationalistischen Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) und der säkularen Kongresspartei (INC) prägen. Es zeigt sich: Der Streit um den Umgang mit der indischen Geschichte reicht tief in die Selbstverständigungsprozesse der Inder*innen unter dem Kolonialismus zurück.

    Abstract: "Das sowohl politische wie jüdische Opfer, das ich war und bin, kann nicht schweigen, wenn unter dem Banner des Anti-Zionismus der alte miserable Antisemitismus sich wieder hervorwagt." Jean Amérys Essays, die zwischen 1969 und 1976 geschrieben wurden, erschrecken geradezu durch ihre Aktualität. Sie lesen sich in ihrer Prägnanz, als wären sie für den heutigen Tag geschrieben. Ausgehend von seinem Judesein, das ihm von den Nürnberger Gesetzen aufgezwungen wurde, beschreibt Jean Améry seine existentielle Bindung an Israel, seine Solidarität ist jedoch nicht bedingungslos. Und doch ist für ihn Israel das Land, das allen entrechteten Juden der Welt den aufrechten Gang gelehrt hat. Hier spricht sein Schmerz, weil er, von jeher ein Linker, die Neue Linke, die Israel als kolonialistisch betrachtet, nicht mehr erreichen kann: Ihr selbstgerechter Antizionismus steht ihm als unausrottbarer Antisemitismus klar vor Augen.     Abstract: Die eigene Zeit als Kolonialmacht sei im Vergleich mit Ländern wie Frankreich oder Großbritannien kurz und relativ unproblematisch gewesen: So sah man es hierzulande lange. Doch das war ein Irrtum. Heute steht die deutsche koloniale Vergangenheit zu Recht im Zentrum kontrovers geführter Debatten über das koloniale Erbe in einer globalen Welt. Dieses Buch beleuchtet mit dem Auswärtigen Amt einen zentralen Akteur des deutschen Kolonialismus und spannt den Bogen vom Deutschen Kaiserreich bis weit ins 20. Jahrhundert hinein. Dabei richtet sich der Blick nicht nur auf Deutschland, sondern auch in die betroffenen Gesellschaften Afrikas, Asiens und Ozeaniens. Mit dem Versailler Vertrag von 1919 endete die formale deutsche Kolonialherrschaft. Doch koloniales Denken lebte in der Mitte der deutschen Ge sellschaft fort - so auch im Auswärtigen Amt, dem eine Mitverantwortung für Gewalt und Verbrechen in den deutschen Kolonien zukommt. Die Folgen seines Handelns sind noch bis in unsere Gegenwart spürbar. In der Zeit der NS-Diktatur verbanden sich nationalkonservative, monarchistische und antirepublikanische Haltungen im Auswärtigen Amt mit den expansionistischen und rassistischen Zielen des Nationalsozialismus. Ab 1949 prägten Indifferenz und Ignoranz, Passivität und Relativierung die bundesdeutsche Politik gegenüber den ehemaligen Kolonien im globalen Süden. Heute ist das Amt maßgeblich an Verhandlungen über Restitution und Wiedergutmachung beteiligt. Zudem wird es von einer diverser gewordenen deutschen Gesellschaft mit Fragen zur kolonialen Vergangenheit konfrontiert. Aus Gründen der historischen Gerechtigkeit, aber auch angesichts einer veränderten Weltlage muss sich das Amt seiner eigenen Kolonialgeschichte stellen

    Abstract: ""Local Responses to Global Challenges in Southeast Asia - A Transregional Studies Reader" is a collection of multidisciplinary essays, predominantly derived from papers presented at EuroSEAS 2019, the leading academic conference on Southeast Asian Studies, hosted by Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. It brings together a variety of scholars from Southeast Asia, Europe and North America, allowing for multiple flows and directionalities of knowledge productions and exchanges, be it between the Global South and North as well as within the Global South. The reader presents empirically-oriented, theoretically grounded analyses of local responses to global challenges such as knowledge-productions; notions and practices of building diverse communities; neo-populisms and contentious politics; resources and sustainability; urbanization; labor, livelihoods and mobilities. Each section starts with an introduction reviewing the state of the art. Authors will take cue from a transregional perspective understood as a distinct and alternative perspective on multi-lingual and transcultural spaces of contact, exchange and transfer. This includes a contextualization of phenomena in terms of diverse (cross) linkages and entanglements, including motilities on different scales, i.e. ranging from the local, regional to national and/or global levels. Container-based notions of place and space are addressed in a critical manner, where space and area are understood as notions beyond established systems of ordering and meta-geographies. A key goal is to allow for a consistent conceptual advancement of New Area Studies, which are critical, decentred, decolonial, diversified, and multi-disciplinary in nature"--

    Abstract: In this bold and provocative book, Damani J. Partridge examines the possibilities and limits of a universalized Black politics. Young people in Germany of Turkish, Arab, and African descent use claims of Blackness to hold states and other institutions accountable for their everyday struggle. Partridge tracks how these youth invoke the expressions of Black Power, acting out the medal-podium salute from the 1968 Olympics, proclaiming "I am Malcolm X," expressing mutual struggle with Muhammad Ali and Spike Lee, and standing with raised and clenched fists next to Angela Davis. Partridge also documents the demands by public-school teachers, federal-program leaders, and politicians that young immigrants account for the global persistence of anti-Semitism as part of the German state's commitment to antigenocidal education. He uses these stories to interrogate the relationships among European Enlightenment, Holocaust memory, and Black futures, showing how noncitizens work to reshape their everyday lives. In doing so, he demonstrates how the concept of Blackness energizes, inspires, and makes possible participation beyond national belonging for immigrants, refugees, Black people, and other People of Color.

    Abstract: Der Begriff des Widerspruchs umfasst sowohl Akte des Opponierens als auch Unvereinbarkeiten oder sich diametral gegenüberstehende Gegensätze. Er ist somit fester Bestandteil gesellschaftlicher Aushandlungsprozesse sowie wissenschaftlicher Forschung. Der Band vereint Beiträge zu politischen Karikaturen im 19. Jahrhundert, zum Kommunikationsverhalten von Nutzer:innen in den Sozialen Medien oder den widersprüchlichen Aspekten der Quantentheorie. Der Begriff Widerspruch kann sowohl eine private Unmutsäußerung als auch den rechtlich verankerten Einspruch bezeichnen, aber auch Unvereinbarkeiten oder sich diametral gegenüberstehende Gegensätze. Auf der gesellschaftlichen Ebene werden solche Konflikte und Aushandlungsprozesse in Protesten sichtbar, wie jüngst den Anti-Corona-Demonstrationen, oder in Petitionen und Online-Kampagnen, wie #metoo oder #blacklivesmatter. Widersprüche sind feste Bestandteile gesellschaftlicher Aushandlungsprozesse sowie wissenschaftlicher Forschung. Die Autor:innen zeigen die vielen Facetten des Begriffs auf und beleuchten diese hinsichtlich ihrer Potenziale, medialen Ausprägungen und Wirkungsformen.

    Abstract: Over the two decades since the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security, peacebuilding interventions around the globe have increasingly incorporated gender perspectives. Yet, the results have been uneven. In Building Peace, Rebuilding Patriarchy, Melissa Johnston explains why gender interventions often fail to help those who most need them, using the case of Timor-Leste, a country subjected to high levels of peacebuilding and gender interventions between 1999 and 2017. Looking at three types of gender interventions, Johnston makes the case that as peacebuilders seek to rebuild war-torn societies, understanding the intersection of social and gender order is more important than ever.

    Abstract: Racism is once again an issue in Germany. Few studies have addressed the changing manifestations of racism in West Germany and in post-1990 Germany. The essays in this collection trace an arc of continuity from post-1945 völkisch ideology to the beginnings of right-wing terrorism, to the consequences of legislation concerning foreigners, and to issues of identity politics.
    Abstract: Rassismus ist ein vieldiskutiertes Gegenwartsthema – doch die spezifisch deutschen Aspekte und Brüche in der jüngeren Geschichte des Phänomens sind noch kaum erforscht. Nach einer ausführlichen Skizze und Analyse der westdeutschen Rassismushistorie durch den Herausgeber nimmt der Band in chronologischer Gliederung exemplarische Facetten in den Blick. Die Beiträge schlagen einen Bogen von den Kontinuitäten völkischen Denkens nach 1945 und den Anfängen des Rechtsterrorismus hin zu den Fragestellungen, die das frühe 21. Jahrhundert betreffen. Analysiert werden u. a. das sich verändernde linke wie rechte Rassismus-Verständnis nach 1968, die Aporien der frühen Rassismus-Forschung und des Multikulturalismus, sowie die Ära der "völkischen Ekstase" nach der Wiedervereinigung. Brennende Asylbewerberunterkünfte und die NSU-Mordserie zeigten, wie virulent der Rassismus in Deutschland noch ist, der in den identitätspolitischen Debatten jüngst unter neuen Vorzeichen thematisiert wird.

    Abstract: Eigentlich könnte doch alles ganz einfach sein, oder? Antisemitismus und Rassismus sind beides menschenfeindliche Einstellungen, die von allen bekämpft werden müssen; die Kritik dieser Ideologien müsste deshalb stets zusammen geleistet werden. In der Praxis kommt es jedoch immer wieder zu Unvereinbarkeiten, handfesten Auseinandersetzungen und Grabenkämpfen, mit wechselseitigen Ausschlüssen, Relativierungen, Beschuldigungen und einem Klima des Argwohns. Hinzu kommt, dass die historischen und theoretischen Bezugnahmen von Rassismus- und Antisemitismuskritik sehr verschieden sind. "Frenemies" umzirkelt das Problemfeld, fragt nach den Gründen der Auseinandersetzungen, sucht nach Gemeinsamkeiten, ohne dabei Unvereinbarkeiten und Selbstansprüche der beiden Kritikformen zu relativieren. Das Buch versammelt kurze Texte von Forscher*innen, Bildungspraktiker*innen, Aktivist*innen, die jeweils als Antworten zu "naiven Fragen" dargestellt werden - in Form eines "FAQ". Was unterscheidet Antisemitismus und Rassismus? Gibt es Verbindungen zwischen Nationalsozialismus und Kolonialismus? Ist BDS antisemitisch? Sind Juden und Jüdinnen "weiß"? Wie werden diese Debatten in anderen Ländern geführt? Der Anspruch des Buches ist es, einen niedrigschwelligen Einstieg in ein komplexes, wenngleich sehr präsentes und konfliktreiches Themenfeld zu liefern.     Abstract: Verschwörungstheoretische und "alternativ-theologische" Deutungen sowie Negationen der Corona-Pandemie sind in Deutschland seit 2020 ungewöhnlich wirkmächtig; im "liberalen Milieu", das von der Evidenz medizinisch-naturwissenschaftlicher Expertisen überzeugt ist, sorgen sie für erhebliche Irritationen. Derart unterschiedliche Wahrnehmungen sind in Zeiten von Seuchen aber nicht neu. Dieser Sammelband beleuchtet solche Deutungskonkurrenzen erstmals in interdisziplinärer, epochenübergreifender Perspektive; die Beiträge fragen danach, unter welchen Bedingungen welche Deutungen Resonanz und Rezeption fanden, wie sich dies im Laufe der Zeit änderte und inwiefern dieser Wandel mit historischen Meistererzählungen (Modernisierung, Säkularisierung, Rationalisierung) korreliert oder kollidiert

    Abstract: Das Verhältnis zwischen Marxismus und Feminismus ist spannungsreich. Mit dem Bild der „unglücklichen Ehe“ hat die amerikanische Ökonomin Heidi Hartmann vor vielen Jahren problematisiert, dass in den marxistischen Analysen die Klassenfrage die Geschlechterfrage dominiert. Entsprechend zielt die feministische Auseinandersetzung mit der Marx’schen Theorie zum einen darauf, die Kapitalismuskritik um eine Patriarchatskritik zu erweitern und ihren wechselseitigen Herrschaftscharakter offenzulegen. Zum anderen geht es aktuellen feministischen Analysen auch um die Weiterentwicklung der Kapitalismus-, Gesellschafts- und Herrschaftskritik von Marx. Der Sammelband zeigt die Aktualität feministisch-marxistischen Denkens auf, eröffnet postkoloniale Lesarten und problematisiert Verkürzungen in der gegenwärtigen Marx-Rezeption.
